Backup and restore the image - Samsung Galaxy J5 Questions & Answers

Hello,
How can I backup the image of the phone to SD Card to restore it on another phone?
I booted to the safe mode, but I don't see any "backup options". Is it possible with regular (built-in) applications or should I change the bootloader?
Thank you!

Yes.
Tou have to be rooted and have ClockworkMod recovery installed.
1) Access the recovery mode menu by pressing and holding the Volume Down key and Power button.
2) Go to backup and restore > backup (to save in external SD) OR backup to internal sdcard (to save in internal SD)
3) Wait for the process to finish.
An app is available on the play store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5oM3IzdDFjLm9ubmFuZGJ1cCJd) that can perform a nandroid backup without switching to recovery mode.
In either case, it is mandatory to have a rooted device.
Be aware that the latter method CAN do bakups, but CANNOT perform restores, therefore having a CWM enabled recovery is mandatory, as well.
Will I lose cwm and root if I restore?
Because when you flash something througt odin you lose cwm and root
No, you don't loose anything when you restore with CWM. You loose root and CWM when you flash a firmware with Odin.

[Q] App Restore Issue

Quick background:
I was running stock Android 4.2.1 with a custom kernel & recovery (TWRP) and decided to install CM's latest rom. I forgot to make a backup before installing the new rom and, because I didn't want to lose all of my app data, I did not do a factory reset after installing the CM rom. This caused me to end up in a broken state with Android being stuck at the boot animation. To prevent myself from breaking anything else, I made a backup of this broken state using TWRP. I then proceeded to factory reset which got Android working again.
Question:
I have some app data (read: game saves) in the broken TWRP backup that I would like to recover. Is there a way to pull app data from the TWRP backup that I can use to restore the app using Titanium, TWRP, or something else?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply! I just tried doing that and the backup is detected, but no apps/app data show up. The list is blank.
Is there anything else I should try or is my data just gone?

Bootloop and Nandroid Backup

Hey guys, so I'm in a bootloop and can't boot into my phone. I had a Nandroid backup on my Nexus 4 but I recently deleted it because I was running out of storage, so I moved it to my PC. So my question is, is there a way to use that Nandroid backup on my PC to restore my phone?

Yes. You boot in recovery, and use "adb push" to push the nandroid backup to your storage. Are you using TWRP or CWM?

Twrp doesnt backup

Hi,
I try to make a backup using twrp on my external sd card......
It beginns but after a few minutes i become this error:
http://www.abload.de/img/bvqg5.jpg
I have the same problem, did not find a solution.
memory card or internal storage? try backup the internal storage
I have the same issue i read the log of twrp and found that one specific app give this error , uninstalled it ,but after that it gave me the same error for another app.
This error has to do with permissions.
Search on net and the only solution that i found it's to full wipe the phone.
I didn't do it because i'm to lazy to install all apps and settings again

Do not make the backup from the recovery!
Use it just to store your backup preference (set "external SD" on the selected storage pop-up).
After, use the app to backup data, system and boot partitions.. The recovery will launch automatically and the backup will be done and save on your external SD.
EDIT: even easier... Just select your external SD path on setting tab (TWRP app)...
Im not having a hard time creating a back up using twrp at all

can't extract apps from nandroid made otg with twrp

My phone was stuck in a bootloop where it could only get to recovery. Using the recovery I created a nandroid backup to the a USB stick using an OTG cable. I flashed the stock firmware and got things setup but I can't restore individuals apps from the nandroid. I copied the nandroid from the usb to sd card but it still doesn't work. I tried restoring apps using Nandroid Manager but when the app is launched it gives the error "app has stopped, close app". For some reasons sms succesfully restored but no user apps. I tried restoring with AppExtractor but it gives the error "unable to generate apk listing"
I also have titanium backup pro but couldn't get it to find the location of the nandroid to try extracting with it.
Any ideas? I really just want my messages back from Whatsapp.
My phone had stock Nougat with busybox installed and elementalx kernel. It should be the same environment now as when the backups were made.
@twoplustwo can you tell us why your phone went into bootloop ? If you know then you can restore /data from TWRP and revert the cause of bootloop..
Also can you confirm it's in capital letters as you have mentioned in small letters in another thread that twrp/backups rename them to TWRP/BACKUPS or move them to internal storage.. (in stock ROM if i am not wrong, TWRP folder is not accessible, so try to install custom ROM for temporary purpose, then move backup to internal and then try with titanium backup..)

yes it was in capital letters
the problem in the first place that sent the phone into a bootloop was I installed the OTA security update. I'm running stock rom but I guess because it was rooted and had busybox, that made it incompatible with the update?

If you have TWRP and take update, it don't cause bootloop, but it cause your device to boot into recovery when you turn on your device.. can you confirm if it was bootloop or problem of booting to TWRP ?
I am unable to copy the nandroid to internal storage. I tried using usb to computer and it just does nothing. I tried root explorer and it says 'copy failed' and file manager says 'cannot load'. This only happens with the TWRP folder inside the internal memory specifically.

I can confirm it was only booting TWRP. So even when I tried to boot to system it just booted to TWRP again.

You don't need to worry,
Do you have any important data for any app currently ?
Take backup of new important data with titanium.. (and then again take backup from TWRP, for safety )
And then simply restore /data from TWRP backup, it will give you older data back without any bootloop but you will loose new data/messages that you got after flashing/ on current running ROM..

Thank you sir! To confirm, when backing up to USB stick with OTG, does the format of the USB matter? Is fat32 safe?

Not familiar with different formats, it should work.. bu t
You can backup to internal storage too, since you don't have to flash fastboot ROM again..
