Moto G4 (2016) custom ROM - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

Good day,
recently I learned that Motorola/Lenovo stopped to deliver security updates for my Motog G4 (without plus) 2016 phone. Since I dont want to throw away a smartphone which is just two and a half years old, the only option seems to be a custom ROM.
Does anyone know a stable, supported, trouble-free, and easy to install custom rom for this phone? I dont mind the android version, I just want to receive the security patches. LineageOS, the only custom ROM I used in the past for other phones, does not support this device any more (it was called "athene" there).
Thanks for any help,
Gregor

The forum for Moto G4 Plus seems to have more options for custom roms (you can use g4 plus roms on a g4, they are both athene).
I am now using OMNI rom (android pie). https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/development/rom-omnirom-moto-g4-plus-t3874452
It is stable, has a similar battery drain as Lineage OS.

Thanks for the reply, I will try OMNI. Is the battery life better or even worse compared to the original firmware? Whats the security patch level on your phone?

The security patch is 5th January 2019.
As for battery life compared to the stock rom I don't know the exact figures sorry (it's been a while since I had stock rom on the phone).

Stable Oreo? Please read completely

I am wanting to unlock my new moto g5 plus. I have to have it for work so the rom has to be the five 9s. I am not trying to start a word war just a simple question. Yes I have done some searching and so far I have gotten many conflicted statements. I have RETUS on 93-8 build. Any help would be great
What is the most stable and close to AOSP Oreo rom we have?
Also I have a Full Backup of 93-8. If you have TWRP and want to go back to stock just restore. Let it boot. most things didnt work. Reboot into recovery and factory reset I did it X3 just old habit and reboot everything is working fine. will update post with link if anyone is interested
Thank you
P.S. MODS I am not trying to have a best rom thread here. Each rom has features each person wants etc etc. If it starts to get crazy please remove thread.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Now, I'm currently in AOSP Extended and works like a charm, even on camera and the OBB bug that some Oreo ROMs have it's fixed. There's Pixel Experience, but the ROM it hasn't been updated since February; it's really stable but it has problems with the camera in some apps and other small bugs. If you want personalization and stability, go for AOSPExtended. If you want only stability and lightweight Pixel/AOSP alike experience, go for PE or LineageOS (I haven't tried this ROM yet, but it is there). Good luck!

I think AOSP Extended is a good choice.
It's in active development, has the major Oreo bugs fixed, nice features and a good performance.
But it shouldn't be unsaid that I haven't found a custom rom that could hold a candle to stock in terms of battery and stability.
And don't forget that there could be major issues when you want to go back to stock like losing IMEI, 4g or voLTE. Be sure to have a backup especially of EFS.
All custom roms are build without a "real android 8" for Moto G5+ so maybe it could be worth waiting for stock Oreo.

I am trying it now, the only problem I have is since I was on 93-8 there is no full firmware yet. I cant go to 93-4 get invalid everything. So until that firmware is released guess its custom for me hopefully Oreo comes soon so we can get any small issues in Oreo roms ironed out. Deff been a fun day playing with roms
Im using OmniROM for a month or so.
Good battery (from 5am to aprox. 11pm with 2h+ of music listening, and general usage)
Câmera I personally dont use much but works fine.
Is fast and stable nothing to complain about.
Im not using FOR work anymore since I got another job, but I certainly sure if I have to, the phone will work fine.
I've been using nitrogen os for a few months now and never had one reboot and battery is better than stock with my usage.
I thankfully did a full backup before I did anything so I can go back to stock rom with stock recovery

Install a Rom or not?

Hello there. I have this phone since last year, and it's a nice model. Not the best because, first, my battery life has been drained a few since I've bought it (I can't reach a day with battery). Obviously, no words after the camera design, after 6 months with no falls and a nice caring, the camera started scratching. Well the thing is that I'm in doubt about changing my system to a ROM. I've done this before, but when I've installed the firmware again and updated by OTA, the phone bricked down. So I'm a little scared of doing this again. I've already learned that one time that you come from a ROM to a Firmware, you can't update by OTA. That's not the only reason. I'm waiting Oreo for too long in my phone (Motorola/Lenovo said that it will come out for our phones) so I don't know if I'll wait, or try, for example, the Resurrection Remix Oreo.
I want to know some things before doing anything of that: Can it increase the battery life? Can it get a better performance? (comparing it with the original)
Thanks.

Well the stock rom is by far the best balanced among all roms. But you must decide for your own if you need special features or something else the stock rom won't give you.
Here are some of the treads covering your questions and will help you with your decision, especially thread 4:

All current oreo roms for athene are in beta stage, none of them is stable. This is because of the lack of necessary drivers and blobs of oreo for athene which will be in the first official stock oreo release from Lenovorola.
About battery and performance, honestly no oreo custom rom can beat latest rooted stock nougat firmware. You can test the latest oreo 8.1 build (both 32-bit and 64-bit) roms and help developers by providing log cat but my suggestion is to stick to stock 7.0 for now as daily driver.
Root 7.0, use a custom kernel of your choice, tweak your rom using a kernel manager of your choice, and you'll get more than one day of battery life (if optimized) and best performance out of your hardware by overclocking and changing cpu and gpu governers.

What's is your current daily driver? Or what's the best rom for s5 in your opinion

So our galaxy s5 is 4 years old now and it is still the main device of many users as we know there are great roms for this phone now snapdragon and as well as exynos so i want to know what is your current rom and why(post screenshot if you like to)
My daily driver is : dotOS 2.3.1
Why: cause it is fast stable and it's has latest version of Android(oreo) and some of Android P style and theme and the best part of it it doesn't lag no matter what you install
And also used nemsis reborn v5 and it is the best of s8(note7) port
Thanks

I use an LG G6 as my main device, but I use my S5 a lot... and I have to say Resurrection Remix (based on LineageOS/android 8.1.0) is amazing.... (I don''t use data, so I haven't tested that part) The UI is responsive, it runs great, super customizable, love it! (also kinda funny that the S9 doesn't officially have 8.1 yet, but someone made a ROM for 8.1 on the S5 :/)

Thanks for the reply
Yeah rr oreo is great also but they are really slow to bring updates to oreo ( i don't why) but in naught there was a lot of updates
Thanks again
stock rom, very stable, compatible and battery frienldy
My S5 is running still great !
Using it to type this. Running lineage 14.1 updated all the way to 15. Heard it was buggy so i didn't update to Lineage 15
Daily driver till September. Hah it for 3 years
Using almost a month: noise rom v4, sparkplug kernel, magisk manager and s health working great. Having little issues with bluetooth speakers/earpods (need to switch on/off 2 times to listen something), and battery duration it almost a day, with gps and sync turned on. If there any rom to use daily, that is noise rom :good:
How is the battery life compared to stock? Especially screen on time?

use a galaxy a8 as a daily phone and the s5 as a second phone use linage os 15.1 official; the phone is fuido like never before. thank you all for the hard work
For me, it's LineageOS. But I cannot use it due to some strange sound problems, that's why I'm looking for an alternative that has OTA update included.
The stock isn't that good because it's bloated, you cannot do much without root, and if you root the stock rom, you wouldn't be able to install OTA updates, you'll need a computer or something to make it manually, on S5 stock rom you mix the sdcard + manual to get more space. The only 2 things that the stock rom are good for, IMO, it's the battery.. it lasts longer. Also, the camera is better, using any ROM, even with xposed, you can't get much when talking about the camera. The stock will always be better than any available rom.
My daily driver was the "xXx NoLimits" -Rom, which is based on stock.
The main point why it was this rom is the battery drain. LineageOS 14.1 especially 15 has a very high battery drain, so I've downgraded to Stock Rom and was happy
I like it, that LineageOS has a very good performance and clean design, but battery time is everything for me
Another point is the camera, because the camera in LineageOS isn't that good like the stock camera from Samsung-Roms.
LineageOS based roms do have much features and are smaller but at the end the stock rom wins for me :fingers-crossed:
After some trouble and frustration I'll stick with Resurrection Remix 6.1 (Oreo 8.1). It uses much less memory, is stable and fast. Amazing. It feels like I got a brand new phone. The S5 is a decent device. I use it extensively and don't see any reasons why I should buy a newer model.

What's about battery drain?
I've made the experience that the battery life is very bad with Oreo Roms ?
I never liked stock based ROMs so the only ones I've actually used are TouchWiz ones and the best from those is Nemesis Reborn. But recently I decided to go back to stock S5 ROM to get the most out of my device as nothing beats the firmware with which your phone came when new. I'll be buying the Note 10 after the S11 comes out so will stick to my S5 for another 1.5 years, bought it in February 2015.
l have a crDROID 7.1.2 klte v3.8.5 rom on my s5 and it runs great.
lve tried a couple of 8.1 roms but for some reason everytime l turn on or restart
my s5 it takes about 30 seconds for it to get pass the Samsung Galaxy logo
before the boot animation comes on.
l dont know why it does that l'll stick with what works for me....
I use an S5 prime with lineage 14 as a daily driver. I struggled with the battery life for a while until I installed 3c toolbox. It does what it says on the tin.
The built in camera app doesn't work, but there are others that work. I'm not bothered about quality.

Suggest Rom with the best battery performance

Hi guys,
After a disappointing stay at Oreo for several months, I downgraded to Nougat. Things are a bit better but far from marshmallow I recalled when I got the phone.
I got a bit older so I am not so fond of trying different roms every month.
So before downgrading to stock marshmallow for good , is there any other rom with a better battery performance? I just need a stable rom (I don't care if it is not supported anymore) with the most optimum battery life.
Is that too much to ask?

Best battery life without you having any involvement would probably be straight stock.. You can get as good battery life as you want with any rom by taking control, with root apps for disabling system services and apps, firewall, kernel tweaks, etc... If you're not interested in doing the work, just use straight stock rom with Greenify or something.
OmniROM, actually the best battery/performance ROM on this device http://dl.omnirom.org/kugo/

Levone1, my attempt to do so in Oreo failed miserably
It was better though, but far from ideal. Maybe though I didn't mess with kernel, so I can't really blame Oreo (yet!).

Reccomended Rom and/or Tweaks?

Its been a long time since I've flashed anything on my pure ( I think it's on a slightly tweaked stock marshmallow rom now), and looking around I can't seem to find a recommended rom.
What would you all suggest as the current most stable and fully functional roms and tweaks that I should be looking for?

I recommend updating to stock nougat and flashing the system with SuperSu for root. It's the most stable rom and I get a solid four hours of battery life. Lineage OS has bugs with sound and the audio effects aren't as good. Also Lineage OS has a battery profile I figured out that Stock has one like that but it functions dynamically as the battery life drops the clock speeds automatically reduce and cores turn off but on Lineage based roms if you leave it on balanced it'll drain the battery faster but if you put it on power save you'll struggle with lag and get the same battery life as stock. If you take my advice I don't recommend changing anything in the kernel except the I/0 schedular I set mine to ROW instead of CFQ and apps open faster. Another thing with stock roms don't try changing the partition format in TWRP that'll make it bootloop some people like to set their cache to f2fs and Magisk causes bootloops that's another issue with stock.

Is that Android Ice Cold Project? If so, after looking it up, only see for the Moto G5. Guess they stopped for the Moto X Pure?

They haven't released anything new for the pure/style since nougat, and old builds have been shuffled off their website. Look at the last few pages of this thread. Some users mirrored the last builds after the downloads disappeared. https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/rom-aicp-clark-xt1575-t3222868
My pure died a little over a year ago, but at that time aicp was the best rom. The newer custom roms all seem to have some camera issues. The builds of aicp that are available do require the marshmallow modem stack.
