[guide] [root] [unlock bootloader] [ta backup] noob easy

Hello Everyone
I understand that many of the users have tough time rooting their device and thus I have decided to look into Rooting using Exploit method over USB commands rather than flashing ROM. I would just look into what could be done as there are few differences between Z3 Compact device series but all use the same Snapdragon 801. This guide is intended for UNLOCKED & LOCKED BOOTLOADER. Make sure you check each method if it supports locked/unlocked bootloader or not. In case it is not mentioned, it is to be understood that it supports locked bootloader as well. However, if the method fails, please provide feedback and also update SuperSU in the script files.

PREREQUISITE
-USB DEBUGGING
For this guide to work, make sure usb debugging is enabled.
Go to Settings> About>Build Number> tap it 7 times and "Developer Options" should appear in settings.
In Developer Options> Enable USB Debugging.
-USB DRIVERS
For these I suggest use Flashtool. However if you still have problem. I would update a guide for that as well
http://www.flashtool.net/index.php
METHOD 1 (Kitkat/Lollipop. Unlocked/Locked Bootloaders)
1.Download latest SuperSU from HERE
2.Place supersu in your sd card
3.Install recovery from the link HERE and use the method as stated in the thread.
4.Once booted into recovery, flash supersu.zip. Make sure it is 2.37 or above for LP.
5.Done
Check FAQ 1
How to make a TA backup.
1. Download the latest version of Backup TA from here DOWNLOAD HERE
2. Extract the ZIP file to a folder location of your choosing.
3. Navigate to the folder location of Backup TA.
4. Make sure no other script or application which is using ADB is running.
5. Make sure the device is booted in normal mode (the way you normally use it).
6. Run Backup-TA.bat
7. Read the last paragraph of the license before continuing.
8. Read the information and follow the instructions given by the tool.
Someone pointed out that the script needs root to work.
UNLOCK bootloader from Official Website
http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
Please note! It will only be possible to unlock the boot loader for certain releases of this model. You can check if it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your device by checking the service menu.
Open the Contacts app.
Click the menu button in the top right.
Click Settings.
Long press (for about 5 seconds) somewhere in the empty space just above soft key bar, and then release your finger. A button named Enter service code will then appear in the same area (this may take a few tries).
Click Enter service code. A dialler will appear.
Enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialler.
Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked(bootloader).
If your bootloader can be unlocked, proceed to the above website and follow the on screen instructions. You do not need to download full adb , just download the platform tools attached with this guide.
Once you have working drivers, unlock bootloader, made backups and have usb enabled, you can proceed to the actual rooting process.
Backs are highly recommended but not a must .
There are a few methods due to differences in devices and one might work on all, one or none. The methods are arranged in preferred order but not necessarily to work in the same order.
METHOD 2: Kitkat Unlocked Bootloader
Download boot.img from attachment
unlock bootloader via Sony
Flash boot.img via flashtool or fastboot commands
METHOD#3
Use Kingo Root app
Enable USB debugging and run the application.
Download from here
http://www.kingoapp.com/
You can use apk file as well but PC method is more effective.
METHOD 4
CHINESE METHOD
http://www.mgyun.com/en/GetVRoot
KingUser be installed.
Install SuperSU from market and replace Kinguser with SuperSU in SuperSU options
METHOD 5
Run kingo and Vroot at the same time using a PC!
At times this works with few devices
ROOT CHECKER BASIC FROM PLAYSTORE to check if you have root.

A: Yes, you do need root for both backup and restore to work. I would advice to use @DooMLoRD's excellent Easy Rooting Toolkit for this, when not already rooted.

Thank you so much for your feedback. The guide is still in process and I would make necessary changes as well once it is completed.
Making TA is a suggestion and NOT by any means a step to the process. I am going to work a bit as it needs editing at places

Hi Hnk1,
Sorry bothering you.
I have read so many threads on xda, and they all have too many steps and risk. I found your thread is simple and easiest to follow.
I have read your thread from http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-tablet-compact/general/root-flashing-construction-t3091763
My device: SGP621 (LTE version) Build number 23.1.A.0.167 Kitkat 4.4.4. Bootloader is Locked.
I would like to root and TA backup. Can I just follow these step from your tutorial below? Thanks.

Firstly always quote me in the right forum and NEVER ASK me questions in PM. If you next time do it, I will simply ignore.
Well, The recovery clearly states it works for your device so go ahead and flash it.

I am on 4.4.4 and 23.0.1.A.0.167. I tried method 1,3,5 and none of them works, i thinks it's because of the 23.0.1.A.0.167 is not rootable using the exploit method ?

It is wise to make @ backup. However, I have always unlocked my boot loader via official Sony website and never had any problems even without a TA backup.
Good luck
Guide updated and changes made!
I have unlocked bootloader, by oficiall way (Sony site). Phone is full reseted now. Can I back all data, whole system? I've made backup of all on the internal mem with TRWP. Will everything works normaly after that?
So if I access the service menu in the root section it says I cannot unlock the bootloader.
Is there a way to do so through unofficial means?
I did backup my TA so I just need to be able to do that :/
So far I'm unable to unlock the bootloader and never upload a custom recovery.
My model is D6603 with version 6.x of Android OS.
Is the capacity to to unlock the Bootloader bound to the android version?
I heard that I could root the phone if I downgrade to an older OS version and then do it... anybody can confirm?

[Q] Unlocked Bootloader, now what?

Good Evening,
I am following Heisenberg's thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
I am a little confused because I have unlocked the bootloader but now I do not know what I need to do - apparently I need to flash a modified boot.img (which I have never had to do before with my other none Nexus devices), the problem is I am on build number: MDA89D and the modified boot.img is for MDB08K.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Install TWRP recovery.
I have done this but I am now stuck in bootloop.
You have to follow the directions. The two things that cause you to boot loop, guaranteed are:
1. Flashing the boot.img when you aren't on the correct version. Read that section again before you proceed and it will tell you that you need the OTA first or you'll loop
If you're not on the MDB08K build you must update to it first (see section 7 for details on flashing the factory images to update).
2. Not formatting in twrp. Wipe is not format. They work differently and on different parts of the /data partition.
Most of the boot loops you see are because of these two things.
So to fix your issue go to the dowload page for angler and download the correct factory image:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en
Then go back to that post and read everything fully before you start your attempt. Flash that factory image (instructions are at the bottom of that post) and start over. It will work, you just have to do exactly as it reads or you run the risk of boot looping.
Thanks very much @Aridon - I should read properly rather than just rushing in.

Axon 7 A2017U B29 Root, BL unlock, and TWRP

Can someone walk me through how to Unlock the bootloader, root, and install TWRP? I'm so confused. I tried to do the newbie way, even though I'm not a newbie, and I lost my B29 Stock Recovery and can't find the download for it.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
I haven't done it yet but I've done a lot of reading and this seems to me the best guide.
Head over to this link which is the TWRP thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/recovery-official-twrp-zte-axon-7-t3515715
Once you're in there go to bootloader unlock section. Download all the necessary files and on the bottom of the guide there will be instructions link which will take you here https://build.nethunter.com/misc/axon7/INSTRUCTIONS.txt
Follow that and that should do it.
When i get a weekend off ill be using this method to get the Lineage OS 14.1 on my device.
Search, Read & Follow --CAREFULLY--.
It's been a while, but this worked great for me, starting from B29.
Goodluck
Let me tell you, this is the guide that should be pinned. It gives very easy/clear instructions on what you need to do to root/flash recovery and even going back to stock. Very well written and I wish I had seen it sooner. I was going to write a clear guide on this subject only to find.. it already existed.. --nolimit78
@amphi66 I am on 2017U B29 and want to unlock bootloader, install TWRP and root. I also read newbies thread. I am confused about one thing. which TWRP recovery image should I use? a2017u B27 http://d-h.st/kRgq or TWRP recovery 3.0.2-2 : http://d-h.st/dgWW ? There is no file for B29 on newbie's thread and in FAQ, the OP said B27 should work for B29. Which one did you use?
After reading, I also see some people said tenfar's tool is too dangerous and it may brick your phone. Some people also claimed the back up of TWRP recovery 3.0.2 provided on that thread has some bugs may cause you to loose your IMEI number when you do recovering. Do you have any issues? Thanks!

This was back last Nov, but I followed the guide, using the recommended files (was on B29, but used the B27 OK, then reflashed B29 at the end).
The warning involved backing up and then restoring the EFS partiton with tenfar's tool. DON'T! If you stick with system, data, and boot partitions you should be fine.
Good luck. You may want to check with @nolimit78. He has done this much more recently.
Yes, I agree with you @amphi66 that there is a lot of different places to get information about how to root/flash recovery for A2017U B29. Here's what I've done with two different A7's and both have worked each time.
1. Boot the phone to EDL Mode (Both Vol+Power on boot it'll quick flash the red notification light and then act like it's off.. it's not)
2. Use tenfar's tool to flash the recovery. (I renamed the updated TWRP img and named it "recovery". This used tenfar's tool to flash the updated TWRP on your device.
3. Once in TWRP, run the command (reboot disemmcwp and relaunch TWRP) and flash the package to use modifiable bootloader from B20.
4. Once that flashes now you can send the command in Fastboot "fastboot oem unlock" which will unlock the bootloader that doesn't trip anything notifying ZTE
5. At this point you can flash a B29 rom and have a grand ol' time. However, I would recommend using the LineageOS Rom that's available. Trumps everything else out there IMHO.
6. To do that You'll need to flash the Nougat Bootstacks for that rom to boot prior to flashing the Rom itself. I would recommend flashing the nougat bootstacks, reboot to TWRP, flash LineageOS, reboot.
Like I said, I've done with this with two different devices (Thanks ZTE) and both worked out just fine. I did this method with a device with b27 and b29, both ended up updated and flashed with CM/LineageOS with ZERO issues. This post here should also be pinned as the one true guide (THE KING OF THE NORTH) for unlocking/rooting a stock Axon 7. I spent probably about 4-5 hours working, trying to figure out how to get my device unlocked/rooted. However.. at the very end I wrote out instructions trying to help those who would come after me.. I searched the threads to make sure there wasn't already a thread out there.. and then.. it turns out there was.
Someone have the 5 files to unlock the bootloader 2017u on drive

https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...de-root-moto-g4-plus-supersu-android-t3587918 should be a useful guide.
A few notes: you may wish to install a newer TWRP than asked for in the guide. I've used 3.0.3n4 from shreps as a custom recovery on the stock ROM without issue. https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...covery-twrp-3-0-2-r3-moto-g4-g4-plus-t3494337 for the link.
Unlocking your boot loader (and by extension rooting) will void any remaining warranty on your device. Locking your bootloader again will not restore warranty, just bear in mind.
Flash SuperSU v2.79 sr3 beta as directed, any other versions don't appear to work even with the ElementalX kernel.
As zeomal has mentioned, back up and back up your TWRP backups to a safe location. I've tried this procedure on a XT1642 without issue, (if you wish, you can see that here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71817346&postcount=225) and i imagine the xt1643 isn't that different. Good luck
First and foremost - I'm in no way saying that you should ignore the instructions in the guide.
The resources provided by echo92 are very valid and they are great.
With that put out there, I'll tell you what I did.
Unlocked bootloader
Flashed TWRP
Flashed ElementalX kernel
Flashed Magisk.
Phone rooted.
I didn't follow any guide for this. Just look into this link for unlocking the bootloader - https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
Check the second post in this thread for TWRP (I use this personally) - https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...7-1-1-ground-zero-roms-validus-tesla-t3553036
PS - I have the Indian variant.

Rooting the HD1910 McLaren Edition

Greetings All,
My last rooting experience of a phone was with the HTC One M8 and back then I did not have to worry about the whole A/B partition and Magisk was not used as I was very comfortable with TWRP. I finally have a OnePlus phone and I want to get back to root because I really want to get the ElementalX kernel going and explore Magisk. I have found numerous threads on rooting the McLaren Edition but I want to confirm that I am going to be doing it correctly. I have also seen it mentioned that one needs to backup certain partitions that are crucial to the phone working and would like to confirm that I am doing that correctly as well. As mentioned in the header my McLaren Edition is the HD1910 model which is the non 5G variant Build Number OOS 10.0.12.HD01AA. Side note I have a tendency to overthink things and make it unnecessarily complicated...
To Root HD1910:
1: Unlock bootloader: Dev options, Enable OEM Unlock, Advanced Reboot, boot into fastmode, connect USB cable, use adb with fasboot OEM unlock and let reset happen.
2: Follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/7t-pro/how-to/10-0-3-patched-boot-image-oneplus-7t-pro-t3986351? or do I follow one of these steps in this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7t/how-to/guide-how-to-root-oneplus-7t-twrp-t3979307
I am betting on the second link and root guide 3, would that be the best method?
Once thats done then I should have no problem installing ElementalX from EX Kernel Manager and Magisk will be there already. Lastly, what partitions should be backed up and what is the preferred method? I assume adb with the help of this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/7t-pro/how-to/guide-backup-efs-partition-decryptable-t4086625
My apologies for creating another root help thread but there are so many options and different guides thatI don't want to stuff it up and lose important functions or brick the phone.

Once your bootloader is unlocked, but before you do anything else, you should back up your EFS and persist.img just for safe keeping.
Yes you can follow that guide for the EFS backup, but just add
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/persist of=/tmp/persist.img
adb pull /tmp/persist.img
to also grab persist while you're grabbing the efs.
Some things have changed since that root guide was posted, so you might be confused as to what they may be referring to. You can follow this guide as it is up to date.
@Hw4ng3r Perfect! Thank you so much for your post and advice. Followed everything to the tee and I now have Magisk going with the ElementalX kernel .
