Titanium frame edge repair? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

So... I pretty much never drop my phone. Got away with not having a case on my S4 for several years with no serious drops. Get a new Essential (first NEW phone I've bought since 1995) and within a couple days drop it on my tile floor, right on the edge. Looks like the lip of the titanium frame cracked, but not the ceramic back (phew?).
Thing is... how do you repair that? Best I can think of is get some gel type superglue and fill in the little open slot. But I really don't know if that's a great idea. Anyone experienced know better?
I'd include a pic in case the description isn't clear but see no way to do so.

I doubt it's the titanium that has cracked, it must be the ceramic edge. I would probably go for a sealant rather than a glue, not that I have any experience doing this. A clear sealant would be easier to apply I would think & possibly less likely to shrink or seep inside. Or the glue Essential use which softens with a heat gun judging from the strip down videos, not all glues will do this, it would make it easier should you ever need to open it up.

Not that this will help you but the metal itslef can be polished out. My last case started getting loose and cause the metal to get mucked up from either the case or dirt wedging and rubbing. Looked and felt bad.

You'd think, but the back panel is fine. It is defintely part of the frame. Though part of me is still unclear on whether the matt parts of the frame (which show up great in rambleon84's pic) are Ti with a different finish or a separate material. Maybe the back panel is glass and it is the matt strips which are ceramic? But it is that matt radius that is missing. Here's a pic to provide 1000 words.

? you are right it's the titanium, that is surprising!
Though I did think the black edge on the back was the ceramic back panel but now realise it is recessed & black edge is part of titanium.
Also repairing right on the edge is tricky, the softer sort of plastic filler I was thinking would be good in a small slot probably won't last long. Maybe an epoxy would be best, though they do shrink when set (well at least the electronic military compliant ones we used to use did, not that you'd need that externally on your phone, & given the small depth shrinkage shouldn't be a problem)

I even wonder if Essential might replace that under warranty as I don't think Titanuim should exhibit that sort of brittleness. Also is the rest of the titanium edge so "rough" looking? If so that would indicate a definite manufacturing defect, but I guess it must be from impact, though it looks more like compression damage to me, not that I know what their titanium is expected to perform like on impact.

Yeah that is some sort of composite or something. Maybe find a simple epoxy (white?) And fill it in. You'd need to tape real well though so you don't get it anywhere else. Or just throw and case on the phone and forget.
Haven't seen a crack/chunk break off like that but luckily nothing functional broke

I thought so too. Granted it was a good 3ft onto tile and landed JUST so. But still... last part I thought would break.

I was thinking the same though I certainly won't ever be able to replace the ceramic back then, since it ain't gonna come off like the OEM adhesive.

Sadly bought new from some weird "phone only" ebayer. Probably warranty replacement stock. So I don't see Essential doing anything. And that's fair IMO.

The only bit that looks rough is the exposed surface where it broke off. What you see on the side is reflection of the desk veneer (the finished Ti sure is crazy reflective).

I'm a little tempted to do that. I've never used a case before (hate the concept) but this phone just drops so easily thanks to the super slippery surface.

Warning: Don't buy this case for fuze

I purchased this case from daydeal.com

And it puts pressure on both the outer edge of the touch screen and the touch pad at the base of the machine. The fit is great, but this button/screen pressure renders the screen and buttons useless.
If anyone has any advice other than throwing this in the garbage, please let me know. I've considered a dremmel tool session, but I'm not sure it's worth it on such an inexpensive part.
Buyer beware!

sand it down using a nail filer.
I agree. It seems that several cases like this have the same problem. I used a small knife, but you can use just about anything to scrape down the inner mold remnants and then it works fine.
Well, sure... thanks. Like I said, I might break out the dremmel tool and do a nice finishing job on this.
The main point is that we shouldn't HAVE to alter products to make them have their basic function. To me, this is like buying car tires that are square, and all you have to do is shave off the corners until they're round so they can roll. $13, or however much it is going for these days, is really quite expensive for two pieces of plastic. It's even more expensive when they don't work out of the box.
So, buyer beware.
Would it have been so tough to include the case name into the thread title? Generically mystery threads ain't cool...
I got a similar case... but all I did was spend 2 hours of filing lol... sucked but works great so far.. hopefully the coating doesn't peel off anytime soon.. not bad for a 9 dollar case on ebay
mine it's transparent any suggestions?

Thanks!!! I got my case the same night I loaded a new ROM. My case only caused intermittant problems, so I thought it was the ROM. I was getting ready to flash to the previous ROM when I read this thread. I removed the case and have not had the problem since. My case was clear also. My solution was to throw the case away and order a different style case.
Is this just as bad..
I was looking at possibly getting this case for my Fuze, then I seen this thread. This case looks pretty much the same, but not sure as how
it will fit, and I rather not purchase something that will cause problems.
It's from a different website, but could potentially have the same issue.
Anyone think it's worth it? Or just forget that style of case altogether?
Also wondering, if these types of cases hender in when your trying to acess the 'softkeys' on the screen [the lil calender & contacts spot]. I like being able to slide my thumb from there to the buttons, but i was wonder if the lil spot between could become a problem. Thanks.

i love the black rubberized case. i got it off of ebay and just sanded down the inside with some rough sandpaper. i painted the inside black because the edges show and now it looks great.
I bought something similar, but it was the black silicon case, so it is flexible. It's a bit annoying at times, as it is flimsy, but it does what I need it to do. I picked this thing up for around $6 shipped on ebay.
If you read my thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459761 you will see what I did. All I did was sand down the inside upper left of the case and it has worked perfectly ever since. I posted pictures in the thread also. Hope that helps.
The case is really great, after you take the pressure off the inside upper left corner.
For what it's worth...I have this case in pink and I haven't had a single problem. I put it on the second day I had my device and it's been on ever since (only removed a couple of times to get to sd and sim).
I didn't need to file anything down. Maybe the difference is in the manufacturing of the color lot.
For those who don't mind spending a little more to protect their investment...(To me it's a BIG investment) http://www.noreveusa.com/product/HTC_P4600_-_HTC_Touch_Pro_Tradition_leather_case.html All buttons and interfaces accessible. Great protection!!

I have that case. . just went ahead and ground it down a bit. . ain't no thang at all. But before doing that, it did mess the screen up.

Couldnt agree more,I bought a new fuze from att and when it got here the spring or the slide one was way loose,it clicked when you are talking on it, called to get a replacement exchange the day after, I was told I would have to BUY another phone and when they recieved mine they would credit me.I am still p.o.ed,I told they lady that I already paid for a new phone and apparently didnt get one and this wasnt right.
at&t version of the case
I haven't noticed any problems with the "same style" case offered by at&t, but, I popped the top cover off of mine. I have a "invisible shield" screen protector on my Fuze, and noticed a slight indentation on the top left corner, and I also noticed a slight indentation above the left & right areas above the "HTC" logo at the bottom of the screen. Like I said, I haven't noticed the problems pointed out here, but I thought that if I'm seeing an indentation on the invisible shield,
then there has to be some pressure being applied to the screen. I went ahead and shaved the areas noted with the red in the photo below. Hope this helps.
I got a similar case off ebay too:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220306410400&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
works great. no need for filing whatsoever.

Broken Glass after only 30cm down!!

About one hour ago, my Tab get down when i exit from my car.
About 30-35cm only, and see, glass broken... there is embarrassed for a terminal whit this price!!
So... someone have any idea about where i can find a glass for change it?
The glass is Gorilla Glass and should have stood up better, much better.
If I were you I would be asking Samsung to fix this under Warranty as clearly the glass has failed.
Gorilla glass or not, it depends on the way the Tab fell.

Gorilla glass is not indestructible. I got a scratch on my Galaxy S just from dropping it maybe 5 inches.
But that was face down on a gravel road. I am only mad at myself because it would be silly to expect any screen material to just take a rock getting slammed into it. The glass is tough but anything hard hitting it at just the right angle will still break it.

Actually I have but I think you are missing my point. It isn't about the amount of force being applied but rather how the force is applied. Like with my accident it hit at just the right angle on a sharp rock. BB's are round which leads me to believe the screen shouldn't be that easily scratched by them. But I bet if you tried that same exercise with a slingshot and a nice jagged rock the results would be quite different.
I have dropped it other times from much higher places and it survived just fine. It is all about how it lands and the TAB is pretty heavy so it doesn't take much distance for it to reach free fall speed. The TAB is going faster after falling one foot than another device that doesn't weigh as much. Sure they would eventually both reach free fall speed and fall at the same rate but the TAB being heavier gets there quicker.
Tomorrow i will try to call the customer care..
And what are they going to do for you? Tell you that your screen is broken? They aren't going to replace something that was clearly caused by mishandling. I know it sucks but you just have to accept it and be more careful from now on. There is probably a local shop than can repair it for you but as new as the TAB is they might have issues finding replacement parts.
I dropped my really hard from about 60cm up...face first onto a marble floor....nothing happened to it..
AFAIK Gorilla glass makes the screen hard to scratch. It shatters all the same as any other glass ;-)
Thats why they call it glass I guess.
Surface is hard but side impact looks like the cause in this case. My guess is if it had fell face down you would have had some and maybe possible no scratches.
Either way it just tells us what we already know. The TAB doesn't like being dropped. Much like a lot of other expensive electronic goodies.
I wish the TAB came with a lanyard because this thing can be a little slick and hard to hold onto. Especially if you swap hands half way through your movie and get lube on it. Almost dropped mine a couple of times already.
Again in the corner! If I see a picture of a device with a broken screen it is always in the corner. Think I'm going to get one of those ugly silicon cases:

As you can see the display is protected all away around the edge. I agree with jnutz, it is how the force is applied. Appearently those displays doesn't like a force momentum on the corners (or sideways on one of the edges of the screen)
OP, please prove me wrong because I really don't like those silicon cases, but did it just bounced on its corner or perhaps on the bottom edge?

This device is nearly 98% glass on the front with a thin strip of material bordering the screen.. it's going to happen exactly like you pictured it.

Pixel XL losing paint on the edge of the phone

Well this sucks, I want to start off by saying I have yet to drop this phone and I have had it in a Spigen case with a screen protector since day one.
So I'm sitting in a meeting during work and I took my case off my phone to clean between the case and screen protector since it isn't flush, and I noticed beneath where the case sits on the left edge slightly below half way of the phone that the paint is scrapping off. I am wondering if anyone else has been losing paint on the border near where the screen glass is? The case I have been using is Spigen Rugged Armor. I also take the case off maybe once every other week.
I pre-ordered mine the day they announced it and got it shortly after the first wave started shipping. The other day I noticed that the bottom of mine was chipping away. I contacted Google Fi support and they're shipping me a new one.

That's similar to my chipping, I just got off the phone with support and they're looking into what can be done...
I wish I had the support you received! They told me it is what it is basically... and here I was hoping I was done shopping for phones...
Edit: I did try mentioning you experienced the same issue and contacted Fi Support instead of the CS I spoke to, they said you must have had other software/hardware related issues to get the device replaced...

Not a single scratch or chip or flake of paint lost yet.
I've got a skin that's been sitting in the mailing package for a couple weeks now.
I've been too lazy to put it on.
I may have to think about doing that soon.
Getting phone replaced for something that is most likely to happen again? Just wondering what you plan on doing when the paint chips on the replacement?
mine is the same, pain is missing from the sharper edges in the style of chips, the rounded edges in places have signs of wear as if I have managed to wear the pain down. not a great sign in a little over a month, guess it is just cheap paint on them, worst comes to the worst I'll just get a slim case to put over it.

I have ZERO issues with the hardware or software. I think people are having one off situations. Out of the millions of phones out there; there are only a few reporting issues like this.
I had mine since they went live (at BestBuy) and have yet to experience any issue. And I only have a hard case to cover the sides. The top and botton have no protection...
So to those with issues... Do you keep your keys in the same pocket as phone? Could something be rubbing it the wrong way?
I always keep my phone in my left front pocket withe nothing else in it.
Is this happening with a case on your device...?
Sent from my Pixel XL using XDA-Developers mobile app
it's in a pocket on it's own and it's not only the chips on the hard corners it's wear on some of the smoother corners as if it has been rubbed off. I do work in the building industry so it will come into contact with some abrasive materials in my pocket but it's the first phone I've had this issue with, but then it's also the first phone I've had with so much metal on it, it could just come down to a mix of the larger metal surface and the paint not being finished in a durable way.
I don't use a case and never have since about the Z1, it just seems like this phone is going to force me to put it in a case before 6 months is up due to the paint wearing badly.
Not a single blemish on my paint (or glass for that matter) and my phone comes in out and of pocket many times a day, sometimes with a pocket that has a metal rivet above it that it rubs against as going in/out. Black XL 32GB
I have a bear motion on mine (waiting on nillkin nature tpu delivery), just checked to make sure, no nicks dings scratches or swirls. I put it in the same left pocket alone in every pair of pants I wear. Nothing ever goes into the left pocket, except maybe some pills. I don't stick my hands in my pockets when they are dirty or dusty.
This is anodized aluminium, having it hit against anything will scratch and ding them, as happens with anything make with the same material.

Otterbox Defender + Whitestone Dome

I've used a defender case for nearly a decade. I work in an industrial environment and need maximum protection. I also enjoy the holster, especially with a phone this big!
After trying a couple of useless TGSPs, and reading the raving reviews for the Whitestone Dome, I knew I had to make it work.
The TGSP installation went perfectly, and 5 minutes of carving with a craft knife was all it took until the Defender fitted perfectly!

Thank you.
If I'm seeing it correctly, if you took a ruler and layed it across the middle of the phone it would be laying directly on the glass, not touching the edges at all. Correct?
Even if that is the true, the sides still look a little higher than I have seen on most other cases. That's a good thing.
Correct.
This makes me nervous as if the phone falls on an edge, the outcome would not be good.

Actually, it's worse than than. Even if your phone falls perfectly flat, face down on a flat surface, the high bumpers on the top/bottom will hit, with nothing in the middle of the long stretch. This will result in the phone bending/flexing in the middle. Glass isn't meant to flex like that. The result is likely breakage. It's like the phone screen is designed to break almost no matter what sort of impact there is.

It depends on how the case. Watch this UAG drop test, especially falling on the screen side
Hey, where exactly did you shave off the plastic?. I'm looking to get a defender and want to use the Dome glass protector as it seems to be the best thanks

If you look at the first picture in the OP, you just need to carve out the two top corners a little.
They are the only two places the case interferes with the whitestone.
I fitted the whitestone first, and left it overnight to properly cure.
Then I offered the top hard section of the case to the phone and scored (with a craft knife) the inside edges of the notch at the top of the whitestone.
After removing the top of the case, I started removing material from the corners, a little at a time.
Keep trying to fit the case, then carve a bit more, until it fits.
It only took a few minutes.....
That's awesome, this might be the way to go for me then as I currently have the Supcase full body armour one. I love everything about it except the plastic screen protector which is all scratched up after only two weeks. I'm babying this new phone to so it's quite disheartening
The OtterBox Pursuit series fits perfectly with the WhiteStone Done, I'd go as far as to say it's the perfect combination for protecting the S9+.
I have the Otter Box Defender because I work construction and it has proven it's the best on my S5, V20 and now S9 Plus . Just ordered the Whitestone Dome too on Amazon cus my wife had a discount and I got $10 off .
Similar Option
Privacy screen protector and no shaving down the Defender.

Would like to ask you (Otterbox Defender+WSD glass user) whether you got change your casing a lot? Or take out the casing to change your SIM Cards? Or you never take out at all?
If you got take out the casing a lot of times, will the case push the glass out?
Just to clarify did you carve before you applied the protector or once it had been adhered to the cell phone?

Redmi Note 7 Case

Just received my phone yesterday and set it up. Now I'm trying to figure out which case would be good to protect it. That one that comes with it is good for fingerprints but won't really protect it as the rear camera sticks up and it doesn't even protect the front screen as it's not high enough. Any thoughts on what case may work well, or ones to avoid? I'll start looking. Thanks.
iBetter, awesome case. Protect camera lens by . 1mm. Can buy on Amazon.de or .co.uk. Maybe .com too.

why hide beautiful hardware under a case?
Always the original Xiaomi. Don't buy yellow, getting dirty soon.

I know but if I drop it the front or back may shatter. I know it's Gorilla glass 5, but it's still glass. I'm looking for a case that's not too overpowering but still protects it. Something clear maybe with some bumpers in the corners and that rises up above the lenses on the back to keep them from getting scratched. I'll find something. Thanks.

as my RSM once told me "eh soldier, you are not supposed to drop your phone you know?"
i'm waiting on my flex filament to arrive before i print out my corner studs. that's the only acceptable "protection" to me to minimally detract from the beautiful hardware.

I know. That's what I'm talking about. Do you have a 3D printer? I guess you'll leave the lenses unprotected in the back. I bought this one about a week ago, but it may take another week or so to get to me. If it seems good once it arrives I'll let you all know. https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Xiaomi...Slim-Soft-TPU-AirBag-Case-Cover-/123666850179. Thanks.

yupe, have a printer,
i have designed my corner to take into account of the additional height offset of the protruding lens,
i also made the top right piece into 1 huge piece to include a skirt around the lens.

Really cool. You'll have to show us the final product once it's done. What do you think of the one I bought? It looks a little overwhelming, but it's the best one I found so far. And it was cheap. This one's unobtrusive and looks good, but I'm not sure it provides protection for the back lenses, and also it doesn't have any corner protection. https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Xiaomi...-Clear-Case-Cover-Tempered-Glass/254208605942
Heading back to bed. It's after 1 am here. I'll check back in later today.

looks similar to the clear silicon case they threw in with sans the color highlights.
visually clear is the best, but you are still missing out on the feel of the hardware. you should really try the phone without protection, RAW is best. i like the feel of the phone a lot and it's a fingerprint magnet.
the best advice i can give you to not drop your phone is to not pick up the phone so much. The more time the phone spends not in your hands is proportional to the risk of phone drops. while the time the phone spends in your hands exponentially increases the phone drop risk.

I love this case:

The navy blue one looks really nice and it protects well. Plus it's $4, so that's an easy call to make.

Looks very protective. Thanks.
You're not just worried about the front/back but the sides as well.
This week my Ferilnso 2.5d tempered glass cracked while my brand new 1 week old Redmi Note 7 was in my pocket.
Somehow a tiny piece of glass shard made its way into the side of my free RN7's case and managed to scuff a small section on side of my phone.
You can only imagine how pissed I was finding out my glass screen protector not only cracked BUT also scuffed the side of my phone WHILE IT WAS IN THE FREAKING CASE!!!!
Moral of the story, you want full protection including the sides not just the front/back glass.
I'm now on the hunt for a better quality case than the free one Xiaomi gives us in the box

Trying to find a Rexang clear case for my RN7 similar quality to the blue and rose gold cases my wife and I had on our old Honor 8 phones.
Also had a very similar style goosberry brand case in gold on my old Note 4.
Those cases were so durable. Cannot tell you how many times the phone fell on hard surfaces and nothing happened. AND the case still looked good after lol
