For anyone who has just picked up a Moto G and plans to unlock their bootloader, unlock it before updating to 4.4.4. There is currently a bug with the unlock codes on the 4.4.4 bootloader and the workaround is a hassle. The issue isn't present on 4.4.2, you can update once your bootloader is unlocked.

The bootloader is the culprit.
Mine came with 4.4.3 and it has thus problem already.

The issue, when you receive the Motorola's code and enter it in the cmd get an error message. At least, that happened to me.
Hi! I bought the phone with the 4.4.2 update, and hurried him through the air to 4.4.4. And now I can not unlock the boot loader (incorrect password). Tried to go back to 4.4.2, and it does not work. When Motorola is the solution?

Thanks @Jdiesel87 for heads up. As you mentioned that there is a workaround , can you please point out or explain what it is , so that it will help the people who updated to 4.4.4 on first day itself..
Sure thing. In order to get the fix from Motorola you need to visit the thread on their forum at:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875?commentId=798955#798955
You will need to sign up for the Motorola Feedback Network under your account settings, register your device with your IMEI number, and opt in to receive emails from Motorola. Once you have done that post on the above thread alerting the moderators that you have completed those steps.
I can't comment on anything after that point as the Motorola beta program has a non-disclosure agreement but they will help you from there.

I got my moto g 2 days ago. model XT1033 dual sim india . When I got it the android version was 4.4.4 .. and I have just successfully unlocked the bootloader. ... bt.. im not able work any custom recoveries... I flashed many recoveries using fastboot commands, bt after selecting the recovery from fast boot list , the phone shows the bootlogo then a black screen with some random lines or something.. is this becoz of the bootloader issue ?

Guys I have unrooted my phone and installed nougat manually without ota update.. after that I downgraded to marshmallow and try to root again.. when I enter the command of unlock key it shows error.. it's showing invalid boot state
Can u guys plz help me asap..
Unless you provide more details to your problem, no one can help you dude.
How do you expect someone to help you without knowing your phone model, build number, method of rooting, files used, etc?

I am using Moto g4 plus bro..
I tried normal rooting only.. wer v get the unlock code frm Motorola
Getting am unlock code is for unlocking your bootloader, which in turn is the first step. This info isn't really specific.
If you provide more details, someone will be able to help.

Have you actually ever actively relocked the bootloader? Rooting and unlocking the bootloader are different things.
Also, take a look here:

Hi, I have a huge problem with my phone.
Recently I flashed the stock ROM in version 6.0 for my moto g4 play and I tried to do the updates. during the second update, my phone went out and this is the hard brick I was running on Android 7.1 before so I think there's an incompatibility beetween the bootloader and the OS, that's why my device is bricked
Using Blank Flash I was able to start my phone in fastboot mode. But this process locked my bootloader.
atm I am in fastboot mode with a locked bootloader and USB debug not activated, what can I do ? I can't flash anything...
Thanks
please I'm desperate. Is there nothing to do ?
Hey I was on the same boat, my moto G4 play was out of warranty and with just ₹300 they fixed the software. If you are from Kolkata then visit the Chadni service center, the guys are really helpful and cooperative. Now this moto G4 boots and works. That blank file that you flashed from the other thread is not correct for XT1602. I learnt this from the service center. Just take it to the service center and they will fix it up for you.

They say that they have to change some pieces of the phone whereas it's just a firmware problem, to make me pay more... At that price, I'd better buy a new phone !
Really, is there a way to re-unlock bootloader without using developers options ? or is there a way to flash a ROM without an unlocked bootloader ? Thanks
I read that it's possible to force device to go in edl mode and then flash the ROM, but I don't know how to go to this mode with this phone .
Thanks
I tried a few but was not able to.

If it says Sim is not Verizon then it's most probably locked
Dial *#0011# and check stats
Also check service menu code or Samsung phone info app from playstore to check lock status of your phone
If locked
Try using tool/apps like Samsung Firmware Tool,Z3x to unlock or check forum for unlock method

I don't think it has anything to do with a custom ROM it has more to do with EFS and CERT
I'm sure there are several ways of unlocking your device
1)you can turn to legit paid services
2)you can look up for applications that allow for unlocking Z3x,Octopus/Octoplus, Samsung Firmware Tool etc
3)you can look up for local hardware/software repair shops that offer unlocking for phone's (usually coz they have expensive box)
When you have finally run out of options
4)if in your country its legal/allowed to change your device IMEI then get a working cert/efs for N910V

whats the problem then ?? im Lost
The problem can be your device being locked, your only hope is local marketplace or using a tool yourself but most of these applications ship with box and that is very costly there are cracked versions too with loader but obviously I am not at liberty to provide them on xda ,the other issue is most of these applications with loader wont have support for N910V because I check the one I have and thats the latest one I could grab ill check Samsung Professional Tool for you as well if it has N910V in device list
