Been reading the s10 forum on here and realized this forum existed. From the s10 forums it seems as there has been two updates for the phone. One being the system update (adding Bixby button customization, and security patch.. etc) the other update being one for biometrics.. is this the case for the s10 plus?
got the 2 updates on S10+ exynos Germany
but the fingerprint scanner still is a mess .... my oppinion
How did the second update happen?

I'm about to purchase a S7 Edge so I've been poking around these forums trying to figure if I should/if I can modify it once I get it. I'm no stranger to rooting, unlocking, and installing custom ROMs on my previous phones but I'm trying to keep things relatively stock this time around. However, I will definitely want to root and potentially unlock the bootloader. After poking around here I have some questions:
1. I'm seeing different firmwares being talked about all over the place. What exactly are these firmwares? Are they OTA updates from Verizon? These aren't full ROMs or software updates, right?
2. I know Samsung has said that M is coming for the S7, but I also know that it's probably going to take forever for Samsung to get it out, and then it's going to take forever and a day for Verizon to approve/mangle it how they see fit. So I'm wondering if you guys think there will be a quicker upgrade path to N for those of us who are able to tinker with out phones like this. I'm talking Samsung N, not something like CM14. Though I'm not entirely opposed to a stock-based firmware, we'll see how much TouchWiz wares on me.

1. There are only two types, the Verizon firmware and the U (for Unlocked) firmware. You should know what Verizon's always have in their software, but the Unlocked is the international variant that's much cleaner but also lacks features like Wi-Fi calling and visual voicemail.
2. The S7 and S7 Edge already comes with Marshmallow out of the box, if that's what you're asking? And TouchWiz isn't that bad especially how much they've cleaned it up for this year.

Ok, thanks. And I actually meant Nougat, not Marshmallow.
Is the latest software still rootable?
Hi brand new to S7 edge (SM-G935T). Love this phone so far but would like to update to nougat and security patches ASAP as i had my last phone hacked and want to minimize that chance.
I have rooted/s-off/etc and played with custom ROMs, boot screens and animations, etc for MyTouch 4G Slide years ago.
After that i had some limitations modding a Galaxy S4.
I know sometimes system updates would lock you out of some levels of customization of the system.
So i'm wondering: will any of the OTA updates will lose me something i can't get back?

So if you bought any of the US carrier models with the snapdragon chip you probably might as well take the OTAs to the last security update (Here is t-mobile's list of releases) for updates and security purposes, and then play with that release and decide if you would prefer to flash to the brandless ROM "G935u" instead of "G935t", which won't come with the carrier's cruft. To specifically answer my OP question, it's still possible to root the latest version of them, for what it's worth, although not GOOD methods.
Sad face. I was beguiled by the xda-developers Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge page into buying the S7 Edge without realizing a lot (all?) of the cool stuff was for the exynos variant.
With the way things are now in the mobile world one should not put his faith in any one website. Most snap dragon chips come locked tight this day in age. My self included should have done much more research in before buying.... I'm am at least thankful for root.
Dear all, Our beloved S7 Edge has already received two major updates and Oreo is likely the last OS update our device might receive.
However, a recent GFXBench result shows Galaxy S7 with Android Oreo 8.1.0 and our S7 Edge might also get the same treatment.

Then this must be the Galaxy S phone with the longest ever updates , I think Samsung is aware about the fact that the S7 and the S7 edge still sells better, and is way better then other A5,A6,A8 phones that have similar price.

Let's be honest here, Oreo 8.0 update for S7 Edge was not very convincing as the battery life is less than stellar. Oreo 8.1 update might fix this issue.

Basically a repost of my answer, but the Oreo 8.1 on GFX doesn't seem to be like 8. It's missing heartrate sensor and a Samsung Android version. Sounds like GFX mistook a AOSP signed build running on the S7 for a legitimate Samsung one. It should have 9.5 and heartrate checked (probably related to S Health), AOSP can't run heartrate or store a Samsung Android value because it isn't TW. I might be wrong and 8.1.0 is coming, but for now that's what it seems like.

Hi. I have an S8 Active and am hoping that XDA can make a seperate the S8 from the S8 Active because some ROMS can be mixed and I dont know if S8 ROMS can be used to the S8 Active.
As of right now and future to come. The s8 U and W series and active are dead in the water samsung has patched the only root method we had on bit 2. Many tests have been run by myself and several others all in failure. Unless a new exploit comes along do your research before purchasing a device on hopes of root let alone roms
I have the AT&T branded version of the S10+ , meaning I bought it from AT&T. So if you are on another carrier or have the unlocked version, this post might be of no use to you!
I have had the phone a little over a month. Since I have had it, it has gone thru several firmware updates that are confusing the hell out of me. Here's my trek log:
Phone came with firmware SD3.
About a week later it updated itself to SD7.
Some weeks later SD9 came around (I think).
I noticed the security level patch was being updated to a semi current month and that is it aside somewhere I read something about night mode on the camera (which I have) and also found a new QR scanner icon.
After that, it updates to firmware SR7 or S something 7 (I forgot the middle letter).
I was on this firmware until yesterday when it updated to SG8. I was on SG8 about 5 minutes before it said another update was available. What gives!?!? So many updates! AHHHHHH!
I read that the Sxx update (I forgot the middle letter and end number this time) just fixes some bug about the lock screen. I wasn't even experiencing said bug! Why do I need the update!?!?
So this morning after connecting to my wifi last night my phone yet again updated itself, (even though I kept telling it to remind me later) this time to SGB.
I am freaking confused Mr. Bigglesworth!
Can someone help and enlighten me here? I come from the S3 and S4 days of the galaxy line, back then only serious updates (like the patch for stage fright) and OS updates rolled out. These new seemingly random and nonessential updates are very new to me.
I'm not on AT&T and people with Samsung phones almost invariably complain about not receiving updates so your complaint is novel.
SGB is the latest Samsung build--unlocked S10+ phones got it this week (after several months with no updates) and Verizon got that update last week.
Your many intermediate updates might be coming from AT&T and be updating or fixing the carrier specific stuff they added to your phone.

so the interesting part of the firmware's are the last 6 letters on my phone those are U3ASG8.
the u3a part is the version of the bootloader you are on (this is not downgradable), so I am on the 3rd version of the bootloader.
the last 6 letters in my case SG8
-S is for the year, so in 2020 it will become T
-G is for the month (A for January, B for February and so on)
-8is the build number (they test internally find any problems then increase the version...)
if you want to find what the updates improved check

You know I did read somewhere that the firmware letters and numbers meant the bootloader, month, year, and build number. I didn't know I could check a site to see what the updates did/do, thanks for the post but I tried changing the lux to US and 975F to 975U but it came back with a 404 error.
