Looking forward to Android Q Testing - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

One of the main reasons I wanted a Pixel was to gain access to beta testing Android software. I've always enjoyed beta testing, no matter what the subject. I've been a tester for Windows 10, Roku software, a few Linux distros and a lot of the apps I use currently on my phone.
I had purchased this phone at the beginning of this year, just in time to install Android P, DP. I was honestly amazed on how well it ran. Now, I'm looking forward to Android Q and what that brings to the table.
I honestly haven't read too much as far as what's coming in Android Q. I was looking to maybe start a conversation here in anticipation of the beta approaching.

Tell us more about nightshots. Is the camera better now on the production unit?
Don't show night shots! Between that and the shipping and communications fiasco, Andy Rubin is already in hiding.
I've never had a phone that was good at taking night shots. I'm coming from the LG G6 and the night shots suck just as much as any other phone. Don't see what the big deal is.
Quick question. Can you check the display settings and see if there is a blue light filter? Or night light whichever they call it? Thanks!

The phone ships with stock Android 7.1.1
If you would look at the features within Android you'd know it would have that feature... Or you could google it.

Just an FYI, it appears there is no blue light filter on this phone. Someone who has the phone looked for it in the settings and it’s not there
Does anyone else have the ability to manually check for OTA updates? The feature seems to be missing..
Got mine today. All I can say is WOW!
As a die hard Nexus fan for years, Pixel didn't cut it for me. Essential feels like Nexus is back. Amazing phone.
Yeah, I am really enjoying this phone...the only things I wish it had were the fingerprint gestures and the night mode. Those are the only things I miss from my Pixel XL. Anyone know if the apk's for those are floating around? Would be nice to install like the Google HDR camera app which seemed to improve the camera a bit.
You can search Google for the camera app. It's also floating around the apps section under the essential phone forum

Nice troll post.
But, with the amount of kernel development going on behind the scenes in various threads, the second screen for AOSP project, monthly ROMs, the ability to update without losing root, and the many other things floating around the development section, I'm inclined to say you're wrong.
I don't agree that the device is dead, it's still popular and really is a good phone. It's fairly new and LG will keep it updated, so many will continue to use and customize it for a while.
But me personally, I can't wait for the Note 8!!! [emoji3]

OnePlus Pushing Out Fake Oreo Builds

Anyone read about this?
https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/7iydl8/oneplus_allegedly_kept_711_firmware_in_its_oreo/
A couple of Chinese developers found that one plus was still using a branch of 7.1.1HAL/firmware in Oreo OOS update. Users are complaining in the Chinese OP community. Peter Lau retorted: "What exactly is the core of Android 8.0?"
Update: Oneplus disabled Reply function(yes, the reply function) altogether in the Chinese Oneplus community! How about that. The company is seriously ****ED UP. I'm speechless.

Yes it's a shame. Also they refuse to include treble. Im so dissapointed. Devs will have to do much more work
I'm glad I waited. Seems like there are a lot of shortcuts behind the scenes in the software. This and the missing crypto libraries for HD YouTube etc.
How about this? True?
I don't get it? They did say they weren't going with treble, so why would the firmware change much between N and O?
I'm not defending them in any way, I just want to know why this is bad?
Well, its like using win7 drivers in win10. Calm down.
A lot of code of N still works in O so I dont know what the problem is.
Same here, I really don't See the problem

To be fair, the process to add treble when updating from 7 to 8 seems to be quite difficult. Good chance that making the update smooth for end users was too hard.
That said... they could have just shipped it with 8.0, but again, to be fair it was probably too tight of a timeline to get it ready vs just tweaking the oneplus5 7.0 build to work on the 5t.

I bought a Pixel with What supposed to be the real Oreo, but there was no creme filling. Fake!
Secondly, Android 7 to 8 with Trebble is do-able. Essential phone is in the process and I bet they will prove OnePlus's 6-month release and money making greed.

I just don't like the white. I hope substratum team can work there magic. I'm sure they will. As long as I can make it dark I can be happy.
Just for laughs... let's say this actually is the final design and look. It still goes right along with the rounded, colorful, flat, and simple Material Design that Google had implemented way back in 2014 for 5.0 Lollipop. So this argument of "copy" is invalid.
Also: Without Google there is no Android, and without Android there is no Substratum. Know your roots!

You do realize that a good portion or some of the elements are most likely placeholder elements, right? With a really early preview there are always going to be missing features, themes, etc. This is essentially an Alpha release, which means maybe 0.01 percent of users will ever see this version in person.
An example of a placeholder would be how Amazon deals with video game release dates for games that have no official release window at the time. They like to use the "December 31" with 20XX year as a placeholder until the game has an official release date. Does that mean every game comes out on December 31st of every year? No. Many companies use placeholder text, images, and even themes until the final version/product is ready. The final product may look similar to early builds, but there is a lot of time between early stages and consumer release. Expect some changes, tweaks, and other visual elements in later versions at the very least.
Just for laughs, let's say this is the final design and look. It still goes along with the rounded, colorful, flat, and simple Material Design that Google had implemented way back in 2014 for 5.0 Lollipop. So this argument of "copy" is invalid.

I realize it's the first. I didn't like O either. Thought Nougat was better. People just can't not like something. If the end product is anything close to this, it sucks in my opinion. And that's all it is my opinion. What I don't like you might love. And I remember the first preview of O. It didn't change much. Actually the preview was better. had more options.

I wish more people would think like you! Trying to make one centralized theme that fits everyone is not going to happen. Some like colorful, some like dark, some like rounded, some like squared. Everything is all about choice, personal preference, and opinion. Same goes for smartphones... trying to make a device that has the look, feel, and features that will appeal to everyone is next to impossible. There will always be someone who disagrees, doesn't like, or prefers something else. It's human nature, and part of what makes us an individual. :good:

What are we thinking guys? Are the developers going to support our skip this device? I hope work the low cost we can lure some of the devs from higher priced flagships but with the lower specs will they take the device seriously? Let me know what you think.

Of course it will. That's kind of a silly question. The x4 is getting support, and this phone already has far more appeal.
Usually the more popular budget style phones get a lot of dev support. I would be surprised if this one doesnt.

I tend to agree with you. It really brings back shades of the Nexus 5 with this price point. Also, VZW is not the sole carrier and BB along with others is selling it for basically $299 after credits / gift cards. The only 2 things that slightly bother me is the lack of waterproof and no wireless charging neither of which is a deal breaker. I'm curious what they look like so I'll head over to BB later. Now comes the question, will there be a Pixel 4a and what will that be like?
I was kinda bummed about wireless charging but I just put a wireless charging receiver on it from Amazon and it charges surprisingly fast.

I bit the bullet after your recommendation and bought one today. I always have 2 phones and two lines.. just because. I traded in my 5X and had a $125 store credit and got mine for about a buck fifty after rebate. My other car is a Benz. Lol. J/k I have a Pixel 3 in hand. Went to Best Buy today, took one look and feel of the 3a and bought it in the parking lot.
Awesome brother, yeah I have not regretted buying my 3a. I had the Pixel 3 when it first came out and sold it for a used Galaxy S9 and a OnePlus6T which were both better than the Pixel 3. There isnt anything that I miss from my Pixel 3 to this Pixel 3a,,,all of the good features are here. Plus with the addition of a wireless charging receiver from Amazon for 9 bucks I am all good LOL.
