How to recover photos after formatted SD as internal storage? - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Hello, i own Xiaomi Mi A1 with rooted Android 8.1.0 and i got 32GB Samsung SD Card.
I was using it as internal storage, i wanted to get rid of it to make space for another SIM.
I made sure that there are no apps - Moved everything to internal space.
I checked usage of SD card and there were only system and apps, a said fine, i am ok with deleting and reisntall some apps.
So i formatted the SD card ("Use as external storage")
And then i noticed all my pictures are gone. If i am right, when you use SD card as internal storage, device encrypts the card, then it was formatted.
I immediately took card out of phone. I am still own this device, so is there any way to recover encryption key or something?
Now i am tryin recover files with app PhotoRec, but it doesn't seems to get any files.
Any idea how to get photos back? I don't have updated backup of Google Photos.

Sorry but you have no hope, did they not backup to google photos or did you not have that turned on.

So there is no way to recover content of card and then decrypte?
I did not turn that on intentionally, i thought i am smart enough not to do such a stupid stepwithout backup, lol.

EDL Mode
I had the same problem. I only managed to solve via EDL Mode. On youtube there are several videos teaching how to do it.

What happens when you insert an SD card?

I have realized that the note II internal storage is not treated as an external card and hence gets wiped if flashing certain roms or choosing to factory reset. So, the following barrage of questions relates to "what-if" scenarios when plugging in an SD card into the Note 2.
If I choose to insert an SD card, would the phone automatically start saving content there instead or would I have to tell it to do that? What about all the folders that the phone already created like S Note Export, paper artist and photos from the camera - would they get migrated automatically or would I have to move them manually? Would subsequent photos and files be saved to the SD?
Finally, what about app storage? S Note saves notes to the internal drive but would it save it to the external storage instead if I insert an SD card? How about Spotify with its offline tracks? Would those tracks be stored on the SD rather than the internal storage if a card is detected?
Okay, one more to really complicate things: What if I insert an SD card, do a titanium backup of several applications with their corresponding data on internal storage, save those backups on the SD card, factory reset/format the phone, and then restore the backups from the SD card? Would the associated data go on the SD card or internal storage?

When you insert an sd card the camera app asks if you want to start saving photos there.
Downloads automatically go to external.
But aside from that I havent noticed any other moving. Screenshots still all go to internal as does s note and most other apps.
Still looking for a way to make them shift.
Anything already on internal storage had to be moved manually. Took a whike too lol.
Sorry but mot sure about your other questions. Hopefully someone else can answer

Anyone have issues with using a SD card as intenral storage?

I have a 64GB SD card that I want to use as internal storage. Save my photos, videos, apps, and music downloaded via Google Music. However, even though I formatted it via the Storage and USB menu, it remains unused. I also cannot migrate any of my dozens of apps. Am I doing something wrong here...?
You can at least recognize it and put files into it? At least for me, the apps that could be migrated went automatically (the phone asked if I wanted to move the apps and it moved those he could). When I put in my pc, it only recognize the SD card, the internal storage is not accessible for me.
Are you facing any errors?
Did u install the newest twrp (3.0.0)? It fixes the issues with adaptable storage

If you formatted it for portable storage instead of formatting for internal then that will be your problem

SD Card Mounts, not available in apps

I recently rooted my S7e, and did a factory reset. I tried to restore app data via Helium from an SD Card backup, but the external card is not showing as an option, even though in Settings> Storage, it shows my SD Card mounted and with correct size.
I've also tried music, root explorer, etc and they are not showing the card.
Finally, I took another SD Card from my tablet and it does the same thing--shows in storage settings, but no app will show it.
Any thoughts? Is there a build.prop edit that I can try?
EDIT: Forgot to mention that when I plug my phone into a PC, it shows both the internal and external storage partitions without issue.

No Access to SD Card Please Help

16gb isnt enough, bought a 64gb sandisk sd card but after inserting it in and setting up as portable storage, my phone cant write files to it??? I have to use a special browser with root access just to delete some pics. On my old phones it had a directory name like "sdcard1" but on this it has "9DAE-180F". Its recognizing it like a otg usb drive. Which i think is my mistake cuz i chose "setup as portable storage"
Now i have a lot of data on my sd card which would be a pain in the ass to backup and then retry formatting as internal storage. So what i wanna know is will it have proper sd card access for all normal apps and behave like a normal sd card like all other phones i ever used? Or am i just gonna waste time trying out all this.and formatting wouldnt work?

I believe in MM and above we have to explicitly allow apps to access the external storage. check your gallery/photo app permissions and see if access to 'storage' is enabled
Update: i backed up all the data and when i formatted the card as an internal storage it extends the internal storage. Which solved the issue . But when i remove the sd card and connect it seperately some files show up and some dont. U dont know if the files is weather stored in internal or external storage which i dont care about anyways cuz im never getting the sd card out of the phone again. Lovin it

android will encrypt the sd card if you set it as internal storage and you won't be able to access the content outside the phone, so if your phone goes crazy or bricked, there's high chance that you'll lose your files forever

Issue With K4 Note coz of SD Card Configured as Internal Storage

@Strephon Alkhalikoi @Chainfire
Hello Friends..
i own a Lenovo K4 Note 16 Gb.. due to short storage i Formatted my 64 Gb Stornium Card as Intrenal Storage few days ago. Fast Forward till today, My phone suddenly crashed today. it Restarts.. As it starts back, a notification displays saying "SD CARD MISSING - Reinsert this device" .. i removed the SD Card & reinsert it, but It taking quite long time to restart & not showing any Storage Capacity of SD Card.. In Storage&USB section(in Phone) it says "Checking"..
My Concerned issues are 2 here..
1. Full Recovery of Data from Encrypted SD Card(Adopted SD Card)..
2. Backup of WhatsApp, Contact, SMS, Backup, as while backing up Via (already installed) backup taking apps, it says "No Internal Storage Found" as it is considering SD Card the main Storage.
NOTE:= i m Recieving WhatsApp messages (Cant Download Media) , Can Create & Delate Contacts, but cant take backup.. So i thought that there shld be a way to get my precious BackUps & Data..
Please Guide. Awaiting for your kind Response..
Thanks Rajat
@glassyrajat: I saw this rather late, so I apologize. I don't really get notifications of people mentioning me by name.
You used the adoptive storage feature of Android to combine your internal storage and MicroSD card into one, somewhat like using a striped RAID array in a PC. When you do that, you cannot remove the MicroSD card or else you get errors. The message you are seeing regarding "checking" is because Android has to verify that the MicroSD card you inserted is the one that you made part of the storage. If the card isn't the same or is corrupted, Android will tell you to replace the card.
The best solution I have for you is to be patient. Android has to complete that check, but once it does and assuming no damage to the MicroSD card you should be able to see all your files. If for some reason you cannot, your only option is to format the MicroSD and lose everything on it. This drawback to adoptable storage is why I don't use it or recommend it.
