My kindle fire HDX 7" setup, for newbies!

First of all, thanks a lot to Cpasjuste for making the working gapps flashble zip, here's a link to that. I take no responsibility for doing this, all credit goes to Cpasjuste. Also I do not know a lot about deving myself but i've had two android devices before this and have been avid in modding them, just thought i'd put that out there.
So, first thing I did was get root, factory reset and get safestrap recovery. then I made a backup of my stock ROM, kept it on my kindle, and moved it to a safe spot in my computer (I recommend everyone does this, no matter if they choose to follow this setup or not.) I created a new ROM slot with default partitions, and restored my stock ROM to it (you do this in case any thing happens you have your stock ROM to fall back on). I tried flashing Cpasjuste's gapps rom, but for some reason there were multiple issues with it so instead, i restored to stock, on ROM slot 1, and flashed his gapps zip mentioned earlier. Rebooted and everything (well almost everything) worked perfectly. playstore works and only app that I have discovered to be incompatible is instagram for some reason, but i found a apk download online that installed perfectly to replace it. I installed a app from play store called recent apps quick button, which basically activates android's recent apps, then I installed a app from play store called Home2 shortcut. this lets me assign the resent apps quick button to double tapping the home button so now when i double tap the home button it brings me to recent apps. It's really nice since kindles default Rom doesn't have a recent apps button! Right now I am working on blocking updates from amazon to prevent losing root or bricking, using the tutorial found at the end of the root link. Let me know what you guys have done to make your kindle fire HDX experince better, or any questions you have.
Also, I forgot to mention that using the gapps flashable zip broke my amazon appstore and most amazon services, except video it seams like, but since we have safestrap recovery this isn't a big deal to me because i can always get it back, and im sure it will be fixed in future. No problem! Also if I were you I would delete most of the user apps on your stock ROM, Idk if you did what I said and factory reset before you got safestrap (I would not try it if you already safestrap since you will lose safestrap and possible break you device!) but if you didnt I would just go back and delete most user apps and data off stock ROM and then redo the backup and restore with that. because you most likely wont be using the stock ROM (you don't want to alter it since you want to have a safe spot to restore to) you want it to take up as little storage as possible. My advice, pretend that you don't have root and don't do anything with it, like editing parts of system, or flashing mod packages, etc... (only exception is having super user and safe strap app installed.) Let me know if any part of this was to confusing. Hope this helped!

Haha, I saw your reply about 2 minutes after starting up the factory rest. I can, however, confirm that safestrap is still installed between the boot and IS load, so I'm actually in a perfect position. Have taken a new backup of pure stock rom!

I got a copy of my Stock ROM installed into ROM slot 1 and then added the gapps package, it worked beautifully!
I now have a tablet with all the google features on and have no issues so far.
except...
when I boot to ROM slot 1, I get a message saying "Kindle is Updating/Upgrading". It doesn't do anything and it only takes a few seconds before it gives up. I was just wondering if there was a way of getting rid of this??

As someone who hasn't had any prior experience with Android (although a fair share of experience with GNU/Linux), I appreciate a thread like this.
I also rooted the device (works well from GNU/Linux), installed SuperSU and some essential apps to make the stock OS usable (busybox and a terminal emulator, of course; and also a lightweight file browser that doesn't take much space and does exactly that, lets me browse local files). Then installed SafeStrap and backed everything up to both the Kindle and the PC (the backup is accessible via MTP, in the internal storage, so you can just connect the USB cable and copy the TWRP directory – at least in KDE).
Now I'm going to try the new AOSP ROM. Though since I'm new to the whole Android business, the partition sizes have me a bit confused. I'd want to have three slots – the stock ROM (obviously), the stock FireOS (one that I can modify) and AOSP. What partition sizes for the two slots would be the best, if it's the 16GB HDX? Also, say I download a PDF file; would both FireOS and AOSP see the file if I put it in internal storage, or would I have to manually copy it over to the other slot through my PC?

@GreatEmerald, whats AOSP? I'm thinking of playing around a bit more. I want to try out some more ROMs.

AOSP = Android Open Source Project
Many other devices have an AOSP build and is typically a very nice build to flash if you like the core android feel with some extra very nice features.

Yea, as mentioned, AOSP is a ROM for stock Android 4.2.2, pretty much the only big ROM available for the HDX7 right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607185
It works pretty well as it is, I'm impressed it's as good already given how new the project is. Though it still has some issues for normal use. Aside from the bugs mentioned in the post, Chrome crashes as soon as it's launched (but you can use Firefox instead), as does the Kindle app (which is mainly what is stopping me from using it, because the point of a Kindle is the integration with Amazon services...). Also, the Facebook app fails to install for some reason.
Everything else I tried works fine. I installed F-Droid, a file manager, Busybox and a terminal, then the Amazon app and some of the Amazon cloud apps, and finally Skype. All of them work very nicely on AOSP. Even tested a video call on Skype and it worked without any problems (including the camera working correctly).
As someone new to Android and from a GNU/Linux background, I'm really happy that F-Droid exists. It's an app store/package manager that offers only free and open source software. For regular users that might sound as not a big deal, but actually filtering software by license is more powerful than one would think. You're guaranteed to have only apps that have no spyware and adware, because you can't hide them in open code. And those who make apps without publishing their code obviously have something to hide. So much like in GNU/Linux, the first place to check for new apps for me is F-Droid, and after that the main store of the OS (be it Google Play or Amazon Store), and only then 1Mobile market.
I still would like to know more about that partitioning, though. I figured out that the emulated SD card is shared between ROMs (I uploaded F-Droid to the Downloads directory on FireOS, and could see it on AOSP just as well), but I still don't know what exactly the two partitions you have to make to set up a ROM slot are and how much space should be allocated to them.

The system partition only needs to be as big as the Rom or backup you flash is, the data partition I typically make as big as possible (4000 mb) since this is what your Rom will consider internal storage. This is where apps and app data will be downloaded onto, where the rest of the data on your ad card is shared and is used for music, videos and lots of other custom stuff you can add. As for the cache I leave it at the default, this is where temporary data for apps is stored ( for example when you play a youtube video, it is temporarily stored on this partition.

Ah, that's good to know. It makes me wonder, though – can I resize partitions in some way? Say, I created a smallish partition setup for ROM slot 1, then another one for ROM slot 2, and then have a bit spare; can I allocate the whole space to ROM slot 1 if I no longer need ROM slot 2? Or to do a backup, clear the partition setup, then restore the backup into newly sized partitions?

yes, what i would do is backup my current setup, delete the rom slot your using, then remake it with your newly picked partitions

safestrap not working on my kindle hdx 7"
Hi my kindle is already rooted and I used towelroot. I have supersu installed too. I'm currently on the step of where I should install safestrap, but it seems safestrap is not working on my tablet. I tried 3.65, 3.72, 3.75 version of safestrap but it does not work. It always restart normally. Not in recovery. Pls help. 13.3.2.8 version. Thank u in advance.

Have you blocked OTA with HDX Toolkit? If not your device will likely brick if Amazon attempts to push an update. At present the blocker in HDX toolkit is the only one that works on 3.2.8.
Your attention should be focused on this task; can deal with safestrap once OTA block is in place.

UPDATED: [ROOT] How to Install the Google Play Store on Stock 4.5.5.1 -Thor

After this little adventure, I went into further testing. There is now a much simpler method of installing the Google Play Store. Fully functional. Two methods to be exact, and an experimental one.
Method 1) -Recommended if you have Safetrap 4.01
Make sure you have SuperUser (Not tested with Kingroot)
and you are running 4.5.5.1 (It'll probably work in earlier versions.)
Note: I have Superuser installed as a system app for safety.
My device is a Kindle Fire Hdx 7" (3rd gen) Thor.
-You need Safetrap (or head to method 2 for a non safe-trap procedure)
-You need to be rooted
-And you need to download from Open GApps (Platform: ARM Android: 4.4 Variant: Pico < Smallest package)
First, you must make space in System/Priv-app to flash this little package. (< There's no way around this)
I deleted [ moffice, weather, and the android.mail.apk ] (I do not need those. I actually do not need a lot of the amazon services except for books.)
Reboot into Safetrap and flash/Install the opengapps package.
Wipe Dalvik/Cache. Reboot
> If you get a "Failed" - It means you need to delete more apps.
Make sure the message reads "Insufficient space, etc" and not "incompatible,"
If you are successful, reboot.
Open the Google Play Store and simply sign in with your account. You are done.
I haven't experienced any crashing. nada.
Use Market helper for incompatible app (Although inbox by gmail isn't working for me, everything else is.)
Method 2) Recommended if you don't have Safe trap.
You might need to delete some apps from system/priv-app if you get "Insufficient space error" <For me, I didn't have to delete anything.>
You do not need Safetrap.
-You need Root and you need to follow the method described here, but with a little tweak:
Move all the apps mentioned in the guide to System/Priv-app > Account And Sync Settings, Google Services Framework, Google Login Service, and Vending.apk)
Install Google Play Services from your downloads (Normal Install) < I am using the latest ones I got off Google.>
Reboot.
Open the android market (in apps) and sign in. <
Download the latest Google Play Store (from the guide or Google)
I renamed it vending.apk for short.
Delete the vending.apk found in System/Priv-app and replace with the new one.
Reboot.
Google Play Store is functional and shouldn't crash.

Update: Now that the kindle app on android supports exporting highlights from personal docs/side-loaded books, etc.. I've made the full switch to CM11

The method below is now experimental. I couldn't get it to reproduce after replacing Kinguser With SuperSu.
This is a fully functional Playstore. You can search, download and update
Tested on:
Kindle Fire HDX 7" (3rd Gen) running 4.5.5.1 w/ Kingroot
* No one is more responsible for your device than you. With that in mind, back up, read carefully, don't go the extra mile just because, and be aware there is always a risk. On to the fun stuff~
You will need:
-Root
-Safetrap v4
-All 4 apks from here (Skip all the instructions there and scroll to where it says —Then install these apks—
You also need the Google Apps Minimal Edition from here.
----INSTRUCTIONS
-Move all 4 apks to sdcard/download and install each one.
-Move your Google Apps Minimal Edition.zip to sdcard/download and keep it there.
Reboot into Safetrap.
* Make sure you have a backup of your STOCK Rom !
Go to Install > Find your Google Apps Minimal Edition.zip and install it.
From the same screen once you are done wipe dalvik/cache
Reboot.
You might run into a gray screen ? Hit the home button. It is a one time thing.
Login to your existing Google account. You'll notice the App Store will crash after a minute.
Reboot. That's it. Playstore shouldn't crash anymore.
#If it works for other devices, versions, let me know. Thank you.
I tested it on my own device, and downloaded a couple of apps. If something changes I will update this.
Update: You can find the latest Google Play Store and Services here. Uninstalling both items is necessary to install the new version then you can use ccleaner to remove any Google app that says 'newer version installed'

I did method 2. This absolutely worked. I'm especially pleased, because I kept seeing that I would need Safestrap and a custom ROM in order to get the Play Store on my HDX 7. So, thanks for the instructions.

If I used Kingroot to root my device can I still use method 2?
Also can I use twrp instead of safestrap? I have no idea what each one does what.
I rooted my tablet (HDX 7 4.5.5.1) using Kingroot, and my ultimate goal is to use google services and youtube properly. And change the OS (Is Nexus rom a good idea?)

- no twrp, only safestrap v4 (which limits roms to cm11 and HDX Nexus)
- Google Services does not play well with FireOS v4. Strongly encourage custom rom if Google/YouTube is the end game
- YouTube via browser is also an option. Opera works well (as do others). Need to sideload via Opera home page or Apkmirror.

Google Play Services and FireOS v4 simply do not get along. This is just one of many threads that suggest an integration methodology that yields a suboptimal experience or (more commonly) a crippled device. Bite the bullet and go with Safestrap v4 and a compatible custom rom (cm11 or HDX Nexus).

I am glad it worked out for you. Believe it or not, since I did method 1, I am still running my custom rom since that very day. Stable and smooth sailing.

This is the reason I tried to experiment with several different methods. I knew there are some users that are not interested or are too intimidated by Safetrap/Custom Roms, so I am glad it worked for you! :good:

I was wondering if anyone could help me a little bit with option 2 in the op's post? I am not the most tech savvy person in the world, so I am struggling a little with it. I have Kindle HDX 7 (3rd gen). I have managed to root using Kingroot. I attempted installing Google store. Got all the files downloaded and I thought installed accurately, but it would never let me sign in. I uninstalled and was going to retry using method 2 above that says move the files to system/private app before installing. I can't figure out how to get them from download to there though. I have ES File Explorer, but downloaded the recommended WIFI Explorer Pro to see file structure on my computer. Tried dragging and dropping and that did not work. Any advice? The instructions for #2 have not been the easiest for me to follow.

Several ways to copy/move files in ES File Explorer. Perhaps easiest is to long file and scan options that pop-up (varies by version and config) for 'copy', 'move', 'copy to', etc. If nothing obvious check in 3-dot menu. Then navigate to target folder and tap 'paste'. Multiple files can be selected and copied at once.
If the files reside on your computer you should be able to copy/move using the same technique. Or simply download the directly to your device using the built-in Silk browser then move to target folder using ES File Explorer.
Might want to consider a custom ROM which has the Play Store built-in. While Amazon and Google components get along better in FireOS 5.x it is never a happy marriage with occasional glitches as versions of both change over time.

Thank you Davey126. I will give that a try. I have debated installing a custom rom, but fear that may be a little beyond my capabilities. I am struggling enough just getting Google Play on it. I am use to Android, so it has been hard to adjust to how locked down the Kindle is. Maybe if I come across some instructions I can easily follow, I will finally give that a custom rom a try.

Actually you need to turn ON the ROOT EXPLORER option from TOOLS on Es File Explorer. to do so... Tap on TOOLS > ROOT EXPLORER > MOUNT RW and then mark all 4 options on right side (under RW) and tap on OK. doing so you will be able to move, copy and delete files/apks from/to System folders.

After searching for several hours, I can't find any worked method since all threads I found are outdated and people reported they were no longer working. I'm wondering if the method in this thread can work with my Kindle? Thank you!

In general Amazon and Google components do not play well on FireOS v4.x. It can be made to work...sort of...but tends to be susceptible when Play components auto update which happens frequently. A more reliable approach is to install a custom rom (CM11 or Nexus) that natively supports Google Play Framework, Services and Store.

I have the Fire HDX 7" 3rd gen and was wanting to make it a true Android tablet due to Amazon not updating it further. I have read post after post and I am so confused as to where to even begin. I know it needs to be rooted and a custom ROM installed, I just wish there was one place I could find step by step instructions to do so. I'd rather have Fire OS than have an usable tablet. Maybe I just need to give up trying to do it.

Can I download ES file explorer from the Amazonn app store or should it be downloaded elsewhere? I have downloaded and installed KingRoot, but I haven't ran it as of yet.
Also wanted to say thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Not sure how current the version in the Amazon App store is. Best grab a copy from here.
Tip: If unsure post any questions you may have before acting. HDX is a touchy device; easy to brick and hard (often impossible) to recover if you stray too far off the trail. Several great folks monitor these forums and can help as needed.

Stable AOSP 7.1 setup w/ working Google and Voice - ACHIEVED!

This guide is to install AOSP 7.1.2 and GApps on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, model GT-P7500 ("p4"). It has also been reported working on the Wifi-only version GT-P7510 ("p4wifi") with minor changes, noted in the instructions. I will update this main post as better information becomes known.

After a couple dozen wipe-and-retry sessions, I thought I'd share my current setup which to date has been the most stable configuration I've had between Nougat and Oreo. I've had absolutely no stability issues so far with this setup, and I even have fully functional Google search, voice search (and Ok Google), and voice typing - no crashes. Anyone who's tried to install a modern GApps on these devices will know the frustration of literally endless and unstoppable "....has stopped" messages!
Here's what I've got working on my GT-P7500:
- AOSP Nougat 7.1 (all thanks to @decatf)
- Fully functional Google Apps - NO "... has stopped working"/"... keeps crashing" issues. None.
- Google Search, Google Now, voice search, voice typing, and other voice-related services ALL WORK. No crashing.
I should also mention that I have NOT included the instructions to create the 1GB /system partition. I figured this out when I was trying to install modern GApps that needed more space; in the end the instructions below turned out to be the best and do not require the expanded space. I have posted the file in another thread if anyone wants it for other purposes.
Installation Instructions:
Download these files to your PC. Some files are different for different variants of the device - make sure you get the right ones for your device!

Use only this version, the newer ones don't work well with this device.

Yes, really, the Lollipop version. Just trust me.
Boot into Download mode (instructions).
Connect to PC.
Start up Odin v1.85.
If the device is properly recognized, it will show up in the first of the row of white squares at the top. If not, install the Samsung USB Drivers and start again.
Use Odin 1.85 to install TWRP 3.1.1 Custom.
Reboot to Recovery mode (instructions).
Wipe the device, including the /system partition.
Transfer the AOSP, SuperSU, and GApps files to the device.
Install decatf's AOSP 7.1.2.
Install SuperSU v2.82.
Do NOT install GApps at this time, despite all the instructions everywhere else that you would normally install GApps before the first boot. This older release is being used to get a version of the Google app that works on this tablet's no-longer-supported CPU, and the install is done after first boot to bypass Google's Setup Wizard which will put you in an impossible-to-exit loop.
Reboot to System, and allow complete boot-up. Note that the boot will take several minutes as Android 7 does its thing setting up - be patient!
Once fully booted, wait a minute for the system to settle, then reboot back into Recovery.
Install custom GApps.
Reboot to System. Boot should be much faster this time.
You can do this part later, but the final steps will be smoother if you do this first.
Install a CPU Speed Control program of your choice. Device Control, 3C Toolbox, No-Frills CPU, heck even Automate or Tasker if you already have a script setup.
Set your CPU Max speed to 1400 MHz (1.4 GHz). I find stability issues at anything above 1400 on my device; your mileage may vary. When testing speeds, do not set them to apply on boot until you are certain it is still stable, or you may have some difficulty reverting.
Optionally Set your CPU Governer to Performance. This results in a smoother system overall, and doesn't seem to have much of an effect on battery life. I also use some settings to drop the Governer to Interactive when the screen is off, back to Performance on screen on. You can do this using any number of programs like Automate, Tasker, IFTTT, 3C Toolbox, and many others...
Most important step - open Play Store, go to My Apps, select Google, click the Menu in the top-right corner, and uncheck Auto-Updates. Alternately, you can go to Play Store Settings, and disable auto-updates altogether, but that is more troublesome than simply inhibiting the single app.
Update Google Play Services. It will need to be updated before most of the newer apps will function, so might as well do it now.
Install all the other Google apps you want from the Play Store, and any updates... you will need to update Play Services before most of the newer apps will function... but never, ever update the main Google app.
Open Settings.
Scroll to the bottom, and open Language and Input. Select Physical Keyboard settings, and enable "Show Virtual Keyboard". This ROM fakes having a physical keyboard always connected for some reason, so you will never see an on-screen keyboard unless you turn this on.
As long as we're in Settings, go to Security, and enable Unknown Sources. You'll probably want this.
Set up your Wi-Fi connection.
Adjust any of your other preferred settings.
You're finished! Try installing some of the software below.
Known issues:
Browser will crash once or twice during the first few minutes of operation for unknown reasons. Doesn't seem to happen again after that.
Recommended software that works: (I'll add Play Store links later...)
3C Toolbox / 3C Toolbox Pro - I've found this to be an excellent package for numerous functions including CPU control, app control, and battery reporting - I was able to quickly determine which of my chargers would charge it fastest. Also gives options for optimizing device on each boot and a number of other useful functions.
Via Browser, a modern browser built to be slim and speedy "for geeks". It is surprisingly responsive compared to the other two options on this old device.
decatf's Chromium for Tegra 2 CPUs (direct link to Downloads). This is a modern browser with all the features you expect, but compiled to run on the older CPU. It is a little bit slow but is essentially Chrome without the official branding, including the ability to sync with Chrome on other devices. @decatf is nice enough to keep compiling new versions to keep it roughly on par with Chrome, let's hope he keeps it up.
Firefox Focus, a privacy-focused version of the Firefox browser maintained separately. For whatever reason, this one is still compiled for older devices where the full browser is not. It is a modern and relatively speedy browser which can be nice to have on hand, but purposely eliminates features most people want in a daily-use browser, like bookmarks, history, etc.

Mainstream software that WILL NOT WORK, even though it shows up as compatible in the Play Store and will install fine (but complain about your CPU type or report 'unsupported device'):
Google Chrome browser - as an alternative, check out decatf's Chromium, noted above.
Mozilla Firefox browser - as an alternative, check out Firefox Focus and Via Browser, noted above.

You read it. I have a Tab 10.1 (GT-P7500) which I have managed to configure with decatf's AOSF Nougat 7.1, Google Apps with fully functional Google App and Voice Search (NO crashes), and with an enlarged /system partition so there is actually room on the partition to install some extra system apps without mucking about with linking or anything.
I slapped a quick guide to the GApps bit on the end of decatf's 7.1 thread in Development, but I wonder if there is enough of an interested audience for me to write up how I did the whole thing?

I could find little to no information on how to do any of this, but I pieced it all together, experimented, and got it working. I've solved most of the problems I was having, including the ones that seem to be most commonly posted here from what I can see.
So here's what I've got working on my GT-P7500:
- decatf's AOSF Nougat 7.1
- Fully functional Google Apps, NO "... has stopped working"/"... keeps crashing" issues. None.
- Google App WORKS. No crashing.
- Google Now WORKS. No crashing.
- Voice search WORKS. No crashing.
- Voice typing and other voice-related services WORK. No crashing.
- Larger /system partition.
What I haven't figured out or haven't worked on yet:
- Some apps do not seem to be reading the compass properly, but I think a test app showed it as working, so needs more investigation...
- Get (standard) Firefox running.
- Which partitions can be safely reduced or eliminated to increase available data space.
- Experimenting to see if any voltage adjustments will allow 1.6GHz overclocking to function without freezing up. My device will only run stable at 1.4GHz

Please post the instructions. I still use the OG Galaxy Tab 10.1 regularly. Yes its slow as all heck, and barely runs 2 apps at a time. But Id like to do this just for giggles before my Yoga Book comes in the mail and i lay my 6yr old Tab to rest.

I'd also be very much interested in this. I just got one of these as a gift for a NGO that I'm working for, and would love to be able to use it...

I followed all the steps up until I got to 'install SuperSU'. First root I did, it stopped the home button/recent apps button from working. So I started again and didn't install it
GApps worked perfectly and I was able to login to google and download all my apps
Once I rebooted the system, the tablet was stuck on the "Android" logo for about 5-8 mins so I left it and then it loaded normally. 2nd time it loaded perfectly.
Installed Device Control [root] but it said it wasn't able to access the processor tab so uninstalled.

FYI, I had to use TWRP 2.8.7.0 available at the same link https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=24424 for my p4wifi. I tried the latter one, but didnt work so just copied over the older tar file, installed in TWRP itself, rebooted recovery, and then the rest of the steps worked. Thanks OP for trying to bring this old tablet back to life!

When I install aosp-7.1-p4-20171005.zip, I got:
E3004: This package is for "p4" devices; this is a "p4wifi"
and stop installing

Word/Excel
Hi! I can't launch Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint from Play Store. I get a message "This device uses a processor that doesn't meet the system requirements for installing Office.". Have I done something wrong during the update? Thanks!

Mine is running very smoothly including internet and video, however, I am having the following issues:
- home screen circle and task history triangle buttons in the bottom menu are not working
- when I plug in the USB cable my computer recognizes the device but no menu pops up on the tablet allowing me to select file sharing
- I can't access developer options in the settings menu (tapping 7 times on the build version does not bring it up)
So right now I can't move any files to the tablet.

Unfortuntately, something is wrong with my onscreen menus. I can't swipe down to expand the menu, so I only see the top row of symbols (wifi, user, flashlight, auto-rotate, Bluetooth) and can't get to any other symbols. I'm kind of new to this so I'm not sure what impact different versions of TWRP would have - my version is 3.0.3. Maybe I should update to the version noted in the post.
I get the same error for Word.

Good guide, but some inconsistencies in the sequence.
For example, you indicate to disable the auto-update on the Google app BEFORE to fill in your Google account: it's impossible.
And even after you enter your Google account, you need to install at least one application (and therefore activate the wifi) to see the Google app in the list "My applications".
Other than that, it's more stable than my previous installation, and just for that: thank you!

Good guide, I successfully installed Nougat on my Tab 10.1. following your steps. Very smooth. BTW, I didn't install any Gapps son I can't provide any feedback about it. I can say overclocking to 1400 Mhz seems pretty stable on my unit.
Regarding the non-NEON issue, I found this guy built a relatively recent Firefox 59 package compatible with our device. It's not the latest version, but it's better than what we had. It works fine for me.:good:

I've recently received a second NST and decided to start some tests which I didn't want to mess up my regular device doing.
My first item is GApps. UNLESS you absolutely MUST have Google Books (1.2.2 is the only working version w/sync--but no purchase ability), there is no need to install GApps. All of my apps which will run on the NST are perfectly happy without GApps, including many whose current versions (like MX Player and the NPR app) balk at running without GFS (Google Framework Services) on newer devices. I guess the old versions just predate all that.

Edit: I've come across an exception: Tasker and any apps generated from Tasker/App Factory (that includes my own USB one-touch toggles, Current Bookcover Screensaver, and Screenshot). It turns out that Tasker and its daughter apps have a built in dependency on two Google Maps library files. You don't get these by installing Maps (tried that...). Instead they are a part of GApps installation. But you can place these two files yourself to solve this issue (attached below--the xml file is zipped so you can actually download it instead of view it). Copy the files into these locations (you will need to mount /system as RW temporarily):
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Set permissions for both files to rw-r--r-- and reboot.

NONE of the apps in the GApps install package work any longer except for the rudimentary sync/account files that are needed for Google Books, and those must be set via GMail (which otherwise does not work). OK, Calculator works But you don't need GApps to run it. You also cannot sign in to Google or access the Market any more with the apps in the package. But installing GApps will clog your system with a bunch of apps churning away in the background, eating up your battery.
Realistically there is not much in the PlayStore for our devices and most useful apps need to be found elsewhere and sideloaded. However, if you have your heart set on PlayStore access, I recommend the Yalp Store (FDroid). It works well on the NST (I just used it to install MX Player), but you do have to update it from time to time when Google has made some sort of api change, and you cannot purchase apps this way.
Disclaimer: my test of apps is not exhaustive, of course. You may have the exception to my proposed rule. But I doubt it.

The easiest way is to use the Factory restore option of Nook Manager. That will trigger a reimage with whatever the device left the factory. On my recent acquisition that was 1.0.0! You can use the 1.2.1 update zip from the B&N website to get back to current ( barring the 1.2.2 update which I think is pushing out early Pacific Time on weekends--still have to check that).

Last night, I sat down and rooted one of my 2017 HD8 tablets, following the damn-amazing Experimental Software Root method as recently uncovered and shared with us by @diplomatic. I then installed SuperSU (from the damn Play store!) to take the root from temporary to permanent.
I spent the last 24 hours FINALLY being able to use my Fire tablet as a semi-solid/functional personal computing device, finally able to really setup the device to perform as I need it to, and I've been very happy with how everything turned out.
Well, I just came back to my desk to find a message from "Play Protect," (a feature/service I ALWAYS turn off in Play Store settings, on all of my devices):
App Removed by Play Protect: SuperSU
This app can allow unauthorized access to your data or device.
(see images attached).
I checked and no longer have root status. Also, now I can't install any .apk files whatsoever. WTF??!
I downloaded SuperSU... FROM THE PLAY STORE...! The app is listed and available for installation from/by the Play Store (see attached photo).
So, I guess now I will just re-root and hope in the future Google chills the F out/gets their creepy little hands out of my device/data. Maybe I should freeze the Play Store/Play Services? I just wanted to see if anyone else had ever had this happen to them/if there is a recommended solution. SO annoying!!! ??‼?‼??
(pardon my grumpiness/I feel a little bit better now, post vent ?)

I was able to recover root by simply reinstalling "SuperSU" from the Play Store. Hopefully it was just a fluke and everything will stay where it should be.

I had exact same thing happen but once reinstalled from play store it has been fine.

I had a similar experience today when updating some apps I got from the Google Play Store. During the updates, it deleted my SuperSU with no warning or asking permission. Luckily, it didn't affect my root as far as I can tell. I too got SuperSU from the Play Store. It is DEFINITELY annoying !

Two things when installing play store. Always good to 1) immediately turn off auto updates the second you sign in. 2) turn off play protect.
As soon as play services updates, all apps will start to update if they are allowed. So make sure to look at 'my apps', and make sure none are stuck in que. If so, tap 'stop all'.

I am having the exact same issue. Nothing seems to be working no matter what I disable. it keeps removing supersu

Just don't update from the play store unless you downloaded it there and if you do update, do so manually by downloading standalone apk and installing it through documents or a root explorer. I'm trying to work on a fix for this version in some form. We can't flash it unless you use the modified version on the stock rom thread because we aren't quite 64 bit yet. Flashing the standard zip will bootloop. So I've been experimenting with a totally manual install, including rooting the boot.img so when the apk is installed it doesn't perform the auto install embedded into it. So far, though I don't really know yet, it appears to be a success. One of the issues, I think, was the installation of the 64 bit library file. Either it install it, but in the regular lib folder, or doesn't install it at all or does install but doesn't set proper permissions (guesswork). So I added the necessary files by unpacking and repacking the boot.img. This is not a final version.I'm, but If anyone is interested in trying it out I can upload the boot.img.
