And it seriously overheats when recording 4k video for any reasonable length of time.
The 1080p video is class leading: no quibbles there. It's absolutely the best, most stable 1080p footage you can get, with brilliant immersive sound recording.
The 4k,... notsomuch. The image itself is fine - good colours and great DR for 4K but Sony really need to work on their stabilisation. The most recent update has helped but it still struggles some on the horizontal axis, making it not as stable as competitors. The EIS is not working well with the OIS.
So it's a mixed bag and one that is a software update away from fixing. But if you keep it on 1080p then you're in for a treat.

I've had the June update, yes. Some improvement but it still struggles not to jump on the horizontal axis, which it still does. Fine if you're not walking but really distracting if you are.
There is actually an answer to the problem, I've discovered - so long as you're not wedded to the SteadyCam effect: switch stabilisation off entirely.

The stabilisation toggle seems to apply only to the EIS not the OIS, which is automatic. As it's the EIS not playing well with the OIS that is causing the issue, switching it off actually fixes it.
Your videos no longer "float": it looks like you're walking. But you're walking,... Smoothly.

I believe that OIS is locked in the Cinema Pro app, in that neither EIS or OIS are working. Apparently it's so that you can get better results on a tripod but I do wish they'd add it as an option - not everyone can justify buying a gimbal.

Yes, I used Cinema Pro app for all clips before latest firmware update. Also I used my roommate's Snoppa Atom gimbal, it was struggling a bit to stabilize phone of Sony Xperia1's size. Both previous firmware and gimbal did not help much with stabilization.

I like videos quality; for testing this, I've made a video of a thunderstorm from my balcony during an evening, and i can say that compared to photos, here even in poor conditions of light (sky all black, full of clouds) i can see well every lightning, from its appearance until the disappearance.

At auto mode, some videos are dimmed.
I've been using the Galaxy S8 Plus until I received my solar red U11 yesterday (glad I waited, it's very nice looking). Anyway, I am very impressed with the photo image quality of the phone (it is very comparable to the S8), but I have a few nitpicks about the video recording:
1) No 1080p/60 mode. I really don't understand why it doesn't have a 60fps mode when even phones from 2016 had it? It has 1080p/30 and 1080p/120 (for slow motion), so why no 1080/60? Is it overheating concern?
2) No way to turn of EIS in 1080p video recording mode? While 1080p is very stable due to its combined OIS and EIS, it also crops the view significantly when recording video in this mode (compare it to 4k, which is quite a bit wider but has no EIS). Anyway, the EIS is nice if you want that, but I think there needs to be a toggle or option to turn off EIS and have the wide recording mode in 1080p that is like the 4k mode. As it stands, there does not appear to be a way to change this.
3) 6 minute recording limit in 4k. I guess it's also due to overheating concerns, but why not just make it unlimited and have the phone's temperature monitoring stop recording automatically if it gets to a certain temp? Some people are reporting overheating stoppages even before the 6 minutes, but in cooler environments, we may be able to record indefinitely in 4k.
Things I DO like about the U11's camera though...
1) Photo app and quality are excellent. Nice Pro mode too.
2) Glad I can lock exposure and focus during video recording very easily.
3) Focusing pulling with the touch screen is very nice on the U11 (it doesn't rock back and forth when focusing like many other phone cameras).
4) Audio recording options are very nice (3d audio vs hi-res, and acoustic focus)

Another thing that bothers me (when compared to the S8 or iPhone 7) is that I can't seem to take a photo while recording in 4k. I'm not sure if that's a software or hardware limitation, but I used that all the time on those phones. I really like using the squeeze to open the camera, take a photo, and switch between front and rear cameras though!

Try Open Camera on XDA, it works shooting 1080P without EIS and no time length limitation on 4K.
I've also see the same issue on the HTC 10 in regards to the 4k and taking a photo while recording if you can call it an issue. I suppose no one had complained about it and they left it unchanged

It's a nice camera app, thanks. Tried various settings in the app for video recording. Looks like no matter what framerate you choose, it can't go above 30fps. I thought maybe it would let me shoot 1080p/60, but nope (even when setting it to 60fps, it still records at 30). Also doesn't seem to be a way to take a photo while shooting video in this app? Nice that you can shoot longer than 6 minutes in 4k though (I didn't try it yet, but I assume it works).

I call it an "issue" only because I have come to expect it when shooting video now. In fact, I used it quite frequently on my iPhone and Galaxy S8. Being able to take a photo without interrupting the video recording is a pretty important feature, in my opinion. I suppose one could load up the video in software and capture a frame manually, but it's a feature that other flagships have, so I miss it.

Indeed, my old year 2012 HTC One S supported shooting FHD video and taking a real photo at the same time and I owned a Galaxy S6 support that feature too. However, I think during 4K recording that no phone could take a real photo, all they do is just capture a frame from video clip and pretend that is a photo.

Right, I understand it's not an actual "photo" at the highest resolution, but I would still like the convenience of capturing a frame during 4k video recording like I can on all of the other flagships phones.
Wow I'm glad I found this post, I thought I was going crazy with the issues you mentioned, especially the cropped 1080p video! I hope they can fix that with the 60fps update, because it is really annoying.

1080p60 is being introduced in stock ROMs with versions 1.26 and higher.
Do you know if EIS for 4k video is planned? Thinking about buying the U11 instead of the much too expensive Pixel 2, but the lack of EIS in this case is a bit of a bummer.

1080p 60fps looks really bad, not sure why.
1080p 30fps looks better, but sometimes there is blurriness.
There's focus hunting in 60fps but if you set to AF-S it's ok. Better to use 30fps for extra stabilization though.
Unfortunately video is bad if not awful...
Just my opinion after two weeks of testing it.
It's the first time that i am so disappointed from a flagship.
Just received two days back update for my mate 10. Just by luck I recorded a 1080p 60fps video and I noticed that the clarity of video and sharpness has improved dramatically. You can proof this if you record a similar length video at 30fps. The size of 60fps video is double of that for 30pfs meaning that the frame rate has doubled.
The best video I've ever shot with a phone, including Pixel 2 and Galaxy S8. That is IF you got a tripod, or stable hand, if you don't then it's bad.
The 4K video I shot using my hands was perfect, looked like a DSLR video or some ****, noise was non existent and the processing was amazing for a smartphone. I filmed a ballet performance, with changing stage lights and fast movement, also it was pretty much pitch black in the concert room except the stage which was lit. My friend used his Pixel 2 to shoot 4K at the same time, and his looks like **** compared, too much noise and it just looks bad.. the Pixel 2 video looks like it came from a smartphone straight up, the Mate 10 4K looks like it came from a $700 mirrorless or something.
I have to say again, this was video shot while SITTING at a ballet performance, in this situation where you don't have to walk around, Mate 10 has the best video out of any phone I've seen. If you have to walk and move around a lot, then a very good stabilizer 4K is the best video phone, S9+ or OnePlus 6 come to mind..

What do you think about the video settings for Mate 10 Pro. I have the phone almost a year now but right after I bought it in around few weeks I disabled the video stabilization which is EIS and of course it has OIS built in. I mostly shoot 1080p videos do you think it is a good idea to keep the EIS on as well or just to have it with OIS. What I do not like is the image is somewhat blurred and distorted when panning and when not enough light due to the EIS. But still would like to hear your opinion. Thank you!

What do you mean "since" EMUI 9? The mate 10 shipped with EMUI 8 and has for the most part has not even been upgraded to EMUI 9 except for beta versions. As with any major upgrades there will probably be some bugs with EMUI 9 (and probably with the camera) that hopefully will be fixed before the general release of EMUI 9

If you are not familiar with the upgrade and how to perform it , then you not should type! The official release is already provided and for those who waits for it can upgrade via Firmware Finder as I did fully official build 9.0.0.161
Everything works as before.
720p HD 30 fps > OIS + EIS
1080p FHD 30 fps > OIS + EIS
1080p FHD 60 fps > OIS
4K UHD 30 fps > OIS

Hi, guys, anyone have inverted stereo on video? I tested it in recording when I tapped on the left mic first and then on the right mic. When I watched my video the first tap was from the right channel.

4k 60 fps will be added soon. Stock camera is ****, agreed. Better use Gcam, which makes great results, and raw, particularly, looks perfect. Only downside for me is the lack of optical stabilization and second tele lens camera, but you get what you pay for.

I moved on to POCO recently and found that while playing videos on FB app they look badly pixellated, especially the text parts. Youtube videos are fine. Replaced the phone, but still has the same issue. Any other person having this issue?

4k video awful. Stutters and judders whenever you move. FHD+ not much better. Quality is also not sharp. A massive let down here.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a software update soon!
I spend a good hour at huawei booth and just couldn't get an explanation why there were jitters and dropped frames at 60 fps especially when panning. Also, 4k had few dropped frames and jitters but there was some sort of warping/bending at the sides of the screen. Again , no explanation.
So wanted to get this phone and am hoping someone has some answers why (perhaps it's ok when exported to pc?) or maybe some setting i'm not aware of?

I'm using Cinema FV5, it's having a lot of manual settings, so I was able to shoot a video which looks quite more natural in low light.

I am not happy with video recording, pro mode options are limited and there's no dynamic control option i.e., you can't change settings while recording video other than zoom and focus. lot of pixel dropping in 4K, stabilization is good though, 146 has tweaked it well. another thing i noticed is long exposure shots with ISO 50 are giving lots of white dots or burnt pixels which are spoiling the photo shots. this means camera photo-detectors are not well ventilated for heat dissipation. also some of the features that Huawei boasted about such as cinematic mode are useless, low light videos are horrible...

I've been testing super slow mo (960 fps) but the quality is a bit rubbish, the lense is the same as far as i know, and at 120 fps it takes good video, despite blurring everything at 0.6x... Do you have the same problem? Is there something I'm missing about slow motion video? Thanks!

I feel the same.
But both on Note 9 and Mate 20 Pro, the lack of manual focus on slow motion is sad. I lose lots and lots of opportunity for nice slowmo videos because they are out of focus (e.g., looking out the winodow of a moving train when entering the station). Simply being able to lock the focus would make it awesome.
4K video works fine for me
As long as you move smoothly the video is very nice as long as you are outside in good light. But first remember to use "performance mode". This is very important! Of corse the stabilization is not as good as in full HD;
4k30fps is not the way to go for smooth footage with any movement involved, let's hope the market still cares about Huawei in 2k20 until kirin 990 comes along

But both on Note 9 and Mate 20 Pro, the lack of manual focus on slow motion is sad. I lose lots and lots of opportunity for nice slowmo videos because they are out of focus (e.g., looking out the winodow of a moving train when entering the station). Simply being able to lock the focus would make it awesome.

If you shoot video a lot, download Filmic Pro. It gives you full control on the camera. You'll be able to lock the focus and the exposure. Keep in mind that shooting 960fps video requires lots of lighting otherwise blur effect. The S9 has the same "issue". It is not an issue in fact it's just how it goes even for professional. Slow motion with bad lighting is a bad idea. Hope it helps

It depends a lot on what you shoot. and what texture you are looking for in your final footage. For more cinematic videos many will recommend 24fps. For slow motion high framerate. Shooting in 60fps you'll get a texture close to "real life". Hope it helps

Video recording in Iphone XSMax are gorgeous, better than Mate 20 Pro period. For Samsung S10 I don't know but my guess is that they are both better than Mate 20 Pro. Mate 20 Pro just do the work
the video recording quality is quite the disaster. i hope it is fixed in an update some point soon. i'm pretty sure my zte a7 has better video quality....sadly...
