SM-J730GM/DS Daughters phone update - Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) Questions & Answers

Guys,
Feel like an idiot, my phones I update all the time but feel more at ease if it F****-up
SO I am looking for a guide for the SM-J730GM/DS I see other models and have no idea will it cause a problem.
She bought it from China or somewhere else don't know. But it is full of S*** and I just what a clean rom from somewhere.
So does it matter what model if it starts SM-J730XX?
and she lives in netherlands if that is important.

You should check the Custom ROM section. At the back of the phone, the exact model number is written. You can match that with the custom ROMs.

mine is a sim free phone so i could not login to look at the changelog
perhaps if yours is branded tmobile you could do so, and post the changelog here ?
there must be some change or why would they post it dated 15/03/10 ???

there is no changelog from htc's site. it's just a small "updated" t-mo uk ROM, still based on the very first 1.43 ROMs. i wont call it an update at all. FYI, this so called update has been made available in xda for a long time now. i've downloaded it and compared the Hash, and they are 100% identical.
omg!
if this is the update i've waited 3 months for then heads are gonna roll!
is it actually the exact same rom as before?
what the hell was the point in it?

It's not even an update. Its the exact same version number that I have on my original ROM T-Mobile HD2 - ROM Version:1.43.110.2.
And yes, I still have my original ROM. It works okay for what I do, and want to stick with official ROMs if possible. Maybe in the future if T-Mobile don't give a real update, or I hit serious issues, but for now I'd like to keep my warranty intact. I'm aware I can re-flash it easily back to the original ROM (even more so now that ROM is officially available to download) - however my concern is over times when I get a fault which means I cannot re-flash it.
i'm on the original t-mobile rom and find it suitable. the only real change ive made is to revert back to the windows messaging set up, not htc messages.
how many people on the original rom have had problems with HTC messaging?
The disclaimer says:
* This is a generic software update. Any additional software or settings provided by your mobile operator or company will be lost. If you require this customization, please contact your supplier first before upgrading.
This may 'unlock' t-mobile from their current position and allow them the HTC rom upgrade path.
Has anyone tried this?

Interesting point, however I suspect it's a standard disclaimer they put onto their ROM downloads. Would be interesting though for someone to confirm?
Well, someone try and download it using their S/N and try flashing. Worst that happens is it says 'Incorrect Vendor ID'

ANy Help HEre....
At least we now have an official T-Mobile ROM we can revert to if we ever need to take the phone back.
I know they tend not to bother if you install other ROMs, but nice to have it as a fallback option.
*sigh*
Goldcard here we come... Interesting that on t-mo's own forum thread
they haven't actually announced the availability of this yet (even though they must be able to see their own customers fuming away...)
support.t-mobile.co.uk/discussions/index?page=forums&topic=801038058f61be601258e88860f007fca&messageit.offset=70
(can't post the link, so you'll have to cut and paste..)
I don't even want to think what the reaction on there is going to be once they actually announce it.
Ah, no, they'll mark it as solved, and no-one will be able to post! Good stuff, eh?
I tried it just incase it was generic but that was a a massive waste of time, as far as I can see this rom is identical to the factory version.

Flashing firmware asian to european- for ppl who have flashed

Hey guys in my earlier thread some ppl told me that i could update from asian firmware to european firmware. I would like to knw if there would be any problems by doing that, and would like to know ur experiece after flashing.. Thanx for ur replies. I don mind waiting an extra month for asian firmware release if u feel flashing can be problematic, if not i'll b happy to flash.
Ps: I knw a thread like this is available but there are no conclusive answers there. Thanx.
I like to know too. I hope no issue here other than losing the Asian keyboards. I assume one could still get a third party keyboard for say, chinese characters input.
Ya i recieved a reply in hardware zone forum, ppl have upgraded their firmwares from dd or dx to xx, xw (european). No problems were found, infact performance increased a little bit. One of the guys told me not to update cause firmwares released in europe tend to be buggy like beta versions, only final versions are released in asia and other places thats why updates are few. So if i were u i'd wait for firmware to release in my region.. Wat's u take on this? Do u still wanna flash ur phone or do u wanna wait a month extra......
I personally haven't had any issues with the euro fw to speak of. Like doomsdaycs mentioned I definitely experienced performance increase and even more once i installed the modaco rom. I ran the latest JG3 for a few days and it was great then i wanted the modaco rom so I reflashed with JG1 and it's still had no problems. Hope that helps...

That's utter rubbish.
Went from APAC to Euro firmwares, and never looked back.
Let me ask you guys who have gone over to the European firmware a few questions:
1) Has it fixed the 3G/wifi connection problem? (I hope you do not dispute that there is problem )
2) Has the lags/pause gone away? Or just minimized?
3) Has your GPS started to work accurately yet?
4) Does your email still takes ages to load? Or just become less slow?
5) Does the music playing still pause/freeze once in a while?
6) Anyone still able to install stuffs like Chinese keyboards from the Android market place after adopting the Europe firmware?
7) Do you have problem with the market place like what these people say?

Thanks for sharing.
Let me ask you guys who have gone over to the European firmware a few questions:
1) Has it fixed the 3G/wifi connection problem? (I hope you do not dispute that there is problem )
Answer: You need to create a new APN in order to use the 3G network. As for WIFI.. I am able to connect to any WIFI as long as I have the password.
2) Has the lags/pause gone away? Or just minimized?
Answer: Kinda but you will still experience it even with the JG5 firmware.. rumor has it that samsung will release an official fix for this on the end of july but there is no official word from samsung.. all we can do is cross our fingers and hope or best alternative.. use modaco's fix.
3) Has your GPS started to work accurately yet?
Answer: Yup, compared to the stock firmware, it is able to identify my location within a 5 meter radius.
** upgrade to the latest google maps version.
4) Does your email still takes ages to load? Or just become less slow?
Answer: Google.. first time setup.. yes. But now, depending on your location and signal strength.. takes about 8 - 15 seconds.. longer with 2 bars on my phone.. about 30 seconds or so. [GMAIL]
5) Does the music playing still pause/freeze once in a while?
Answer: When I am playing Let's Golf with very low volume then listening to music using the default player at level 6 - 7 volume. I do experience it sometime..
6) Anyone still able to install stuffs like Chinese keyboards from the Android market place after adopting the Europe firmware?
Answer: I am able to install Google Pinyin.. the qwerty keyboard still shows ABC but when you press each letter.. it will show the chinese character equivalent.
7) Do you have problem with the market place like what these people say?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7232231#post7232231
Answer: Weird case, never experienced that issue on my SGS after doing 3 firmware upgrades.
And no, I haven't rooted my phone yet.. hoping to hear from samsung by the month's end to know if they finally release a firmware fix for the memory transfer issue [NAND].

I second that.
The ASIAN version to be honest.. is full of crap from the TELCO's which renders the phone perform slower.. and I'd like to add that, my phone starts and loads faster now without the singtel crap.
Thank you M3keni. I'm glad it looks so positive.

You are welcome bro.
Disclaimer though.. other users may have a different take on my experience with my SGS.. hehehe.
..seriously, samsung should fix the NAND issue with an update firmware soon.
..but we have hardworking developers to go to for MODS.. iLike!
Before you decide and buy the SGS, visit your nearest telco showroom to try and feel the phone. Will help in your decision.
Have a good weekend!
Thanx for the info i'll be flashing madoco rom too.. cheers..
I'm waiting for the Froyo that's supposedly 3 times faster than iPhone 3GS. As it is now, it is a lot slower than even iPhone 3G. The black screen and long pauses is beginning to get to me.
I'm hesitant to root now as I'm uncertain about the hardware aspect of GPS, and my fear that the process might not be fully reversible, hence voiding the warranty potentially.
i have a question that how to upgrade the firmware from Asian to EUR use kies without root??????
i want to change that but have no idea, thx
yes please, even I need to know how to flash my Singtel FW to the eu version like the friends above mentioned. Mainly I want to do this without rooting...!!
And once after upgrading, will it allow me to upgrade to froyo when it is officially released!!! via Kies or OTA.

Can you suggest the fw number of the official euro firmware that you are using now so I can install as well.
No problem at all dude.
Flashed from DDJF3 to XWJG1 (Indian to some European country)... JF3 had major issues... JG1 is good... not great though. Most of the problems of the stock firmware were resolved by Modaco's Custom ROM... try it out!
You guys should give the new firmware JM1 or JM2 a twirl. The difference is night and day...no joke..and that's before root and any modifications.
@netboyhk I initially used this as my starting point http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpWcM44On88
Note that in the video he says it HAS to be on a specific com port....ignore that part. It's all relative to how many usb ports u have and how many devices plugged in etc etc. From my experiences it's REALLY hard to brick this phone but your mileage may vary
I think you mean JM1 and JM2 - unless Samsung's moving faster on firmware than I thought...

[Q] htc desire z is more laggy/slow than the old desire?

Hi all..my opinion, the old desire is more smooth and faster than DZ. Is it only me, or does anyone else have the same opinion? I installed an app to monitor cpu usage. The graph indicator jumps to 100% eventhough I did not open other tasks, maybe just background processess. Can anyone share their opinion here? Thank you in advance.
This is my third HTC Sense phone now, having owned a hero, desire and now the desire Z, and I can say this is the quickest and most lag free stock rom I have ever used, by a long long way.
However if your really having issues then root and install a custom rom, VillainRomz will be out very soon which is based on stock sense and is fantastically fast.
Thanks for the reply..i owned a deesire before, and sold it to get this..but really i feel DZ is laggy compare to my old desire, even with stock rom..i bought this second hands from another person, he claimed that this is just a week old but he want to resell it to get a desire hd. Somehow i doubt if this is a genuine htc phone. This phone is "made in China". Got htc factory in china? My old desire made in Taiwan. How can i verify this? Can i use the IMEI num to check it? Any method to check the actual age of this phone? Really need help here.
I think DesireZ is the smoothiest I ever had, even compared with the lagfixed I9000.
I know there is a website which you can input IMEI and it can tell you the where does it come from. I forgot the site address but I will check and update to you later.
About your laggy DZ. I think the ex-owner has done something wrong on it. Have you ever tried to back to factory reset and see if it still lags?

My DZ is "Made in Taiwan".
Thanks for the reply mate, really appreciate it. i tried the link, the result came out:
Note: This IMEI number seems to be correct, but we do not have any information on this specific handset. Please add the missing information below.
Then there was boxes to fill in for the brand and phone model, and network type. but after i added the informations, then click the button "ADD", evrything just dissappear, back to the page before i inserted the IMEI num.
does this means my DZ is not genuine?
feeling down.
Mine's made in China too, and was incredibly laggy by default. I assume the difference is quite simple: is yours the Asia/Pacific model? Mine is too.
It's likely that HTC have multiple factories, and ours came from one in China. Regardless, the stock ROM on it had a whole tonne of **** I didn't want, and the phone didn't need - including Starhub TV, which was laughable.
Since flashing the Villision ROM the phone has been much, *much* better. It's no longer crashing 3+ times a day, it's no longer laggy, and all that unremoveable bloat is gone.
I suspect the hardware is fine; the default, integrated Asia/Pacific ROM is ****house however.
thanks nzfrio. its enlighting to know other ppl got the same issue. yes, mine is asia/pacific model (Singapore to be exact). So got HTC factory in china? so thats mean my DZ i genuine? if that so, its the best news i heard today. thanks mate.
so i guess the culprit is the stock rom itself. have to search for a good rom then. i will appreciate if anyone can suggest a good rom here, other than villian rom suggested by Lennyuk above. but i will give villian rom a go first.. hope this will solve my problem..

Mine's the Singaporean one too, so I guess we have the same model . I can't say for sure if there's an HTC factory in China, but I'd be amazed if there wasn't (especially considering they're a Chinese company - I can't post an outside link yet, but you can check Wikipedia) - why go to all the trouble of producing a replica *this* accurate, and then **** it up with an obvious label on the back ? So yeah, I'd be stunned if they were imitation phones .
The Villision ROM is pretty good; it's fast, and it's nice to use. The only thing you should be wary of is that by default, your keymap will be messed up and the capacitive keys won't work. This is due to the keymap for our phones not being in that ROM (it's based on the G2 AOSP ROM); you can flash a small update to get them working . See the thread on it in the Desire Z Development forum for more info; someone posted the update in there.
Other than that, Cyanogen will be slick when it's out I'm sure; I'm going to wait for the final release and see how easy it is on the battery before trying it out though! I'm also hoping we get a MIUI port sometime in the future.

HTC are a Taiwanese company. I think they'd be kind of upset to be called Chinese, given the relations between Taiwan and China.

There's a suggestion that the latest batch of phones (e.g. Vodafone UK-branded ones, and Asian phones) have a different serial number range and perhaps have been changed somehow that makes the current permanent rooting not work (though temp root should still work).
Work is ongoing on this, so currently we don't know for sure what the details are.

I used the RAGE method, but I would recommend caution; the phone does behave erratically while you're typing the commands in (acore crashes repeatedly) which is pretty disconcerting. Just make sure you have the latest VISIONary .
i feel my phone is considerably slower than my brother's 'normal' desire. especially scrolling through the app drawer.
Mine is made in China (so it says on the back of the box) and on that IMEI check website it says "Note: This IMEI number might to be correct, but it is impossible to get this confirmed."
ALSO i CANNOT get permanent root using rage or Visionary

I am a Hong Kongnese but immigrated to Taiwan for 15 years than came back to HK 3 years ago and currently living in Mainland China. So, you're right. Taiwan people don't usually call themselves Mainland Chinese, but will call Taiwanese. Anyway, it's a never ending political issue between these 2 countries.....
Despite of that. Can anyone in the forum recommend me a Cyanogen ROM which can use on DZ and can enlarge the font size. Everything on DZ are good except this annoying small font which I have to use a magnifier to read the contents all the time......tragedy!

[Q] Please Help! New S5 BRICKED!!

1.) Rooted S5 900V (Verizon Model) using towel root.
2.) Installed Safestrap Recovery.
All this went perfectly fine..
I forget exactly which ROM i tried to install but it boot looped my phone.
I need to know which ROMs i can use and which ones that i CANNOT,
Can i only use certain ROMs based off of which recovery i've installed?
What is ADB Side Load?
I want to ask all of these questions, no matter how noobish, so that i can write every single one of these things down in lamens terms for the average (or slightly below average) user.
If we understood what half of these options meant and would do we could do this stuff yourself and leave you guys alone so you can develop stuff for my Verizon S5 !!! lol
Not only that, but most of these ROM's come with ZERO instructions on how to install them properly. I mean i understand that if your flashing then you should have an underlying knowledge of what you doing but COME ON!!! BE smart about it. You take all that time to develop a decent ROM but don't but info on how to install it properly. WTF is the deal with that?
Also... Can i use Odin309 within Linux via Wine? I am trying to install the firmware i got from Sam's.
If you have a verizon S5, (SM-G900V) then you can only flash a rom, made by the devs here, for the 900V. If you try to flash a variants S5 rom, your phone will brick.
I always recommend that before somone flashes anything to their phone or tablet to do research on the subject. Read, and reread everything. Double check. Make sure you have everything you need.
Also, pretty much all of the devs have install instructions for their work in our phones dev section.

1.) Rooted S5 900V (Verizon Model) using towel root.
2.) Installed Safestrap Recovery.
All this went perfectly fine..
I forget exactly which ROM i tried to install but it boot looped my phone.
I need to know which ROMs i can use and which ones that i CANNOT,
You can only use ROMs labeled for the retail Verizon S5. Not spring, tmobile.. etc.. Verizon.
Can i only use certain ROMs based off of which recovery i've installed?
As of now, you can only use safestrap. Any of the current ROMs can be flashed by our current safestrap
What is ADB Side Load?
ADB Sideload
Most? That's a bit harsh. Last I checked, most (if not all) of the ROM devs (including myself) provide thorough instructions. There is no "WTF deal".
Also... Can i use Odin309 within Linux via Wine? I am trying to install the firmware i got from Sam's.
Simple answer: no. Don't take the risk to your device.

No offense meant, but based on the questions you've asked I suggest you do more research before flashing anything on your phone.
The ROMs listed in this forum have pretty good install instruction for anyone who has a basic knowledge of what they are doing (err go the comment about doing more research).
Did you make a backup before you flashed the ROM you can't even remember the name of? What slot did you flash the ROM to?
It would be helpful if you could tell us what ROM you tried to flash and where you found it.
Always make a backup of your stock rom before flashing anything.
Thanks

I guess what i meant to say is that some information is just hard to locate. They keep the fancy art easy to see but the installation instructions you actually have to search for. I love the DEV's for there work, TRUST ME. Android wouldn't be Android without you guys.
I would like to get more involved in the XDA and AndroidForums to make a one stop shop for ALL of the popular devices. Basically, just gather up all pertinent information (after receiving permission from the dev) and put it in one nice and easy spot to read.

Yes. That is an excellent example of what i am wanting to do and I actually used it when i started reading up on my S5.The only thing is that it does not specify the Verizon 900V. So someone with any model phone could read that and brick their phone.
But i will want to go in to more detail such as exactly what the "NE9" is.. Is it an update? Firmware? What?
Regardless, i just want to add another page that has information that one that already exists, such as that one, may be missing.
There is WAY too much information about our phones to say that one page covers every single aspect of it.
I'm just wanting to help clearly state the information thats already out there. Alot of these people are already busy and cannot give 110% towards there pages.

I think we both know that one carriers phone could have compatible root/roms for others carrier's phones. Specifying the model name i would think would be the most appropriate way. You have to realize not everyone has been doing this for as long as you and does not necessarily have a keen eye for such things..
There is absolutely nothing wrong with over explaining things.
With that being said, i do believe that post is an extremely helpful page.
But discussing whether or not the page has enough information is not worth debating over.
When i find time to do my own then we can have this discussion.
I mentioned i wasn't exactly sure how i boot looped my. Still don't because I can't remember for the life of me which ROM it was! I thought i book marked it... Whichever one it was, it wanted me to flash 3-4 different zips once in SafeStrap. First ZIP is when the boot loop occuured.
ANYWAY...
I installed SafeStrap using the instructions found HERE.
I wanted to install THIS ONE because it had the KTweaker which is totally awesome toplay with but i dont think my 900-V allows sit.\\
BUT:
I want as many people's opinion as possible on this (I will create a separate thread). I have T-Mobile but was old a Verizon Phone. I have issues with dropped calls, slow speeds, among others. I want to know if this is legal.
Any and all are welcome to respond as i feel they should pay for making me pay $60 fora cab (Oneway) and then selling me a crap phone. Plus the wall charger didn't work. The data cable did so at least i had another wall charger.
In Case your Wondering... yes i do have the receipt.
THE BEST PART IS: T-Mobile said they've never heard of them when i called and gave them the address off of the receipt.
Honestly, i would like to go in there and walk out with another S5, maybe even with this one paid off, lol. But PLEASE ALL OPINIONS ARE WELCOME.

You need to seriously stop and do a lot more reading before you try anything else with your phone. The ROM you linked above that you said you want to flash is for the International version of the Galaxy S5 and will hard brick your phone. The forum where that ROM is posted (Samsung Galaxy S5) is for the International version. The US variants of the S5 are broken down by carrier. Hence this is the Verizon Galaxy S5 forum. You bought your phone from some fly-by-night place, and it turned out to be a Verizon variant when you needed a T-Mobile variant.
If you are going to keep the Verizon variant you bought and use it on T-Mobile, you will only get Edge speeds through T-Mobile and never get 4G speeds. It is legal to use a Verizon phone on T-Mobile's network, it just won't work as well as you have already experienced. You need to change the APNs on your phone to get the best performance you can on T-Mobile. But it's still not going to be as good as using the T-Mobile variant on the T-Mobile network. If you went into that store and specifically asked for a T-Mobile Galaxy S5 and they sold you a Verizon variant, they would have a problem. If you went into the store and simply bought the cheapest S5 they had without telling them you needed a T-Mobile variant, then that is completely legal on their part. You don't need to create a separate thread to get everyone's opinions on the legality of your purchase. What I said above pretty much sums it up.
Also, if you are planning on keeping the Verizon variant and want to flash a ROM through safestrap, the ROM you want to flash has to be of the same build as the current build on your phone. So if your S5 is on NHA, you should only flash an NHA based ROM in safestrap. Or if you phone is on NI2, an NI2 based ROM. So letting everyone know which build your phone currently has will help us let you know which ROMs are safe to flash on your phone.
Sorry if all of this comes across as harsh, but I'm trying to help prevent you from turning your phone into a useless paperweight. You seem very confused by a lot of the information found here in the forums, and that is a very good time to slow down, take your time, and make sure you understand what you are doing at every step.

ALL of this information can be confusing and I doubt anyway one will deny that fact. The MAIN point is that i know how to fix it, right? This is why I eventually want to make a straight-forward thread about how to do things to which phone properly.
People learn from their mistakes.
I have been learning more and more as i go along but the fact i have T-Mobile service but a Verizon phone just added to the confusion.
Secondly i went in to a T-Mobile Store, so of course i wanted a T-Mobile phone, not a Verizon one. See, everyone makes stupid mistakes and misinterprets things

I didn't make a stupid mistake and misinterpret anything. Please show me where in your previous posts you wrote you went to a T-Mobile store. The only thing you wrote was you had the receipt and T-Mobile never heard of the store. Logical to assume you didn't go to a T-Mobile store from that description.

OK Your right, i didn't meantion it. You feel like your testosterone levels have increase now? Jesus.
From the moment you've replied to my posts you've had an attitude that is barely detectable.
Thanks for your help but you need to get out more and learn some people skills, dude. ****.
Look dude, we get it. You went and bought a new toy and couldnt wait to play with it. We're all guilty of that at some point. But blaming your mistakes on someone else, like when you blame the devs for not being straight forward with their roms, although with every example you have given here they really have been, all you need to do is read their posts, you'll get what your getting now. The only one you have to blame here is yourself. For not researching what you have first and just jumping into flashing a rom that was not developed for the phone you actually have. We tried to help you out and point you in the right direction but you decided to be the one with the attitude. Not landshark or my self. I think before you shell out advice on leaening people skills to someone else, you might want to practice what you preach first.

Ouch! Did I Totally Buy the WRONG Note?

Bought a N-910S. That's what's floating around these parts, was a good deal, didn't think much of it.
But after the usual trip to XDA to find a good debloated, fancified Touchwiz based latest and greatest, I come to see ....
Not much of anything.
It's all 910C, 910H, whatever, but no 910S. Yikes. Yikes?!
What gives? Googled, searched, read, can't figure it out. No love for the 910S? Do I need to open my living room window super wide and throw this thing as far as I can? What will happen to the 5.1 update, and me-never-ever-getting-it?
Omg. Stop me from going crazy right now. Shed some light on this totally human life existential drama question.

Surely you jest. I would rather have the S version than the H version. At least you get LTE unlike me with my H version.
Well ... no LTE-A on any of the prepaid carriers here.
What about ROMs? Does nobody know? I quietly wonder if ROMs from any other 910x might work but not finding answers via search.

The N910S is the equivanlent of the N910F in South Korea. There's not much info about it in internet, they seem to be the same device hardware-wise. They both use the same SoC and Modem so maybe N910F roms are cross-compatible with your device (They MAY be compatible or may not, If you want to use a N910F rom, do It at your own risk. Remember that a different rom in a non-compatible device would result in a hardbrick so be carefull). Download a N910F custom rom, delete the "modem" folder and flash it to your device via CWM, it may work.

Good one appreciate the insight. Though... worried about hard brick.
They have to be selling millions of these 910s. This one came straight from Korea, s/l must be a big market. Odd that there'd be no demand and supply of ROM goodness, yea?
