February Update but... - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

I've got my February ota. I removed magisk root via unistall in the app but I can't install the update.
Does anyone know how to make it work?
Thanks

Had same problem. Flashing with mi flash january firmware using the clean All and lock option Solved It. On the other hand you are going to loose camera2api.

I had the same issue but hitting "try again" button fixed it and the installation went through flawlessly.

Tried 3 times and failed every time

Not yet received the Feb 19 update !

Can you sent ota capture link?

I just updated to Feb patch. I followed the Magisk guide and the install worked perfectly. https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/blob/master/docs/tutorials.md#ota-installation
The January update made my phone slow and stutter at times and there as a very big battery drain. This had never happened to me for any update before. I am happy to say that the Feb update has made my phone fast again. I will check battery usage after a full charge tonight.

Same to me. I tried many times and it still fail to install the update. Now i can't install magisk 18.1 either.

Same problem here.
I'm on stock 10.0.4.0 Rom.
Uninstalled Magisk and even installed original boot.img from unzipped Stock.zip via hotbooted TWRP.
But installation still fails.
Any Ideas?
I really would like to avoid a full wipe with MiFlashtool

A full wipe is necessary, you allowed on twrp modifications on system, for safety, take a backup and a full wipe

Thanks a lot for your answer.
But one more (noob)question:
Someone uploaded the Feb Update as ".zip"file (271 MB) in the [Fastboot][OTA] thread.
Is it installable like a ROM Dirtyflash? In other words just flash it via fastboot boot twrp.img --> Install --> xxxx.zip?

Flash system.img and boot.img only. Absolutely no need for full reflash or data wipe.
There is a high chance that you have some app which mounts system as R/W, so you'll have the same issues with next OTA update again.

Not true. It is enough to reflash system.img and boot.img only. OTA update engine checks only these two partitions for modifications.

Me too, can anyone help me with the stock boot.img of the february ota?

I got a February update (Serbia).
There are no visible changes, but I have the impression that the system is more stable and faster. some of the things I had this morning did not report a microphone error.
Whether Xiaomi corrected it or it was just my impression.
I would like to hear other people who have updated the update
My phone was not routed and it was on stock 10.0.4.0 and now it's 10.0.5.0 version

Thank you! I will try it next time.
I went for the MiFlash CleanAll solution. Which, of course, works without a problem.

Can I block the automatic download of updates?, I have limited data and don't like them forced on me. (I liked oreo a lot more than pie).

OTA Update with systemless root

I just received a notification on my 6P saying that the january security update is available. The thing is that I'm rooted with systemless root, xposed, EX Kernel and TWRP. Can I update using the update button?
With systemless I believe you should be able to.
I just posted about this too....no one got back to me. I got the same message and have more or less the same setup as you. I'm scared to reboot and update lol

No.
If you have TWRP installed you will not be able to take an OTA.
Why bother?
Just flash what you want.
Ok, so if I reboot and my phone tries to install the OTA, what happens?
I have exact the same setup and tried to let the OTA install but in TWRP it aborted because of the mismatching kernel I think (at least it said it expected the generic device name Google angler etc and in stead it found Huawei nexus 6P Dees-troy etc)
So no harm is done when you try to update other than it doesn't work
But as far as I know when using xposed there's no use for systemless root because xposed is changing system partition
This update message won't go away. Can I flash it myself through TWRP with Xposed installed?
You cannot use twrp with an OTA. You need stock recovery. Also I believe that Xposed modifies /system and that in itself would prevent the OTA with stock recovery.

Nothing happens. it'll just fail to flash the update. It'll reboot to twrp, attempt to flash the update, and it'll fail the flash. So it just won't flash. Then you'll just reboot the system and nothing will be changed. I think you can flash these minor changes, but if you try to flash a major update through OTA it won't work with out stock recovery because that's part of the flash I think

This. At this time it's the only fix. I did it as well. Never flashed a factory image via fastboot before so I was a little intimidated but Heisenberg's guide is so smooth and easy to follow I did it in about 5 minutes lol. Plus it was a great learning experience for me.
Is it likely that eventually TWRP flashable zips will make this process easier? Or is there some sort of restriction with these updates for Nexus phones that will always require fastboot?
Not sure. I do know that the above method only took me about 10 minutes. Yeah it sucks you have to utilize a PC to do it but its really not that bad. Maybe in the future someone will figure out how to implement the updates via flashable zip in recovery.
I struggle with this too. I really hope that someone will find a solution to flash it via .zip (sadly I'm more a programmer than an Android-hacker, otherwise I would try my very best right now ).
Just to point it out, it looks like the article you are referring to has been updated since it was linked. I wouldn't want to wipe userdata, so I think 11. How To Flash The Factory Images (Return To Stock But Leaving Internal Storage Intact) is what you were referring to at the time. Apologies for the resurrection.
I just used the FlashFire app to update my Nexus 6p with the February update and it worked like a charm.

Flash original unrooted B560 via TWRP and wait for OTA.
Hmm I got OTA for L29C432B581 today but I'm on unlocked bootloader, rooted and on TWRP so I haven't tried to accept the update. As I understand it, it won't work to update given that I don't have stock recovery.

You need stock boot.img and system or the OTA will fail. Just download B560 full and flash it in TWRP, that will unroot, restore stock system, restore stock boot.img, restore stock recovery. Then you can install OTA without any issues (you do not have to lock your bootloader).

B560 it's not just only the usual "update.zip" file, there's also the "update_full_hw_eu.zip" file.
If I reinstal B560 again just to get the B581 OTA, have I to reinstal both files or only "update.zip"??
Thx in advance!!

To answer my own question, i did a fresh install of 560 through twrp following this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-8/general/how-to-install-nxt-l29c432b560-official-t3540042 , but without installing rootfiles. After phone set up update to 581 was offered in system update. Tried to install (796 Mb update) but failed to pass verification.
After reboot in 'old' 560 connected phone to hisuite which offered me the full (2.2Gb) update to 581. This one installed without problems.
Rooted with Magisk afterwards.
My solution is to flash stock boot.img and update using hisuite..i was in 560 before..

Is it possible to just download the b180 update.zip and ...full_hw...zip, and flash? Instead of flashing the old b560 zips?
From 581 to 180 is a downgrade, so i guess you need to flash a downgrade package before you can flash 180 software.
boot loop after flashing boot.img, recovery.img, system.img, cust.img through fastboot. I also wipe data and cache after flashing

[Tutorial][OOS]Proper Way to Update OOS Through OTA on Rooted OnePlus 3/3T

This is what I found accidentally by myself. There is actually an easy way to flash the OTA update if you are too lazy to find a download link for the zip file(like me).
Required: TWRP(Always use the latest version to avoid problems), Any file manager
1. Download the update in settings through OTA. (Make sure full zip file is downloaded which normally exceeds 1GB.)
2. After finishing the download, open your file manager and enable the Show Hidden Files function.
3. Go to Internal Storage and find the folder named .Ota then copy the zip file to any directory you like.(Visible one which is not hidden.)
4. Reboot to TWRP and flash the zip file you downloaded, Magisk/SuperSU and other mods you like.
5. Wipe Dalvik and Cache
6. Reboot
7. Enjoy the update.
Ps: You should root your device before rebooting to prevent the TWRP from getting overwritten by stock recovery.
Well need to flash the TWRP image again so that recovery doesn't get replaced by default, correct? I guess that could be the blah blah blah part of Step 4

No, TWRP remains. Flash the full rom, flash magisk/su and reboot to recovery then to system.
And isn't this the simple basic procedure to flash the rom on a rooted device(?) I wonder how to used to do it before and also that you can find the latest rom update on downloads.oneplus.net - can't you?
Plus won't this trigger dm verity and encryption? Because I usually wait for the modified boot.img for the latest update which disables dm verity and forced encryption.

If you root before rebooting (after flashing the full update zip), TWRP will remain. If you don't root, it will overwrite TWRP with stock recovery.
The whole process is already described (and in better detail) here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70084260&postcount=3
Although admittedly, the info is not that obvious to find.

What is meant by this (the sentence I've highlighted in red font), is if you try to flash the "partial" or "patch" OTA (less than 1 GB), it will soft brick the phone (fixable if you flash the full update zip). Therefore, rooted and/or TWRP users should only flash the "full" update zip (> 1 GB).
If you get the update notification, the system should detect you have TWRP, and download only the full zip.

When we flash again doesn't it replace the twrp with the stock recovery?

Yep, you are right it was a misunderstanding as I have been reading quite some posts mentioning how their phones got bricked when updating through OTA. I should have understood the whole situation better, my bad here. That "blablabla" actually means other mods that we are flashing along like Arise Sound and etc which are neither important nor will they affect the update. Anyway, I am going to edit the op. Thanks for the advic though.

If you update and immediately root, TWRP will remain.
If you update, and don't root, then yes TWRP may be replaced with stock recovery.

Not sure why it's not booting. But you might try to download the full update again, and install in TWRP (wipe Dalvik and cache, then flash): http://downloads.oneplus.net/oneplus-3t/oneplus_3t_oxygenos_4.1.7/

Only other think I can think of, is to do a full wipe (data, Dalvik, cache - the default wipe in TWRP). But you may not like that.
Or make sure you are on latest TWRP 3.1.1-2, or reflash TWRP.

When you install twrp, forget about updates. You need to flash full stock image using miflash application on Windows. I had the same problem, flashed stock images using miflash and update worked! I did not even lose my phone data.
Edit: Just boot into twrp to flash magisk. Don't flash twrp or system update will fill after downloading.
I was in the same situation (even if i've never flashed twrp).
Solved by flashing 17.10.30 Rom (after that I got the update)

If you have done multiple tweaks, I suppose that those were done to system directly. In such case you'll need to flash system partition as well. Both are included in full ROM, just extract them from archive http://en.miui.com/download-333.html.

I think you will have to either reset it or you will have to reflash the system. But I have never heard such things, some people on Mi forums says, OTA works even after root, but the device's stock bootloader will be flashed over twrp.
No problem! It'll just install and you'll have Oreo installed without root

I rooted mine via magisk. I should have uninstalled the root via magisk but the thought escaped me as i was with friend at that time. Now i don't know what to do.

I've tried to redownload the update and at no cost. Idk if i have to do a factory reset or reflash a stock mi a1 ROM
factory reset does not work I have tried it. The only option i can see is flashing the stock oreo rom from mi global using mi flash and then updating it.

Let me know how it went. And are you flashing by booting with twrp or mi flash?

I'll be able to tell you tomorrow. My data is all dried up and internet will just be installed tomorrow lol. But i'll flash using miflash. Hopefully it works. I want the gcam app to work again and also for my device to be updated.

Just make sure you select the option to save user data in MiFlash before you start.
