Kindle Fire HD 8 (8th Gen) Screen Replacement? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been all over the usual places I've ordered new screens for tablets and phones and can't find a single source for the 8th gen model of the HD 8.. Screen is cracked due to a drop, and I'm not sure if the LCD was damaged or not, but, where can I even find any replacements for 8th Gen?

You can find the LCD model and search from Google or eBay

I know this is a old thread but I had the same problem and turns out the 7th gen screen are fully compatible with 8th gen.

What production run is your tablet from? (Look at SSN) Is it defective?

On the box, there is an "SSN" number. Supposedly, if you have an SSN that starts with C70k (or better yet, C80k), it will not be defective. However, all of the tablets I've had (4) have started with C60k, which is the very first production run. They were all defective .
So if you have a nexus 7 tablet, and kept the box, please check it out so we can try to find which production run has perfect Nexus 7's!
I'm not sure if posting your entire SSN is a security issue, so I would advise you to just post the first 4 letters and numbers.
I have a C70K but it hasn't been opened yet. The one that has is a C60K I bought two weeks prior to receiving the C70K. My C60K has very slight screen lift on the middle left-side, but is good otherwise. Just waiting for my plastic case opener to come in so I can fix the screen lift.
There are perfect C60's (like mine), and defective C80's. This has been discussed ad nauseum.

C60K and I only have a very very little of screen lift on the top left...its almost unnoticeable.

Mine is a C60K. Only issue is minor screen lift on the left side, not enough to be a issue for me.

1st on was a C60K, it had very apparent screen lift and a squishiness on the left side. New one is a C70k, so far so good...
I have a C60 and it is perfect. No screen lift, perfect display... it's perfect.

All of mine have been from Gamestop:
1st C6 - would turn off at 20% "show low low battery logo" even after calibrating bad battery? Perfect screen, exchanged
2nd C7 - bad left side screen separation/lift, exchanged
3rd C7 - dust under the screen, 2 spots , exchanged
4th C7 - minor left side screen seperation/lift, just started doing the death at 20% exactly like the first C6 I had for no reason today, exchanged
5th C8 - minor left side screen seperation/lift , missing two screws under battery cover (left side of screen) , returned for gift card
C60K has minor screen lift and faulty speakers, but otherwise good.
C70K has uneven white pixels. Left side of display is clearly brighter than the grey/orangish right side. Seems perfect otherwise.
Both are getting returned.

I have no idea where you're getting that. There's absolutely no evidence to support the notion that any serial number prefix is more or less problematic than any other. Also, I'm not aware of anyone actually receiving a C80 unit yet.
As a refresher, ASUS uses a certain code to date their products. C = 2012, 7 = July, so a C70 prefix merely means a unit was built in July. A C80 prefix means it was built in August. That's it. Even the assumption that devices that are made later will be better built is suspect, because that presumes that fixes have actually been implement in manufacturing.
However, before a fix can be implemented in manufacturing, it has to be designed, then tested, and then new parts produced, and then test manufacturing runs performed, and changes made to the manufacturing process. I'm probably missing some steps as well.
Once the new build is approved, it could go into production at any time, including during the month. So, a C80, or C90, or whatever, that's produced before the new build goes into production, will be the same as C60, or C70, or whatever units. C80, or C90, or whatever units that are produced AFTER the new build goes into production won't have the problem.
This whole "if you have a CX0 unit you won't have problems" meme needs to just die already.
First was a C60K. It was "perfect", but I returned it because I thought the washed out colors and video playback issues were defects.
Second was a C60K. It had raised glass on the left side (couldn't push it down, something forced it up). I returned it.
Third is a C70K (and what I'm still using). It has lifted glass on the left side. I was able to push it down, clamped it over night and it stayed down a week. Now it's lifting again. I may return it eventually, but waiting a bit longer to make sure the manufacturing issues are mostly resolved.
Fourth Nexus 7 was a C60K I picked up from Staples. It was "perfect", I was thinking about getting a refund on my third Nexus 7 16GB and switching to this 8GB model. But ended up changing my mind, so returned it.

That sounds like you are talking about a hardware revision. The hardware for the most part seems okay. The problem is the the manufacturing process seems to not be perfect and quite a few defects are slipping through. The hardware doesn't need to be redesigned, their process needs to be fine tuned.
And to me it's reasonable to believe that the manufacturing process could have gone through some refinements between the C60K batch and the C70K batch and more in the C80K batch. A perfect C80K is no better than a perfect C60K, but hopefully the chances of getting a defect are going down as they fix whatever was going on in the process that caused these defects.
Have a C70k unit, everything was perfect (I think) but recently noticed that my speakers have blown (very distorted sound). Waiting for my replacemrntunit before I send this back.

c70k 16 Gb reporting in as perfect!
Waiting for C90K production runs hopefully with the newer Hydis color corrected 1280x800 IPS Displays or SHARP 1280x800 IPS Displays. Really cant get past the Pastel greens, and slightly purple blue colors. And thats on a good display some people are living with Yellow tint screens or blue tints. Its the one main thing of a tablet, GET THE DISPLAY RIGHT.

My C60 is perfect. No screen lift, no dead pixels, good sound, etc. etc. etc.
All we have us anecdotes...nothing to base anything on. This board is not a good sample.
c60 so far so good
C60K here. The Nexus7 that I have is perfect. No problems or defects at all.

So what's with all the reports about broken charging ports?

All over Amazon.com's forums, I've been reading about how the Kindle Fire HD somehow has a "loose" charging port and won't hold a charge. I know Amazon uses micro-USB like every other manufacturer, but what makes the Kindle's so prone to defects?
It's making me really reconsider buying a Kindle device. I thought Amazon had better quality control.

tendoboy1984,
Many of the devices use a Mini USB socket that will fail under strenuous conditions, probably the worst is the Nexus 10. The Kindle Fire HD is a solid tablet with a solid future. If you are looking for a Multi-media tablet, look no further - the Kindle Fire HD performs. If you are looking for a development platform lean to the Nexus 7.
If you Google:
amazon kindle fire hd failing charging port
There is not an excessive number of complaints, so I would just say this is a trend - maybe they had a bunch fail, just like every other manufacture defect. If you buy a Nexus 7, at some point there is going to be a higher number of failures due to some mistake in the Manufacturing.
We remember when the Nexus 10 was first released, Samsung made a manufacturing mistake on the rear of the tablet, they forgot to glue the back so when you depressed the back the Tablet would make a nasty pop noise. They have fixed this defect but our point remains, whether you are looking at a $200 Tablet or a $600 tablet, they are all prone to some sort of issues - just our experience.
Finally, if you take care of the Tablet, do not abuse it, you will get a very long life out of the Kindle Fire HD 7". We love the tablet.................

really the kindle is the best cheap tablet ever made! good sound, good screen, 1 g ram, 4400 mah battery a front cam (why a back cam, i m not going to take photos with a tablet xD) so its good, the materials they use are exellent, if your tablet fall it can have some damage, drop a nexus 7 and see the difference

when a custom rom andd kernel are release, i will make my tweaks compatibles and i will add the audio tweaks from acid audio, so we are having one of the best tablets of all
The KFHD in my view has a premium build quality, it feels really solid, it was one of the factors I chose it over the Nexus 7, I use it daily & love it but as with most tech, things do after a while fail sometimes, but many just blow it out of proportion though, I have no issues here.
Sure since it is a small connector & port it feels like it could break but I suspect most tablets/devices that use them are all in the same boat.

Gilly10,
We completely agree with you, the Kindle Fire HD and 2 are all solid tablets top-of-the-class products.
I think part of the issue here is that the charging port is on the bottom in landscape mode. That means if you're trying to charge while using the tablet, the port is going to get banged around more than it should. I really wish they had put the power on one of the short ends.

Geekybiker,
I hear you but we have a Nexus 10 that has the port on the Left Side of the tablet. This is a pain, I have to hold the tablet upside down if the battery is dying, otherwise the cable will not reach the 110v socket if I live it right side up. Now you may say, the tablet flips so what is the big deal? When you use the tablet upside down the Volume controls are reversed - I know, so what? It can be a real pain once you get used to the Kindle bottom port and correct facing volume controls.
After using the Nexus 10 for over 2 months now, our preference is the port at the bottom. Just our 10 cents.

Micro USB port
I repair A LOT of these! The 1st Generation of Kindle Fire (D01400) had a huge problem with the charging port b/c the port was unbalanced on the Main Board and normal usage eventually cause the solder points to break free from the MB. When I repair them I use an epoxy that gets rock hard to lock the port to the board.
The Kindle Fire HD has a much better designed Micro USB port. It is attached with 4 'legs' that go through the board and are then filled with solder as opposed to the 2 'legs' on the 1st gens. If your port is failing on a Fire HD model then its most likely because it has been used too much while it is plugged in and the 'tongue' inside the port is worn down or damaged.
Replacing the ports is one of the more difficult circuit board solder repairs b/c there are five tiny leads in a tight spot that need a steady experienced hand to get the solder on correctly.
So yes the first generations were faulty but the HD models are all good as long as you use them correctly. I strongly recommend not using any Micro USB device while its plugged in b/c that is where most of the damage comes from.

Good read. You may request to have this move to the Kindle Fire area as this is the KFHD area. I would but I'm on a tablet.

How hard is it to actually get to the loose usb charging port?
I have a 1st gen and its loose - have to play around and rig cords to be in odd positions to hold a charge. I have some circuit repair skill, but havent seen much in the way of how to crack these open or what has to be removed to access enough area to solder.

Proud New Owner (Shield Tablet from Nexus 7 2013))

I got mine Shield Tablet on Saturday, at the Gamestop in PalmBay, FL (Closest Place that had them in stock). They had 2 remaining in stock after I got mine. They did not have the cover or controller.
Mine is replacing a Nexus 7 (2013). The lack of an SD Card slot in the Nexus was really bugging me.
The Shield tablet's front-facing ported speakers are also very noticeably better.
I also find it amazing how much easier it is to see the screen (I wear reading glasses), despite the fact that there is not that much difference in size. I need to see if the DPI set lower in build.prop.
The only thing I miss is Near-Field, and that is more appropriate to have on a phone, so it is no big omission, but I guess it means no more tap-to-pay for me until I get a new phone.
The Nexus 7 was definitely a "Settle-for" when I bought it, because I could not find anything that met my requirements, but the Shield does meet all of them:
-- Standard USB charging
-- 8 inch tablet with a worthy resolution
-- Front facing stereo speakers
-- Standard ports and slots
(There was a Chinese Tablet that met the specs: The FNF iFive X2, it was also cheaper, but I was a little worried about the firmware, and firmware updates on a tablet like that.)
I also got 20% off on the Nexus 7, so I went for it at the time.
To be clear, IMHO, the Shield Tablet would not be worth $115 more than the Nexus 7 ($229 - 20% = $185 vs $299) (if you can get one at that price), but at the same time, I think it is worth $70 more --- It's that close.
Ironically, the Nexus 7 will now be used for Gaming, and the Shield is my "Work Tablet".
More details comparing the 2 if anyone is interested.
Small world. I bought mine at the same place on Saturday also. I went in Friday night and they had 3. I wanted to see it in person but they didn't have a display up. I decided to sleep on it as I'm replacing my aging Nexus 10 and was concerned about the size. Saturday I decided to go for it so I actually called GS to hold one for me. By the time I got there, the other two were gone and I got the last one. So far I'm very pleased with it. Just waiting on a controller to round out. Performance of this thing is unbelievable! Getting used to its size and almost makes my N10 feel bulky in comparison. Good purchase!
Wow! Yeah, it is a small planet.
I was in Best Buy on Friday night, and the salesman said that they were not going to get them until October. He said that 8 people a day were asking for them.
That's when I called GS, and... we both know the story. If one was on hold for you, and another must have sold shortly after I got mine, I guess it was lucky that I got there fairly early.
Picked mine up at the microcenter in minneapolis while on vacation. LOVE that tablet. Only gripe is that x-com doesn't work on it. Crashes as soon as you try to start a game.

New Onn Surf 8 and 10 inch tablets, new hardware or just a box change?

I noticed in Walmart today that the 8 and 10 inch tablets (at least the 10 inch one with the keyboard) now comes in a yellow box and has "surf" on the top of the box just like the 7 inch one does. Does anyone know if this is a new hardware revision or if they merely changed the box but kept the same chipset and other hardware/firmware the same?
No hardware revisions. The model numbers have changed but I believe that is do to the SURF rebranding on the devices. I bought a second x007 on black friday. when I took the back off to examine the hardware I noticed it was the same part numbers on my older non-surf model.

Broken HD 8 screen

I accidentally stepped on my Fire HD 8 and broke the screen. All I can see now is just random color lights and cracks. I bought it two years ago. It is very likely HD 8 2020 (10th generation). I think the only thing I can do is replace the LCD screen. But I need to go to the setting to confirm what generation it is in order to buy the LCD replacement. Of course, I can send it to a professional repair shop. But that will probably cost me the price of a used HD 8 (or perhaps a new HD 8). Just wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions for me.
