Rooting the Mate 8

As more people are receiving their Mate 8s and participation in the forum increases, I'm noticing large and growing threads where information on various topics is actually getting scattered across multiple threads. For example, on questions relating to syncing the Mate 8's contacts/calendar with Google, I believe I've seen questions and responses get posted across no less than 4 different threads, if not more. As these threads grow, this information is getting buried and less cohesively identified with info pertaining to the exact same topic, but on another thread.
So, in an attempt to refocus the topic of ROOTING (also discussed on various threads now) to one easily sourceable location, I am starting this thread. The hope being that any latest updates and details on rooting the Mate 8 can be consolidated here (at least until a true verifiable guide can be posted) so that interested members need not go hunting all over the place.
Currently, there isn't a much detailed information out there about how and what process(es) to use to root a Mate 8, but a number of people (myself included) are very interested and it's likely more will be looking soon. There have been a few "guides" thrown out there already, but these have turned out to be totally untested for the Mate 8 and later unsuccessful when attempted by members. So if anyone has updated info on how to achieve rooted status, please do share, since only the following (below) seems to be where we stand based on what's already been discussed:
Locked Bootloader
For some/many including myself, it seems the Mate 8 is the first Huawei phone we have purchased, with one previously unknown aspect being that Huawei locks its bootloader, which can't be unlocked within settings-->developer options, or other means. As such, using the power + volume keys is ineffective to boot into any other system status, such as recovery mode or bootloader mode to even attempt a root process
Unlocking the Bootloader
There have been discussions about how to achieve this and it appears Huawei can be contacted directly and a bootloader unlock key can be requested for a user's specific phone by providing Huawei with the phone's IMEI and some other information (for prior Huawei owners who have done this, forgive the rest of our ignorance). There is a specific link on Huawei's website where this can be requested: http://emui.huawei.com/en/plugin.php?id=hwdownload&mod=list
What's Next?
Surprisingly, this is pretty much as far as the discussions have gone to date. In fact, no one has posted as to whether or not they have even heard back from Huawei and successfully unlocked their bootloader with a provided key (or by any other means). Moreover, once the bootloader is unlocked, what the next appropriate steps might be(?). At present there are no custom recovery tools such as TWRP available for the Mate 8, so I presume a rooting process, if achieveable in the near-term would involve adb command lines. But this is where I and others are really hoping for the expertise and insight of other members. Please let the forum know if/when you have additional info!
:good:
I can shed a little bit of light on this, I think.

That is as far as I've gotten, because they require money to download the rooting tool (which won't even work unless the bootloader is unlocked.) Huawei says that I need to have had my account on my device for 14 days before I can get an unlock code, so I'm waiting for two weeks to try and do that. If anyone has any more information, it would help, but that seems to be the only place I've seen a successful root.

Thanks duraaraa, this is helpful. I live in China so I'm thinking I may stop by one of the big electronics markets here this week to see if these guys are actually able to apply a proper root yet. Even if they can, however, that doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to have them do it for my Mate 8, simply because there are many things I don't trust here, and having a stranger monkeying around with my mobile--presumably with some unknown piece of software to allow superuser access to the system--probably qualifies as one of those things. (Of course, that may all be moot anyway, since who knows if Huawei has left some type of backdoor on the phone for the Chinese government...but that's another topic to be filed under "paranoia" I suppose.) Also, I understand you not wanting to pay some strangers (who can't speak any English) money over Taobao for this just quite yet. With all the scams and cheating that goes on here, good luck getting any recourse if it's just another one of those. Or even if it's legit but problems arise, the language barrier for non-Mandarin speakers to seek support would be huge.
Question: when you say you need the account on your device for 14 days, what do you mean by that? It's not enough to create an account online and request the unlock key with your IMEI and other info from the website form? Do they actually want to verify that you've accessed your Huawei account from your phone, like through one of the 20 Huawei apps they've pre-installed? And only after doing that will the 14-day clock start?

If you live in China, hopefully you can get better information than I can!
As for the account, it just says you need to have it registered on the phone for 14 days. There is a setting in options where you enter your huawei ID. I imagine it is that. I will let you know if it worked in about 12 days

Not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean, upon rooting, how does that affect the warranty? I personally don't know, but if I had to guess, I imagine the official manufacturer position is that it would technically void the warranty. Of course, this can be reversed by unrooting and reflashing any custom recovery back to stock. But this is putting the cart before the horse, since many of us are most probably interested in determining how to root and not so much what the manufacturer's official standpoint on rooting is.
The phone has been out for a while now, we must be getting close to someone having waited 14 days?
Looking back, i registered on the Huawei site on the 21st of December, which by my count is over 14 days as long as they don't take into account Bank holidays. I tried to request the bootloader last night i got the "you have to wait 14 days" message. I will try again when i get home, as i don't have all the details with me right now.
Edit: found all the details on the phone itself, and still get the same error message.
There´s a Bootloader- Unlock Code Request-Thread at HuaweiClub, but i cant tell that requests have been answered yet...
http://en.club.vmall.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=33654
I also tried various Root Methods (kingo, Angel root, Genuis ect) but Marschmallow still seem to be unbreakable, maybe because of the Bootloader Lock...
As for BBS root, you need a weibo account and need to pay credits for downloading the root software, i tried this but did not want to add a credit card or anything.
i found a root guide on another chinese forum, this time with actual screenshots.

To me it looks like that looks like Huawei will give out keys via this method, just after the 2 weeks.

altaz,
Were you able to get the unlock code yet? In your first post on this thread that you mentioned you registered on the site on Dec. 21st. By my count that's over 14 days, but the message the website kicks back when applying for the unlock code talks about the ID being used on the phone for more than 14 days. Did you login on your phone via settings the same day you registered your ID online?
In fact, can you (and anyone else) confirm that this is the message you also received when applying for the unlock code on Huawei's site: "The Huawei ID used to apply for the unlock code has not been used on the device for more than 14 days." I would imagine someone's had to have already passed this mark, or if not, damn near close by now(?).
I've tried again today, and received the same setting. I read on one of the vmall forums that the english site doesn't work and that you should use the Chinese site. So i went to the Chinese site, and again received the same error message.
I originally registered on the phone itself for the HiCare app and HiCloud, received activiation emails which confirmed that the activation went through. I then noticed though that there seems to be another level of activation. You can get there by going to Settings > Huawei ID > Member
On this screen there is a message under my email that states "Activate Huawei membership, enjoy exclusive services". Now, everytime i click on this to activate i receive an error message saying "Can't connect to server, touch to refresh". Tried refresh lots of times, but doesn't work. Been through all my network/system settings and given everything network access, still doesn't work. I've tried it while connecting to WiFi, 3G and 4G, and it's still the same.
I've pretty much given up hope of getting past this screen, and added it to the growing list of "software/connectivity" quirks i am experiencing with EMUI.

I was thinking about using something like kingoroot to get root access, then getting some kind of custom recovery, then getting normal root and getting rid of kingo, but have no idea will it work and how to get it to work. Any ideas? Or should i just stay with unrooted p8....

Hi, be careful with Kingroot; I used it on my Huawei P8 lite and it bricked my phone (could not update any app and not go back to factory settings). Also the Huawei website was hopeless for me. But I got the unlock code by PHONING the general Huawei helpdesk. I used a Dutch phonenumber (free calling, no cost) because I live in NL, but you should look for such a number in your country. The man was very helpful, asked for my SN, IMEI and product ID and one day later he phoned bak with the unlock code
Hotline support, view our global hotlines. Google on these sentences on the Huawei general pages. I wish you succes. Jos

Yes, many users have reported that rooting through Kingroot bricked their device, but it worked like a charm for me... Anyways, if you want to do via kingroot way, please understand every risk...

Root/Updates/Rebranding/Unbricking - Official FunkyHuawei Support Thread for Mate 9

This is the official FunkyHuawei support thread.
FunkyHuawei is a (mostly) paid service which allows you to do the following:
1. Install the latest system software, even before it's released by OTA.
2. Install beta/prerelease system software, without needing to be a beta tester.
3. Recover a bricked phone.
4. Rebranding / Change the region of your phone (China -> Europe, for example, to get Google and so on.)
5. Root your EMUI 8 phone, even with stock recovery (This feature is free)
Except for rooting, all of these features are supported even if you cannot unlock your phone's bootloader.
We are pleased to announce FHUnbrickFlashTool -- You can now repair any recent Huawei phone via fastboot, even if you cannot access eRecovery or boot the phone! Even if it doesn't show the Huawei logo, as long as you can get a fastboot connection to your computer, you can recover the phone! Google FHUnbrickFlashTool or check FunkyHuawei's reddit for details.
To find FunkyHuawei, please Google it. Or you can find a link to the service within the following XDA Portal article.
https://www.xda-developers.com/android-oreo-emui-6-huawei-mate-9/
In cooperation with XDA, FunkyHuawei is offering a free credit to Recognized Developers and Recognized Contributers on XDA.
Please PM me for more details.
We will continue posting in this thread with updates regarding new software versions and releases regarding this device.
We will also be monitoring it so we can help anyone who has issues.
For device-specific information, please see the next post.
Mate 9 Device-Specific Information
The Mate 9 now has a relatively mature community with many methods to do many things.
However, there are still some things only possible with FunkyHuawei, so it would be most useful for:
1. Installing updates, especially on bootloader-locked devices, even if the update is not approved by Huawei for your device.
2. Rebranding bootloader-locked devices.
3. Restoring bricked devices.
Note that even though the Mate 10 Root tool is designed for and publicized as being for the Mate 10, it works perfectly on the Mate 9 running Android O betas.
This tool is FREE, and might be easier than installing TWRP and rooting that way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does FunkyHuawei cost?
A: You need to buy credits on the FunkyHuawei website. The price per credit varies depending on the number of credits you buy. Different operations cost different amounts of credits. However, the Root feature of the Mate 10 tool is free, and as mentioned above, Recognized Developers/Contributors of XDA can ask for a free credit.
Q: My phone is bootloader locked, and FRP locked. My bootloader unlock code dosen't work. It won't boot. eRecovery doesn't work. Can you help?
A: Yes. With the Mate 10 this is now a common situation. Contact FunkyHuawei for help in this situation. We'll need to access your computer remotely and the procedure is a little bit complicated, but the phone can be unbricked.
Q: I can't get my bootloader unlock code/don't want to unlock my bootloader, but I want to change my phone to something other than Chinese. Can you help?
A: Yes. Our new FunkyHuawei Rebrand Tool works on ALL recent Huawei phones, to rebrand them to another region even when the bootloader is locked.
Q: I'm not seeing the latest version listed on FunkyHuawei or elsewhere as an OTA. Why not?
A: Huawei has a very odd and unpredictable way of rolling out OTA updates. You can use FunkyHuawei to install the new version immediately, or can wait for the update to be rolled out. It might be a month or more after release until the update reaches your device from Huawei directly. We have no idea why.
Q: Why isn't FunkyHuawei free?
A: Because many of FunkyHuawei's features cost FunkyHuawei money to provide. Features that don't cost FunkyHuawei money to provide, like rooting the Mate 10 or our TWRP build for Mate 9/Oreo, for example, are generally made available for free. There are also bills to pay, kids to put through school, and so on.
Q: I noticed FunkyHuawei in an XDA Portal article!
A: FunkyHuawei loves XDA, and is cooperating with them as much as possible. Recognized Developers and Contributors on the XDA forums are welcome to claim a free credit from FunkyHuawei as well.
Q: I have a different question.
A: This is what this thread is for! Post away!
I am surprised how you always have the audacity to constantly advertise your paid services on here even though most of the community is obviously bothered by it.
Advertising your products is against the rules of XDA. You're just getting away with it nowadays because you're doing it indirectly. But you're not fooling anyone and we all know what you're doing. Just stop. It's annoying.
New Android O Build: MHA-L29 8.0.0.329(C432) now available for MHA-L29 European branding.
Can be installed with eRecovery on top of any Android O beta.
Someone report this

It is currently allowed for commercial organizations to post "support" threads so long as they don't post links to their site, behave in a spammy way or post things that are clearly not of interest or use to our users or our purpose as a site. This is of use as the info is of direct relevance and use to users. The information here is not really any more than we'd allow in a "Support" thread.
So, it's within the rule, he is providing support, he's not linking out of XDA. As with any other support thread, if for any reason it were to be abused then the article would be pulled and the thread closed.

I never said his post broke any of the rules. I do realize that it does not. If it was, I would have reported it.
I am not sure if you're a Mate 9 user, but if you do spend a lot of time on the Mate 9 forums you'd see how he is always talking about his website and how he used it to do X and Y. About how it is a solution to bricked phones and whatsoever. It is not that hard to see that he is indeed indirectly advertising for his service (and I do realize there might be no rules against that). But yeah. It is just annoying how he is always on about his website. Especially considering that the user was previously temporary banned for putting his paid service on here.

No problem. The post wasn't completely directed at you. We'd already received reports from other members so I wanted to explain to all; your post just happened to be readily available to reply to.
I understand your point and we've clarified with him what is and isn't allowed. He's promised to tone it down and to limit it to his support threads. So, as we do with all members of the community who want to contribute, let's give him the benefit of the doubt and let this thread get back on topic.

While I generally don't approve of advertising here on xda, I have to say that Funky Huawei with their unbrick tool are a life saver. As long as you can get into fastboot mode this little tool can rescue your phone. It costs a little money for their "credits" but when it comes to either having a $400 paperweight or having a working phone the process is worth it.

Hate to agree, while I don't like how they operate I have used them to save a device or two because I messed up. The eRecovery with DNS is brilliant and pretty much idiot (me) proof.

L09 is the single sim version and L29 is the dual SIM version, rebranding is not going to change the model.

Same here, this was the first and hopefully last time, if it wasn't for a corrupt system.img backup that I had I wouldn't have had to use their unlock tool, next time I flash a custom system I'm going to make damn sure my backup is flashable and not going to brick this beast

How to unlock P9 lite in 2019?

Hello, i have received used P9 lite some days ago and i would like to unlock bootloader, custom roms etc.
Is there any free option to unlock my device?
If you know where to get DC unlocker cracked tell me
Which paid option is recommended nowadays? DC for $4.5 is ok.
It seems I was hacked and rooted... As I understand, some kind of spyware found its home at /cust/hw/... Service center offers reset my phone for $5, but I'm not sure they really understand difference between Factory reset and full firmware update (Cambodia, yep). So DC is looking valuable choice. But... Since device was probably unlocked and probably rooted/unrooted, will I get a root without a headache?..
(Still not really understand all the details about rooting process, despite 2 weeks diving into the Android world.)

Help me get the unlock code

I need to get the bootloader unlock code please, if someone can help me please
