I have been trying for a few days now to flash LOS 15.1 on to my 2017U but everytime that I try to flash the bootloader it either give me an "Unknown Command" error right after I flash the bootloader and then reboot TWRP says that I have a password set to decrypt the device. I have been following the guide below.
I have tried the following bootstacks:
- ZTE_A7LOSv1_UniversalBootStack.zip
- A2017x_LineageOS15.1_UniversalBootstack_v2_by_Drak enFX.zip
- A2017UV2.1.0B20v01_Bootstack_by_DrakenFX.zip

I have the US version of the Axon 7. TWRP 3.0.2, with locked bootloader, stock rom, no root.
Ultimately I want to follow this guide by @Oki, to root with safetynet:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-root-xposed-safetynet-stock-rom-t3530906
That guide says I have to have TWRP 3.0.3, so that's what I am trying to install.
I've already installed TWRP 3.0.2, following this guide, up through step A:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-install-twrp-unlock-bl-flash-t3517379
Once that was installed I tried to flash the official TWRP 3.0.3, using both TWRP and axon7tool, and it seems to flash, but recovery boots to a black screen. I'm pretty sure it is in edl mode. Shouldn't I be able to upgrade TWRP this way?
So I gave in and downloaded the gigantic unlock kit, and tried to follow the instructions from @jcadduono, except from TWRP 3.0.2. It fails trying to flash step 1 with an assert that product name isn't P996A0.
Help! What should I do next?

since you're in twrp you can open that step 1 full OTA zip in 7-zip and browse to META-INF/com/google/android and open updater-script file.
you will see a line starting with assert() somewhere, just remove that line and save, then flash it
alternatively you can find a stock P996A01 recovery, flash that, then flash the zips (unmodified) from there
First unlock your bootloader
What I did was this... Already have the old twrp as you do. I got the official twrp for the axon 7 global version (even though my phone is U). I then flashed it through fastboot. I never flash recovery images through twrp. It's never worked for me on many phones. Can't go wrong with fastboot though. Good luck. I recently got my bootloader unlocked and rooted and it was a nightmare digging through these many slightly different tutorials so I know this process is a pain

You need to install again the unofficial TWRP 3.0.2-2.
1. Download it to your computer from http://d-h.st/dgWW (it is signed so it is recognized as a ZTE recovery and bootloader won't reject it) and extract recovery.img from it.
2. Connect your phone to your computer and boot into bootloader. In your computer type the command
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
At this point you will have unofficial bootable TWRP again. However you have to unlock your bootloader by following the DrakenFX's guide here https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/bootloader-unlock-t3437778. You can flash the file in the guide from TWRP too.
Only after the bootloader had been unlocked you will be able to use the official TWRP. The guide to have root+safetynet requires unlocked bootloader. You should have pay attention to the requirements before initiating the steps. However do not worry, your state is easily fixable following the steps.
Thank you everyone. I really appreciate the responses. I had already figured out how to re-install the unofficial twrp, so I just followed @jcadduono's modified instructions and got my bootloader unlocked and the official twrp. I didn't realize the official twrp required the bootloader to be unlocked. I was going to get there eventually anyway, though .
I tried to unlock my phone (A2017G) and flash lineage OS today following Controllerboys guide, but must have done something wrong, I managed to unlock it and flash the bootstack, but I hit an error when trying to flash LOS and so decided to reboot the system and try again, however when rebooting the system I got the error "Your device software can't be checked for corruption, Please lock the bootloader". And I cant seem to access TWRP anymore just the stock recovery.
Is there a way that I can just flash stock OS and be able to use my phone?

That's not an error message, it's the unlocked bootlaoder screen. get used to it, you're gonna see it every time you reboot
You probably didn't flash the Universal Bootloader. You didn't even read. You should install TWRP again with axon7tool, then get there and flash the Universal Bootloader, then the A2017G modem, the the ROM. If that doesn't work just download MiFlash and the latest G package and flash it
So i tried restoring my axon 7 back to stock and did using edl flash tool. However i am unable to lock the bootloader. I always get the same error command (remote, unknown command) and now i decided to stay with lineage 16 and a schwifty kernal i cannot go back as i now cannot install twrp. Same error commands in fastboot.
The phone is currently on a marshmallow build i think b29. Its a 2017u model..
It says secure boot enabled on fastboot. Is this the route of my problems with trying to lock the bootloader and now flashing twrp???
I bought the phone used last year in Toronto with Nfounds twrp already installed so i just moved things along using the twrp img installer and ran lineage 16.0.
Any help appreciated either locking this bootloader or tbh now getting twrp 3.2.3-0 back on it so i can for the time run LOS16 and schwifty.
cheers

If you lock the bootloader while running anything other than stock ROM and recovery you'll brick the phone. Try using a B19 EDL package to return to stock B19, where there's fastboot. Then enter fastboot, and use the command
fastboot oem lock
and it should lock.
I did run the fastboot command and it was always coming up with the remote, unknown command error.
Doesn't matter now as I decided I'll keep the phone so used one of the toolkits to unlock the bootloader and fastbooted twrp 3.2.3-0 to it and reverted back to Los 16.
My issues mainly was when I put it back to stock I still had the device not encrypting screen upon reboot whereby I could choose to not let it boot within 5 seconds and scroll into recovery or bootloader.
Hello, I'm trying to install LineageOS on my Asus Zenfone Max Pro m1 (ZB602KL) but I'm stuck in TWRP and cannot install any OS.
(Sorry I cannot post proper external links as i am new on this forum)
I will try to explain what I did as clearly as possible (I was following the install page X00TD from the LineageOS website) :
1. Unlocking the bootloader
No problem here I guess, I just downloaded the from asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-Max-Pro-M1/HelpDesk_Download/ then
Code:
adb install
it then run the application from the device.
2. Installing a custom recovery using fastboot
This is where is start to be blurry for me. I download the TWRP from the link given by the LineageOS install page (androidfilehost.com/?fid=3700668719832241089) I can
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <recovery_filename>.img
without any problem but when I reboot into recovery I don't get TWRP and when try to
Code:
fastboot boot <recovery_filename>.img
I get something like this :
Code:
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 2.292s]
booting...
FAILED (remote: unknown command)
So I'm trying to get an other version of TWRP from the TWRP website but the Asus Zenfone Max Pro m1 is not listed in the devices section (twrp.me/Devices/Asus/). I finally found this reddit post reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/aiiw3f/flashing_twrp_on_linux_fastboot_doesnt_work/ , download this TWRP androidfilehost.com/?fid=11410963190603879312 and flash it using
Code:
fastboot flash:raw boot <recovery_filename>.img
as recommended on the post and can finaly boot into TWRP.
3. Installing LineageOS from recovery
I "format data" and do an "advanced wipe" as indicated on the LineageOS install page, I get some error messages (encryption, etc.) so I reboot into recovery and try again and it seems to work. I try to sideload the last lineage build downloaded here download.lineageos.org/X00TD but I get this :
Code:
adb: sideload connection failed: closed
adb: trying pre-KitKat sideload method...
adb: pre-KitKat sideload connection failed: closed
so I decided to
Code:
adb push
it and install it via TWRP but I get an
Code:
Updater process ended with ERROR: 7
. I found this reddit post reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/cfwnox/x00td_lineageos_16_firmware_error/. I downloaded the firmware from asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-Max-Pro-M1/HelpDesk_Download/ but I cannot install it from TWRP (error 7 again).
Then I found some link to a "PIE" firmware that I can install from TWRP after installing the "PIE" firmware I can finally install LineageOS but when I reboot I get some warning message saying : "the boot loaded is unlocked and software integrity..." after this I get the LineageOS loading animation (the right to left blue bubble) for 2 minutes then it reboot to TWRP.
Voila.
- I don't really understand the difference between the FIRMWARE (1.5 Gb) or the PIE FIRMWARE (60 Mb) or even the LineageOS file. I'm still trying to adb push some firmware or OS and install them but i'm affraid of making an irreversible mistake and "brick" the phone.
- I don't know if the problem come from my
Code:
fastboot flash:raw boot <recovery_filename>.img
TWRP install or from a bad TWRP file, or from the OS/firmware file.
So what should I do now? How do I clean this mess and install a working OS (LineageOS or even back to Asus/Android factory OS)?
Any help is appreciated, Thank you
uncheck TWRP boxes?
I found this post reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/dtnec5/infinite_loading_screen_after_fresh_installation/
and I simply unchecked the TWRP auto install boxes before reboot... and it seems to work for the moment.
The OS takes 7.8Gb, I don't know if it's a normal size or I messed something.
Flash newer firmware
Hi,
a view month ago i installed lineageos 17.1 and twrp on a new moto g6 plus and all worked fine. The devices is rooted. Then i tried to update the lineage 17.1 (not to LOS 18) and after rebooting the device lineage is still the same build as before but i can't boot twrp anymore. the lineageos recovery is booting. my problem isn't the update my problem it the missing twrp. For the first installation i've
- installed stock rom
- started into bootloader and run 'fastboot boot twrp.zip'
- flash copy-partitions.zip and LineageOS.zip
- restart to recovery -> lineageos recovery is booting -> reboot to bootloader
- rebooting again into bootloader; again 'fastboot boot twrp.zip' and twrp is booting
- there is a message that twrp can format data -> yes
- restart into bootloader -> twrp is starting
- flashing Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt.zip, TWRP-Installer.zip, and Magisk.zip
what of these do i need to run again? I guess its not necessary to flash the stock rom again. is it enough to start twrp with 'fastboot boot twrp.img' and then flash ... what? all? copy-partitions.zip AND Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt.zip AND TWRP-Installer.zip AND Magisk.zip??

LineageOS reflashes their recovery with every OTA update. It is usually grayed out but try disabling this in the updater settings (In Settings, where you look for updates for LOS).
