Root Apps and new OP6T...Set up - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hey guys...Been using my Nexus 6 forever and have had root since it went EOL. I have a new OP6T arriving tomorrow from T-Mobile and I can't remember since it's been so long. When I go to set up the new phone and it starts to download settings and apps from the play store, Since the new phone won't have root will it just omit the root apps automatically or will it try to download them also?
Just want to make sure I don't need to uninstall root apps from my Nexus 6 and let it backup before setting up my new OP6T.
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it will download the root apps too. You can either uninstall once the restore is done or go to the Play Store during restore and stop the root apps from being installed.

Yeah that's what I was thinking...I'll just have to stop the downloads on them. I just want to play around with it before I root...It's so close to stock Android and runs good enough from what I've read that the only reason I would root is for Substatum. So if the dark theme is good enough I may not even need that for now.
Thanks!

Downloading a root app won't root anything anyway. Must be unlocked first and root installed through fastboot

Right...I'm aware of that, Just couldn't remember if the apps would download during setup if there was no root. I'll just have to stop them from downloading manually before they do. No need for them to be on the phone until I decide to root.

If your 6T is from T-Mobile you have a wait to root it, if you want to.
40-50 days plus it needs to be paid off.
Some people have had luck getting the code earlier. YMMV

Yeah I have read that and seen people saying they got away with it as early as the second day of owning it. But I really have no reason to root other than maybe to use substratum at some point in the future or early EOL for updates...But even for either of those I don't think it will be anytime soon.

[Q] i Cannot root again...( since V. 2.3.4)

hi. i updated my phone to 2.3.4 (sys 4.5.91 us) and i cannot get my root back. im pretty new to root but i do not want anything but root. not unlock, not new rom, not anything except root.
i had the latest version of Android and used Gingerbreak and i was extremely happy as it was so easy for me to do. i had root and that's all i wanted. but now... i updated to 2.3.4 and i did not unroot before this (maybe this is my problem) but my phone is fine, everything runs great. but i cannot root it. i used this walk-through http://www.atrixforums.com/forum/motorola-atrix-hacks/4414-how-root-motorola-atrix-all-versions-including-stock-locked-2-3-4-a.html and finished it all. everything went through and i still don't have root.
i have done it 3 times now and successfully competed the steps. i still have no root. can someone direct me or walk me through another way of rooting or by chance giving me advice on what to do so i can get root? im not a scientist and i know it doesn't take one...but all i know is i just cant get my phone rooted and want it rooted badly.
someone please help me. i searched all over the forums and keep finding the steps i followed and then also found unlock steps(something i do not want to do)
all i want is root. please keep that in mind.

I used this method on my OTA gingerbread.
At first, it gave me errors and pretty much wouldn't work past command line, but in reality, Superuser was installed and I was able to launch it.
Do you have Superuser in your app drawer?
yes i do have super user. and i am able to launch it. but it does not unlock anything.
i got no errors. i did everything correctly and still i dont have root access. maybe im missing something?? i try to run Titanium backup and it said no root access. said the same thing with Root explorer.
superuser runs... but it doesnt have anything unlocked. i try to update superuser and it wont let me.

hmm, you can try going to manage apps and clearing superuser's data, and then maybe attempt the process again.
I had to clear data to get superuser to do anything at all when I rooted.
i read that before i attempted it the third time. i cleared data then completed the steps and still... my superuser runs but apparently i do not have root access.
superuser does not ask if i want to allow for root access for any programs like TB or Root Explorer as it should.

Kingroot on top of My KNOX, Working Great! !

I was concerned about Security with Kingroot so decided to try this. I'm on a RETAIL Verizon Note 4 running 4.4.4.
I did a factory restore then after setup, I DISABLED SDM, THEN I installed My KNOX from the Play Store and set it up .
Then I rooted with Kingroot on the "Personal" side.
It worked. Root is, On Demand, temporary, And I think it is safer than using Kingroot without Knox.
I went into recovery to check but no Knox trip. I win!. I have two environments. One rooted the other as secure as you can get.
This is like having a dual boot on the fly. With this root you can at least use Adaway. You can get a lot done with it. This is the best root solution for the Retail Verizon Note 4. I am hoping to get developers interested.
O.K.,This is where I'm at. If someone could look at the pictures and tell me what I should add to the OP description, I'll do it. Look at the last two pictures, Knox would not let me take the screen shots because of security.
Check Out MOST ASKED QUESTIONS and Fixes in the next post.
MOST ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What phone is this for? Retail Verizon Note 4. This may also work on other un-rooted phones
2. What ROM are you on? 4.4.4 found HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...w-to-roll-to-kk-4-4-4-lollipop-5-0-1-t3097054
3. How did you set up your google account? I set my personal side up with a "burner" email and the Knox side with the email I use every day.
4. How do you disable SDM? I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...---------------------------------------------
5.Where do you get My Knox" The Play Store.
6. Where did you get Kingroot? http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
7. What order do you install the software? Restore 4.4.4/Set up Google account./disable SDM/setup My Knox/Kingroot on personal side/=enjoy..... .......Note: this is not for use with SuperSUME.
8. Is root permanent? Some of the modification made when rooted are permanent but this Root is On Demand, temporary And I think this root method is safer than using Kingroot without Knox.
9. What about reboots. If a App ask to reboot first try not rebooting some changes will take effect without a reboot. If you have to reboot use a soft-reboot like SimpleReboot. You will almost always lose root with a hard reboot.
10. For an added security measure I am going to use the "Personal" root side as a playground and reboot before I open the My Knox Security side. Just to throw off any would be hackers.
Fixes
1. I found a fix for AdAway, Inside Kingroot under Root Authorization for AdAway select allow and then on the first run of AdAway when ask if you want to reboot, check: Never / then No = Problem solved .....yes
The same procedure may work for other apps. For some reason Adaway starts working without a reboot. You will need to clear and restart your browser.
Calm down, these things take time. First when you reboot allow your phone to settle down, a minute or two. Don't open anything. FIRST, Open and run kingroot. Once root is established run Adaway like I said. It probably will work the first time but if it fails just try again. It seem that once Kingroot gets to the point where it is not asked for permission, the reboots go away and it becomes more stable.
2. O.K., KNOX disables USB debugging, but I was able to uninstall Knox at the Playstore /Re-enable USB debugging/ then use gatesjunior's debolater app to remove SDM/ then install Knox /then root with Kingroot and it is working great again. I did try to put Super-Sume Pro on top but it would NOT work. I think Super-Sume Pro removes Knox. So I had to start over but I got it working great. If you need to use USB debugging for anything now we have to uninstall Knox. I'm still testing now.

I have two separate Google play store account on two separate partitions .
Can you get it to work with SuperSuMe Pro.
All this time we have been disabling Knox and actually My Knox is your friend.
I purchased Super SU me pro but haven't tried anything yet. Interestingly my company's MobileIron administrator app still takes effect with My Knox so until I see more progress I'm going to avoid moving forward. MobileIron has root detection and when I first set it up using Gate's debloater to disable any system apps caused it to lock me out of my email. Perhaps once we have root perfected I might be able to find a way to bypass all of that...

I think that as long as the Knox's partition is locked nothing can get in are out. I still don't like being dependent on a China App, For over the internet root every time I want root. Our goal of rooting the Retail Note 4 permanently is achievable. I have seen the unlock icon and the Custom on my boot screen at times.

Sometime I see the unlock icon and the word Custom, when I hard reboot manually.
Sometime I see the unlock icon and the word Custom, when the phone reboots unexpectedly, when some app ask for root.
AND Sometime I see the regular screen.
And once I did a hard reboot, it had a normal boot screen and the phone stayed rooted without Kingroot after a Hard Boot.

custom boot screen simply means you attempted or modified something (root) can cause it..
im sure even on a temp root it would show custom for a reboot or two.

They are not random reboots, it happens when a app ask for root. Like when AdAway ask for permission instead of granting permission it just reboots. I retry AdAway again and the next time when it ask for permission it is granted then I have to manually soft reboot. XDA is a lot better without commercials trust me. :silly:

If Phone is Rooted and At A Store You Want to Use Google Pay..

If you have rooted your N6P and you are at a store and want to use Google Pay, is there a way of quickly (on the fly as it were ) unrooting the phone,, making purchase and then rerooting?
Go into SuperSU. Uncheck Enable Superuser. Add your cards. Turn root back on and you're good to go. It appears the only caveat to root is that you're unable to add payment methods. You should be able to pay.

Have you actually tested this at a terminal? Everything I've read says root or custom roms will not work with Android Pay. You can unroot and add the cards, but it will still not function at a POS terminal. I am yet to find someone that can confirm it works the way you mentioned. Everyone agrees that you can add the cards... but that's where the functionality stops.
Tried this method on my Nexus 6. It knows I'm rooted, even if I've disabled SU entirely and rebooted.
Have a search about, at least one of two people have confirmed that they have paid with root disabled, but only if the system partition hasn't been changed
So how do you ensure the system partition is not changed?

Pardon my ignorance here... but doesn't rooting the device modify the system partition? If not... maybe that's the difference with the other threads I've seen. Everyone was using custom roms as far as I know. I'd like to be able to root so I can use adblocker and still use Android Pay. I can live without a custom rom on stock android... but I really miss adblocker.

cool, no worries.
So I can confirm that Android Pay will not let you add cards while rooted, but it will let you complete a payment at a terminal while root in SuperSU is enabled. So once you have your payments setup, you can root and use Android Pay.
I own a store with a terminal that accepts Android Pay and have tested it a few different ways over the past 2 days. Every way worked. Unrooted, root simply disabled, root enabled.
The only thing root does is makes it so you can't add a card.
And I have regular root, not the new systemless root.

Can you still pay after a reboot? Thanks.
It works. I wish the misinformation would simply stop. It has worked on devices in the past, it works on devices now and it will most likely work on devices in the future. We had threads before launch how root would disable bank apps, fingerprint sensor, android pay etc and it is all simply untrue.

Yes, but Google stated that Android Pay can't be used with root. So of course there will some question to it.
source
And root absolutely does effect Android Pay. However if seems only while adding payment methods, and nothing once they are added.
What Google is using to determine if the device has been tampered with: https://koz.io/inside-safetynet/
Its definitely an interesting and pretty secure setup. Since it seems to happen real-time, maybe they turned off the "su_files" check and thats why Android Pay works on rooted devices now.

So tried it again today after rebooting with root enabled and it does not work. So there you go. Android Pay does not work while rooted, period.
It does work with root simply disabled in the SuperSu app and then a reboot.
Maybe the new systemless root, though chainfire said if it does work, it was unintentional and Google will probably patch it.

This is correct. If you try to pay, after adding your cards and re rooting, it will fail.
You must disable root again to pay. You can reenable after.

verizon note 4 5.1.1 root "very unstable"

Last night I was bored and tried kingroot again on 5.1.1. It had been a while since I had tried, and it always said they were looking for a method. This time, it rooted successfully, but made the system very unstable. It caused Lag, and the keyboard stopped functioning, but root checker confirmed root. Temp root of course.

I stopped messing with KingRoot some time ago, just didn't seem worth my time considering you lose root after a reboot. Especially when certain apps require a reboot to take effect, such as Adaway, Xpose, and several others. I'm more-or-less fine without root, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't root my phone if I were to come across a stable and perm root solution.:cyclops::fingers-crossed:

I was on KK, and a friend of mine updated to 5.0.1. I said screw it and fully updated, not caring about root anymore. If this were more stable I would use it more. Temp root is annoying, but it survives hot reboots, which is sufficient for apps most of the time..

I tried to use the hot reboot feature of a rooted reboot app I have on my Tab 3 8.0 after installing something like Xpose, but the root didn't survive. The only real reason I tried to install Xpose was to use the Motorola hotspot app found in it. I'm currently using the paid version of FoxFi and it works great, it's just a four step activation compared to the one touch I got spoiled by on my S4. No biggie.
Over on AT&T note 4 thread someone said that they have temp root for 5.1.1

When I was on 4.4.4, I realized I could use the default file explorer to manage my SD card, meaning copy to, delete from, or anything else I needed to do with it. I'm currently on 5.1.1 now and have been for about a few weeks now. On occasion, when I install a big game, I'll get a prompt asking me if I want to move the app to my SD card, so no need for the SD card fix app. The only thing I don't like about the 5.1.1 update, though, is that the sidebar seems to pop out a bit slower than it did on 4.4.4, but that's to big a thing for me. Since I have the two apps I use the most that can be accessed from the sidebar on my Pie Control app, I can access them much quicker. Keep the dream of root alive, people. It'll come someday, hopefully. If not, at least we have cool phones to play with.

I managed to get a keyboard to open by switching from the stock keyboard to kii keyboard. Have not tried any others. Is there a mod we can do for hotspot with temp root to use the native hotspot app? I'm so tired of using foxfi.
Is there a safe upgrade yet from 5.01 to 5.1.1 Thanks. I need to know in case I need to roll back to 5.01.
Thanks
Wasn't the sole purpose of the BPA1 update to "remove pre-installed Amazon apps"?

Only the appstore and its widget..
Most of bloatware remains like NFL, and even instagram, however after deleted most of it, I don't know which one.. Allow me to use Hotspot without foxfi

I tried it out and it says it root is successful, but on my phone it just locks up after the rooting. I just wanted to uninstall the crap. Bummer.
Ok So Ive been checking the ATT note 4 forum and they have been suggesting that the root exploit may have been found through the Note 4 Stock keyboard. A suggestion also made was before you root change your keyboard to Swype mode then root and it appears to be more stable. Maybe someone could try install a third party keyboard before root and see if it makes a differwnce.

So I downloaded Swype and Nada. Just keeps locking up. Kingroot even updated a few min ago to 4.8.1. I thought yes! But still false hopes. Still locks up for me and can't do a darn thing. Can't wait until my contract is up I am so dumping Samsung and Verizon. I think I am gong back to a flip phone and a laptop. So tired of no root and feel like I got duped into this phone.

First-Time Rooting

-Preface: I have never rooted an Android phone before. I really want to but I have questions/concerns that I want to address before I do so. My daily driver and the phone I want to root is a OnePlus 5 running Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
-I want to root my phone to learn how to root and gain the experience from it (one of the reasons I built my own PC, besides just having an amazing gaming PC), delete all the garbage apps that I can't uninstall or can only disable, I want access to the very useful apps only accessible with root access of a phone, etc.
-Is it safe to root an Android phone?
-How do I root my phone?
-Should I be installing any antivirus/anti-malware software to plug security problems that comes with rooting an Android device? (I currently have Malwarebytes Pro; I was grandfathered in so I don't need to pay for it.)
-Here are some apps that I plan on using with my rooted phone (these either require rooting or significantly benefit from it): Oxygen Updater, Greenify, Sixaxis Controller, SuperSU, Titanium Backup, system app remover, Flashfire, Keepass2 USB Keyboard Plugin, Flashify, Lucky Patcher, Adaway, Game hacker app (Freedom APK?)
-Are there any other apps that you can suggest that I use with a rooted Android phone?
-Will OTA updates still work? I would absolutely hate having to re-root every single time OnePlus releases an update. (I think Oxygen Updater and Flashfire might be able to solve this problem.)
-I'm not sure if all of my concerns/questions that I have are laid out here but I would love all feedback, responses, and additional concerns you may raise with rooting. Thanks so much!
This looks like the page I might be looking for as to how to root the OnePlus 5: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-t3624877. Not sure what any of the terminology means at the moment, but when/if I'm ready to root, this seems like the place to do it.
Ah safe as houses these days xD, just make sure your on the latest OOS firmware and follow that guide you've linked. You learn from your mistakes and just remember you've got a team of people willing to help you out with any issues if you do mess up

Does rooting completely wipe the phone of all its data? If so, how do I ensure it's all backed up in case something goes wrong? All my important things (my files: images, videos, etc.) are uploaded to cloud services (Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive), so I won't lose any of that stuff, but I absolutely (1) cannot brick my phone, and (2) I don't want to have to, in case something goes wrong, reinstall all my apps, sign into them again, change the settings to the way I like, etc.

The root process itself does not wipe anything. But you have to unlock your bootloader first, and this will inevitably wipe everything on your phone including internal storage.
So any apps you have installed so far (and their settings) will be lost unless that app has some export settings feature. Nothing you can do about it now.
All the steps necessary for unlocking and rooting can be found at the link you posted. I followed the same guide and I'm good to go and had no problems.
Rooted or unrooted, an antivirus is optional and it's up to you if you want one. I personally don't use one.

What is SafetyNet? Does it have anything to do with Google Play apps passing some sort of security test in order for them to function/open? How do I not lose access to some apps (like Android Pay is one of them that I have heard) that fail this SafetyNet test?

Yes, that's it. Pokémon GO and Mario Run are other two examples.
You can bypass it with Magisk, but it's never forever as SafetyNet gets updated and then you have to wait for Magisk to get updated. It's a never-ending cat and mouse game.
Ugh, that's an unbelievable pain in the ass... I don't get why people who root their phones have all these extra burdens. I want to root my phone really badly but with all these hurdles I honestly am not sure if it's worth it.
Are there any other apps I haven't mentioned or any other root benefits any of you guys can mention to persuade me in the direction of rooting?

Simply being able to delete applications that I don't want got me into rooting. I cannot persuade, but if the SafetyNet thing is something that is going to hold you back because you use those applications then it's up to you. I know people that have rooted phones and manage with Magisk as a workaround, but yes it's a cat and mouse deal in the end. The ability to flash custom kernels and customize the UI (through substratum or custom ROM) is also a plus! ?
I think you should root only if you have time to learn about android OS, rooting your phone will grants you the full access for everything and you'll have full control in it... Then there are some apps or mods that requires rooted phone (substratum for theming is AMAZING) but here it's up to you... The question is, what you want to do with your phone? If you like/want to have complete control over it and a lot of feature then install a custom rom
God damnit I'd love to root but the more research I do into SafetyNet rooting just seems not even worth it if I have to keep losing access to apps I use...
The reasons I want to root basically boil down to me wanting to trash garbage apps I don't use and can't uninstall and to install cool apps that require root access.
SafetyNet is not important in my opinion.. I've used Android rooted with supersu (no SafetyNet) for years and I've never miss anything..
Is that app list I have above include useful apps, in your opinion? Are any of them redundant? Any other ones I shouldn't miss out on?
A few banking apps use safetynet. If it's vitallyimportant youhave a banking app working, keep in mind you can still access through internet, then this can be a deal breaker...
I think you're going to find most people here are pro root as this is a developers forum - so saying, it opens up a world of ease with which to do things that aren't available to most people and allows you to do things they can't, nerd cool factor high...

In the past I used to always root but to me it's not worth it anymore. To me AP is incredibly convenient. Not willing to play cat and mouse with it. This phone doesn't really have bloat and tethering works flawlessly for
me. Tethering and AP are two of the most important features for me.
