Same ROM (rooted B35 Stock) & same TWRP (3.2.1) on two phones. Phone #1 is user setup with apps, Phone #2 is a clean install. There is a TWRP backup from Phone #1 on the ext SDcard. Thinking to make Phone #2 a "clone" of #1, I put the ext SDcard into Phone #2 thinking to restore the BU.
From the ROM of #2 the file manager can see all of the files on the extSD, but in recovery TWRP does not see any of the files. Why would this be? And is there a solution? Thanks.
EDIT: issue Resolved (if not fully understood) . . . I made a TWRP backup of the Phone #2 clean install to internal storage. From inside the ROM I then copied the Phone #1 TWRP backup to the same folder. Then restored the backup. A few internal sdcard folders needed manual copying, but all now works as expected.

Hi,
I've got Xoom 3.2 and I wanted to perform a backup. Clockwork 4.0.0.4 is what it says is the latest. I also have an Ext SD.
I did a backup as I usually do it from recovery, but it took too long... I reboot and I saw that I was running out of space, already 2.5GB.
My questions are:
- Is it trying to backup the entire Internal SD card?? That is about 30GB of data! I have a Nexus one and I am used to it just backing up that system to external SD? How can I do the backup on xoom without it backing up my Media and music and the big game data?
- Is there a way to make it back up to the External SD card instead of internal?
Will performing a WIPE wipe only system, or will it also wipe the Internal SD?
Thanks,

Yes, that version only sees the internal "sdcard" and will try to make a nandroid of it. You really need to install/reinstall the solarnz R4c Version 3.2.0.0 which was made specifically for the Xoom or at least the Rogue recovery which is based on v 4 but is also customised for the Xoom. As it is, you will not be able to flash from your internal sdcard either.
See, newer isn't always better.
Thanks a lot for the info. I tried to get 3.2.0.0 but when I went to Rom Manager, and looked under the other versions, there was no 3.2.0.0. I guess I have to download from some website and install?
So, say I go and I install 3.2.0.0.
It will see the External, I don't see any setting to specify where backups should go, will 3.2.0.0 aautomatically backup to external sd?
How about what gets backed up from Internal? Id on't want it all backed up!
Thanks,
So, I used 3.2.0.0 and backup went a lot better. Thanks it backed up to my external. The size is 2.5gb out of an internal sd of about 20gb.
I just need to know what it backed up from my internal sd and what it didn't?

One more thing rom manager now only sees the backups on the internal.. so I have to restore from recovery since backs are stored on external.
Just a bit screwed up this whole thing
Both recovery and from manager should have options to let user specify where to back and restore.

I actually stopped using ROM Manager for that reason.
CWM recovery backs up your system image. To further back up apps and their associated data, use Titanium Backup.
And doing a restore from the recovery menu is correct. You can use ROM Manager to get into recovery as long as you don't get tricked into "updating" to another version of cwm recovery.
You could also fool clockwork to thinking it its latest version flashed. This way you can still use rom manager if you choose and still have the latest modded custom recovery.
1. Open Superuser and "Forget" ROM Manager.
2. Open ROM Manager, and Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
3. After it downloads, it'll ask for superuser. Uncheck "Remember," and Deny superuser access.
4. Go to /sdcard/clockworkmod/download/download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/, and rename the file that just downloaded to [whateverItIs].img.real. (The next step will be easier if you copy the filename first.)
5. Copy the x. x. x. x to this location & rename it to whatever the new ROM Manager download was called.
6. Open ROM Manager, and Flash ClockworkMod Recovery again.
7. This time, Allow superuser.
First of all a big THANKS! I successfully installed the triple boot SD Card. I see there is an update with a new zip file. As a newby I want to make sure I understand correctly: I will burn the zip img to a clean SD Card, install it, power up, and basically follow the steps previously including flashing the gapps, etc. I can then copy anything I have in the old SD Card 7th partition to the new 7th partition. Is that correct? I am asking to make sure I don't just copy something into the existing partitions on the existing SD Card.
When I updated racks triple boot, i did not reinstall Gapps. Just reloaded everything from my Titanium bu and there it all was.
Thanks
Thanks, that is a good idea. May I ask, did you use your existing SD Card and put the zip on the 7th partition and use a blank formatted SD Card. I just wonder if the zip will create new partitions or simply overwrite the existing files in the existing partitions.

You don't need a blank formatted card. The zip overwrites files in the existing partitions on your current SD but doesn't create new ones. Nothing on the 7th partition (the SD partition) is affected, nor are your downloaded market apps in the /data partitions. Personally, I have created a folder in the emmc for all the flashable zips. The CWM recovery allows you to install the zips from the internal sd (emmc) instead of the sd sd (7th partition). That way, I can flash zips to a backup or test sd, and flash to my working sd if everthing's OK.
Thanks again
Thanks once again. Those are good ideas and I will use them also. I may have been over-thinking the update but this is all new to me. Thanks again.
Can I add my inquisition to this thread as well? It is exactly what I was wondering....
I have spent a few up and running using the Triple Boot directions found here. Everything has been rock solid.
Now I'm interested in upgrading. Just wanted to make sure I understood this correctly:
1. Since the image I flashed is dated 3/4/12. then does it have all of the changes up to then already baked in? If not....
2. I don't need to do incremental updates, correct? I can just flash the newest images, right?
3. Since the primary (and I believe secondary as well) ROMs have been changed, I need to "boot into the CWM that is included with the dualbootSD and go to "mounts and storage" and choose to format "/system1" "/data1". Remember to also wipe cache."
4. I will need to reinstall all of the following?: gapp and the calendar-email-tts fix even if installing the latest release
Thanks so much. Loving what I've been able to do so far...but just had too many questions to proceed forward with any degree of confidence.
Thanks!

Although a newby I think I can help as I went through the same process. Of course this applies only to Racks triple boot option and how I have done it.
1) What he is doing is upgrading the complete zip file with the most current files so it is complete as in the first install. You could actually install it following the original install instructions.
2) Correct
3) No, it will overwrite any existing files in the partitions with the new, upgraded files.
4) If you have used Titanium to back up your apps and data(which I recommend) - Titanium is one of the apps Racks includes - then no. Once you boot up, etc and have everything running you can run Titanium to restore your apps and data.
Remember that if you update only from the zip you will only have those apps and data that were included originally. Your SDCard partition will remain unchanged so if you have apps/data on that partition then those will simply have to be reloaded/restored.
Hope this helps.
Great...had to give you a "Thanks".
I figured he was updating the original install to include newest upgraded files. Maybe the DualBoot image is not 100% updated? (The image I just installed was dated 3/4, but there are updates dated 3/6 and 3/26). Not sure if I should update those or not.
The file I installed was Mirage_CM7_ICS_CM9_DualbootSD.img.zip dated 3/4/12. I have not yet installed any updated.
Thanks for the additional info. I actually didn't have anything of consequence up to this point as I just decided to do a fresh install on a new 8GB Sandisk card with slightly better random write speeds than the old 4GB card. No data of consequence will be lost, but I will look into Titanium for the future upgrades.
Thanks!
Nice. Did the updates, but had to reinstall gapps. Will try titanium next time. Loving being able to mess around with ICS. Will have to play around as I get more time.
One last question....I only downloaded and updated the mirage CM7 and Encore CM9 files.
I did not update and encore MIUI files, as, if I understand this correctly, this will take the place of my current mirage CM7 boot image...so I will have this brand new interface.
With the Triple boot, you get a flavor of ICS, but you need to choose whether you waint either "CM7 mirage" or "MIUI". And if I choose MIUI...I need to decide whether I want ICS or GB. Is that about right?
Thanks.
Thanks!
hello, I backed up my eclipse ROM to my external storage using safestrap, I did not choose the Compress into zip file option I didn't think it would make a difference. So I decided to delete the ROM and try reinstalling my my backup that I had just created. just in case I really need to do it. I did all the steps again, created slot 1 wipe data, (I compressed the zip in order to flash it) the name of my backup file is TWRP.but anyways when trying to flash it it immediately says Failure. any ideas? I have safestap 3.11 installed.
Never found, I got it lol
I had two, fairly recent, Nandroid backups on my phone that I copied to my computer.. Over the weekend I "jacked up" my phone and ended up having to format it, which means I lost everything... I wasn't worried because I had those 2 Nandroids, so I did a reset and then copied those to my phone and tried to restore them, but they didn't show up?? Here's what I did: I opened up the TWRP folder on my computer and copied the folder (and all it's contents) over to the TWRP folder already established on my phone.
I then flashed a ROM and tried restoring just the data in TWRP, but it didn't see the backups.... I let the phone reboot, downloaded Nandroid Manager and it found the backups with no problem, so I rebooted and tried to restore just the data again, TWRP still didn't find any backups.
How can I make this work for future reference, because I know I'll jack it up again.
Just to be sure you put the backup in the right place: TWRP folder which contains>BACKUPS folder which contains> Folder with random numbers and letters which contains the actual backup folder with the date stamp which contains the backup files.
I don't know if all that is necessary but maybe TWRP does look in that order. In the past when I've done that kind of restore I always save the folder with the random numbers and letters to my PC and then after wiping my phone and reinstalling TWRP I create a new BACKUPS folder in TWRP to put the folder with the random numbers and letters in. My restores done that way always worked for me.
Hello,
I've installed twrp 3.0.2-r5 on my Moto G4 Play reteu.
In the last months I was running a Lineage OS based on 7.1.2.
Before I did this installation I created a backup with TWRP.
As there is now the official release of Android 7.x from Moto I want to switch back to stock rom.
The old backup is currently placed on SD\TWRP\BACKUPS\ZY223PZFVW\2016-10-16--23-17-52
and contains these files:
boot.emmc.win
boot.emmc.win.md5
data.f2fs.win
data.f2fs.win.md5
data.info
recovery.log
system.ext4.win000
system.ext4.win000.md5
system.ext4.win001
system.ext4.win001.md5
system.info
So started twrp and tried to recover the backup.
I can choose to restore:
Data
System
Boot
System 1882MB and Boot 16MB can be restored without any problem.
But while restoring DATA (54MB) Twrp says:
Code:
E: Unable to find file system (first period).
E: Unknown restore method for '/external_sd
So what does this error mean? I tried to solve by copying the whole backup to internal storage but if I do so I will not be recognized by TWRP as a backup to be restored.
In which folder has the backup, an which files, to be placed on the internal storage?
Thank you for you help

Although not a direct answer I have found TWRP 3.x has difficulty restoring if the underlying files/folders are separated from the parent.
As for the data partition you can probably skip that and simply wipe in TWRP. Boot, recovery and system are the most important if your goal is returning to stock.
Not sure how important stock recovery is if manually flashing vs accepting an OTA update. More experienced minds will need to weigh in.
