Specifically.
I had the same issue today. Booted into safe mode, then I was able to encrypt.
Press power button to get power off popup menu. Press and hold power off. You will get another popup offering to reboot in safe mode.
Safe mode worked. This uncomplicates my process of rooting, unrooting, encrypting, and having issues rerooting after encryption. This is also a crazy easy single step process for an issue that has given me months of headaches.
You shall be the first person ever that I have given gold to.

How would encryption effect flashing a new rom?
What are your guys thoughts on encryptimg a unlocked and rooted phone?
I do not want to enable it yet till it is comfirmed its ok.

Um I haven't had a problem and I've encrypted the software many times as I have installed many rooms and I always encrypt after setting everything up post root so it should just work without issue. Maybe they just weren't being patient and it can take a bit of time

What about unencrypting? To say to flash a new kernel or rom?
Well that's an interesting question. I am testing twrp builds from hashbang to try and get encryption fully supported for this device in twrp. Until that time you can actually still flash zips via adb sideload no problem

I've got twrp installed.
To get to recovrry mode, do I go into recovery mode in twrp and then the recovery button in twrp to install packages m zips from adb?
to install packages via adb is pretty simple really you just open twrp go to advanced menu and open "adb sideload" from there. Then connect your device to your computer install adb and sideload an app with this syntax
"adb sideload ***.zip"
That is radical. Ty for this.
Encryption went like a breeze.
took no more than 20 min. I feel safe now.

Just found out after encrypting twrp fails to mount data to backup. I might restore without encryption. That way I have access to backups on my phone too.
So I am having a problem restoring a backup. Since I cannot decrypt, to get rid of data from being locked down, do I flash with a rom? I am stuck.
Ok I have to do a factory reset. But not sure if this exists and works through twrp. Or if I have to do a factory reset some otherway.
Ok I skipped trying to reinstall rom and did a little searching.
This guy but with a 6P had exact issue.

That will erase all your data including files, apps, etc. Anything installed to /system should be untouched.

Thanks for confirming this. Exactly what I need when time comes to decrypt "wipe" I will use this.
I wasn't sure if it would delete the partition or wipe, this is why I asked.

Upon reading this again, just to be safe, you might want to start with just a fastboot erase. I think format does the same thing, but I have never used it.
Since you would be specifying the partition with both commands, I do not think you are in risk of completely blowing up your user partition if you choose to use fastboot format, but once again, I have always just used fastboot erase.

So I went to use this. I got an error.

So now, that I am guessing, since twrp can now decrypt, I should just be able to go into twrp and do a full wipe and reinstall of the trupurexmm 2.5 And encryption should be gone?

Nope. Encryption is still enabled. I flashed trupurexmm 2.5 following
5. How To Install A ROM with TWRP Recovery
Prerequisites: unlocked bootloader, TWRP recovery.
Installing a ROM is a pretty straight forward and easy process. Before you install anything you should make a nandroid backup (instructions above).
Download a ROM and appropriate Gapps package and place on your device.
Boot into your custom recovery.
Perform a full wipe.
Select the wipe option from the TWRP home screen.
Select advanced wipe.
Check the system, data, cache, and dalvik cache options.
Swipe to wipe.
Install the ROM.
Select the install option from the TWRP home screen.
Navigate to where you have the ROM zip stored on your sd card and select it.
Swipe to install.
Most ROMs will run an installer script at this point but some ROMs have what is called an Aroma Installer which allow you to choose some install options before the script runs.
You will also need to install the appropriate gapps package directly after installing the ROM.
Once you've installed all necessary zips you'll have an option to wipe cache/dalvik and an option to reboot system. Wipe the cache/dalvik, hit the back button, and hit the reboot system button.

I'm having an issue encrypting. Encryption will not start on my rooted moto x. I factory reset and encrypted, but could not get root working. Flashed everything via adb sideload in twrp but root refueses to work. Any ideas

on my A2017U After unlocking the bootloader and having twrp 3.0.4 installed I went to install resurrection remix and gapps and upon boot it asks for a password that I had never set up. before installing the ROM i formatted the data and wiped everything. What do I need to do? I reloaded a stock rom and in the settings it says the phone is encrypted. I've tried searching for answers to this but I haven't been able to find anything..

I flashed it again, formatting data before flashing everything, still came up with the dialog to inter password. I rebooted into twrp and formatted data again, reboot, still asks for password

updating TWRP to latest build and I still have the same issue
If you Install another ROM, after wiping everything, is this problem still there?

Are you sure you are ACTUALLY USING the 'Format data' button? Wiping won't do anything to the encryption (i'm asking just to be sure).
Otherwise try doing this:
-Format data, wipe system, dalvik, cache
-Flash Universal Bstck
-Flash your modem
-Flash the ROM
-Flash either noverity-opt-encrypt-axon7 (I think the name was that one; just make sure it is for the axon7 or ailsa_ii), or SuperSU/Magisk which should have that packaged in.
This really shouldn't happen...

yes, I am actually using format data button and typing yes. I will try using the noverity later this evening and give you a followup
If I remember this right you have to use both in twrp,
factory reset and format data, I read this here on XDA or Reddit before I unlocked my bootloader.

this is what I did.
1. Boot to TWRP
2. wipe/factory reset
3. advanced wipe everything but sd card and usb
4. format data, type yes
5. install ROM and Gapps
6. boot.
everything loads okay except I get it asking for password
I have not tried another ROM yet or the noverity-opt-encrypt-axon7 I will have to do those later tonight.
One more thing I was going to try is remove the lockscreen pin/fingerprint on the stock before doing anything

Do this after you flashed rom and gapps, only factory reset and format data, no need to wipe other stuff.
Edit: I did this directly after the unlock, I flashed the latest official twrp through the unlock twrp version, rebooted to twrp, advanced wiped caches and data, not system, flashed bootloader and modem from the Los thread for my axon version, flashed dark rom with gapps, rebooted and run into the same issue as you. Back to twrp, factory reset, format data, then reboot and everything was good ....., Or Format data and then factory reset, try both if necessary.

Another thing you could try is booting to the bootloader and trying "fastboot format userdata"

You just need to wipe data cache dalvic after flashing the ROM
You have the factory reset step in the wrong place. Do it after the rom and gapps installation...
Essentially the phone is still encrypted though factory reset . You need to get rid of the encryption AFTER you flash the new ROM...
Change the data file system to ext4.

This did the trick.
Flashed bootloader, modem, rom, gapps. factory reset and format data. boot to password, reboot to twrp, factory reset, format data, reboot to working rom no password. Thank you and to everyone else for your help!

This seemed to do the trick for me.
To change the file system type in TWRP 3.2.3.0:
Go to 'wipe', then 'advanced wipe' and select 'Data', press 'Repair or Change File System' and then 'Change File System' to EXT4. It will say "format" which often means "delete" but didn't remove the ROM I had flashed moments before.
I also did this below first- but without doing a re-flash of the bootloader and modem:

Idk if this will help with your use case, but for other users, it can be good to know.
but for the stock ROM: Settings -> Security -> Screen Lock -> Enter your pin -> It should ask you if you want to shut off the password on boot up
Hi, ive been wondering why all those roms folks put out are unable to encrypt the /data partition.
Any rom i tried so far is soft rebooting after i invoked the encryption option. No encyption happening at all.
And if i do it manually via adb shell > su # vdc cryptfs enablecrypto wipe password somethingpw
I sort of soft brick the device boot until i whipe the data partion via twrp.
Thereof i am wondering why its broken in the first place and if theres a chance if folk will fix this over time or any 3rd Party Roms will be stuck w/o a chance to encrypt personal data.

I was facing issues with my LOS 15.1, afaik unencrypted. Then I flash stock Oreo Feb using Mi Flash tool, with option 'clean all and lock'. Then I root it with magisk and flash LOS 15.1. The next thing I know, my phone is encrypted

Thank You, for confirming that Encryption works, i was almost at the verge of returning the phone.
Got it to work now.
....
The tldr of all i tested and messed around with is:
If you whipe Data trough twrp, with the special dialog where you have to type in YES. which folk reccomend to use to remove encryption,
will mean you brick the encryption and requires a re-flashing of the stock rom.
Secondly if you only go into advanced whipe, Art, System and data and then install a rom, it should say 'decrypted with default password'
Which is a dead give away that encryption might going to work just fine, rebooted into bootloader w/o into system, installed gapps pico, (eeh) and magisk, which also mentioned something about encryption as the log ran trough. Then rebooted into system, and now it says encrypted. And i can set up a boot pin/password before it fully boots. GREAT!
Soo.... If it says decrypted and won't encrypt, you have to flash stock, check its encrypted. Then install costum rom without removing encryption.
Once you removed it, its back to stock rom for new a /data setup/encryption.

I have tried to root multiple times but everytime I flash TWRP and format Data and then restart the data partition keeps getting encrypted again, I am using the official 8.0 Oreo UK version which recently got released, I have tried installing Magisk and Xposed both are installed successfully but with error that /data is not mounted and like I said if I format data to decrypt it and then restart it automatically encrypts it. I also tried flashing Samsung anti root and no opt zips but it also didn't help.
It was released a few days ago, just go with custom or wait for working solution
1 workaround for now :
flash rom via odin /
flash twrp via odin /
flash no_encrypt 6.0, full wipe, reboot to recovery /
flash MoroKernel 1.5 (magisk already included) /
reboot and have fun with no encryptation anymore
No-verity didn't work for me but remove encryption.zip did.
this didn't work for me, it resulted in a bootloop

Sorry for you. check Mount system or data or enable MTP. Internal storage was probably still at 0

I've followed the steps you've described. (in step 3, I also did format the DATA partition because it was encrypted)
The result is that I'm on stock OREO and I can boot in TWRP.
But whatever I try, after booting OREO the first time, my DATA partition is encrypted again.
So, I have a TWRP as recovery, but only in READ ONLY mode, because it cannot mount an encrypted DATA partition.
This way, I cannot backup or restore my DATA partition.
Can you confirm that your TWRP is not READ ONLY?
And what encryption disabler did you use? (I used no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip)

Yes, I can confirm that I can do whatever I want on TWRP.
I used a .zip found somewhere on a 8.0 thread. I feel like the no-verity zip doesn't work on some devices as it didn't on mine.

Magisk removes the encryption disabler .zip for some reason.
Sounds good dosen´t work.
When you flash Magisk it flashes its own boot or system img and remove encrypt flashes its own, if you flash the magisk itll flash the img but if you then flash encryption disabler it will overwrite the magisk img and magisk will uninstall or if you flash the encrypt and then magisk then you will have magisk but encryption will be enabled.

When this happend to me, i hit format data and typed yes, when i mount on TWRP i can see my storage again
I can root with patched boot image, but Samsung Healt and Samsung Pay don't works. Anyone?

Samsung Pay will, at the moment, probably never work again because it trips Knox.
For Samsung Health the fix is still the same: install a build.prop editor and change the value of RO.Config.Tima from 1 to 0.

doesn't work for me
Apparently there are 2 kind of users here.
One part did manage to install stock Oreo (BTU? other CSC?) , with root (magisk? superSu?) and a working TWRP (3.2.1?) which is not read-only on our beloved S7 Edge (SM-G935F)
The other part did not manage to setup this particular config.
It would be nice to have a detailed step-by-step guide from scratch by someone who managed to do it, so we can reproduce it.
Ok have a ZTE Axon 7 can't flash any thing because of it instantly encryption and I get recovery and then game over any one have a Cure for this......... thanks in advance.

Tried that and it didn't work.....it doesn't matter what I flash stock ROMs tell me my password is correct but memory is corrupt and need to be wiped and when I flash a custom ROM it doesn't boot just two flashes of the led and that's it.
Which TWRP recovery are you on?
What I mean by Factory reset is a full Factory wipe your whole internal is erased. It is like a clean slate new phone.
You should have all the necessary files for your flash on your sd card there is an option to select storage to flash from there.
So when I first swapped from Stock Nougat to AEX I was encrypted on 5/4 ROM my internal was locked by encryption and could only dirty flash roms. it was annoying so I factory wiped and flashed latest AEX from there and didn't set up security right away so no encryption.
I realised my TIBU back ups were all on internal so had to basically start from scratch oops lol.
It is a little outdated now with the official Oreo roms but user @Oki 's guide helped me a lot and has clear steps and guides to get you all rooted and sorted on custom roms.

What I mean by Factory reset is a full Factory wipe your whole internal is erased. It is like a clean slate new phone.
You should have all the necessary files for your flash on your sd card there is an option to select storage to flash from there.
So when I first swapped from Stock Nougat to AEX I was encrypted on 5/4 ROM my internal was locked by encryption and could only dirty flash roms. it was annoying so I factory wiped and flashed latest AEX from there and didn't set up security right away so no encryption.
I realised my TIBU back ups were all on internal so had to basically start from scratch oops lol.

Just found out that the phone has bricked itself it would play any video or sound so did a hard reset now just getting a constant boot loop trying to get it in to EDL as we speak.....got EDL flashed stock ROM in miflasher now stuck on splash screen.......been on the splash screen for 10 minutes now.......

Ok now got the thing back was able to reunlock the bootloader and installed recovery flashed candy rom with one issue could not mount system so now just flashed Oreo stock rom so all good again....... thanks for the help
The stock ROM encrypts by default, and formatting data partition in twrp is the only way to remove it. But to prevent the encryption before it happens, you have a few options:
1. If you dont plan to root, flash @jcadduono's no verity opt encrypt zip (Google it)
2. Magisk and SuperSU can optionally disable encryption before it happens. Magisk Manager has a config option if you're installing from the app. You can use Aroma SuperSU config if SuperSU is your root method of choice.

I would like to note that AOSP/Lineage/CM-based ROMs dont encrypt by default. though Im sure it could be enabled if you wanted to. This seems to be unique to the stock ROMs, mainly because Google insists that phone OEMs should go for higher security by enabling encryption as the default.
