Magisk 18.1 upgrade - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Anyone upgraded from Magisk 17.1 to Magisk 18.0? I got prompt from Magisk manager to upgrade. Can I upgrade Magisk in Zenfone max pro M1 using the zip update file? Or should I upgrade using TWRP? Just want to make sure it doesn't corrupt the system. Thanks.
Edit: Just upgraded from Magisk 18.0 to Magisk 18.1. No problem.
Here is how I did it:
1) When prompted to upgrade by Magisk, choose option to download the zip only.
2) Download the Magisk 18.1 zip and then move it to /sdcard or android root folder. You should be able to do this as your device is rooted.
3) Reboot into TWRP and install the zip.
*note: When installing the zip, I get some error saying cannot decrypt something. However, the update went through successfully and updated to new version. If not mistaken, we need to run decrypt first before applying the zip. Anyway since it works, I rather stick to methods that is proven successful.

To be safe, I shall use TWRP as well. Can I know if the standard Magisk downloadable from official site will do or we need to get one that is specified for Zenfone Max Pro M1?
Thanks.
edit:
Found out that can just download the magisk zip from the official site and it will do. Thanks!!

I can't say what else would help sorry, those are the exact steps I followed and they worked.
Perhaps you could post in the Magisk part of the forums with some info about your device and see if someone could help.

This is a magisk issue and shouldn't be posted here
Sent from my LG-H910 using XDA Labs
I had the same problem till I went to twrp recovery and flashed the zip that magisk downloaded and it works great. Only problem left on the side is trying to get Xposed to work again through the new magisk on H918 Super Rom, it's not working ATM but I think it's fixable somehow I guess. Magisk is effecting all phones, not just V20 btw.
Check out the video about the API and safetynet by the YouTuber HighOnAndroid. That video let's u know what's up with magisk the day before new magisk update came.
Is it possible that someone backup and share with me boot partition, and from my side I recover it ?!
I'm running:
ROM: RR-0-v6.1.0-h990-Unofficial
Kernel: Gamma Kernel v26.0.0
Magisk: v17.1
Magisk Manager: v5.9.1
I'm not on stock, but i had no error or problems installing it.
Are you on stock or?
I was able to directly install Magisk 17.1 from Magisk itself without issues.

Have you tried another kernel?
Anyone could test sixaxis compatibility checker?
(free on store)
Only on h990ds. 910 and other never were affected by this problem with previous magisk.
Dont know if v17 solved this problem.
Thanks

Tried D.O.T.S and failed, bootloop
I am thinking if someone can backup the boot and share it with us. So we can recover it
Regards..
Has anyone found a way to make 17.1 work on the H990DS? It took me several flashes to get it to boot but after a couple restarts it started bootlooping again so I had to downgrade to 16 and 16 works just fine
Just stay on v16 until they can work the bugs out with v17 -- you aren't gaining anything by going to v17.

This has been tried before but resulted in "bootlooping" the Nvidia TV Box
See answer here by Senior Member macmandarrell1. Might be possible now with the latest Magisk

Root and Magisk

History:
After I change the kernel I lost the root! Then I tried to update the Magisk to version 18 and the Magisk Manager to a most recent version that I don't remember its version.... But my phone continued without root.
Trying to solve this again I install Magisk 16.3 and Magisk Manager 5.6.4 downloading and installing the files available in this link: https://www.stechguide.com/download-magisk-v16-3/
Without success too!
-
So, darlings.
I'm asking for a tutorial to uninstall all the Magisk things of my phone (if you experts think it is necessary) and I'm asking for a tutorial to root again my phone with Magisk.
And I'm also asking to know the latest STABLE version of Magisk and of Magisk Manager COMPATIBLE with my phone and that will work well!
I have a Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005) with [ROM][C9 Pro Port][N900X] AspireTeam C9 Pro v5.0 [18.5.18][Aroma/Smooth/Modded] installed.
Thank you so much!!!

First, Magisk is one of the most documented tools on xda, has its own official forum and especialy its official releases on GitHub (where all versions are available). It's useless to get it elsewhere.
Second, Magisk will only do his magic on an already flashed kernel. If you flash kernel after Magisk, you won't get root.
Third, Magisk flashable zip contains the corresponding Manager and will inject it systematically.
Finaly, you need TWRP for a successful flash of Magisk. With other custom recoveries, errors like "can't find the boot image" can happens.
Now, for a complete removal of Magisk from the system, you only have to flash the latest official uninstaller.
After reboot, go to recovery, flash your prefered kernel then flash Magisk. The latest stable version is v18 and will work well on your rom.

Rooting with official rom?

Hi fellows
I wanted to root my Mi 9T, but I don't want to flash a custom rom, I just want to have root on the official rom (global stable).
As I understand, the correct procedure is:
-unlock nootloader
-flash twrp
-flash magisk
But I have a couple of doubts about this, in particular about updates:
-If my phone is unlocked and I have root, will I still receive official updates from xiaomi?
-if yes, do they install via twrp? Do they fail installation? Do I loose root/bootloader unlock if I install them on unlocked/rooted phone?
-if no, is there an alternative way to install updates without losing root every time?
In other words, what is the best way to have a rooted phone but with official, up-to-date rom? (I have no problems downloading/installing updates manually, but having to reapply root every time would be annoying)

As I know you could receive updates if you unlock your bootloader and flash magisk, I don't have experience with that, I've read that from other brands people do this and still get their updates.
If I'm wrong correct my.
• You will receive the ota but it won't install
• You'll have to install the full rom and reflash Magisk everytime
• Orange Fox recovery can install ota BUT not available for Mi 9T/K20
I'm not sure about Mi 9t (have to wait for bootloader unlock), but it was so on Redmi 3s: I can install OTA updates, it goes through TWRP, but after every update I have to flash Magisk.
It was several years ago, so probably they've changed something
Thanks for your replies guys.
I can now confirm (just tested) that to update a rooted mi9t all you have to do is this:
-flash update zip with twrp (you have to download the update zip from somewhere, like mifirm website, the one downloaded by the update tool is encrypted and won't work!)
-flash magisk
-reboot
Very simple! No need to reflash magisk modules, just the magisk base package and everything works as expected ?

Magisk, I used the latest stable release.

I think it is more simple to do the update and reflash magisk instead of searching for the update package manually, isn't it?

You mean flash the fastboot rom using a computer and then reinstall twrp and magisk?
Seems more convoluted to me, since you still need to download the rom from an external website and additionally you need a pc and you need to reflash twrp every time.... it'll probably work fine, but it seems more complicated to me

Nah, I mean you flash the update you get the usual way. And then magisk afterwards. At least I've never lost twrp with OTA updates.

You mean the one downloaded through the miui updater? I can't flash that with twrp, it's encrypted. In fact, I can't even open the zip file with file manager, it says the file is corrupted. How do you decrypt/use it?
Few days ago I got OTA update while having magisk root and TWRP installed. It rebooted phone into TWRP and installed itself through TWRP. So it seems Xiaomi can now detect what recovery you are using and instead send you recovery OTA instead? Sadly I lost TWRP and root this way and needed to find newer TWRP (old one didnt boot and caused bootloop). Rom also didnt boot (after flashing new TWRP) until I flashed magisk.
Thank you all, it's nice to find this post before I create a new with the same questions.
I bought a new "Mi 9t", it received the latest OTA update, and it has been unlocked after waiting 170 hours.
MIUI Version: MIUI Global 10.3.11 Stable
Android Version: 9 PKQ1.190302.001
Model Name: M1903F10G
Now I need to root it without flashing twrp, I need to be on the Stock recovery because I don't want to lose the OTA update.
I ran this command :
Code:
C:\adb>fastboot boot recovery.img
Downloading ‘boot.img’ OKAY [ 1.404s]
booting OKAY [ 0.127s]
Finished. Total time: 1.560s
but the device reboot to MI-Recovery 3.0, can someone correct me if I'm wrong? also which twrp version support MIUI Global 10.3.11 Stable?

Weird, I tried that (downloading update from the updater app and rebooting to twrp to auto-flash it), but TWRP said update was corrupted. I had to download an unencrypted version from mifirm site to flash it with twrp.
Maybe it's a problem with the version of twrp? Which one are you using? I'm using the one from LR Team

oh I wish I knew After update when I went to flash back old twrp and magisk it resulted in bootloop so I was flashing all twrp I could find just to make them boot and then be able to flash magisk. However name of my file is "recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-0607-REDMI_K20-CN-wzsx150" I think its "fixed" chinese one.
Is "recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-0607-REDMI_K20-CN-wzsx150" support for MIUI Global 10.3.11 Stable?
Can I boot from it to root Mi 9T without flashing?

Can't Root Samsung SM-T380

Hello,
I was wondering if the T380 is rootable?
I tried to follow [TWRP 3.2.1-1] [ROOT] Tab A SM-T380/T385 - 10/02/2018 but it didn't work ( as I assume) since the guide is quite old. I also tried patching the boot.img using the magisk tutorial but I end up with the Installed: N\A Ramdisk: Yes A\B & Sars: no.
I can't also downgrade since I have the latest 2021 patch and the binary is 4 while the version below that is on 3. ROM STOCK
PS: I can install TWRP without any problems, the only issue is rooting with magisk
Any help or suggestion really appreciated.
This is exactly the same problem that I've been having with my T380. I've flashed the stock rom and retried many different methods of rooting with Magisk but they all have failed. If you got it workiing, please tell me what made it work for you. Thanks!
These are the steps that I took using post by Winston Churchill as a guide:
1. Enable OEM Unlock
2. Use Odin to flash TWRP with twrp_3.2.3-1_sm-t380_oo_4119.tar on AP Slot
3. TWRP Wipe/Reformat Data then reboot to recovery
4. Install boot.img patched by Magisk using TWRP (I extracted boot.img from stock firmware and used Magisk to make patched boot.img)
5. Install Magisk.zip using TWRP (this didn't do anything, I had to manually install the apk later on)
6. Install Tab_A_2017_Pie_forced+encryption_disabler.zip using TWRP
7. Wipe Cache and Dalvik
8. Reboot System
I tried alternative approach for installing Magisk using this guide. It basically is extracting boot.img off your current device firmware and using Magisk to patch that boot.img. Then flash the patched boot.img using TWRP (it didn't work for me though)
These are the places I went to get my files:

I haven't done this on the T380, but it works on other Samsung tablets. Instead of the rigamarole of patching the boot image, just flash Magisk-v21.4.zip with TWRP. It won't give you the latest version, but it installs Magisk Manager, and you can use that to update to the latest version of Magisk and Magisk Manager.

Try flashing Magisk23.apk with TWRP as if it were a zip. That worked with latest 11 ROM with T500.
Tried it, didn't work either, I think them latest security patch for this tablet block root or something, I'm literally stuck.
