Samsung note 4 receiving blurry text photos - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, I have developed a text message problem. My phone is a verizon galaxy note 4, on modestrom 11, and I use textra for messaging. Sometime over the past year (especially the past 4 months) I have noticed I am not receiving all texts. Occasionally i will restart the phone, and will get a dozen or so messages that people had sent up to a week or so before. That problem has pretty much stopped, but I have gotten a new problem in its place. My received text message pictures are blurry. I can send pictures perfectly clear, but ones I receive through textra are blurry, and small in size. Usually they are around 30kb in size. However, when I set the stock messaging app as default, pictures come through perfectly clear. I really like textra as my wife and I send each other moving gif images, but the stock app wont let them move. I have tried setting the max size on messages received or sent to unlimited, this has not helped. I have gone into twrp and cleared cache multiple times, it also has not helped. I can't seem to track this down. I realize this may be a textra problem, as it seems to happen only using the app, but thought I would ask here for help. The textra app is the newest and I have had good luck on previous versions not having this problem. I was using version 4 when the problem started, but even after updating to version 4.8, it's still having blurry photos received. I was thinking possibly a sim problem, but ruled that out by trying the default text messaging app and the pics came through clear. Can someone please try to give me some help sorting this out? I would rather not have to factory reset and restore everything if I can avoid it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

might be a weird question, but what phone does you friend have?
me and my friend had the same problem..i wasnt receiving his text, but he was receiving mine.
There are a few bugs in the messaging app. In your case, it sounds like your friend's phone number / name has become associated with a different phone number (within the messaging cache). So, even though your display will show your friend's name, that's not where the messages will be sent.
Try to delete all of your threads and then reboot the phone. If that doesn't work, try clearing the data for the messaging app and then reboot your phone. That should do it. If that doesn't work, you can take the most drastic step, which is to do a factory reset, but then you'll need to do a restore of your apps and other data that would get wiped out.
Secondarily, there's a slightly different bug that could be happening (one that is much more rare than the first) - which is that your friend's phone number is the same, except for the area code, as someone else in your contact list. The messaging app only looks at the last 7 digits to determine a match for the phone number, so 415-123-1234 will match 310-123-1234. This one is much more rare, but that's another possibility.
BTW, these problems are internal to a specific Android class, so it doesn't matter whether you use Handcent or the stock messaging app.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Text messaging unacceptably slow?

I just got a myTouch 4g, and I've had issues with the speed of accessing text messages. It takes a good 5+ seconds to access a thread to read or respond to texts.
I should probably note that I switched from a Vibrant and backed up my texts with SMS Backup & Restore App, I have about 9k texts with threads of 400+ messages.
Compared to a BB Bold, the time it takes to access messages for me is a deal breaker. I'm hoping that there is something wrong with my phone as I love everything else about it, but I'm strongly considering switching to a Bold within my 2 week return period...
Has anyone else had issues with the text messaging speed??
Never had any issue like that. But I also don't have that many texts. Back up your texts again and clear the phone and try to see how responsive it is when you don't have any saved on the phone.
Also try something other than the stock app to see if that helps
Failing all of that, go to a t-mobile store and try out another mt4g and see if the problem exists.
Hope any of those helps. Sorry to hear about the troubles.

You're using the stock messaging app correct? If you are, use Handcent. Handcent archives them better, so each thread loads faster. I too have 8,000+ texts.
Deleting them helped somewhat but once a thread has a few hundred messages it starts to slow down.
I'm using the stock app, so I'll give Handcent a try to see if that works. I hope so as I'm starting to like everything else about the device more and more.
Any time I bust more than 500 ish in a thread, or about 2k total it becomes sluggish... I just delete them... its whatever, you can save the important SMS somewhere else. Like gmail

I think you just have waay too many text.
Handcent helped sooo much, the native app is like molasses compared to it.
It still struggles with a large amount of texts but not as much. To solve that I found the "delete old messages" app, which that clears your texts but keeps the last X weeks.
Thanks for all the help! I'm sticking with android now, as the texting is fast enough.
Stock sms app has auto delete old built in as well

texting problems, droid x, gb

I got my Droid X at the end of last summer. Not long after I started using Handcent for texting because it had a lot more options. Afterwards (still several months ago) I noticed that the default texting program no longer worked and when I would try to use it Handcent would stop working until I did a battery pull.
Then a few months ago Handcent started causing problems as it would mess up and force close most times that I would receive a picture message. It would require exactly 2 battery pulls, every time no more or less, in order for me to be able to text again. I shrugged it off and dealt with it until now.
Last night I downloaded the gb update and now I essentially cannot text at all. Everything on the phone works fine, until I try texting. I can send one but as soon as I receive one back, it causes Handcent to freeze up and the whole phone freezes until I pull the battery. I have pulled the battery more than 15 times hoping the problem would stop but no luck so far. I also noticed my AOL and school email now pop up error messages and will not sync.
Sorry for the long explanation but I thought explaining the details may be helpful to all of you who are smarter than me at this haha. Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated as I have no idea what to do and I would prefer to avoid doing a factory reset or deleting Handcent if possible since it has a lot of important messages in it to me.
Thank you thank you thank you!
Handcent doesn't store any of your messages. Unistall and try Gosms instead. It has more features and works better
Messages in Handcent stay there until you delete them, I have several thousand and they can be searched through with the features it has. I could pay to have them backed up I believe but its not worth that. I'm pretty sure I tried Go Sms for one day and thought it was terrible. (Message times would be wrong even after I tried to fix the options for it. Issues with pictures and other stuff) I might install again just to see if it will work at all but I'm having my doubts
No actually Handcent does NOT STORE YOUR MESSAGES. All of your message are stored in the data folder and will not go away unless you manually delete them. Unistalling the application will have absolutely no effect on your messages

[Q] DX unable to send multimedia messages

I've searched for quite a while and was unable to find this particular issue mentioned anywhere else.
When my wife tries to send an MMS from her DX it gives her the error message "Can't send message right now. Too many unsent multimedia messages." She has googled the issue and tried the couple fixes that she was able to find, but to no avail. Deleting the threads, deleting the contact and re-entering, etc. Still gets the same message, regardless of who she is trying to send to.
She is unrooted, using GoSMS for messaging.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice!
This is obvious, but just to make sure... Does she have data on?
GoSMS WILL NOT send mms over wifi, so make sure she is on mobile data.
I would go through her convo's and see if there are any mms that she doesnt care about and delete them. Also try sending an mms with the native sms app to see if that will work to see if its a system or gosms problem.
Thanks for the responses!
Mobile data is on.
She doesn't get the message popping up when using the stock messaging, but the message still doesn't send.
I'll go through and delete any MMS I can find and see if that changes anything.
Not sure if this is related, but just over the past few days she's noticed that a few pictures have appeared to become corrupted. The thumbnails appear fine, but when she views the pictures they show a small bar of the image at the top and the rest is a scramble of red/gray. When viewing with the phone plugged into a computer it is just gray with the bar of image at the top.
Still trying to figure that one out, too.
Kind of wondering if rooting her phone and flashing a ROM might help things... I know my DInc runs much smoother for it.
Thanks again!
If your not rooted I would sbf and that should fix your issue.

I think sbfing at this point would be like trying to kill a fly with a bazooka. There are other thing we can try before deleting everything and starting from scratch.
It sounds to me like there is a corruption somewhere in the folder where these pictures are stored, which could be causing both problems.
Try moving a picture into another folder on the sd then send the picture and see if you get different results. You can also try inserting another sd card and try to send a picture from there.
I hope this helps!
Try Handcent, the stock messaging app sucks. I switched because of the same problems your wife is having.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
The reason Handcent will "solve" the problem is the program creates its own folders to stores files and pictures in. The problem will still exist if you use the stock messenger app.
Thanks for all the replies!
I wanted to get back sooner, just been busy.
Here is where I am so far:
My wife said she had gone through and deleted any unsent MMS in all threads, but that the problem persisted. This was a few weeks ago. A couple days ago I personally went through and did the same, and then I also deleted an MMS from one thread that had been successfully sent, just to see if it would do anything.
I then tried sending an MMS and it worked. And she's been successfully sending MMS over the past couple days. I'm not sure if it was necessary to delete a successfully sent message, though. My wife might have missed an unsent one somewhere, but she's generally pretty savvy when it comes to things like that, so who really knows?
In any case, the not being able to send messages problem is solved. Thanks for all the help!
However, I am still trying to figure out what happened to the few photos that became corrupted. She has over 700 photos in total on her SD card (from several years) and she only noticed the corruption problem about a week ago or so. As far as she can tell (hasn't looked at every single photo yet) it is only three photos. The thumbnails are fine and when you initially click to view them they appear fine for a split second before distorting. I'm stumped. Any ideas on this one?
And once again, all of your help/advice is greatly appreciated!
Take the photos that are corrupted and put them on a computer to see if the files are actually corrupted or if the phone is reading them weirdly.
If the comp reads the pictures ok, just try renaming or moving the pictures. Sometimes a re-save of the file will fix an issue like that. If the comp doesn't read the files, they are def corrupted.
I tried viewing the pics after moving them to my comp, but still corrupted. Thankfully it was only three pics and no further ones appear to have become corrupted.
On the plus side the messaging problem appears to be completely solved.
Thanks to everyone for the help/advice!

3rd Party Messaging Apps will not receive text

Hello All!
I've been having this problem for a few weeks now and im all out of ideas of what to do.
Carrier: T-Mobile
Wearable: S3 Rugged
Extra Service: DIGITS
Coming From: LGV20 which never had these issues with the same plans and accesories
So to start, when i got the phone inittially during setup of the google accounts i noticed that my OTP SMS Pushes were not being received, or auto filling the information. I skipped past all of that and noticed that anywhere that OTP text were suppose to autofill in different applications, it would not even when i received the text and got a notification.
So after a while of using TEXTRA which was working fine, one day i stopped receiving ALL text not just mms. I was able to send but never was I able to get anything from anyone. I ditched TEXTRA and went back to the stock Samsung app and noticed that all text were there, even though it was not default. After using the Samsung messages app i decided to go back to textra, heres whats funny. After Textra did it's initial setup, it only showed half of the recieved text from up to that day. Messages were incomplete, some just had one reply from a user and nothing else. So I also tried this with Android Messages and it had the EXACT same message log as textra. Both were not receiving the full logs from the server. Today Android Messaging was working for a good part of the day, then it just stopped all of sudden again.
Can someone help me with this, I've wiped the cache and factory reset the phone. Ive added and removed the multi-line settings in the samsung settings. I've tried the legacy settings on textra. I've called the DIGIT's customer service to see if they could fix it but they made and interesting point that it couldnt be digit because it wouldnt interfere with 3rd part messaging apps. When i switch apps i always make them default, i wipe the app cache etc.
I have a gut feeling this has something to do with something with the default Samsung Messages app and it somehow restricting use outside of it.
I just wanted to reply and say that I've been experiencing the exact same issue and haven't had any luck Google engineering my way around it. For me, I'm seeing the issue with Signal, so I don't believe it's the 3rd party app's problem. I can send messages (SMS/MMS), but the Samsung Messages app is the only one that "receives" them. A strange workaround I found was to download Android Messenger, set that as the default messaging app, then set Signal as the default messaging app again. This worked for a while, but I think the Samsung Messages app recently updated, and it broke this again until I repeated the above workaround.
It's annoying enough that, without a fix, I'll definitely be flashing a completely stripped ROM on this phone once we have the ability to do so to get away from all of the Samsung apps that I can't disable. And don't even get me started on Bixby...

I haven't had any issues with my At&t model...Been using Yaata since day one (about 2 months).
Also, there are some "package disabling" apps in the play store that will allow you to disable any app you want, you don't even need to be rooted. It cost me $1.99 (or around there), but was well worth it! You can even completely disable Bixby, so the button is even non-responsive.
Having the same issue and I may have fixed it. I logged completely out of Digits on the phone (settings/cloud accounts/multi line/hit the ... menu and choose log out.
I have this same issue. No matter which 3rd party SMS app I use I have missing text messages on the T-Mobile S8. Has anyone fixed this? It is driving me crazy. T-Mobile replaced my S8 and the new one does it (not as bad but it does it more than I'd like). How can I resolve this? My friend haf the same issue, he has an unlocked T-Mobile working on AT&T.
I don't use Digits or anything like that... any ideas?
hi guys
all you need to do
go to setings
device maintence
battery
scrool all the way down to unmonitored apps and add your 3rd party sms app
youre welcome
This still didn't work for me and I am having the same exact issues. I have tried installing 2 different 3rd party messaging (Textra and Mood) and both were not working properly. I can send messages out just fine but when I receive them they are delayed (like 5 minutes or longer). Sometimes, I don't get the messages at all. Of course, the Samsung Messaging app (which I hate) works just fine. I have even "Force Stopped" it! What to do?
go into the stock messaging app, and turn off advanced messaging
Has anyone found a solution? I've been using textra for years & suddenly in March I started having this problem but with sent messages. All incoming texts are displayed but my sent texts aren't. I did try the 2 suggestions above. On a note 8, Android 8.0.0,Samsung experience 9.0.
SOLVED. I had the same issues and found the solution. Before you install your 3rd party sms/MMS you need to disable the default messenger. I uninstalled signal, disabled the built-in messenger, reinstalled signal. Now I can receive texts. Also my phone is not a Samsung.
