How does an App open a disabled app to show an Ad? - Samsung Galaxy J7 (2017) Questions & Answers

My dad has a Galaxy J7 Prime it keeps opening Google chrome to show an full screen ad.
The problem is that chrome is disabled thru Apps on this phone.
He is complaining about the Ads on this phone and he wants them to stop without having to do a factory reset.
He hasn't downloaded any app recently but this started sometime last week. He uses only Adblock browser so Im all out of ideas.
These ads consists of advertising a app to download.
Lookout and Malwarebytes both say theres no problems.
EDIT: Will rooting this device and removing google chrome entirely from this phone using titanium backup solve the issue?

I've had this a few times with rogue apps.
Just find the app responsible.
Set your recents to list view. Next time the ad pops up press the back button.
Open recents and look at the apps, one should be responsible for the ad.
If you see a recent app listed with no icon it is probably that. To make it reveal itself long press on the left of the recent.

[SOLVED] Gmail gone from recent app list, won't show up

Hi!
After applying the "one click lag fix" and installing the Autokiller app my Gmail app disappeared from the recent app list which comes up after long pressing the home button.
Is there any workaround to get it back in the list?
Thx!

Just maually launch the GMail app and it will show up in the list. The list shows 6 recently launched apps, not recently intalled apps, nor favorite apps.

Erm... it's not quite what I asked, sorry. I said it doesn't show up in the list anymore, not that I just installed it or that it's my favourite app.
Even if it's running in background I can't select it - cause it's not there anymore.
Any help?

So you mean it even disappeared from the programm menu ? It´s because the recent programm list (long pressing Homebutton) ist different to the programm menu. At least there it should appear. If you launch it from there it will show again in recent programm list.
Come on guys... it's not my first day of using the phone.
It's in the programm menu, it's widget is my homescreen - it just doesn't appear in the "recent program list" anymore. So I can't switch, say, between my browser and my Gmail app anymore.
I don't know how I should explain it in a different way. The app doesn't show up in the recent program list anymore when I long press the home button. It's gone, even if it's running in background and was the LAST app I had opened.
So? Doesn't somebody know something about this?
Visual Task Switcher would be an alternative. I quite like the app, it's a bit slow when using default (home to launch), but when launching from the home page, widgetlocker or quickdesk it's super fast and I find it to be more functional than the recent app list.
So to summerize what OP says: GMail doesn't register as a recently used app, either when launched from the application list or from a widget.
Now that's really strange indeed.
The lagfixes out there do move key Android datastores around, so the obvious test would be to undo the lagfix and see if the problem persists.

Your summary its absolutely correct, that's my problem.
I guess you're right, I should undo the fix and check it out. But first I should nandroid my device. However the result turns out, I will keep the OCLF and will have to live with with the error if it persists. I also seem to be the only person having ever encountered the error.
I just thought there could a workaround to get it fixed.
You say it does not register as a recent app. Maybe that's the point where one could look for a solution...
Maybe try clearing the cache and data of the gmail app then reboot?
Dont worry Phandroid, I just noticed Im having the same issue. I just yesterday updated from jf5 to jm2 with Kies and I've not applied any lagfix. Also, I'm 80% sure I had this issue bäwith older firmware also.
I will try to find out a solution.
Edit: Okay, I realized that when launching from menu it does appear on recent programs list, but launched from desktop it doesn't. I remoced Gmail desktop shorcut and readded it and now it appears correctly.

OMG! Why in the world didn't I think of such a simple solution? It worked indeed. Thank you very very much!
Great
Gmail was auto-added on desktop by default with the firmware so that probably had something to do with it not appearing on recently ran apps list. Other apps that were on desktop by default I've removed so I cannot test if it concerns all default app shortcuts...

How do you kill a running app

On my Samsung Gingerbread /Touchwiz Galaxy Phone long touch of the home button brings up recent applications with a task killer button that lists running apps with an exit button each.
The recent apps button on the Nexus doesn't seem to lead to a kill option.
I guess I could go to settings/apps/running and select an app and pick the stop from its page, but thats a lot more complicated.
Is there an easier way?
Press the right button (looks like two windows) then swipe to kill

Thanks, I had the right button, but I was trying to kill with a long press instead of a swipe. I thought kill/delete with Swipes was an Apple thing, while Android used long press.
Maybe Apple will sue
Nah, in the iPod touch and iPad it's long press which brings up close buttons
According to the manual the only way to kill a task is in the settings / apps section. "Force Stop"
Swiping away the "recent apps" simply removes it from "recent apps"
Jellybean manages apps / memory automatically. You should never be short on memory.

Yea, that isn't killing an app.
You don't need to kill apps as a matter of routine although people always seem to think so. Sometimes it is necessary if the app is behaving badly and there a lots of task-killers available that will do that.
I like "system panel" as it has other uses too.
The "recent apps" button is supposed to be there for your convenience so you can easily go from one app to another, if you are swiping them away you are just nullifying the point of the button.
Actually swiping away from the recent apps does indeed kill the app. You can verify the behavior on apps by swiping them away and opening them again. They will load from the beginning instead of where you left off.

ok thanks, didn't know that. I think some of the other stuff I said is still kinda valid tho. There is no real need to kill apps.

I would hardly call that proof. It could simply be a signal to refresh instead of "pick up where you left off". After all, if you swipe it away you dont really have an urgent need to go right "back where you left off".

The proof is already out there. I just simplified it. There was a huge debate about it when the Gnex came out and I believe a Googler posted about it on Google+ as well.

Don't most people put a task manager widget (Application Manager) on their home screens anyway for this so you can quit all active apps and clear your RAM? It was a standard app on my Samsung Captivate Glide, and I keep it next to my battery widget so maybe between the two I can make the battery last more than 8 hours.

is there a way to delete all the runnings apps at once? It's tiring to swipe them out one by one..
sometimes after a long use you have more than 10 apps running, it would be easier if i can simply swipe them all out with one button

Again, that's why I like my App Manager widget, you have the option to kill everything in one click (at least until I get the ics update, then it's two clicks for that damn confirmation screen).

I've always heard it likened to the backing out of an app with the back button. If I go into G+, go into a room in messenger and skip to home, I can resume the app right where I left off (provided it's soon, hasn't been killed). But if I exit home, swipe the app out, it acts as if I've closed it but it's kept in memory. If I do the same but long press the app in the recent apps list, go to app info and kill the app, then it is forced out of memory. It's essentially killing the app. A good example is a music app; the app continues to play when you've backed out of the app via the back button, even when you swipe the app away as it is still in use. Force stopping the app has a definite result.
Guess it is time for the obligatory "why you shouldn't don't need to use a task killer" with Android. This is an old article, but this was true then and is even more so now. Killing all apps isn't necessary and can have negative effects.
-edit-
Probably should have linked the mentioned article;

It works, but it ruins the the running tasks page. After you killed everything, bring up the running apps, and they are all still there. It doesn't get rid of the apps there, so that's still annoying

[Q] Is the easiest way to stop and app...

I was just wondering if someone knew what was going on when you swipe away an app in the app switcher. (I'm not sure what the proper name is for the 3rd soft button so my searches haven't proved very useful - although I'm sure this information is out there!)
To be clear, you know how you can cycle between open apps by hitting the 3rd soft button? And you can also 'swipe away' an app here. Does this shut the app down along with all related processes? Does anyone know what's going on behind the scenes?
For example if I lose my twitter app this way I no longer get tweet notifications, but if I close gmail I do get email updates - but perhaps the latter is more tightly integrated or maybe I've remembered this behaviour wrong!
I guess what I'm really trying to understand is if this is the easiest way (without using 3rd party apps) to keep tabs on open apps and make sure my poor Nexus doesn't get overwhelmed by processes.
Thanks.
oops typo in the thread title.. should be "an app"
That third button is called a Recents button. And currently when you swipe away an app all it does is remove that app from your recents list but it does not close the app
Ah, great, just the info I was after.

Post your Lollipop 5.01 bugs here

Seems we should have a thread with bugs and if anyone knows how to fix them, solutions since we finally have Lollipop now.
First bug I've encountered is in Google Voice.
If you open the advanced settings, two of the options are grayed out that should be available... they allow google voice to hear you if you have an app open, or the screen turned off, and also to allow you to train it.
If you reboot your phone, you WILL have access to these settings for a short period of time before it dies again. just retain it then.
Voice search works if you have a homescreen open, or if you have google search open, but the additional functionality is busted.
I also searched, and it looks like Sprint users ran into the same thing when they got lollipop a month ago.
Where the hell is the samsung app store? Kind die for Samsung keeps crashing too! Wtf?
Its called either galaxy gifts, or galaxy apps.
I'd just clear the cache on it though instead of turning it off.. they offer some apps with exclusive add ons, and some freebies you might want.
Also, I remembered something mentioned a few days ago.. go into application settings and turn off dm-ignite.
(Its a browsing snoop app that collects your data, and send it to Verizon so they can share it with marketing partners so they can serve you advertisements in browsers and applications.)

Go to Widgets and add the Galaxy widget to get to the Samsung store.
Not a bug, but it seems like one... this game is impossible! Has anyone had any luck with it? (Settings - About Phone - 5 taps on android version to get the lollipop logo, then swipe to get the game)

When using the power button to lock the device, there is an ever slight delay. The screen goes black but I can still accidentally open an app when setting it down. I did the OTA without factory reset and then ended up doing a factory reset. Still there. It reminds me of what used to happen on some roms back in the SGIII days. It's not a deal breaker and if that's the biggest issue, I can live with it.

Now that is odd. I have not seen that option since I had my Galaxy S5. Thought it was a Note thing. To confirm, it is not there and was never there on my Note 4. Wonder if it's because I purchased from Samsung rather than Verizon. Seems Samsung would include their own Essentials app though. All Verizon apps were present.

No I keep my notification bar clear on the left. I think there is a way to set the priority level of weather bug notifications that will keep them off the lock screen. Seems I did it for play store on my S5 as I hated the lock screen notifications for app updates. I just can't remember how I did it.

Changing priority either blocks the notifications on the bar all together, allows them, or leaves them saying "sensitive information blocked". I don't think there is anyway around it.
My Note 4 seemed very slow at first after the update, so I entered the recovery menu and cleaned the cache partition, and that seems to have fixed it.
Swappiness == 130?
I installed on 4/3. BOAF. I didn't factory reset, I did clear the system cache (several times). Pretty much everything seems great! For a while- except, it is burning the hell out of my battery/CPU (which 4.4.4 never did) and I notice (via OS Monitor) that kswapd0 is running A LOT. Even when I am showing 450mb free, kswapd0 is using 6-10%. Often it goes up to 23% and my battery lasts 1/2 what it did before. I've rebooted a number of times, no change.
So, I started looking into kswapd0 and one parameter that is important is 'swappiness'.
I checked : cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
And it says : 130
Yes, 130! That's pretty insane - the standard default is usually around 60 (and could stand to be even less, frankly on a 3gb device like this). But anyhow, 130 is causing major issues!
Has anyone been able to get the advanced calling to work? I activated it but the option to video call is grayed out? Any ideas?

Apps not showing on home screen

Hey guys, I will try to find include as much info as I can. I have Google play loaded on the device. I tried to uninstall an app and the icon remained, trying to uninstall it again gives me a pop-up about the app files do not exsist. Ever since then if i install an app from either the play store or the Amazon app store they will not show up on the main screen. The apps are there and I can remove them via settings. I have tried a hard reset as well as reinstalling the initial app that caused the problem. When I do that the app icon works again but no new apps show up still. If I uninstall it again it does the same thing as the first time, the icon stays.
I was hoping there was something running in the background i can clear the data for or something to fix this. I do not know enough about it to tinker around with it. I have some stuff downloaded from Google play that i cannot backup. A factory reset will lose the data on those accounts so I am trying to avoid it.
If you have any suggestions I will gladly try them, thank you in advance for your help
Mine is doing the same today, I've uninstalled it but the icon remains on the screen. I've also tried others that I've installed from Google play, all behave the same.
Are new apps that you install showing up? I cannot get any new app to appear.
