6T on Project Fi? - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Anybody using or plan on purchasing an unlocked (non Tmo) OnePlus 6t on Project Fi?
I'm interested in the phone, but heard that it might not fully use the Fi service switching. Was wondering if anyone could confirm that a 6T could switch between Tmo and Sprint on Fi.
Take Care!
T

Can't switch between networks, and the phone doesn't support all of sprints bands. It should work on T-Mobile fine. I'm on Fi and getting my 6T tomorrow

I'm currently using Google Fi on my Unlocked Non-T-Mobile Oneplus 6T and it hasn't switched carriers -- it's just on T-Mobile. I'll try manual switching carriers later on if you'd like but there's no Sprint in my area unfortunately.
Be aware -- Google Fi is saying it's only giving me Access Mode which basically means just data. Despite that, I can use data, make calls, get messages -- without it affecting my data usage. It works just like on my Nexus 6P, except for two things:
What I CAN'T do and CAN'T figure out how to fix is sending/receiving MMS. I tried using Hangouts, the stock SMS app, and nothing really works. I read that a user got it to work on Reddit but I have had no success. Some people have also reported issues with visual voicemail but I haven't tested it.
Anyone got any tips on fixing the MMS issue?

Wifi calling on sprint vs fi

We all know that Wifi calling works on Fi for Tmobile & Sprint. The Question I have is Why doesn't wifi calling work if you're sprint only?
It really doesn't make sense. Does the fi sim have some magical sprint profile. Discuss
I believe WiFi calling on Fi is just like using Hangouts, since your number is actually a Google Voice number. If you have Google Voice, you can use Hangouts to make WiFi calls on Sprint or T-Mobile as well.

Its not. When I look at my fi phone, I don't use the hangouts dialer. Im using the integrated standard dialer. So that's what im trying to figure out, there is something fishy going on here.
T-Mobile WiFi calling us superior to Sprints
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
The wifi calling on my lgg3 works perfectly fine, the wifi calling on my tmobile work phone works fine. The wifi calling on sprint and tmobile on my project fi phone works great. I know the sim has to contain some profile that enables it for sprint, assuming some kind of VPN tunnel information. On my 6P with my fi sim in wifi calling option is there, sprint sim, option gone.
That's the only thing I can think of. I know when I got into a discussion with fi tech support over why 911 wasn't working properly. You're fi number is carried on tmobile, and sprint gives you a dark number. So its entirely possible that that there is some VPN going on.

I'm aware, but it's my understanding that the Google dialer has Hangout integration, which is why you are required to have Hangouts installed in order to make WiFi calls when using Fi.
I'm going to Uninstaller hang outs and see if it works with out it. I don't use hangouts for anything on fi except talking to my friends. I personally think the fi app is making the magic happen since it handles all the switching pieces.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Uninstalled hangouts. Wificalling still work. Disabled the fi app, breaks fi calling for sprint. Intresting!
I just had a long conversation with a Sprint tech that even went as far as saying maybe a third party app may help....but ....basically, WiFi calling is disabled for 6P (I use Sprint, not fi). It is really disappointing.
You pay for the phone...it should be open to be used as intended. Sprint is preventing us from using our "Unlocked Phones" & "Pure Android" phones and messing with the capabilities. Would that be grounds for a class action lawsuit? Who can we call to get that started?

V20 and project fi

I dont know if this has been asked before, will this work on project fi?
The official list at the moment is only Pixels, Nexus 6P and 5X. Not sure why the Nexus 6 isn't still on that list since it was the launch device for the service. (I'm guessing the list is limited to what they officially have stock of.)
The US996 carrier unlocked model would be the closest match for Project Fi, but that model is missing all the Sprint bands. So would only work with T-Mobile's network for FI.
You can check all the compatibility of the US996 here:

Just because the LS997 from Sprint supports all the bands for Project Fi, there is no guarantee that it would be carrier unlocked to work with Project Fi and its SIM.

Just posting to add that my h910 LG v20 from AT&T does work on fi. The one guy who said that only T-Mobile would work is correct in my case. The v20 doesn't even have the type of dialer codes that are used for forcing network switching on fi supported phones. However I have found some use for this because I have an official supported pixel 2 from Project fi and happened to be a convert from AT&T and thus I had my old h910 to screw around with why the hell not? So to anyone who is familiar with project fi and is also the type of geek who frequents XDA, you are probably aware of apps like signal spy or Signal Info. When I was talking about dialer codes, those apps copy the dialer code to your clipboard and then you paste to your phone dialer which will then switch to either T-Mobile, Sprint, or US Cellular.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that even if your variant of the v20 does have the correct radios to work on the network, at this point I'm unaware of any way to switch between those Networks. That is not to say it is impossible, perhaps somebody can code something that would do that and if so please shoot a message my way. Also you may be disappointed when you find out that picture texting doesn't seem to work, or at least I haven't figured out how to fix it yet.
I currently use my v20 on Project fi very often. Anyone who has a pixel 2 is probably aware that one of the biggest complaints about the February update is reduced battery life, and so I often pull my SIM card out and stick it into my v20. Which does bring me to an interesting note if you are unaware, if you begun your service with project fi on a pixel 2 phone ....... Which does bring me to hun interesting know if you are unaware, if you be gone your service with project fine a pic so to phone.. You will have been activated using the SIM method in which your phone does not actually have a nano SIM inside of it. Now what you can do as a simple little life hack or whatever the hell you want to call it, is call and ask project fi how you go about ordering a free nano SIM. It'll cost you nothing and when you get it you can then activate it to the same phone number as the E Sim. However you cannot use the ECM and the nano SIM simultaneously. But it does allow you to have a backup phone.

Now that you can order a SIM directly from Google, will it work with Sprint model V20 if unlocked?
I realize it won't have the carrier switching but that's ok.
I too use my V20 with Project-Fi. I have the T-Mobile variant and everything seems to be working fine. The network switching will not work and will be restricted with T-Mobile service only.. Also, you will be unable to do Wi-Fi calling. Seems to be restricted on non Project-Fi phones. As far as MMS, I've used it only with Hangouts. I like to keep all my conversations synced across devices. I can try MMS via the stock messaging app and see if it works. If data doesn't work, you can try the following APN settings:
Open the Settings app on your device.
Tap More (under Wireless & Networks).
Tap Cellular networks and then Access Point Names.
Tap + (at the top of the screen).
Tap Name and enter "Project Fi".
Tap APN and enter "h2g2".
Save.
Go back to the previous page.
Select Project Fi from the list.
Hope this helps.
hi, I have LGVv20 ATT version, its unlocked. If i use google fi sim, will it work? and switch?

Question on whether this works with Project FI

I got a buddy who's offering his 32gb Mate 8 with a 256gb sd card to trade for my 64gb Nexus 6P.
I am considering it but my real question is does anyone on here know if this will work with Project FI?
I've done some extensive searches on Google, some sites say yes with only T-Mobile working which isn't a problem for me because its the only available network in my area, Sprint sucks.
So what do you guys think, has anyone on here tried it with Project FI?
If I'm not mistaken on the AL10 model the CDMA bands are locked. So that would mean your device will only work on the GSM network. Sprint LTE towers *should* still work though. Best way is to test it out and report it to us, since you seem to have it available locally.
So I did the trade and Project Fi works, 4g LTE, super fast and no issues. Only thing that doesn't work is MMS.
So I figured it out for those who have a Nexus device laying around and want to try a Mate 8 or any other Android device on Project Fi.
I got phone, SMS and MMS working and all you need to do is order the data sim only card but you need to already have a Project Fi account to get this to work. Once you get it activate it online, insert the sim to the Mate 8, download Hangouts, go into hangouts settings make sure you sync your google account to receive calls and sms through Projrct FI and your are good to go. I'm currently using this set up with my Huawei Mate 8 and I have my Nexus 6 as my back up.
Just to understand: you have one project fi sim card in your Mate 8, which is a data-only sim, and all voice calls are over data via hangouts rather than typical cell tower voice service?

AT&T & Verizon VoLTE and VoWiFi calling/texting thread

Hi all. Posting this for users looking for answers on VoLTE and WoWifi on the 6T on AT&T & Verizon. If users with access to the OP6T could please test and report, that would be very helpful. Since the pixel 3 now supports both VoLTE & VoWiFi (on AT&T) there is perhaps some hope that OnePlus will also support it.
1: On AT&T, is there an option for Voice over LTE and Wifi calling and does it work?
2: On Verizon, I know Voice over LTE will work, but what about Wifi Calling?
Screen shots welcome I will have my hands on the device as soon as its available and will report since I have all the carriers, but thought maybe someone might get their hands on one early and could report. It might make a big difference on whether or now some users buy the device.! Thanks guys!
Yeah, whether or not I get the OP6T depends entirely on whether VoLTE and VoWiFi work on AT&T.
Eagerly waiting for updates!

AT&T & Verizon VoLTE and VoWiFi calling/texting thread
Same here. I’ve got a spot in SC where I got for holidays annually where, without Wi-Fi calling, my phone is a paperweight. I’ve always wanted to try a OnePlus but if there’s no Wi-Fi calling I’ll have to pass and stick with my XS Max.
I’ve already ordered but it’ll be a quick turnaround if that doesn’t work.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This question came up in the AMA with the OP team in their community forums last week, and Pei himself said VoWifi isn't supported at the moment.
Just got my device today so update time..
1: VoLTE works on Verizon by default as soon as you pop in the SIM. All the Verizon LTE bands seem to work fine.. in this area, 2,4,13, & 66. no option in the menu for wiFi calling, even though it works fine in my pixel 3 where my verizon SIM just was.
2: Neither VoLTE or VoWiFI work on AT&T by default. No option for either in the settings at all. So no change there from OP5/5T/6 ETC. However, if you go do the dialer, dial *#800# and hit enter, select oneplus logkit, scroll down to function switch and select it, and check the box for VoLTE switch and Vowifi switch and then reboot, it puts the VOLTE setting and VoWiFI setting in for both the Verizon and AT&T SIM. and while you can enable VoWIFI on both Verizon and AT&T, it DOES NOT work on either. On AT&T however, as long as you have a VOLTE capable/recognized IMEI on your AT&T account for your line, VoLTE/HD voice work just fine.
So, while it is amazing to have, for the first time ever a DUAL SIM phone that supports both VZW & AT&T at the same time, it is a too bad that VoWiFI does not work on either, Especially now that the Pixel 3 Supports it on both carriers.

Has anyone used the dialer code *#*#4636#*#* & try to toggle VoLTE &/OR VoWI-FI ?
Thanks for the info. I'm looking to get the 6T to use on AT&T. I've never used an unlocked/non-AT&T branded phone on my line. Are there any other limitations that AT&T implements on non-AT&T branded devices? Do they throttle data speeds? Any issues with SMS/MMS working like some Verizon users are experiencing? Would I need to contact AT&T to have any special provisioning just to get it to work? I appreciate any insight on this.

I'm not on AT&T so,I'm not gonna speculate.
Perhaps someone will chime-in soon for more definitive information.
My OnePlus 6t came in today. Took sim out of my Pixel 3 XL and popped it in. Everything is working except I can't SEND text messages. I can receive them and make calls, data is fine (actually amazing 44.5 mbps d/l, which is good for around here.)
I've tried chatting with Verizon, but after I told them what device, there was a long pause and then she asked if it was an iPhone
Here are my troubleshooting steps I've followed.
-deleted app cache and storage
-reset device
-factory reset device
-cleared cache partition in recovery
Any suggestions? I put the sim back in my Pixel and all the messages came through. I've tried both slots.

There is another thread discussing why a lot of people using 6T on Verizon having problem receiving SMS and MMS. Something the phone being LTE only on Verizon. Maybe you are having the same problem? Worth reading that thread.

Yes. that would be best. I didn't need to do anything with mine, it just worked. However, I do have the latest version the the Verizon SIM card. Not sure if that matters. I was using a Pixel 3 before.

I have used AT&T for years on unlocked devices. I have tested everything Data speeds are just fine. no issues there. the OP6T supports all the bands on AT&T so coverage should be just fine for you. The limits are as follows:
1: built in visual voicemail will not work, you will need to use the AT&T visual Voicemail app from the store.
2: Wifi calling/texting will not work
3: VoLTE/HD Voice will only work with the above mentioned trickery. Root is NOT needed. just the *#800# thing
the only provisioning you may need is the AT&T imei for VoLTE (Easiest to do online) after installing your AT&T SIM in the OP6T, if VoLTE doesn't work after following the instruction in this thread, log into your AT&T account and update your IMEI to one of your past AT&T phones that support VoLTE and update, reboot you OP6T and bingo, it will work. No other provisioning or limitations that I know of. And if VoLTE/HD Voice isn't important to you, you can ignore all this. Your existing AT&T SIM just needs installed in your OP6T and your good to go!

The *#800# enables all those options. But it doesn't help anything on Verizon, and on AT&T it does work for VoLTE if a VOLTE enabled IMEI is on your AT&T account, but it doesn't work for wifi calling. I wish it was just illegal for the carriers to block services just because its a non branded phone

So glad that I found this post. I am coming from an AT&T branded Galaxy S8 to my new OnePlus 6T. The above instructions worked like a charm for AT&T. I ran some tests. The OnePlus displays "HD" when I call my wife on her phone on AT&T and VoLTE shows in the status bar. When I toggle it back off I lose "HD" on the phone call screen. Also, LTE stays on during calls with VoLTE turned on and I ran a speedtest with it on and off and I definitely get 4G speed with it on and it downgrades to HSPA+ with VoLTE off and speed goes way down. Hopefully VoWIFI will be supported soon but that's not a deal breaker for me as I get great reception most of the time where I live, work and travel.

The service providers don't want you to buy unlocked phones. They make zero on them!! So that's why they block stuff. It's an antitrust lawsuit waiting to happen!! A$$h0!€$

I've got AT&T as my primary and Verizon as #2. I just got off the phone with Verizon, told them I needed to add the CDMA Less feature to fix my texting. He checked a box on his end and I got a flood of texts in...what was even better, it was a work phone on a business account. I didn't even have to provide any real information to him and he was able to fix me up. He was aware of the issue though, he'd asked if it was a 6T from T-Mobile...so someone sent out a bulletin somewhere that he had read.
Anyway, I left Verizon to go to AT&T specifically for this plan of having one phone to cover 2 lines while one being fully functional (AT&T), so far it's been working well switching between SIMs for texting and making phone calls.
What were you specifically looking to find out?
Edit: found what you're looking for...however I'm not sure where those settings are even at.

Any hope for Google Fi/T-Mobile VoLTE on int'l G7?

I have a dual-SIM international Moto G7 (XT1962-6) running LineageOS that I was happily using on AT&T until the 3G sunset (and VoLTE whitelist) became a thing.
I was hoping that I could move the phone over to T-Mobile, but testing with a family member's Google Fi SIM has shown that VoLTE doesn't work. (I don't have a T-Mobile SIM handy to test, but I assume that results would be similar.) Calls immediately fail if I disable 3G.
The behavior is exactly as described here - https://gitlab.com/LineageOS/issues/android/-/issues/2178
That post refers to missing "binary blobs," but it never really got resolved, as the user was able to get his phone working by back to the stock firmware, and then back to LineageOS. Unfortunately, I'm guessing that this won't work for me, because the phone is an international model, so even the stock firmware won't have the "magic bits" required to make it work with a U.S. carrier.
Can anyone think of any way to make this work?
