They are all fantastic ROMs. Hard to pick a "best". I have been crack flashing last 2 months. I've probably spent the most time on Dirty Unicorns though. My deciding factor lately is whether visual VM works with my carrier, Verizon. There are 2 ROMs, where for me, VVM hasn't been working.

This thread is pretty much counter to what XDA is about. "Best Rom" threads are rarely productive and often causes strife. If you truly want someone else to do the leg work for you then ask specific questions about specific features you are looking for, etc. We all are going to have our own favorite, based on our own criteria. I don't wanna come off like Debbie downer but I know where this usually ends up...

I'd agree. That's why i originally stated they are ALL great ROMs. Very political here sometimes. That being said, I prefer AOSPEx merely because of a very specific feature.
I specifically purchased this device to feed my crack-flashing addiction and I couldn't be more pleased with the amount of dedication every ROM maintainer puts into these packages. If it wasn't for this community I'd be Linux Distro-ing that crap out of my desktop. Regardless, try em all. You'll find your own preferences and styles to suit your needs on your device.
Have fun and thank you to everyone who contributes to this community.

Oxygen ROM on the Nexus-S is AWESOME. It is a pure vanilla stock Android style ROM, no bloatware, no carrier UI, but just the way Google meant Android to be. And it is crazy fast and smooth, with great battery life, can only imagine the Galaxy S2 would be out of this world with this ROM.

Well, look at MIUI-Galnet, they HAD to move away from XDA because of their donation schemes (Something to do with new devices) I think with Oxygen & DevNull it's just an agreement with the CM7 team since Oxygen is the same just a different framework. Not sure really.
But, all in all, I prefer AOSP always have, it's what I miss about my Nexus S & One basicalle

Not entirely true, the reasons Adamg moved away from XDA were the lack of moderation here and the 'dumb' questions being posted here. Those are also the reasons most devs move away here...

i totally agree! but my "problem" is, the SGS2 is just so freakin fast, i never had any speed issues on the stock rom and battery life isnt very different.... i WANT to use oxygen, but with this phone i would just get less features (no ukw-radio e.g.) :-/
(and if i dont want some crap/bloatware, i just remove/freeze it with titanium)
totally different story on other phones, Oxygen on my Desire was a total game-changer, just unbelievable what a difference it was compared to the stock htc rom!

Yes, this is the funny thing that I ended up using a Samsung ROM (Cognition) after trying all the other options simply because it is fast as well, but has all the extra features (most importantly - for me - the wide video format support and the hw accelerated browser). It seems that Samsung is the first manufacturer that finally starts to get the hang of cooking a functional and fast ROM .
I am using this rom and I think it is simple, fast, good on battery life. I will keep it for a while. Thanks to Adam and the poster.

Let me know below what you want to see in this ROM and what you do not want to see

I will be making ROMs for the Nexus S from now on. I value stability, performance, battery life and features.
Features:
- Stable
- Performant
- Battery life equal or better
- Additional features
More information is coming soon. I will try to merge AOSP with the best of CM7 and CM9.
I will remove things that are seldomly used.
Let me know below what you want to see in this ROM and what you do not want to see. This is my first attempt on a AOSP based ROM.
Build a gingerbread ROM, no, it's not hard, google has official instructions here about building from the source code. If you want an ICS ROM it becomes more complicated since there is no AOSP branch for nexus at this time so it involves a lot of backporting and driver patches and stuff like that.

It's a forum rule to not post questions in the dev forum. XDA has gone down hill in the last couple years. People like him and you are why.
This is the guide I followed a couple weeks ago to build 2.3.7 from source for the Nexus S.
AWESOME place to start as it is step by step and actually works.
http://www.tuxtopia.nl/2011/10/20/guide-building-android-2-3-7-on-ubuntu-11-10-64-bit/
You will need the following:
1. A Linux installation (64-bit Is Required) of Ubuntu 11.10.
2. More ram the merrier, faster hard drive the better. I recommend 8GB+.
You can do this in a VM but I would recommend a regular install as it'll be a lot quicker.
You will also have to download the drivers for the phone as well and extract them to the source root so they get included during the build or else your WiFi, Mobile Data, Graphics Hardware etc will not work.
http://code.google.com/android/nexus/drivers.html#crespogwk74
They should make a filter that blocks topics without a [MOD], [ROM], etc tag from being posted

what i want?.. hmm, something different. I think we have pretty much all things that we want in here. ROM development is somewhat stuck (that's why we don't really see ROM development as we first saw), nowadays we see more of new kernel development. In my opinion, AOSP ROM that we have right now pretty much stablest, fastest, most battery efficient. Something like MIUI is great, it has the best user interface but with the drastic performance reduce from AOSP (IMHO : in gaming). CM7, i don't really use it now, i can't write my opinion.
Why don't people start to make a launcher that is different, eye-candy, great usability..

c'mon dude. why the hate. miui is probably the only rom that google considers when they look for inspiration. and that says something. i havent noticed they're looking here. in some parts 4.2 is basically a holo version of miui. i am really, really impressed from what i've seen. it may not be my style (holo fanboy), but they do bring fresh ideas and creativity to the table.

The reason I ask is my wife and some of my customers love their iPhone. Hate the android lock screen and no notifications on lock, the fact that they would have to setup addons to receive notifications on phone, voice, and SMS, etc. After trying to help my wife move over from her iPhone to a new nexus 4, little things like this made her want her iPhone back. I used miui for awhile back on my my touch and it has all of these stock. I think its a great addition to the Eco system and would be an easier move to for iPhone users. Thoughts?

I hope some developer is reading this.
Man I used to love flashing MIUI back in my HTC Thunderbolt days. Brings back a lot of memories. But I found it fun to play with and use as a daily back then. But with advancements of marshmallow and having Theme Engine/Layers, I think MIUI would be a step backwards

Got it all up and flashed and running... Doing really good so far! Battery seems pretty decent (even for the first two hours), and the experience has been really smooth so far. Stoked to let it run for a while and see how it pans out over time. I'm liking it overall, though. Definitely give it a go. Only thing is, it's on the May update instead of June, but that's really no big deal at all.

Is their kernel decent enough or should I just flash Phasma or elementalX?
Flashed, practically 0 personalization, just inmersive mode, battery percent, reorganiable quicksettings and peek for notifications, but seems to be runnig great so far on mako. When they update to June security patch I'll flash it on bullhead.
Btw very interested o battery life, so I'll be keeping an eye on your impressions with that
