Installed the Google Framework Magisk module and then the Google dialer. However, every time I switch the phone theme to Dark or Colorful, the dialer goes dark with unreadable blue numbers on a dark background. Changing the accent color of the theme has no impact on the dialer appearance. Changing the phone theme back to light does not change the dialer theme. The dialer settings themselves seem to have a theme option but it is greyed out. Deleting cache and data from the dialer has no impact. The only way to get back a whole dialer is to uninstall and then reinstall from the store.
Is this normal? Is there a way to control the Google dialer theme independently from the phone theme without substratum or additional modules?
Do you have Google Contacts installed? I believe the theme is linked to the Contacts app which has the option to change the theme. Mine changed when I had both installed.

Did you also try the Google messenger? Put the messenger on dark theme in settings too.

That option is greyed out. I mentioned this in my OP but should have probably made it more clear. The strange thing is that if the phone theme is Light that option is not even there in the dialer. If I set the theme to Dark or Colorful on the phone the option poos up but is greyed out
Messenger is already on a dark theme, that can be controlled independently from the phone theme.
Update: apparentlythere is a bug in messenger so when you put it in dark theme it also looks the dialer on dark theme. Ugh. The two most used apps on my phone, Gmail and messenger, insist on featureless themes. Time to dump at least one of them.

On my Herald, when choosing the HTC Default themse, you get the nice green theme and the phone dialer is also green. On other themes it tells you you need to reboot and then the phone dialer screen changes to a grey black colour.
How can you build themes to change the dialer screen also, or just change the theme without changing the dialer screen.
Hi,
I have the XT1625 (G4) rooted and running stock. All the action appears to be in the G4 Plus forums, so I'm posting here. Anyway, I'm not a fan of the MM theme (white bg with the putrid green accent/settings icons). I would love to change to a dark theme/background and change the accent color to something aesthetically pleasing. I've tried using both Layers and Substratum, but have only had varying degrees of success. Using Deity in both Layers & Substratum is a fail. I select red for my accent and/or primary colors but still get a blue theme. Inversion works for the most part but notifications are not readable due to black on black...plus it retains the purtrid green accents. I believe both themes also have problems in Contacts with black on black. I'm currently using Pigment in Layers. It kind of does what I want but not totally.
I have decompiled apps for other phones and been able to change some themes/colors, but am not sure which xml/value(s) to modify for the G4. My priorities are to change the green accent, and then, if possible, invert the white to black. I've looked into creating a Substratum theme but feel over-whelmed by the process atm. If I can do this simply by modding system apps that would be great!
Thanks,
I have learned the putrid green color I do not like is actually "Teal"...silly me.
I attempted to create a Substratum theme following this guide, but it is too complex (for me, at least). However, I have decompiled my framework, settings, and SystemUI and attempted to theme them according to this guide. I have successfully changed the putrid "teal" to a nicer red. Unfortunately, my background is still white although I have edited the apps to have a dark background. For some reason the change is not taking effect. Also, my expanded header color is not changing either.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the (late) replies everyone. Since I originally posted in December I have already learned the limitations of stock ROMs and Substratum.
I have also moved on to Lineage OMS 14.1 and am able to theme to my heart's content...I'm good to go!
I want to install a "dark" theme for my S8 Snapdragon that's in the S7 forum. Can I do this on S8 without root (using Package Disabler method)?
If this is possible, will there be any glitches I should be aware of ahead of time? If I can do this, I may never root... well, probably will just to get rid of Samsung-ware.

Use the themes in the theme store under settings. There are dark free ones.

Themes in the "Theme Store" can't change the Messaging app color / text box color, can it? I'm looking for something to give me as much white text on black background as possible in apps / System UI / dialer.
I don't mind paying for a theme in the Theme Store if this can be accomplished.

The "High Contrast Theme" from Samsung has a pure black background with white text in the stock messaging app (for free).

I won't have my S8 until tomorrow - any chance you could point me to screenshots of the Messaging and Settings apps? Or perhaps post them for me if it's not too much trouble
Really appreciate it.

Thanks for that. The white text input box at the bottom is what I was hoping I could make white on black. I've used a few themes around XDA that could do this - like this one I'm currently using on my S6:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/themes/theme-samsung-galaxy-s8-t3582967
I bet there is a user made theme that blacks that out as well but I've only tried a few. I'll let you know if I come across one.
EDIT - Hmm it seems like all of the black themes on the Samsung app have the white text box, maybe they don't allow that to be changed on the stock app?
I have been playing around with Textra for messaging and it allows you to customize the look, see attached image. I think you could make those blue accents black as well.

I like that - I think I'll give that a try.
Yeah there are some elements the Samsung Theme Engine won't allow user created themes to change, at least from my understanding. The High Contrast theme and the use of Textra look like good options until we have root.
Thanks again!
Speaking of themes...Does anyone know if it is possible to get a plain black status bar (not transparent) with white text at the top of the screen all the time (without root)?

Definitely with Nova Launcher.
Forgive me if this has already been asked.
Is there a way to change the green in-call background color to another color?
The stock green isn't appealing. All I really want is black.
I ended up using Google dialler. The green is horrible
How to disable stock green dialer and use Google instead?
I have tried everything in the user interface. Does not seem to work. I choose different themes - the platinum and the black one, but then these have wrapped icons which are horrible as well. Any solution welcome.

Settings-Pograms-setup-dafaults-set google dialer as default
you can find a good amount of themes on the Play Store by searching LG G6 theme, many of them have different dialer colors.

I use the black theme. I didn't like the borders around the icons either. I read that is an option in the display settings but I don't have it on mine -- maybe it is dependent on the theme. At any rate I installed Nova so I can be rid of those icon borders.
So if your main objection to the other themes is the icon borders, try an alternative launcher.
i updated to android 8.0 today and the first thing i noticed after reboot is that some of my icons have white boxes around them. so i thought i would just change the icons to fix it. that did not work some of the icons did change but the white boxes remain. i then thought it was time for a theme change so i went and found a springy like puppy theme to use. that went badly also. None of the icons on the screen are from the new theme. in the screenie provided the green arrow shows the white box and the one icon that changed. the red arrow is the original themes icon set. the blue icon is the original theme icon with the white box around it. i have tried changing wallpapers and icons and themes but the icons do not change anymore.

Try to apply the theme again
And in settings there is an option to turn off icon backgrounds.

that did not work
only the home screen being affected made me thing.i had forgotten that i had installed the pixel 2 launcher in android 7. i went and turned it off and went back to defaults it all is working. so i uninstalled it and re downloaded it and reinstalled and it is working so it looks like the app did not like the upgrade.
looks like the theme hasn't been updated to make it compatible with Oreo.
it isn't the theme that has the issue as i tried 5-6 themes all having the same issue. it was the pixel launcher did not like being installed in android 7 then upgraded to 8. once i uninstalled the launcher and then reinstalled it all is working as expected.
i thought only i had that problem i use apex launcher on note 8 and after i apply theme or icon pack it is not changing
I just use the "vanilla" Samsung launcher, and I have this issue, even with a setting reset. I really don't want to do a factory.
I am having same issue but I have no launcher installed. Just using it theme. What I found is that the setting under
Settings - - > display - - > frame icons
is on and grayed out. Can't figure out how to ungray it

It looks like Oreo has brought new feature called Adaptive Icons.
Apparently until developers would have enabled their stuff to support it you still be watching white area surrounding the legacy icons.
This is why I've switched to Nova, but unfortunately loosing numeric notification badges
