Tech radar says outdoor brightness is poor
When we took the phone out and about in the sun to take pictures, we could barely see the screen, which wasn’t what we’d expect from a phone that’s supposed to be used for filming in a range of situations

Gonna be honest, I've had this a few days now and it's been fine. Strangely, the one on display at O2 was noticeably crap but the one I'm typing on now is fine.
I was worried before it arrived. I wonder if there are a few faulty panels out there.
This fake, this web is Sony hater.
it does not let me put links or photos but in Youtube they have already left display comparisons

I have had experience using the X1 on a very bright day and the screen is almost unusable outdoors. There may be screen settings that can get around this, but I haven't found them so far.

Sounds like a faulty device. Go for a return and Exchange
Wow! Go to the YouTube app, type "4K HDR" and turn up the resolution. It's so crisp it'll make you cry.
/!\ Do not forget to TURN ON AUTO brightness, since max luminosity in manual is only 391nits! That's not usable outdoor! Maybe here lies the issue with some users. /!\
No issue here for me, the same than my previous Mate 10 pro, if not slightly better.
GSM Arena measured 661nits with a 75% screen target area, while they measured 653 for IPhone XS, and 793 for Galaxy S10+.
Great in direct sunlight, very impressed.

No issues here at all, I don't know who are the people complaining about the brightness of the screen. It's as good as s10+, I live in Miami the sun is always shining bright here. The comments of people about brightness is not legit.
I think the brightness is sufficient, at least for me

in a first review (german) the max brightness seems to be critical outside. (at 2:07)
I must say... it's maybe on video. The pre-production piece I saw has beautiful brightness on sun. But yea, It can be piece by piece. I think oficiall U12+ will be good even in sunny weather. Let's wait!
I think it has same display as the u11+ 6" slcd 6 which is really dim
Hmm, he actually said that i looks pretty much like the U11+ and that it is a little bit to dark. This was also a problem with the HTC 10.
Probably HTC set a max brightness to save battery, i dont know. Could this be the case ?
i hope it has better brightness compared to my previous u11+

No problem here htc10 plus the htc11+ are ok.
Nice display's
Grtz
Anandtech estimated the display to be 600+ nits which is very bright and nothing like the U11+'s dim display.
But maybe they are wrong...
"The display will support HDR10 content on YouTube, and although no number was mentioned, the display is likely to be 600+ nits at full brightness."
Source: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12784/the-new-htc-u12-smartphone-hands-on
"The display's also noticeably brighter than the U11+, which was a pain point for some."

I don't know the U11 but my new U12+ is really great. I was very impressed today morning when I stepped out from home and got direct sunlight on the phone and it was still easy to read.
I wonder WTH that German was talking about... maybe he left on battery savings and didn't notice it? Happened to me the first morning, it greatly reduces maximum brightness.

glad to hear this.
i think that all reviews mention that brightness is higher than u11+, not much, but it is.
In a german review it states that the display has ~ 500-550 cd/m² (for reference, the Galaxy s9 has 740 cd/m², the U11 plus has about 400 cd/m² and the U11 about 530 cd/m²).

If you like the brightness of U11, U12+ is just slightly less bright in my comparison.
On my table side by side, U12+ indeed looks a slight bit dimmer.
On the street/direct sunlight it is doing a great job for my needs.

Tbalden pleaseeee, would you make a fix o port the bright feature from u12+ to u11+, that is the only thing we need to get a perfect phone...if is necesary, i could pay for it !
Hi,
GSMArena repors that max brightness is about 400 nits... which is pretty low. Has anyone here who has the U12+compare to another phone they have outside and give their honest verdict?
Yesterday I can play few min with the U12+ and I will not buy it, even when the price drop under 500€, because the display is useless. I was indoor and it was already dark compare to any phone I know.
I think from 2016 to 2018 the baddest screen has the ZTE Axon 7 but even this was better than the U12+.

It does ok. Not nearly as well as the 5t, has a lot of glare issues so you will naturally be trying to hold it at specific angles. The 5t was more natural and you could just walk and read and natural motion wouldn't reflect as much. I'm trying to get used to it. Screen is massive and I really like the real estate it has.
Mines looks pretty good. If I compare with my favorite (from my prev devs - Samsung note 4) - OP7 pro doing very well on direct sunlight (no concerns at all, pretty much like note)
I frequently use Google maps in full Florida sun with this thing mounted on the handlebars of my motorcycle. Never have trouble seeing it, even with sunglasses on.
Very readable even in direct sun light
Pretty good but a notch below my S8 +.
The best since my s6 edge+ while rooted using high brightness. The high brightness mods makes it the best I've ever used. Just put an iPhone X Max and Xr to shame today.

I use the Renovate Ice magisk mod and it creates a qs tile that you can toggle off and on like the rest of the qs tiles

Works Good
The Device performs very well and is not a problem about outdoor visibility.
I came from an SGS8 so my experience had been really good. Top-notch, really. The 1+7 Pro is worse. It isn't bad though, it's still great. Also, there seems to be an issue with the automatic brightness. Where the S8 would, due to the conventional light sensor, turn the brightness up and down seemingly even before any change happened, the 1+ struggles a bit. It takes time. I've heard people describe how it doesn't work at all and they have to adjust it manually, so far, I only had delay issues.

That's the main downside for these full screen display devices: the ambient light sensor has a cutout under the OLED layer but the screen can interfere with what the sensor sees. I can sometimes be in a dark room and brightness adjusts to the appropriate level but it can read the light being emitted around the cutout as an increase in light and boost the brightness up pretty high.
I find that after some time the autobrightness issues kind of die down, same with the proximity sensor during calls since that too is under the display
At points i couldn't really make out the screen in sunlight with max brightness. Might be because of the memory film protector on the front. ElementalX kernel is my saviour for the high brightness mode at the moment
Very bright
Very very good and with high brightness mode it's even better. Never seen such a nice display

Yes try outside under natural light.
Most indoor lighting now is PWM. The frequency is high enough that human can see the flicker but the slow motion features certainly do.
It's weird not doing it now but in certain light indoors it flickers bad like said maybe different light conditions making it do it just wanted make sure wasn't my phone or update caused it, [emoji106]

Yes if the light isn't CW (continuous wave) source it will show up. Worst offenders are LEDs powered off 60Hz mains with nothing but a diode in series. (Cheap Christmas lights) Tree will look ON to the eye but fast shutter speeds and capture make it look like a seizure inducing flickering/shimmering mess!
no problem under sunlight but in dark environments the screen is way too dark.. I barely can see what's on the screen.

MIUI is full of AI. I'm taking a guess here, but instead of turning off auto brightness, try adjusting the brightness slider in cases when you find the auto setting uncomfortable and see if it learns your preferences with time. I think I only sometimes turn it up at night when it tries to save battery and go too dark. And sometimes during the day I'll turn it down if I have the notification shade open and it seems to me that the light can be dimmer. I'm pretty satisfied with the auto setting on this phone.
Btw (a new MIUI user here, this has apparently been a MIUI feature for quite a while), have you noticed that in harsh daylight not only will it turn up the brightness to max, but it will also bump up the shadows, saturation, all kinds of crazy stuff, like a "vivid" mode on TVs? See what I mean here.
yes it does pump up the contrast for better visibility

Yes, i am facing same issue it dims the brightness too low in dark, i have to manually increase the brightness. Really disappointed by xiaomi this time.
Flashing the Evira2.3b kernel fixes this issue.

What a simple solution, lol, already tested, I´m good to go!
So that's the setting that controls this thing? Great!
I thought that was impossible to disable. But I actually find it quite useful. I only wanted to turn it off once. I was watching something in transit and my screen would sporadically go from "vivid to normal", depending on where the sun would hit the screen/sensor.

I have the same problem ;<(
Hi everyone, I have a problem and I would like to share it with you because I think it is a very serious software or design flaw and it may be that this could happen to some of you.
This is the second device with the problem, I returned the first one to Amazon and I have unsealed this right now
I have realized that recording video at any resolution, when I zoom at maximum, I focus on an object and when I view the video the object is displaced, I don't know if you understand me.
It is as if the camera that shows me the image on the screen is not the same as the one that records the video, it is the displaced objects and I am testing it with the second oneplus that Amazon has sent me and the same thing happens to both, so I think this can happen to more devices
When it is most noticeable is with the maximum zoom but if you look it always happens but obviously it is clearer with zoom
This happens to me in any resolution at 60fps
In this Youtube link I show the problem, the video is in 4k resolution 60fps but it happens in any resolution 60fps
In the video you can see perfectly how the white letters are up during the recording and when I play the video they are seen in the center and that is not normal. The other day I recorded a helicopter flying and when I played the video the helicopter was not seen
The phone is just unsealed and is the second in 1 month and a half.
It is European version
I would really appreciate if anyone can test what I have commented to see if I am not the only one.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my English

When you zoom you're changing lenses. There is a handoff which occurs..leave the camera on one of the stock zoom states there are 3 of them.
They should all work afaik, perhaps not the most zoomed out one, but the other two should be fine..

I personally think that if a device has certain characteristics, they should work correctly, it's like buying a car with 6 gears and only being able to use 5 because the sixth doesn't work well.
I like the device a lot but I can't live having paid more than € 1000 knowing that it has this fault because for me it is a fault
I have tried other devices with 4 cameras and that does not happen to them, I have tried to record a car from 50 meters away with the zoom to maximum and I have not been able, you can see the video in the Youtube link that I have put

I'll take a look pal. Is only compare a OnePlus 8 pro with a OnePlus 8 pro though mate.
Let's see if we can set up a test whereby we can isolate it indeed it is an issue or not.
Has to be specific though and replicatable.

I have already spoken with Amazon and they have told me that they are going to check it because it may be that there is a defective batch. I will inform about how this strange story is developing.
It is really something very strange and doing more tests I have verified that it is not only with the maximum zoom, if I press the button zoom X3 or any zoom level it also happens.
I lean out of my window and record a car at less than 50 meters and while I make the recording I can see it on the screen but when I see the video the car does not appear, it is as if the lens that shows me the image on the screen while I am recording it is not the same lens that records the video.
very strange Thank you for answering

It does not matter if I use HDR or not, I record an object at the top of the screen with the maximum zoom with the object in front of me and when I see the video the object is in the center of the screen and when it is something that is further away and moving is not even seen on the video after recording it

Ah ye that's not right, I think the alignment of the lens, it has to be..
I can confirm I do not have this said issue. Definitely not and Amazon or OnePlus must take responsibility for that, it's a factory defect, perhaps their standard testing process doesn't cover zooming in detail.
So you say that if you capture something onscreen whilst zooming in and is present in the preview, it will not be present in the playback?
If so then I would query the lens, this isn't something a software fix could change. In no way.

Exactly, what appears while you are recording then does not appear in the video. It is very curious and seems to be related to what you have said about the alignment of the lenses.
It is the second oneplus 8 pro that Amazon sends me and in both there is the same problem that is why they have told me that they will notify it in case there is an error in a series of devices
Another curious fact is that with the new Gcam which uses 3 lenses of the oneplus 8 pro this problem does not occur and the truth is that it gives good results

You are right, Gcam has less zoom than the stock camera but as I said before, the problem occurs at any zoom level although it is obviously more visible as the zoom increases.
That is what makes me think that it may be a software problem because I have done a test by putting the Gcam and the stock camera at the same zoom level more or less and with the Gcam I get the image correctly and with the stock the problem occurs
Another thing that makes me think that it is a software problem is that it only occurs in any resolution using 60fps, if I use 30fps it does not happen so it cannot be a design problem or that the lenses are incorrectly positioned

hi, there! new to the forum as i got my op8pro couple of weeks ago. i can confirm the issue, it is strange that only appears at 60fps, and only when zoom is used. in my case at least looks like the video is being cropped...like u said, at rhe time of the recording i can see the "whole picture' on the screen, but then when u play the video it looks to me as it was being cropped from the original video and only showed a portion of the "whole picture". i think it's probably smth to do with how the software is processing the video when zoom is used at 60fps.. don't thing is hardware or has something to do with the positioning of the lenses..
basicly smth like that

Or my god I thought that I was the only one to whom this happens, if you look at YouTube videos you can see perfectly what I am talking about.
Anyway, it happens to me in any resolution at 60fps and using any zoom but obviously it is appreciated more the more zoom I apply. One day I recorded a helicopter with the zoom to the maximum and when I wanted to see the video it did not appear on the screen during the entire recording ,the helicopter was advancing which means that if what I am recording is in motion the problem is accentuated.
And from what I have been able to see this only happens to some devices because with several people with whom I have spoken in different forums they comment that it does not happen to them or at least they say that
