Hi everyone.
This is my first post in the Android Development forum.
I am looking at designing an app which will function as follows: Say there are 4 sub units, each accessible through the hamburger side menu.
Each page should have a list of dates, basically events. The user should get notifications based on their preferences which will be either one day before, on the day, 1 week before, etc.
These event dates will be updated once a year by way of a play store update.
I have no java experience whatsoever, but I want to learn. I need the community's assistance in finding the correct place to start. I have tried winging it in the past and just ended up with a lot of app crashes. Would also like to make it as material design as possible.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

The forum in question is Honda-tech.com. A honda enthusiast forum (the largest of its kind). Lots and lots of users on there who would love to access the site through an app and benefit from not having to go through their mobile browsers. A large diversity of iOS and Android users as well.
The topic of an app has been discussed on the forum plenty of times but no one has taken the initiative to actually look into getting one made. I though I would post on the dev site(s) to see if anyone would like to create an app. I am somewhat adept at the Android OS but not so much as far as app dev goes. I have no clue as to how hard this task would be, however if anyone is interested in creating something like this please let me know and maybe we can get this ball rolling.
Also, tapatalk has been discussed but an app is preferred.
Thanks guys.
problem solved
I'm planning on attempting to make a forum app for bungie.net once done shouldn't be hard to adapt to other forums.
Won't be as fast as tapatalk bc I assume they use a custom spy, y they need form support. Could be wrong. Tapatalk is a nice app.
I made a site a while ago that basically works the same way as tapatalk, but with more functionality so it would function like an app you launched through your browser. You can filter out images, specific people, set the OP to be in a separate column, and more. Since it was a website it used cURL so the initial load was rather slow but it also caches all of the pages locally and on the server so load times were pretty minimal after the first grab. It doesn't require any modification on the forum's end but it only reads vBulletin as of now (it could probably be adapted though). I haven't checked, but it should work for any mobile device with a decent browser (Android, iOS, Opera Mobile 10+) and it could possibly be made into an app. This was part of a large project I was working on but got burnt out on so I am not sure what all needs to be finished. PM me if that is interesting.
I would love to see an example of this, it doesnt have to be made into an app, if it functions in browser would be good enough. Porting over to an app would require alot of work, tho the logic would be helpful.
+1 for honda tech app...
Make one for socalcivic.com also..
Ep3
Would love to see a forum app for http://ubuntuforums.org/ also, so would a lot of other people:

I am a recent Graduate of computer science. I have basic knowledge of Java. I have to quickly make my hands dirty developing android apps. There is very limited time for the deadline.
Can any body suggest the quickest and fastest way to learn Android and start developing apps.
Install sdk set up everything then jump into the samples until you understand then lol.

Thanks...for the reply
I have done all sdk and Eclipse installations.....Any sources where I can plunge over samples and all quick techy tutorials....
The samples I was referring to are in the sdk itself. If you have any specific question google should be suffice.

Click to collapse
That kind of depends what sort of app you want to make. I've found that live wallpapers are an easy way to start. There is a good example of a spinning cube live wallpaper that you can modify to get started.
http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/CubeLiveWallpaper/index.html
Someone has even published the cube tutorial almost unchanged to try and make money from it
Making a more complex app with multiple screens and a database etc will take a lot more effort and you'll probably need to read some textbooks.
Thanks for replying jug6ernaut and jgittins
Let me tell you.......My app contains some around 4 screens which contain around 4 forms which should store persistent data of the end user.....As you said using multiple screens and database takes some time......Is there any other way I can store the persistent data....Moreover I am familiar with database concepts...
Any suggestions...
Please suggest me some books also which I can refer quickly.....
Thanks once again
I haven't read any and dev books so I can't recommend any lol.
As for saving info...depends on how much. If its not huge amounts shared preferences or regular file io. If not sql would probably be your best bet.

Hello there,
i'm the owner of a small board with just onenor two thousand active users and they always try to force me to "invent" an application for their mobile phones to access my forum. Since i have an Android phone, most of my users have Android and Android is easier to publish and create, i decided to look for an App for my forum for Android devices!
I don't know much about programming and coding, so i googled for some kind of a building tool, but didn't find anything. I want to make my forum accessable from Android devices! The tool, if something like that exists, should not end up in a final 100% perfect version of my board.
I'm happy about every single answer you guys are able to give!
Best regards
Poly
Research tapatalk.
Already heard about tapatalk, but doesn't the user download the tapatalk app to access my forum? I would appreciate an app which shows my board icon and name...
What about Google Appinventor? Is it easy to work myself into?
Btw i don't want to pay for this project, since my members also won't pay for the app!
Tapatalk can be a dedicated single forum app. For example look at the XDA forum app. That's based on the tapatalk framework. Its definitely the way to go.

I know, but on the Tapatalk Website a single app for my forum costs for a lot of money for android as well as for iOS.
Hi guys,
I am starting to develop an app to be used to search for a product on an online store. An similar style/type of app to the eBay apps etc where products can be found under categories and using search filters.
The website for this store already works in this way and has a basic mobile site with all of these features, the latter of which is not aesthetically pleasing in any way, which is my motivation for creating this app.
Just to clear things up - although i am relatively new to app development, this is not my first app, and I am in no way new to android. I am not asking for someone to 'ned hlp pls c0de ths i noob' so i can call it my own without giving credit. I purely want your opinion on the best way to go about this and any other advice you may give.
I want the app to have the same search features as the mobile site, and to parse the results into a much nicer looking interface, including the images and specifications of the product. This is the first time i have needed features like this in an app and am not sure how to go about it, any help would be greatly appreciated.
What do you guys think? Have any of you developed a similar app?
Hi everyone,
I am part of a small tech start up from Manchester, UK and we have recently created an app using Phonegap. Don't know if many of you have used Phonegap before but it has many limitations. However we are using it as a first try whilst we learn how to make a native app.
I wanted to ask for some feedback about the Android app (we've made an iOS app also but Android is something we want to work on more) as I've received mixed reviews about it's appearance etc.
The app is to help users discover emerging music videos. If anyone could take a look and give any feedback/advice I would really appreciate it and take it all on board. Similarly if anyone else needs any feedback or constructive criticism I would be happy to look at other people's apps.
This is the first time I have posted on here but I wanted some developer advice and I hope I haven't broken any rules/guidelines.
The app is called Rormix - just search the Google Play Store
Thanks, Emma.
Hi,
Your app looks good. My first advice would be to follow the Android Design Guidelines. For example on the the action bar. Those three dots on the left are confusing. Maybe these links can help you
developer.android.com/design/patterns/actionbar.html
developer.android.com/design/patterns/navigation-drawer.html
