Remote control software suggestions - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any suggestions on using remote software? Mine is not rooted. I would like to be able to use some kind of remote in software that gives me full access to shield from computer not on the same network (external). Preferred free method!

why dont you try using J2KIP? its a online system.
or upgrade your DVR unit to one that has its own built in web server. so you can simply forward the ports on your router to what ever u like i.e same ones u setup on the box. the connect to ur ip address + port simples.
I use an old sling box classic, and also can watch freeview and my sky+ via it including full control of sky from the handset

Best mouse / keyboard app?

Anyone use anyone of those apps that let you run a server on your desktop / open up an app on your xoom and control your mouse and keyboard via the touch screen?
if so which is the best one optimized for the xoom? thanks!
PRemoteDroid. The server doesnt need to be installed, just a few files and you run the program. I keep a copy on my phone and Xoom incase I need to use it elsewhere.
If you are referring to accessing your computer remotely via Remote Desktop then I would suggest Remote RDP. It was free and works well on the Xoom. I am out of town quite a bit and access an office computer with it now. My laptop stays at home!!

Torrent app on unrooted shield

Has anyone been able to install a torrent app on a unrooted shield? If so which one because I have not had any luck sideloading any.
I used fluid to get a linux iso to recover my laptop so I could root. That should work fine.
utorrent works just fine!
A downloader. I just use the green "lite" version. http://android-a.com/
Hello there
I living Turkey. I ordered Nvidia Shield TV. I think next week will reach me. Can I install the external harddisk install non -Root the torrent.

I use Ttorrent Pro and it works a charm. If you create a directory /Android/data/hu.tagsoft.ttorrent.lite or /Android/data/hu.tagsoft.ttorrent.pro on the usb hard drive (depending on your app version) you can select this directory as the save path in the app. I think the lite version also works.
hi guys
how to fix 'file too large ( write to disk)' error message in utorrent download?
im running on lolipop rom for my galaxy note.
tTorrent works fine and has remote control support (web and Transdroid).

Anyone try sideloading this on a Sony XBR55X850D tv?
I use Zetatorrent pro on a Nexus Player with an old USB 2.0 hard drive I had lying around(HDDs still hold up best to frequent writing) as adopted storage. I keep the Nexus Player in commission just for that and let the shield go to sleep when I am not using it. Besides that I only use it for storage eating Android games that don't require a lot of processing power. You might need a mouse to deal with some of the settings but any standard USB mouse will do. I use a wireless USB mouse for gaming on my Shield(despite NVidia's best efforts to make PC games controller friendly, some still just work better with a keyboard and mouse). A Bluetooth mouse will probably work too. Otherwise, I was able to control the client with the Nexus remote which is more simplistic than the Shield remote, but I seldom even did that. Just install transdrone on your phone and enable the web interface in zetatorrent. You can now browse and add torrents right from your phone and manage everything in an interface that's very friendly. Want even more? Zetatorrent can automatically copy the files to your NAS after the torrent is completed. I absolutely love that feature for this application

[Q] desktop remote server for Android

Any recommending kind of remote GUI desktop server for Android instead not using CLI (Command Line Interface) using adb shell.
Anyone using the openvpn on Nvidia Shield and Do I need rooted to use openvpn?
I wanted to use torrent client via remote desktop access my Nvidia Shield from my PC Windows 7 while not interrupt my daughter watching the show Netflix on the Nvidia Shield etc.
I would recommend using a seedbox!
Roger that, I noticed Reddit mentioned best way to get seedbox somewhere outside of U.S. Anyways thanks, I guess i'll go get Whitebox or Feral seedbox.
Has anyone set up a VPN application on the Shield? How well does it work? Any recommendations?
TeamViewer doesn't give remote control, just file-level stuff.
I used OpenVPN on my Nvidia Shield Pro, It worked fine as long as the VPN Provider give you the key and config file and however sometime the VPN disconnected then reconnect few times in an hour alone. Not very stable. I gave up because I don't want risk leaking E.g. DNS leak and IP address leak coming from torrent. Like @n1gh7mar3 said seedbox is best and safe. I will just wait whosoever make better ROM or UbuntuOS under MultiROM support for Nvidia Shield that something will provide a very stable and easy use VPN.
Where I live and my ISP spying my traffic. so this is the reason I asked and took @n1gh7mar3 advice.

[Guide] Getting and setting up initial control in RetroArch w/o config file

Until now I ran RetroPie on a Raspberry. Now I got a cheap TV box for basically free and was thinking why do I need 2 "boxes" sitting next to the TV? That is how I came across RetroArch. Installation on the TV box is straight forward - also starting. But that is where the fast track ended as I have a "Generic USB Controller". With a bit of luck and playing with the config file I was kind of able moving through the top menu but did not make it to any submenu. Also any USB/bluetooth keyboard that I have was not successful.
The trick is to know that RetroArch seems to be developed for touch screens. OK, give it a try and touch your TV I now have fingerprints on it but no reaction from RetroArch...
Step 1:
Grab any touch screen sensitive device you can get your hands on, e.g. smartphone, tablet, etc.
Download and install TeamViewer Remote Control
Step 2:
Fire up your Android TV box
Download and install TeamViewer Quick Support
IMPORTANT: Download and install the TeamViewer Quick Support Add-On
Step 3:
Start TeamViewer Quick Support on the TV box
Start TeamViewer Remote Control on your mobile/tablet/... and enter the ID from the quick support from your TV box
Agree to and approve to any questions
I could now control my TV box remotely via my 2nd device, started RetroArch and, in there, was able going through all menus and setup my "Generic USB Controller". After saving the setup/config (remotely), I could navigate through the menus as usual by only using the Generic USB Controller.
Note: This does not solve the problem with the controls in the games - in case you have them!
FAQ
Q: After entering the ID for the remote control I cannot connect to the TV box.
A: Install the Quick Support Add-On - that is needed to make the remote control work (at least it was for my case/setup).
Q: I cannot install the Quick Support Add-On.
A: If installation of the Add-On fails or is not possible directly from the app, either download the Add-On as seperate apk or give it a try via the full TeamViewer app.
Q: My controller is now working in RetroArch's menus but not in the games.
A: This is known challenge with RetroArch. My solution was just to get a foot in the door for controlling the menus in RetroArch in case that your controller/keyboard is not recognized by default.
