GPS issue- No lock but many satellites - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I revived my old xda account I made in 2011 for this I've never had to post on XDA for an issue and usually can just find a solution by searching the threads.
About a month ago, my gps stopped working. It will occasionally triangulate by position via wifi wignal, but the gps does not contribute. On the GPS test app, there are about 20 satellites in view, but no lock. Further, all of these satellites are read as having a weak signal.
Things I've tried:
Regular reset
Wipe and reset
Clearing and redownloading AGPS data
Taking out the sim and rebooting (apparently this has worked for people...no idea why)
Resetting network credentials
Finally I unlocked the bootloaded, flashed TWRP and rooted the phone via Magisk and modified the gps.conf file with the TopNTP app. Tried a generic file and Canada specific file
I am starting to think this might be a hardware issue Maybe some corrosion from all the condensation in my scrubs at work? Probably not great for a non-waterproof phone. Any other ideas would be awesome and appreciated!

Have you checked out this discussion https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/guide-how-to-fix-improve-gps-lock-t3815263 ?

That looks very promising! I'm going to try it tonight after work.

There is an app in the play store. I think it is called GPS Status. It has sensor testing functionality and can tell you if the GPS or other sensors are simply not working.

Unable to Use Cell-Tower Triangulation

So this past week I was having tons of issues with the cell-tower triangulation on my Nexus One. I've tried multiple things such as restarting, toggling the "Use Network Location" and mostly everything short of resetting the phone to factory default.
So I was playing around in the Applications menu and decided to just mess around with all the items there. Then, after clearing the cache on the "Google Framework" option, force closing, then restarting my phone, I was finally able to get cell phone triangulation working again!
The problem continues though, because after said procedure I was unable to access the market, or the downloaded section of the store only had 2 items listed. So I did another restart, the market works, but the cellphone triangulation breaks again.
Does anyone have a solution?
well sounds like somethings haywire on the software side of things, i'd try a factory reset/reflashing your current rom etc. or you could just use GPS i suppose

Market problems are generally due to the ROM you're using, although most cooks have that sorted immediately. What ROM are you using?
And I've never heard of anyone anything on the Framework, maybe that in itself was kind of dumb? Have you rebooted or such to see if it clears up?
So what is the issue anyway? Where are you observing that cell tower info isn't working? And you've double checked, and maybe toggled off/on the setting for this?
OP, does triangulation work for you on EDGE?
I've been in this state (2G triangulation works but 3G does not) for about two weeks now.
Most probably a T-Mobile or Google data base issue...

This is true, at one point T-Mobile and 3G the lookups didn't work.. but I haven't heard this in a long time so I'd think
I really wish people would stop referring to it a "triangulation" though, it's estimation based on tower location and possibly data from Cell+Wifi+GPS data that Google has collected. There's no calculation going on.
I am glad someone brought this up. I thought it was just me.
'Estimation' works with EDGE on, but not otherwise. If EDGE is off, Google Maps takes me to the last estimated position!
I am sure something is broken in Maps.

OK, I believe accurate terminology would be "multilateration"
(there is an excellent Wiki article on this) which in turn is based on triangulation. The calculation is done either by the network, e.g. T-Mobile, or by Google based on the location of nearby towers...
I have the same problem as the OP. It occured since Tuesday of last week. I am also on Rogers in the Toronto and GTA region. Use wireless networks is checked under settings. The Enable location setting in the browser is also checked. However, when using 3G, location is unavailable when using the browser and it is also unavailable in the news and weather widget. RadioTime does not pick up my location either. In addition, when I travel into Toronto, the location in google maps is not updated to my new tower location. The location remains in Markham. Strange thing is that when I am on WIFI, location is available. I have tried using EDGE, same problem. I have also tried resetting to factory settings but no luck. I can confirm one of my coworkers is getting the same problem also on his N1. I don't think it is Rogers' problem since iPhone and Maemo users are having no trouble for location service on Rogers. I don't see how it is a problem on Google's servers either if location service is working for users of other OS. However, I don't know if any other Android devices on Rogers are having the same issues though. Can other Rogers users, Big 3 users, Wind/Mobilicity users confirm if their N1's are having the same issues? On a side note, my N1 is stock.
As far as the ROM/Phone. I am using the official FRG83D without any root or modifications to the firmware/bootloader.
It would not pick me up using Edge/wifi/3G and the only thing that did work was GPS. The weird thing is, it appears to be some issue with a service on the phone. The reason why I believe this is because if I went on the mobile Google, the page didn't ask me for permission to access my location.
After I cleared the cache on "Google Framework" and rebooted, everything worked fine and the browser asked me for my permission.
As madballs mentioned, it doesn't seem to be a Rogers issue as I was able to pop the sim card in my XPERIA and it was able to locate me just fine.
After going insane and going without sleep for the past 30 hours, I have linked the issue with the update to Google Goggles. Got rid of the update, location now works fine.
My N1's tower based estimation works ok on Solo (Bell's network). The estimatation is not as good as my Nokia N85 when I put the same SIM card in...
So I got into work today and same thing happened. The location services does not recognize that I am now in Toronto and not Markham. However, I tried out what the OP suggested and cleared the cache in the Google Services Framework and restarted the N1. It then recognized I am now in Toronto. This is quite strange. What does Google Services Framework do? And why would it not update when I travel into another location? It only stopped working last week. I will see if it changes back to Markham tonight when I get off work tonight. If it doesn't work, I will try deleting the Google Goggles update.
Same issues here ...
I am stock FRG83G on Rogers in southern Ontario. Been having this issue for a while but never bothered to look into it. I tried some of the tricks in this thread and here are the results:
- went to 2G - no improvement
- removed updates from Google Goggles and rebooted - no improvement
- Cleared cache and force stopped the Google Services Framework and rebooted and location is working.
I will edit this note if anything changes.
Update: Looks like clearing the framework loses your history of free downloads from the Market ... the paid items are still there.

Oops.. But try this, launch AppBrain, sync, then exit Appbrain and try the market again. I noticed by accident once after restoring all apps using Titanium Backup that before I went into Appbrain the Market didn't know about my installed apps and afterwords it did.

If you restart again, the Market will work correctly again, but the location services will break.
Same issue here on stock FRG83D since November 15.
I've tried both Rogers and Fido SIM cards. I've also done a factory reset and rolled google maps back. Nothing seems to resolve the issue so I've resorted to enabling GPS when it's available.
The same thing started happening to a friend's Acer Liquid E running 2.2 earlier this week. After clearing the maps data on their phone the positioning worked as expected once again but latitude isn't providing the correct location.
Today my N1 refused to update its position. After clearing the maps data it started to work properly.
Both phones are on Rogers and being used from Hamilton to Toronto...
Quick update. As I mentioned on post #11, I had to clear the Google Services Framework cache this morning before the N1 recognized I have left Markham and arrived in Toronto. I am in Markham now, and the N1 automatically recognized I am back in Markham now. Honestly, I have no clue what the problem is. As I stated, I have reset to factory setting a couple times the past week. I would tend to believe by reseting to factory setting is equivalent to clearing the cache. However it did not work then. So I dont know how by clearing the Google Services cache would work today. May be it is just a coincident. I will post again tomorrow when I am back in Toronto and see if the N1 recognizes the location by itself. Oh right, another thing tried was putting my friend's SIM card (he has a iPhone 3GS) into my phone, but no luck. I didn't bother giving him my SIM card to try since another poster on here said his SIM card works on his XPERIA.
beermike: Location services wasn't working for me on November 16th. Right before Eric Schmidt made his Gingerbread comment actually. I wish this hinted that Gingerbread was coming but then it's only us Rogers/Fido users having the problem.
P.S. This is probably not a Rogers issue. But I have to say, Rogers sucks. Too bad I'm on a corporate plan with them.
EDIT: I found another thread that some AT&T folks had this same issue back in May http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679636
Restarted phone yesterday night and location services is not working today again.
I believe the correct term all of you gentlemen are looking for is "A-GPS" or "Assisted GPS".
Per the issue, are these results being achieved with the GPS hardware setting turned OFF, and the mobile network/AGPS turned ON, or are both of these settings turned on and still unable to find an accurate position?

No, it's NOT assisted GPS as that includes the GPS, yes? As mentioned, it's more of this nature: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multilateration
A-GPS is when your cellular provider offers the phone ephemeris data which reduces the amount of time the phone has to calculate the satellite positions and improves accuracy and the ability to maintain a fix because the phone already knows where the satellites are without downloading such data directly from the sats themselves. And in this case of course you're using the GPS, not an estimated location based on your nearby cell towers.
Assuming tower location is correct (and KNOWN...), if you only have one visible tower you should basically show up as being at or near that tower. If there are multiple towers, some set of parameters allows some estimation or predetermined location based on the results. I've read multiple times in the past that when the GPS is in use on a cellphone and My Location (what Google calls the cell tower location stuff of course) is in use, it will upload anonymous data to improve their database. There are multiple such databases, although most of them would only place you at the known location of the tower and not take into account multiple 'visible' towers.
Here's an OpenCellID lookup: http://www.opencellid.org/cell/get?mcc=310&mnc=410&lac=15913&cellid=50762 If you look closely, directly east, across the shopping center there and just into what looks like a bit of an industrial work area there's a square patch with a shadowy place; that's the tower it's referring to.

I9020t on stock 2.3.6 GPS not working.

On Google Navigation, GPS Essentials, GPS Status, it can never get a fix. Everything needed is enabled, tried multiple reboots, etc, still not working. Left it there for like a hour and after still no fix. GPS Essentials doesn't even see any satellites while trying to get a fix.
Any fixes for me or is this just a hardware issue?
Are you testing in a big open area? That's where I would test first. Is your 3G data working? With 3G data, it locks significantly faster than without it.
Tested in both outdoors and indoors by a window, doesn't even see 1 satellite.
3G data is enabled.
Might be a HW thing. Try flashing stock 2.3.4.

Can you explain what you did step by step? In the other thread you just said how it just worked after a month...
Thanks,

it's definitely a hardware issue, have the same problems.
SNR values stay below 30! Insufficient to get a good fix.
Tested many gps fix apps, all not able to solve.
Fixed my problem by using an external Bluetooth GPS Antenna (old Nokia) and GPS Bluetooth app from the Market. Now GPS fix in seconds, SNR values above 40.. constant fix never looses signal etcetc...
Antenna on device is to weak!

A different GPS issue after upgrade to 2.3.5 (sense 3.0)

Hi,
I've got an odd one I've only just noticed since the upgrade (though, I cannot guarantee that was the cause).
i can no longer get a GPS fix when using an app that calls for satellite data. The notify icon just keeps flashing. I've downloaded various GPS test apps and they all show no evidence of any signal. I've tried clearing AGPS data; clearing google maps data/cache; removing and re-installing google maps updates (all the usual suggested fixes for the previous 2.3 issues.
However, it WILL work if I unmount the SD card from the phone. it finds the satellites fine. But as soon as adding the card again, it fails.
I don't really want to reformat the card so I'm looking for suggestions of possible files to delete. So far, I've tried /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.maps/cache but that didn't work.
Any ideas on what else to wipe?
thanks
this problem also affect my phone, please help us
Had some success last night (until I got too tired and cold standing outside).
It seems to have something to do with the built in HTC Locations application. If I go onto the SD card and delete the files (with the exception of the default footprint images) within .data/navigation and reboot, then GPS works OK.
If I reinstall Locations and use the app (bring up maps, navigation mode etc) it will eventually kill off GPS again.
I'll try some more tests to be more specific, it seems to be important to fully reboot the device before testing for a GPS signal after making changes which is a bind...
I expect the final solution will be (if you want to keep a stock ROM unrooted and it's not later fixed by an upgrade) to delete some location files from the SD card, install an HTC Locations stopper application from the market - so that calendar and contacts stop bringing up Locations rather than Google maps - don't use any Locations widgets and avoid firing Locations up.
I have the same problem since I updated Radio version to 26.14.04.28_M. I tried many Roms (sens roms, Cyanogenmod, MIUI) and all has the same issue with GPS!!.
So I am waiting for new radio version!!
after Re-flashing 26.09.01.11_M2 Radio My phone can get GPS signal in less than 15 seconds and it's working perfectly!!
I have had this problem too
Will try the radio flash
Thanks mate
Sorry for the delay - it's just got weirder.
Even after trying the fixes I did below - it started behaving the same - no GPS satellites found (unless the SD card is pulled).
However, it works fine if I'm away from the house (half a mile or more). Different city, works fine etc. and it keeps working until I get near my home, then it can't find satellites (unless the SD card is pulled)....!!!!
Some local information is causing this but I've no idea. I've tried clearing the assisting data but that doesn't help.
Cheers for any suggestion.
gps in India
did anyone get the fix for the GPS lock delay?
Cant get a lock after Sense3.0 update. Bad that HTC did not do proper testing.
In the end, I found out that it only wouldn't lock when I was at home - other locations were fine.
In the end I got it to work - for how long I don't know. But I switched off wifi and mobile data, then changed the config to not update location and time from mobile network. Shut down and then pulled the battery.
Started it up again. Turned on network time.
Waited a while, turned on mobile data. Waited a while and then rang a GPS tester and it worked (took a while to lock for the first time. Turned on wifi, checked again and it's been fine since.
The Achille's heel for desire hd has been its gps. It screws up after a few months anyway.

have you tried any other SDcard? If it works with another SDcard, download Titanium Backup (or any other backup app which allows you to backup online) and then buy the Titanium Backup Pro Key app or buy with PayPal and backup your apps, then sync to dropbox.
Watch the videos for both of the apps when in Market.
EDIT: NVM, but the backup app is recommended for everyone if you use to install custom ROMs.

GPS Issues with X Play

Hey People,
I got my X Play around 20th October and been using since. The GPS was amazing first few days but for the past 10-12 days, it has been iffy at best and completely non-functional at worst.
Sees satellites but does not lock. When it does lock, SNRs are pretty low and accuracy is in the range of 40-50m while driving sometimes, and 7m other times. Ditto with standing at the same spot. Most of the time it would just not lock; and the Google location service would show me 50Km away from where I really am.
Anyone else experiencing these issues? I'm kinda drawn right now in pin pointing a software or hardware issue... My 30 day return is wrapping up tomorrow so there's no real time for factory reset and test extensively. :-/
Used it today for around 150 miles. No issues at all and not had any in previous tests. I know that doesn't help your situation but it will help bump it for now.
Sent from my XT1562 using Tapatalk
No problems here so far, but try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
You can use it to reset it or download A-GPS data
I'm facing the exact same issue as the OP. Installed GPS Status, resetted, downloaded new data.... Still the same.
Can anyone help?
Try going into fastboot and apply "fastboot erase modemst1" and "fastboot erase modemst2" through the cmd of your computer. Of course open a cmd in the folder that contains your fastboot.exe or add it to your PATH on Windows and then run those commands with your device connected and in fastboot mode.

I have big Problem with gps, i can see up to 25 satellites but not getting a fix at all. Tried all apps who update the a gps data but still no fix. All Satellites in view have an snr of 0. Could my gps be broken ? Is there anything related to gps which could be broken, read about pulling sim helped for some people ? Could something with my modem be not ok. Came from a Single sim and flashed dualsim software and its working.
I got the same problem. It's a hardware defect. Just head to Motorola's customer service and, with some luck, get a fix.
It works fine for the most part, but one day it completely failed to work for several hours (running mendhaks GPSLogger). That and some other random force closes with Google Voice or the contacts app lead me to believe the phone simply has to be rebooted every other day or it starts acting funny.
I noticed problems with GPS too. Find GPS fix takes very long (tens of seconds) and the signal is unstable. GPS in my phone is useless. Phone was in service (authorized) but it didn't help (they reflashed firmware - I use stock Android 6.0 all the time). How can I fix it?
Same here. Any solution?
Just to add my.2 cents... I was never able to use Google maps back in the days with my Nexus 5. It would just act weird all the time. Since x play I have used maps extensively for work. Sometimes 12 +hours running all over town here in Ottawa. Even used copilot alongside to create a fastest itinerary with 40 different addresses or more and then used maps to navigate to eàch individual addresses one after the other. Never had a single problem with lollipop, marshmallow or 6.0.1 (used it again today) and never toggled on the option for better accuracy (ie scanning for WiFi or Bluetooth). It was always fast and quite accurate. On rare occasions, I had to reboot the device to get my first lock but other than that no issues whatsoever. And I would leave Google maps on all day in the truck for easily 12 hours through the day while doing my deliveries and still had battery at end of the day when I got home. Used my phone to also check my Facebook or email and make calls here and there through the day. No issues for me. Hope you get your issue resolved ?
For me, occasional GPS issues started with the Android 6.0.1 Update. So far I have not found a solution that sticks. Deleting the modemst helps about as much as a reboot, meaning it works afterwards, but the issue returns after a while. No idea what's going on here, since the GPS works flawlessly...when it works...
For many Motorola devices GPS doesn't work when connected to a 3g network. No problem when connected to 2g, 4g, WiFi, data disabled or no network. For this cases follow bellow steps:
You need to replace /system/etc/gps.conf by a valid configuration. Just
search in Google by "Google gps.conf" (without quotes). You will need
root.
Reason is that Google delivers Android with an invalid gps.conf file, for devices with pure or next to pure Android.
You also need to verify APN settings, and add agps and supl if not exists.
For best performance enter the nearest ntp servers, search Google for ntp server list.
Hi all,
Same problem here. When it was new, the GPS was really really fast and reliable. But now (since an update...? I don't know, it's the phone of my wife), the GPS don't run : it's see sat, but the SNR stay on 0 for all. Sometimes, it's run but it's really slow to get SNR and keep it.
So I think it's only a software issue, but I don't know how to resolve it.
The phone is not rooted, so I can't try the Simiono's method.
By advance, thank you.
Fred
I have also this.sometimes it takes 10 minutes to receive signal.what to do?I ise it without data or wifi.only gps.
Peace to all

Thank you for your suggestion, but I have been using the GPS in this MXPE for ten months without issue.
What could kill it? I haven't stopped the phone.
I tried Waze, Google maps and GPS Status & Toolbox app with same results. Sometimes I have a lock and 9 satellites for a few minutes. Other times I have no satellites for many minutes.

Hello there! Sir do you have a Stock ROM for Xplay i6s Plus???? i've been searching the net the whole month of January until today (February) but i cannot find a working ROM. My phone is dead boot, its not charging anymore and wont boot, but my PC still detects it. Hoping for some help. Thanks a lot.. I will appreciate any help.
I had the same issues for a long time and I thought is a software problem but once when trying to fix the satelites I pressed the screen in the upper right part of the screen and started to fix them really quick. I opened up the middle part of the back and searched where is the gps antenna. There are more connectors there , some for flash in the middle, but the ones for gps antenna is located on top and and right. I pulled them a little to make a bigger pressure on the board and since then I have no problem with fixing the gps ?
I hope it is helpfull for you guys because before this I was considering buying a new phone

GPS is not working satellites visible but no fix

Hi, i just made this account to post this problem here and I hope I find help. My s5 is not rooted and brand new (3 days?) with the version 6.0.1. My phone does see the satellites but it doesn't locks on them so I don't have GPS at all except with WiFi and the other things but that is kinda useless and not accurate. If I really have to I would root my phone cause it's annoying as hell and I'm a traveller so I need that and I don't always have internet. Hope you can help me
Kind regards
Same problem, similar situation, using SM-G900A, Galaxy S5 with AT&T. Satellites show with GPS Tools app, but Google Maps and Waze don't find GPS location. Tried many things, including factory reset. No joy...
