Hi,
My Defy+ (MB526) does not have any sound when playing back audio files (Music) nor the ringing sound can be heard when the phone rings.
I am certain, the "external" speaker is dead. However, where exactly is this external speaker located?
Initially, I thought the ear piece speaker is the same thing, so I purchased a couple of spares, opened the phone and tried to replace it. The internet have lots of instructions on how to replace the "ear piece speaker". Obviously that didn't work, nor can I see anywhere on the electronic board a thing that looks like an external speaker.
Pls help me... It's confusing.
Thanks in advance.....
im on the same problem

Motorola Defy loud speaker
I have busted earpiece speaker and ordered new from ebay.
There are replacement loud speakers too.
Search "motorola defy loud speaker".
It's located in back side housing frame.
Search it too..

Thanks! I see it now.
I managed to separate the board from the rear housing. (I needed to remove the sim and the SD card and it was easier to separate it, not sure if that was indeed true)
Once I can see the speaker part (looks different and also larger than ear piece), I finally knew which part to purchase from eBay.
Thanks again!
My microphone on my S5 is not working. When I make a call I can hear the person but they can not hear me I also tried recording my voice and it didn't work, so clearly I am assuming the microphone is broken. What part do I specifically need in order to replace the microphone and have it working?
Sounds like you didn't do a search and read the existing threads on this subject. Your assumption that the mic isn't working may not be correct. You should at least try turning off the noise cancelling settings first, speaking closer to the mic, et cetera. There is also a service menu setting for microphone gain. Failing all of those items, then a warranty claim or buying the part yourself, if out of warranty.
All of these are elaborated in more detail in existing threads.

I have tried everything you have said before. If I could possibly know what specific part that is faulty so I can replace it because the warranty is expired

It would have been helpful if you had bothered to tell us up front that you had done so.
The primary microphone is part of the charging port assembly.

Ok so replacing that part should fix the problem?
I was having mic problems. Remembered a friend having issues on his S3, he used a needle to clean rubbish out of the hole on bottom of the phone. So i did the same, very thin needle only pushed in a small amount, pulled a load of fluff out. Problem solved. Two mics on s5, bottom is for using phone normally, top is for when you use in speaker mode.
Might be worth a try.

Is your phone rooted?
If yes than are you using custom kernel?
If Yes than which kernel?
Sometimes it is due to kernel.
Such problems are more s 5 s
This is probably due to the waterproof cover
I have a rooted stock G 900 a mic doesn't work but speaker does. left touch button doesn't work or light up. the device is still under warranty so we sent it back to Samsung and they wanted almost $200 to fix it whereas I am going to pay $10 for that whole board and microphone I'm fix it myself I am hoping that this will fix the problems. I am 99% sure it is because of some water damage. just a small amount of water I believe got in the charger port. check out what. I will update on this too with results. maybe a video. I have replaced glass and motherboards on many s5 but this is a really advanced repair

Seems like my S5 is doing the same thing. It started doing this just in the last few weeks, and I haven't figured out how to address the problem.
I am having the same issue as navpal above
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this frustrating problem?
I also would appreciate if solution were posted. HEre are things I have tried with no success.
I cannot even slightly be heard on other line, except when in speakerphone mode. I can hear myself on my side, so I know that the sound is being recorded by at least one microphone.
tried:
clearing system cache
factory reset
clearing out microphone with pin
Hi there.
I have (not mine) Samsung S5 in my hands
Have tried:
Safe mode
battery out of the device and back on method
cannot do factory reset - still don`t want to disturb the client about that
Can you give me picture only of the MIC,not the whole board and others?
Maybe i can try clean it.
If i try to replace the old one will that be enough for me - i attach one photo ?
How is that done at all?
Thanks in advance
Hey Guys,
Im having the same issue. My phone went underwater without the USB flap cover and now the microphone does not work.
Should I replace all USB board? or replacing only the microphone piece would solve the problem?
Also, I wasn`t able to find more threats about it, if you guys have it, please help posting here the link.
Thx
You're about a smartass aren't you
This is an old thread, but I wanted to share my solution to this. My mic audio was very weak in speakerphone mode on Galaxy S5, but was OK in normal phone mode. The S5 has 2 microphones: bottom one is for normal mode, only top one is used in speakerphone mode. On mine the top mic hole was internally plugged with some debris. After cleaning it out by carefully inserting a broken-in-half toothpick (the blunt end) and twirling it while holding phone upside down to allow dirt to fall out, my speakerphone mic audio problem has been solved. If your mic audio is OK in speakerphone but weak in normal mode, it could be the mic hole along the bottom edge that needs cleaning. Using Voice Recorder in INTERVIEWEE mode will test only the upper microphone. Other modes of Voice Recorder enable both microphones so would be less conclusive. Cleanining out the mic holes completely solved my problem, while software fixes such as unchecking noise cancellation did not make any significant difference. Hope this is helpful.

My friend you saved me.!!!! i have tried a lot of things but the cover was the problem. Without it the mic in speakermode works great now.... I think even Samsung cannot explain this.!!!
Hello guys! My loudspeaker suddenly stopped working few weeks ago. I know the cause, and I am pretty sure it is hardware related.
Here is the story:
I installed this ROM (don't think it's important). It worked fine for about a month. The sound volume was lower than MoKee or MIUI, so I started searching for some solution.
I followed a guide similar to this to boost volume, and it worked!
Although I read in the post to not set the value over 95 (to avoid damaging speakers), I decided anyway to set it to 100, because I didn't think that could happen. Sound was very loud, and I was very happy.
Next morning, alarm screamed very strong, but suddenly stopped ringing. I realized my mistake, loudspeaker is completely mute since then.
Earpiece, headphones, microphones work, everything works except loudspeaker.
I hoped so much that was software. I formatted and installed some other ROMs (MoKee, MIUI, CM12) but still no sound. Then I restored a previous MoKee backup (taken when sound worked) but no success. Unfortunately it's a hardware thing.
I bought a new loudspeaker, learnt from YouTube how to open the Note, and replaced it. Still no sound.
Then I tested both loudspeakers (the original and the one I bought) and they both emit sound when attached to an external source (jack plugged to mp3 player). So the problem is not in the loudspeaker itself!
My knowledge ends here.
How can sound stop working by simply raising a software value? But above all, how can the loudspeaker work correctly, but not when placed into the phone? Is there another component that can be damaged in abovementioned way? If so, can that component be replaced?
I hope somebody could share some knowledge to help me solve the problem, or at least point to the right direction. Thanks in advance.
Open your Phone and look if something "looks" broken and make a picture for analysing. It can be not anything but more that just one piece that's broken.
(Sry for bad English, I'm from Germany)

I opened it many times today, but discovered nothing wrong or weird, although I'm not an expert so maybe I simply haven't noticed.
Will post picture as soon as I manage to take photo without phone
Yeah, its like taking a selfie with your phone on your phone without mirrors, only Chuck Norris can do that
(sry for bad English, I'm from Germany)
Some photos
I resurrected my old phone and took some photos. As I said, there's apparently nothing weird, nothing that appears burned or cut.
Here three photos (full phone, upper part, lower part) the loudspeaker contacts are highlighted.
I don't expect a hint on how to fix that (although I hope so much ) because I know this forum is meant for developers/modders/those working with software. My real question is:
Why after just altering value in mixer_paths.xml my phone is now mute? Can someone describe how the sound goes from the CPU to the loudspeaker? Is there something I can do?

I did the exact same thing. I replaced the loudspeaker just like you. My sound still doesn't work. I have done a complete factory reset and tried new roms and nothing works.

Hi Guys
I have exactly the same problem with my Xiaomi Mi3. After display replacement lound speaker stopped working. While I had broken display (just the touch screen, dispay was fine) loudspeaker worked fine (I cannot switch off alarm, even shut down the phone)
I bought new speaker, but sound still doesn't work. Do you think that it is comming from CPU? It is possible but I don't think so, because everything works fine via earphones or bluetooth speaker.
Did you find any solution?

I tried many other ways, none of them worked. I ended up buying a small BT speaker and carrying always with me.
In my case I learned in the worst way that excessive software amplification can burn audio chip. I replaced EVERY replaceable part (speaker, USB/speaker lower board, main ribbon cable, maybe others I don't remember) with no success.
@tripper22 I think you have no options. If you did my same steps, sadly your sound is lost. I have not yet replaced my phone only because there was a recent increase in development, and many custom ROMs to flash, but I will probably change that phone sooner or later.
@nokovica My sound from earphones or bluetooth is working too. I remembre reading that the audio amplifier is in a separate chip.
Anyway, your problem looks like a HARDWARE issue, since you didn't played with system configuiration. This is easier to fix (if it's fixable, of course).
If you did the replacement, you could check twice if some ribbon cable went damaged. You could try turning on your phone while open (remove back panel and expose board and cables) and see if works this way. You could check with a multimeter wether some signal (albeit small) come to the buzzer. In my case I discovered that a little signal (2-5 mV peak) reached the buzzer, but wasn't enough to make a sound. Rechecking after some months revealed that even that little signal is now gone (maybe sound chip damaged further).
If someone else did the replacement (hopefully Xiaomi assistance) it's their fault, and you can usually ask for repair for free.
Mi3 Loud Speaker Problem
@nokovica
Even I am facing the same problem with my Mi3 . After screen replacement ( touch + digitizer ) My loud speaker is not working , however phone speakar and mic is working perfectly fine , even the headphones too. I also detected one of the problem with Network Signals , if last for only few seconds and then it goes off , i tried placing many sims, but no luck . Can any one in the forum provide some solution to the Network Signals ?
even I have the same problem with my redmi note 3. I just opened back case, sub-board loudspeaker and re-assembled it. I didn't touch motherboard or any flex on upper side. Loudspeaker stopped working since then. Swapped with new part but it still doesn't work. Headphones and ear piece works fine. doesn't play music on bluetooth but hands-free works on bluetooth. how could have damaged audio chip on motherboard?? I barely touch it. didn't even unscrew it.

i read somewhere thet it resolved with warming sound IC in mainboard.
have any body solution or explane to problem?
I don't know why so sudden my V20 got problem with it's mic.. There is even a bigger problem which is I don't even know what to be replaced now..
There is 2 situation here :
1 - When in call, with normal mode..everything is working fine but whenever i'm trying to put my phone to loudspeaker mode.. The people whose in call with me is claiming that there is a dead silence when i'm in loudspeaker mode..
Same goes when i'm in Whatsapp Videocall as example, i can hear them but they can't even hear me..
2 - When i'm doing recording with HD Voice Recorder app, the left channel won't even got anything recorded.. Only the right channel does the job..
Same goes with video recording, only right channel does the job while the left channel sound records nothing..
I'll be informed that V20 have 3 mic and it is obviously one at top and one at the bottom while another one is inside the phone nearby the earpiece if i'm not mistaken.. so now, i'll need help.. Which mic should i'll replace to get everything working again?
I'll believe my top mic is broken but which one? The one at the left before the earpiece or at the right next to earpiece? HELPPpPpppPpppPp
nevermind, got mine fixed.. just replace the new mic at the top and now i have back my fully functional V20 again..
i'll never know that phone is using a different mic for normal call mode and loudspeaker call mode.. Now i'm feeling like an idiot because everytime i'll do loudspeaker, i do scream at the bottom mic while it is using top mic ATM.. gosh
I just got mine and no one could hear me, i pushed a thumb tack in the bottom mic hole because it looked like a little plug or plastic was blocking it and and now it works fine, mine was a refurb phone
Bottom mic
My phone mics worked in speaker phone calls but not talking through the regular in-call mic. I had a repair man change the bottom mic today. He had to install 4 mics to get it and the one that worked was out if a Samsung phone! Cost me USD$60. Apparently my phone had water damage before I bought it used. That's annoying but I'm back in business!
I am in the same exact situation. Replaced the main loudspeaker, top two earpiece speakers and still my voice won't come through on the other end of a normal headset mode call. Only can speak through loudspeaker. What part must I replace? I'm thinking normal headset mode sound is received through the pinhole area next to the 3.5mm jack. What part do I replace?! It's getting personal now. I will fix this phone!!
Not counting the two earpiece speakers up top on the mainboard, and the large loudspeaker on the bottom what other speakers are there for me to replace?
Hi. I have v20 and my speaker fidnt work.i can hear some noise once in awhile.i open the device and reconnect the speaker.then comnect.and agold piece accidentally broken.my question is if i replace anew microphone it should work?
I don't know it might be the motherboard contacts and not the speaker. Actually I had mine open recently and I slightly broke one of the contacts but not completely so it still works.
The pic you posted does't show the speaker contact pins .That one you see there is for something else, a ground pin or something.
Sure, if the contacts on the mobo are still high enough a speaker replacement would solve the issue. If the speaker is the problem of course - it may be the contacts are not touching the speaker properly.
I would test the speaker before buying a new one with an old earphone cable if you have one. You'd just strip the ends and place them on the speaker contacts while plugged into an audio player and see if you hear anything. Oh btw, strip off the felt grille off the speaker, it sounds way better that way.

My speaker also stopped working a few months ago. I bought a new speaker but it still doesn't work so I summer that something on the motherboard is fried. It may also have been caused by the resurrection I had to pull off using QFIL around the same time. Maybe something firmware-related.
I replace the speaker, but it still doesnt work. I guess because of the gold ribon that broke..is there any way to fix it??
Anyone??
loudspeaker not working - incoming calls not ringing
Did you solve the issue ???
I apparently have the same issue with my chinese refurbished v20
The strange thing is the audio jack for my earphones was not working (but I didn't really care because I don't need it) and now it's working ! ...
