*RESOLVED* OTA - TWRP Didn't Stick - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

RESOLUTION:
- Installed the TWRP installer, and re-flashed 9.0.5 as recommended.
- TWRP sticks fine now and no data loss.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unlocked the bootloader out of the box 6T installed Magisk-v17.1 and all was fine. Then I took the over the air update to Oxygen 9.0.5. Continued rebuilding my phone. A few days later I went to install something in recovery and the phone rebooted to the stock recovery (not TWRP). I fast booted twrp-fajita-3.2.3-1.img and noticed that all my folders seem to be encrypted? (see attached).
OK so I did something wrong after the OTA (maybe I should have not done that).
Question, is there any way to get a working TWRP to stick as my recovery without wiping my phone and starting over?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I didn't think you could take an OTA with an unlocked bootloader? Maybe that was the reason? I would fastboot flash the stock 9.0.5 images. You can get TWRP to stick....but we don't have decryption yet so prior to going into TWRP you'll have to remove all security unlocks.

I'm curious about this also.

You can it just flashes the full rom instead of the ota update. You'll lose root and twrp in the process

Thanks... Flashing 9.0.5 will wipe the data, yes? Was hoping to avoid that.

Sorry for the ignorance here, googling, it seems you mean to turn off my password on the phone. Again this means losing all my saved fingerprints?
I have a work around for now of always booting to TWRP from fastboot (connected to PC) then mounting a USB drive. Just loses convenience when always needing the computer.
Thx

You can flash 9.0.5 without wiping the data.. just remove -w from flash-all.bat

Installed the TWRP installer, and re-flashed 9.0.5 as recommended.
TWRP sticks fine now and no data loss. :good:
Until we get decryption, I will just keep using my USB-C thumb drive when flashing/backing up.
Thanks Guys.

That's what I do.
Boot with TWRP then install zips from my OTG Flash Drive.

TWRP cannot decrypt after March security update

Hello, for the first time I used Flashfire to update my phone to the latest security update. This did install the system properly, but now if I try to boot into TWRP it will ask for my password to decrypt. I have tried entering both my Google password and my PIN key and neither are accepted. I have also tried changing my PIN key in the Android system settings but this still does not allow TWRP to decrypt my data. Am I missing something?
Same issue! I don't want to factory reset....
Edit: For now, I just flashed my kernel and SuperSU through the USB-OTG feature in TWRP... Fine for the moment.
Having the same issue as well. I updated to MHC19I through fastboot and everything went well. Installed TWRP 3.0.0 and it installed without any problems, but when I attempted to decrypt with my pattern it doesn't work. Booting to Android after decrypting it with the pattern works fine though. I wonder if this is just a TWRP issue?
I am having this same issue as well. However, I have noticed that whenever I boot into the system then try to go back into TWRP recovery it appears that the recovery is missing. The only way I have found to get back into recovery is to re-flash through fastboot.

When you flash a boot and system image, if you dont root and patch it with SuperSU, the moment you reboot to android, it will replace recovery. Thats why after flashing is important to boot straight into TWRP, flash the SUperSU zip to patch and root and it wont revert it
But i am on the same boat... went to 19I version... saw the password message from TWRP... i even tried back 29V and took off security, reflashed 19I and still... So i figured it was TWRP needing update... So i flashed 29V and will wait a day or so

So, if you look over at the TWRP thread it is mentioned that it is possible to sideload SuperSU as well as kernels. I was able to do this just fine myself. I think TWRP just needs to be updated by the dev.
I can confirm I have Root access (Flashed SuperSU v2.68 zip) via OTG. Also flashed Xposed Framework v80 and ElementalX Kernel via the same method. I had to download v1.14 zip manually to my OTG as the auto flash method via ElementalX Kernel Manager saves the downloaded zip file to Data and TWRP has no access to it. Bit annoying
What's worse is that TWRP doesn't save any of its' own settings (Time Zone, Haptic Feedback, Display Brightness etc). Guessing this would've normally been saved on Data partition as well. So everytime you boot into recovery, its' like the first time you flashed TWRP Anyway, all working well now and I didn't have to wipe anything.
Confirmed that after the mhc19i TWRP can't decrypt.
adb sideloaded twrp again(for fun), supersu, francokernel v12.
Just getting a ton of app crashes now. Might need to format system and start over :-/
*edit* was able to transfer my /sdcard/ to computer while apps were crashing.
Rebooted to fastboot and did as follows
fastboot update -w image-angler-mhc19i.zip to format everything and start over.
fastboot flash recovery twrp-angler-3.0.0.0.img
reboot to recovery
Enable twrp to write to system
adb sideload franco kernel r12 and supersu
Now everything is decrypted (i have nothing to hide), I ahve root, I have kernel I want, and TWRP is happy because it doesnt' have to decrypt anything
I use WugFresh NRT to root my phone. I unrooted it this morning to get the OTA March update. Everything went fine until I tried to reroot. I can't get past the TWRP screen asking for a password. How can I reroot without TWRP or will this encryption problem always crop up? I do not want to factory reset.
Hey Guys, on Reddit a user suggested flashing the previous builds Vendor image. That should allow twrp decrypt.

TWRP 3.0 works as normal if you are already decrypted. The issue, which is in the process of being resolved, only pertains to people using encryption.

TWRP 3.0.0-1 is out now. The issue is fixed. You can download from here: https://dl.twrp.me/angler/

Thanks for posting this info - saved me a headache updating CM today!

Oneplus 5 hardstuck bootloop. Please help me out, I've tried everything!

Firstly, my phone isn't hard-bricked. I'm able to load different versions of the TWRP recovery and access Fastboot without any problems. I'm also pretty comfortable using adb to push, sideload, access fastboot, recovery , etc. so please feel free to throw out any suggestions that might help me resolve my issue. (Note:I'm unable to find the stock recovery on OnePlus's support page anymore, I recall they always had the option to download the stock recovery just below the download option for the stock ROM, so I haven't been able to try sideloading after formatting with the stock recovery.)
My OnePlus 5 was running stock Oreo and I'd been meaning to upgrade to Lineage 16.0 (Pie) or any other Pie ROM really. I booted into TWRP (3.2.3-0 - Oreo firmware) and wiped everything other than USB storage and formatted data too as my previous Oreo installation was encrypted. Then, I downloaded codeworkxx's 9.0.3 firmware for OnePlus 5 and pushed it to my phone using adb. I flashed the firmware successfully, rebooted into Bootloader/fastboot; and flashed the Android Pie version of TWRP recovery ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/cheeseburgerdumplings/files/16.0/cheeseburger/ ) and was able to successfully boot back into the recovery. Since then, I've tried to flash multiple different Pie ROMs (Pixel Experience, Lineage 16.0, stock OOS official build - 9.0.3 , Beta OOS build OpenBeta26) (clean flashing always) but always ended up with a bootloop with the boot animations in all the ROMs. I've even tried flashing them with Magisk-v18.0 but that doesn't help either. I've waited for 15 min with each boot for the different ROM's (ending up in bootloops) and on rebooting back to TWRP, I've always found that irrespective of ROMs, the only folder that's created in Internal Storage is 'obb' and it is an empty folder. I've even tried sideloading OOS 9.0.3 (official build) via TWRP and that still ends up in a bootloop with the obb folder in Internal Storage being the only thing created. Also, flashing the boot.img recovery in the stock ROM zip files leads to a blank screen with a white LED that tries to install Qualcom drivers, so I just reflashed TWRP and am back to where I started.
That pretty much sums up my problem here. Kindly throw suggestions at me to help fix my problem' I've searched the forums but most of the bootloop issues I've found and read are about unsuccessful firmware flashes (not the case with me as I've explained above) or dirty flashes (again, not the case with me as I always cleanflash).
Thanks!
You should be focusing on getting stock OOS back on before trying custom rom. Have you tried rolling back to 5.1.7 Oreo? Sometime it better to go back to square 1 and try again.

I successfully flashed the 5.1.7 firmware and Oreo-TWRP-recovery and was able to install Lineage OS 15.1 and boot it up properly. I'm unable to find a link for previous versions of OOS to test whether or not 5.1.7 would work. Do you know where I can find a link?
Thanks again!

Can you please try to flash 5.1.4 stock oxygenOS rom and the 5.1.7 after it, then magisk and reboot to the os?
Make sure you have an old Oreo compatible recovery like this https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DrEMydZfQxC_eWx1W-OlASo8H7okXNTQ/view?usp=drivesdk

Lineage 15.1 (official) boots successfully but without radios working... I tried reflashing Firmware-5.1.7 but that does not help; not sure how to fix this. Could it be a firmware issue with installing Pie ROMs? But then again, OOS Oreo doesn't boot either - still ends up in a bootloop

Have a look at this link on xda. It's for an unbrick tool, which I've used numerous times with great success.

You need to put your device into MSM Download mode. It's simple. Power off your device. Press and hold the Volume UP key for about 8-10 seconds and, while continuing to hold the Volume UP key, plug in your device to your computer via USB. Open the MSM Tool and press Start.
That's it.
It takes about 3-5 minutes for the tool to complete the unbrick process.
Peter
Thank you! I was able to successfully use the unbrick tool to reset to OOS 4.5.8 Nougat. I'm going to try stepping all the way up to Pie now!

Encrypted slot

I am sick of this encryption thingy everytime I want to flash a rom on 6t, sometimes it works sometimes it's triggered even if I follow twrp tutorial.
Lately I flashed omnirom, but it encrypted slot B, I rebooted to slot A in recovery and Oos booted.
So it looks like slot B is still encrypted while A is running great and rooted with magisk.
Should I decrypt slot B or it's useless as long as I won't flash a new rom?
So did you managed to flash omnirom or not?

Tried a second time but it will trigger encryption again following twrp first post tutorial. It's weird because it worked in the past with other aosp roms. Perhaps Omnirom dev forgot to add A6010 as compatible 6t?

Odd. If I had to guess anything, it would be that not all the partitions were flashed when going from Nougat to Oreo.
I once flash a Nougat ROM from an Oreo ROM and I had the same encryption issue and lost everything.
That was the last time I would trust myself again and not do a backup.

I tried that as well. With stock recovery is says data is corrupted and doesn't do anything. I think it might be a problem with patched lg up because when i use normal lg up to flash oreo it works. But I cant root then.
I would try changing to 3.2.3-4 TWRP and then trying the procedure again. It seems that the 3.3.0 TWRP does not decrypt properly sometimes.

Hi
Looking for a way to keep TWRP and root ... any help appreciated
I've got a US996 with the same issue as the op. I have the latest TWRP 3.3.1-0. The phone was working fine until I upgraded twrp but I might have done a mistake resetting phone outside of twrp.
I can still get back into twrp but I haven't been able to install zip files without getting that decryption unsuccessful message when booting to system.
When getting back into TWRP using hardware buttons sometimes there is a prompt asking "keep system read only?" which I never chose and swipe to allow modification. I think this happens after
I pull the battery after getting the decryption unsuccessful message. There is a reset system that I could chose under the decryption unsuccessful message but I'm assuming that will make me lose twrp
...but if my phone is a us996 and is still
unlocked, would it matter if I did select it? Wouldn't I be able to reinstall twrp using adb again on a computer after Oreo is reinstalled?
To do Prowler_gr's suggestion which guide do I follow (sounds like I should do the second option)

Don't blame me if this goes wrong but I'm pretty much 100% certain that you mush press the rest button. This has happened to me a few times I'm sure. You won't loose twrp. Whatever resetting goes on in the background I don't think it's an actual Factory Reset.
Edit: Just to be clear you taking about a white screen with I think in dark blue or black text ENCRYPTION UNSUCCESSFUL and something like "reset phone" option directly under it, on the upper half of the screen?
Hi ezzony
Yes you are thinking of the right decryption unsuccessful page. I get it when booting to system

OP6T brick, how to recover without data loss?

Hey folks, I somehow bricked my OP6T and I hope for help to recover without data loss.
OP6T
OxygenOS (stable, not the latest though, I guess it's 10.3.2)
TWRP Recovery (twrp-3.3.1-31-fajita-installer-mauronofrio.zip)
Rooted with Magisk (not the newest version, the one before)
How this happened...
I wanted to update Magisk from within the app via the recommended way. But the first click on the button did not start the installation, so I clicked again, few seconds later the first installation dialog appeared, installation ended with a positive result. Then the second installation dialog appeared and ended with an error.
I rebooted and it ended up with the bootloader screen. No recovery, no system booting up. The TWRP 3.3.1-31 did not start using this command:
Code:
sudo ./fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-31-fajita-Q-mauronofrio.img
But TWRP finally started using the newer twrp-3.3.1-32-fajita-installer-mauronofrio.zip. However, neither slot a nor slot b will boot into system.
Booting system from slot a leads to bootloader, booting system from slot b ends up in a boot loop. Also, using the file manager within TWRP shows me encrypted directories and files. Now I am lost.
Is there a way to recover / unbrick without losing all the data?
Try restoring the stock boot image of whatever ROM you're using.
or You can use magisk patched img, instructions in magisk thread.
I read somewhere that you should not manually change the boot slots. The system decides when it must change the slot.

Restoring means losing data. This is what I wanted to avoid. I use stock OxygenOS, as mentioned above.
Since my system does not boot up, the system won't decide. Actually I hoped that things are not that bad and if I change the slot I maybe could have been lucky and system is booting up from that slot, but obviously nothing worked out yet.

Since you'll only replace the boot image your data will be safe. Boot and data are stored in different partitions.
You can use fastboot to do that or TWRP.
You will have to extract the boot image of OxygenOS before you can flash it. You'll need payload dumper to do that.
I suggest you google how to use it and all; check the guides section as well. If you need any more assistance then ask here.
Since the boot partition was corrupted it couldn't change the boot slot.
I think he means flash the same stock image you are currently running. This can fix many system issues with no data loss

Thanks guys. For some reasons (???) the last attempt with TWRP (twrp-3.3.1-32-fajita-Q-mauronofrio.img) lead to access to all files via TWRP. So atm I create a complete backup of /sdcard pulling everything via adb, which kind of takes a lot of time due to USB 2. After that I push latest OOS ROM, TWRP and Magisk and give it a try. At least I get even not clouded data back.
Will keep you updated... please stay tuned. :fingers-crossed:

Backup completed
pushed OOS ROM
TWRP and Magisk
dirty flashed ROM
rebooted to recovery
flashed Magisk
rebooted to system
That's basically it and everything works again. The most important step was, that for some reason TWRP let me access the decrypted file system. And then ADB is very helpful, brought my device back to live.
