Summary
- Part 1 : Install drivers and unlock bootloader. Credit to @balazs312
- Part 2 : Root with 2 ways
- Bonus : Backup boot.img and make patched_boot.img
- Part 3 : OTA
Part 1 :
So, First you need to install drivers and unlock your phone bootloader. Skip to part 2 if already done.
1. Installing drivers & Preparing PC
- Download this and extract it
- Open and install "adb-setup-1.4.3.exe"
- When it is done, go to "Drivers" folder and start "miflash_unlock.exe"
- Click on the gear icon top right corner and click on "Check" next to "Click the button to install the drive"
- Do as the installer says
- Hopefully the drivers has been installed so we're done with it, let's head on the next step.
2. Preparing phone for unlocking
- On your phone navigate to Settings->System->About phone and tap the build number until you see "You are developer"
- Go back once and you'll see a new menu called "Developer options"
- Tap on it and search an option called "OEM Unlocking", enable it
- We're done here. Let's keep going
3. Entering fastboot and unlocking bootloader (MAKE A BACKUP of your data!)
- Hold your power button down, tap on restart and hold your volume DOWN button while it resets until you see the Mi bunny doing its thing
- Now we're in Fastboot mode, hooray
- Download this zip and extract it on your PC
- Open it and type "cmd" (without the quotations) in the file manager header where you see (This computer>somethingsomething>Mi A2 fastboot), don't be afraid just type it in, and hit enter and you'll enter into command prompt
- Now we are ready for action
- Type these commands one by one:
fastboot flashing unlock
fastboot flashing unlock_critical
After this, you will see a warning message that your bootloader is unlocked and your data is not safe, blah blah... Just ignore it everytime you power on your phone.
Part 2 :
So there are currently two ways to root his phone. Let's start with the first.
Methode 1 : We will use the new temp twrp. Method by me.
1. Download files...
- Download this TWRP.
- Place it in your adb folder.
- Download Magisk-v17.2_a and Magisk-v17.2_b.
- Copy these 2 zips in your phone internal storage.
2. Check current-slot...
- Plugin your phone to you pc
- Navigate to your settigs on your phone.
- Open Developer settings
- Enable Usb Debugging
- A pop up should appear on your phone scren, hit and box and autorize the pc.
- on your pc, open fastboot command prompt, and type "adb reboot bootloader" , your device should reboot to fastboot
- type "fastboot getvar current-slot". Remember if the result is a or b.
3. Root using temporally twrp
- Reboot your phone in fastboot.
- On your pc, open fastboot command prompt, and type "fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-jasmine-20181020.img"
- Your phone now reboot into twrp, it down't flash it, so after a reboot twrp will be gone.
- If twrp ask a password for decrypt data put your phone PIN and validate.
- Click on install and select Magisk-v17.2_a if the result in Step 2. is A, and Magisk-v17.2_b if result is B and swipe to install.
- Then select Reboot.
Now you have Magisk 17.2 installed on your phone, and twrp is gone after reboot. You can select beta in Magisk settings and update to 17.3 if you want.
Methode 2 : We will use patched_boot.img.
1. Where to find patched_boot.img ?
- Go here and check if there is your build version. If yes dowload the patched_boot.img file ( need to be on pc ) and skip to step 2. If not continue.
- If you can't find your correct build patched_boot.img (Because you are on the beta, and nobody share the file or something like that....) you can easily make your own using temp twrp. Go to Bonus part, make your patched_boot.img and continue.
2. Pepare files.
- Copy the patched_boot.img in your adb folder
- Be sure to rename it to "patched_boot.img"
- Download latest Magisk Manager apk here (currently v6.0.1)
- Copy the apk on your phone storage.
3. Install Magisk
- Reboot your phone in fastboot.
- Open a fastboot command prompt on your pc.
- Type "fastboot boot patched_boot.img"
- Your phone will reboot, put your pin....
- Go in your prefer file explorer and Install the magisk apk.
- Now open Magisk Manager app
- Click Install, direct install. Wait for the process
- And click reboot.
Now you have Magisk 17.2 installed on your phone. You can select beta in Magisk settings and update to 17.3 if you want.
Bonus
So, i will show you how to backup your current bot img. And how to make your own patched_boot.img, so people who are on Beta OTA can root there phone without any external help...
1. Backup the boot.img
- Download this TWRP.
- Place it in your adb folder.
- In TWRP, click on "Advanced"
- Click "File Manager"
- Navigate to /dev/block/platform/soc/c0c4000.sdhci/by-name
- You will se a lot of files, and if you look you will see 3 important files, boot, boot_a and boot_b.
- Click on the "boot" file
- Click "Copy File"
- Navigate to /sdcard
- Click the blue arrow and swipe to confirm
- Click reboot
- Copy the file on your pc, and rename it to "boot.img" instead of "boot".
Now you have backup your stok boot.img you can use it for stock or whatever you want....
2. Create the patched_boot.img file
- Download latest Magisk Manager apk here (currently v6.0.1)
- Install the apk on your phone
- Open Magisk Manager
- Go to settings , click Update Channel and select Beta
- Return to home of Magisk Manager
- Click Install, then Boot image file patch ( don't know the correct typo because for me the app is in french, champion du monde !! xD ) and wait for the end of the process.
Done you now create your own patched_boot.img ! Enjoy !!
Part 3 :
So, now i will explain you how to install OTA when you have magisk.
- First, disable Automatic system updates in developer options, so it won't install OTAs without your acknowledgement.
- Open Magisk Manager, click Uninstall, then Restore Images. Don't reboot !
- Now Search for update and wait for the process. BUT do not press the "Restart now" or "Reboot" button !
- Open Magisk Manager, hit Install, then Install to inactive slot.
- Reboot when it's done.
If it don't work (strange) and ota failed, you can find your stock boot.img for your build version here, or backup your boot.img using the[ B]1.[/B] of the Bonus part and flash it using the command "fastboot flash boot_( your current slot) boot.img" (you can check your current slot with command "fastboot getvar current-slot).

Hi
Right now im on OPM1.171019.011.V9.6.13.0ODIMIFE (5 sept 2018) rooted with magisk
I just want to update and re-root, the painless style. I dont want to flash a ****load of stuff to have a functionning phone.
Can anyone confirm that step 3 is ok? Thats the same method than for MI A1, and it was only half functionnal, i dont want to play with fire.
After having killed the IMEI numbers and the persist partition of the A1, it took me 2 weeks to repair, I dont want to **** up this one too. Hell no.

this is safe. but if you want to can just use patched boot method.
I used the method described in Step 3 to install the September OTA (V9.6.13.0) and re-install Magisk. It worked like a charm, but I am trying to repeat the method to install the October update without success. The OTA updater downloads the update, and starts installing it, but it fails miserably every time.
I have even completely uninstalled Magisk and flashed the img from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/others/files/MiA2/
But It does not work, the OTA installer always fails.
I'm clueless, what can I do?

it's because during the ota process, the current slot change. but you can back to stock September ROM, then update. and after that root using my second post https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/guide-2-minutes-magisk-installation-t3856980/amp/

I have not been on this site since posting my guide, i do want to let any future people reading this know that, I am not a professional. everything in this guide is using stuff from other peoples threads.... this thread is just step by step directions on how i rooted (and installed TWRP on) MY lg k7 (MetroPCs). Also i had to root before i unlocked the boot loader. Which is not safe, you should probably unlock the boot loader before you root, but i couldn't figure out how to unlock it without root access.

G) open terminal emulator
H) type "su" without the quotations
(everything typed in the terminal is case sensative)
I) type "sh /sdcard/mrw/root.sh" without the quotations
J) you might see a few errors, that is fine
K) wait until it says finished
L) when SU opens, select "update" "install" or what ever pops up
M) when it asks to uninstall, uninstall it, it is not uninstalling SuperSU it is uninstalling Kingroot,
O) if 30 minutes pass and it is still uninstalling then exit the app and then reboot the phone
DO NOT STOP HERE ~ YOU HAVE TO UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADER, and OPTIONALLY FLASH TWRP
Step Nine: Unlocking The Bootloader
A) refer to step one and double check the OEM unlock is enabled and USB debugging is turned on
(If not then please enable them)
B) search quick boot on the google play store download the first app it should be a circle with a lightening bolt
C) open quick boot
D) when asked to "allow root access?" tap allow
E) if an add pops up close it with the ex in one of the corners
F) tap on the word boot loader
G) at the top of your phone you should see " * Welcome To Fast Boot Mode : "
H) now go to your SDK dir, in my case it is C:\Users\USER\Documents\SDK
I) hold shift, then right click on the "platform-tools" folder, then select "open command window here"
J) in the CMD window type "fastboot devices" - without quotations
(everything is case sensative)
K) then type "fastboot oem unlock" - without quotations
L) then type "fastboot getvar unlocked" if that doesn't work try "fastboot getvar" or "fastboot getvar unlock" to confirm if it is unlocked
(if non of the getvar commands work you did something wrong, and i wont be able to help you, but if you followed the tutorial you shouldn't have any issues as these are the exact steps i took)
M) then type "fastboot reboot"
LEAVE THE CMD OPEN OR YOU WILL HAVE TO REPEAT steps H-I
Step Ten: Flashing TWRP
A) go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/qa-metro-pcs-lg-k7-lgms330-t3331678 and click on the latest download for twrp for me it is BETA1
if the links on that page dont work then use the links here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66282525&postcount=42
B) extract the download into your SDK folder on your PC
C) in the sdk CMD window from Step nine
D) type "fastboot devices" - without qoutation
E) ~optional, HIGHLY RECOMENDED~
1)type fastboot "boot twrp-image-3.img" - this will boot up twrp WITHOUT flashing it, just so you can make sure everything is working right
in my case it was twrp-image-3.img check your twrp file name and replace fastboot boot twrp-image-3.img with
fastboot boot INSERT YOUR FILE NAME HERE.img
2)in twrp tap reboot>bootloader
F) when bootloader mode opens back up
G) type "fastboot flash twrp-image-3.img" or "fastboot boot INSERT FILE NAME HERE.img" depending on your file name
H) when finished flashing type "fastboot reboot"
Step eleven
A) follow instructions on step one
B) the reason you must do this is because when you flash TWRP it erases your entire phone and resets it
Congrats you have Successfully Rooted, Unlocked Your Bootloader, and Flashed TWRP, to your LG K7
Well done, my friend. Well done indeed.

I can confirm this method works. The only different thing i did was purchase Supersume pro from playstore. Worked like it said it would. The Ls675 is rootable. But no bootloader unlock or bootloader at all for that matter. Im running MS330 with TWRP full root and have twrp backups and fastboot flashable backups via flashfire....

While it does work I can find no method using the buttons to get into twrp all the instructions I find for recovery fail so I can only boot back to it after the phone boots, thus it's worthless at this point. Also the command is fastboot flash recovery imgagename.img and you'll need to remove kingroot from administrators to uninstall.
Anyone else been able to boot directly into twrp from the off position?

I'm no developer by any means but I have Linux and windows on my laptop. I'm familiar with kernel building on bunt and have the source code for MS330 on my laptop. I have a backup of my boot img as well. If you can get to fastboot u can probably flash my boot img if you want me to send it. I have recovery img as well which is twrp. Of other interest 5.1 is very dendent on Google apps and move app updates to the system via TB or Link2SD fails more than it succeeds, shows they moved but app inaccessible afterwards hence brick. Mine went down trying to integrate play services and reinstalling from adb didn't help. FYI if you relock the BL it'll lock the phone with a security error too. Moving play services causes unending error screens so you can't really see if it's done moving, but I waited a good 5 minutes before reboot. Issue on fails could have been the system not being r/w. Needless to say backup, backup, backup as I hadn't because I've never had a serious issue doing that and considered it a trivial task. Anyone had good success with integrating updates and cache? Anyone restored from twrp yet?

Can you figure out why we can't boot to recovery via hardware buttons? That's critical for tinkering and testing on the go since I always have my phone but not my laptop for booting into recovery with adb. Not sure exactly where to look, probably start with a search for the words "recovery" and "safe mode" for the buttons and "security error" in the boot.img files.

If your rooted u can dl a reboot recovery app on the play store I have one that works like a charm. But im gonna take a look through Linux at the kernel options using make menu_config and see if there's anything I can see in there.

Thanks again. For anyone that has a soft bricked LG K7 see this man! He brought my S#!? To life through teamveiwer. Thanks again. From my LG K7.
Maybe just my experience, but regarding step 10. I had to have the twrp image in SDK>platform tools, also when you get to fastboot flash twrp-image-3.img, I couldn't get it to work, until I typed it as fastboot flash recovery twrp-image-3.img. Hope this helps anyone else getting errors during this part. Thanks for the writeup.

Step 6 : Install TWRP
Step 7 : Install a custom ROM with TWRP
Step 8 : Install Gapps (google apps)
Step 1 : Prepare environment
Create a directory where you're gona extract download files (avoid space in the directory path).
Download : adb and fastboot from google
Extract it on your previous created directory.
Download usb drivers and install it
Enable developer mode in your Z2 PRO (link if your don't know how to do it)
Connect your phone on your computer
On the directory C:/yourDirectoryPath/platform-tools maintains shift + rigth click and "Open command window here"
Type adb devices
If your see a line below "List of devices attached" your adb is OK
Note the number somewhere, it's your device serial number.
On the phone type *#06# and note somewhere IMEI numbers in case something went wrong during flashing
Step 2 : Install ZUI 2.5.x (recommended before installing Nougat custom ROM)
For this part I use the m_atze tutorial that you can find here. Check it for me detailed steps.
If you are on windows 8, 8.1 or 10, you have to disable driver verification (some people didn't disable driver verification and it works as well)
For windows 10 with anniversary update : you just have to run a cmd as admin and enter bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON then reboot your computer (your windows will be in test mode)
For other cases check this link
Then
Download QPST flashtool
Install QPST flashtool and reboot your computer
Download and extract ZUI ROM 2.5.x (you maybe need to rename the directory where the ROM is because it could be too big)
Launch QFIL application as administrator
Go to Configuration -> FireHostConfiguration. 1-change device type to UFS. 2-check reset after download checkbox
Click on "Load content" and browse the contents.xml from the ZUI ROM 2.5.x extracted files
On the adb console you opened earlier, enter adb reboot edl
The QFIL page should look like this
Click on "Download content" to flash your phone
The final screen should like this
If any problem, there is an FAQ
Your phone is gonna reboot, congratulation, you're flashed your phone with ZUI 2.5.x ROM.
Once the phone boots up it will be in Chinese again. To get your phone back in English :
On the welcome screen tap the bottom of the screen below the highlighted blue text to skip the ZUK login.
To change the language back to English go to Settings.
In the third section choose the last entry. "Advanced Settings" (the gears symbol).
Choose the 2nd menu item.
Choose the first menu item and select English.
Now check update and install it if needed trough this app. If the check is green, it's ok.
Re-enable developer mode and debugging
Step 3 : Unlock bootloader (to be able to boot on TWRP)
This step is almost a copy past of section 2 of meister guide
This step gonna void your Lenovo warranty and wipe your data
Step 3.1 : Get the unlock bootloader from Lenovo
In order to unlock the bootloader you will need to got the zuk website, where you need to register first before you can request to unlock the bootloader.
So go here : https://passport.zuk.com/wauthen3/wauth/jsp/register.jsp (use google translate)
Select Email Registration (upper right corner) and fill in the required data
You will receive an Email with a confirmation link.
Now that you are registered, log in and than go to http://developer.zuk.com/bootloader (use google translate)
Click on Carry On.
On the next page select your phone type Z2 Pro.
Enter your serial number (8 digits) (you can find it on Settings -> About -> Status. If your serial is not 8 digit, add 0 to the end to make a 8 digit number)
Enter an email address where to send the unlock image. It seems that the email address here has to follow some rules. ([email protected] or @Web.net seems to work. A domain name with a hyphen (-) seems to cause problems, i use a @hotmail.com mail adresse and it worked)
Check the 2 check boxes and click SUBMIT
If successful you get a message that the image has been sent to your email address. No message means something went wrong. Likely the email address was not approved.
Save the email attachment from ZUK you requested earlier (named unlock_bootloader.img) into C:/yourDirectoryPath/platform-tools/ (next to adb.exe)
Step 3.2 : Unlock bootloader
On adb console enter adb devices to check if your device is still connected
Next enter adb reboot bootloader and your phone gonna reboot in bootloader mode
Next enterfastboot -i 0x2b4c flash unlock unlock_bootloader.img (if you got error "target did not report max-download-size" change from usb 3.0 to usb 2.0 port and / or try to turn on "enable_usb_2.0" via
Developer Options)
You should see
Code:
target reported max download size of 1610612736 bytes
sending 'unlock' (0 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.031s]
writing 'unlock'...
OKAY [ 0.063s]
finished. total time: 0.094s
Then enter fastboot -i 0x2b4c oem unlock-go
You should see
Code:
...
OKAY [ 0.031s]
finished. total time: 0.031s
You phone is gonna reboot (or reboot it manually)
Change the phone language to english and re enable debugging.
Step 4 : Boot on TWRP to root the phone
Download TWRP 3.1 for Zuk Z2 PRO here and extrat TWRP..... .img next to adb.exe in platform-tools folder
Download SuperSu here

Then enter fastboot -i 0x2b4c boot TWRP3.1.0.0_ZUK_Z2_pro.img to boot in TWRP image
Click on "Keep read only"
Go to install and browse to SuperSu zip.

Then enter fastboot -i 0x2b4c boot TWRP3.1.0.0_ZUK_Z2_pro.img to boot in TWRP image
Go in backup and check all checkbox
Swipe to backup
Reboot the phone
From your computer browse your phone internal memory and copy your backup from TWRP/Backup/XXXXX to a directory in your computer
Step 6 : Install TWRP
In adb cmd enter adb reboot bootloader
Then fastboot flash recovery TWRP3.1.0.0_ZUK_Z2_pro.img to install TWRP on your phone
Then fastboot reboot
Then adb reboot bootloader
Then with volume keys select Recovery Mode and enter in Recovery Mode by pushing power key
TWRP will start
Reboot your phone
Step 7 : Install a custom ROM with TWRP
Download ROM from https://uploadfiles.io/55ffa
Copy paste ROM zip file in your phone internal storage
In adb cmd enter adb reboot bootloader
Then with volume keys select Recovery Mode and enter in Recovery Mode by pushing power key
Click Wipe and swipe to wipe. Do NOT reboot your phone.
Go back in TWRP main menu and click Install. Browse the ROM zip file
Swipe to install
Reboot your phone
When your phone reboot, it's in chinese. Click on the texte in the right bottom corner and then select your language.
During the phone configuration, do not connect wifi (in my case the phone configuration crashed when I connected to a wifi)
When you finished phone configuration reboot to get notification in your language
Step 8 : Install Gapps (google apps)
Download Gapps from https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/gapps-dynamic-gapps-t3487192
Copy the zip file in your phone
Reboot in TWRP
Install Gapps through TWRP
Reboot your phone
At this point my Google Play Services crashed each reboot. So needed to
Reboot in TWRP
Wipe cache
Now it works !
You can install other ROM with this method but I only tested with this one.
Enjoy
First of all, thank you for your help.
I followed this tutorial from start to finish without encountering any unexpected events. It is rare to say so!
Small points:
Step 1:
*- Think of connecting the phone before the command "adb devices", it's stupid but I had not done it!
Step 2:
*- I did not need to change my driver settings on Windows 10.
*- I had to run the QFIL application as an administrator.
*- I had to rename the directory where the ROM was because the name was too big.
Step 3.1:
*- I have a serial number on 7 characters, you must add "0" at the end to make 8 characters.
*- My Gmail address worked smoothly.
Step 4:
*- The SuperSU link did not work, I took this one: http://downloadmirror.co/Utz/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.79-20161211114519.zip
*- Some reboot at home also, it seems to be normal.
Step 7:
*- I took the ROM "Resurrection Remix", no problem with another ROM.
Step 8:
*- I also had a crash of Google apps, I also did a wipe and it works now. It looks normal too.
Thank you again for your help!
Glade I could help !
Thanks for your feedback, I'm gonna update the tutorial

I don't know sorry :/
Maybe downgrade to 2.3.x is more secured...
For my information, why do you want to install the MK60.1 ?

So far it's the only stable official release from Mokee.
Mk60.1 have exactly the same bugs like Mk71.1. so no need to use mk60.1. mk71.1 is pretty stable btw.
So far quite happy running Mokee. Is there an easy way to root as well?

Mokee was quite good.
Yesterday I installed this ROM : https://forum.xda-developers.com/zu...tom-rom-zuk-z2pro-resurrection-remix-t3579113
I prefer this ROM because you can custom it in many ways.
Since yesterday it's stable.

can't hurt to have an updated guide for those too lazy to read.. so many posts about "this guide is out of date" or "i dont have time to read 6 pages about other people's experiences"
Thanks for this updated guide, this was helpful. Although, in step 4 it looks like you forgot to mention flashing SuperSu.

Great Job compiling all the information in one place. Appreciate your hard work. This should be helpful to many.
You could even update this to include flashing of Custom ROMs. And a little bit about the slot change etc. That way the guide would almost be complete.

I was asking if there was any affect to the rooting ability of the device if you did vs didn't use the -w command. I completed my update of my phone. I never like a dirty update since it only causes problem later on. I tested it without the -w switch and everything worked (kept my data, but as mentioned dirty flashes = no good), so I went back and repeated the steps with the -w switch. Everything works like a charm. Only issue I have noticed is that Netflix is no longer compatible with my device?!? Like not really sure why, but cant install it from the play store. Will contact Netflix about this later today.

Gotcha, there are no 'effects to the rooting ability of the device'.
However, some apps will not work unless you 'hide Root' with Magisk i.e. Android Pay, Netflix's, etc.
Did you root with Magisk?

I dunno about you but I have magisk hide on and hid the playstore and a few other processes but if its checking your phone at a point before you can enable magisk hide and storing the results wouldn't it not make much difference? I ask this because magisk hide or not, netflix doesnt show up. Even on a clean boot its not listed as an app I can restore. The simple fix for me is to restore a back up or simply download from apk mirror.
I would say a BIG tks: I've been rooting my phones for years and this one is definitely a rollercoaster of information and success for me (boot loop over boot loop, random crash, random bugs... after following many guides..)
Will try this one (had to factory reset again yesterday: phone would not boot up).
One (major) thing is missing here: what to do with the slot a/b? I had crashes that automatically switched from one slot to the other slot, confusing the hell out of (the retarded?) me. It's still not clear what I'm suppose to double flash or not....
Tks!

You're welcome!
It would be nice to have step by step instructions for rooting.
Here's what I have thus far. The final root steps are not complete:
I. Enable Developer Options:
1. Go to your device Settings.2. Select “About phone” » tap seven times on “Build number”.3. This will enable Developer options under Settings.4. Go back to Settings » scroll down to Developer options5. Enable OEM Unlock: Open “Developer options” menu » enable OEM Unlock6. Enable USB Debugging: Open “Developer options” » scroll down to Debugging menu, enable “USB Debugging”
II. Unlock Bootloader - This will wipe your Pixel
1. Install ADB Installer 1.4.3 - http://downloadmirror.co/29Xn/adb-setup-1.4.3.exe2. Connect your Pixel device to the PC with a USB cable.3. Open a command window on your PC.4. Boot your Pixel device into bootloader mode using the following command:adb reboot bootloader[NOTE: You may get a request to authorize USB debugging on the device, accept it.]5. Once your dveice is in bootloader mode, issue the following command to unlock bootloader:fastboot flashing unlock6. You’ll get a confirmation screen on your Pixel device. Press Volume Up button to highlight Yes and press Power button to select it.7. You need to boot into system now, either press Power button to reboot OR issue the following command:fastboot reboot8. During reboot, your Pixel device will go through a factory reset and then finally boot into system.
[MISSING STEPS FROM THIS POINT ON]
III. ROOT
1. Download factory image for your model: https://developers.google.com/android/images- INSERT DESCRIPTION OF EACH - AT&T, Verizon, etc2. Extract the ZIP file3. Open the folder, locate the 2nd zip file, and extract it as well4.- Inside that folder, locate: boot.img and copy it to your Pixel 2
5. Download 2 Magisk filesMagisk Manager 5.4.1 APK- https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4324973&d=1509987367Magisk 14.4 - https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4324974&d=1509987379
6. Download a File Manager app from the Play Store, then find and install the Magisk APK???
7. Use Magisk to patch the boot.img file, which will then be found in /storage/emulated/0/MagiskManager/
Next steps??8. From command line to the ADB folder:adb reboot bootloaderfastboot flash boot patched_boot.imgPress power button to reboot

Yes, then recopy the APK back after the wipe.
Worked great. No issues. Nice work.
Bootloop?
So I get to the last step and flashed the patched_boot.img. The phone reboots, and I seem to be stuck at a perpetual "G" and progress bar. Looks like a boot loop. I waited 5 minutes hoping it would proceed with boot. I then tried to flash the stock boot.img. Still same apparent boot loop. I had to flash the stock restore image to get going again. Am I being impatient? Should it immediately boot up?
once magisk creates patched_boot.img ... do I need to copy this file and place it inside the ADB folder on the computer? if so, which folder do I drop this file in?

The Magisk post in the section for ROMs , Kernels and other Development has full instructions on how to root with Magisk. It worked for me.
There's also another post in here where someone goes through steps to root, add a kernel, and get V4A running (to mixed success as normal), and although he uses steps different than the first post I referenced, it's working for him.
Magisk isn't producing out a boot.img
I'm using version 5.4.3
Once I select the boot.img. it just goes back to the magisk home screen and says "downloading magisk v14.zip"
What an Im I doing wrong
Full disclosure- many of these steps are just copy/pasted from the Magisk install instructions and other areas online, just thought I'd post a full set of instructions for our device. There might be easier steps or I might have added additional unnecessary steps, please let me know and I can update. I'm just posting what worked for me. I also don't like installing things from sketchy fileshare sites, so I provide the way to get everything from official sources.
This is to get root via Magisk on a stock Moto Z4 (I have the Retail model, don't know anything about Verizon or other models). You will need to have a knowledge of how to do some advanced tasks, such as using ADB/Fastboot, installing APKs from unknown sources, and installing drivers on your computer. Google is your friend (or DuckDuckGo in my opinion) I am not responsible for bricked phones, thermonuclear war, etc. This is just a helpful guide.
You might as well start on the latest OTA since during the unlock process you'll have no choice but to erase all your data, make sure you're fully updated and backup your data.
HOW TO ROOT FROM STOCK:
First, you must unlock your bootloader. WARNING: THE UNLOCK PROCESS WILL ERASE ALL OF YOUR DATA!
Follow the instructions on the Motorola website to check if your bootloader can be unlocked and retrieve the ID codes
One step Motorola doesn't mention is that you must enable OEM unlocking from the Developer Options. If you don't know how to get to Developer Options, you'll need to google it. It's very easy, and I think it's a good "test" to figure out if you should even be trying to root your phone
Once you have your unlock code, unlock your bootloader according to the instructions here. EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE WILL BE DELETED AT THIS POINT!
Next, you must patch the stock boot image.
You will need to retrieve the boot image, please follow the instructions at the bottom of this post on how to download the full OTA archives.
Once you have the stock boot image, copy it to your phone's storage
You need to install Magisk Manager on your phone (it doesn't need to be rooted at this point- it's just needed to patch the boot image) Download the latest Magisk Manager from the official Magisk thread here
Tap "Advanced Settings" in Magisk Manager and check "Recovery Mode"
Press Install → Install → Select and Patch a File, and select your stock boot/recovery image file
Magisk Manager will patch the image, and store it in [Internal Storage]/Download/magisk_patched.img
Copy the patched image from your device to your PC. If you can’t find it via MTP, you can pull the file with ADB:
adb pull /sdcard/Download/magisk_patched.img
Now, flash the modified boot image
Plug your phone in, make sure USB debugging is enabled, open a command line in the same folder that your patched image is in (or, you can put in the full path on step 3 rather than just the filename).
Easiest way to get to fastboot mode is the command (you can also use the volume key trick if you'd rather or if you're having trouble with ADB):
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Then all you have to do is:
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
To reboot:
Code:
fastboot reboot
You should be done now! You can check the status of root from Magisk Manager and refer to Magisk documentation for any help with that. You may also want to disable Automatic System Updates from Developer options to prevent issues when updates are released.
HOW TO DOWNLOAD STOCK OTA ZIP & RETRIEVE BOOT IMAGE:
First, you need to download LSMA, Moto/Lenovo's software for managing and recovering phones
Once the software is installed, open it and go to the "Flash" tab, hit "Switch to Upgrade", and connect your phone
When you connect, it will check for an update (Sometimes it will not have the latest update even if you are offered an update on your phone. You'll need to wait until it shows up here)
Download the update
LSMA will download a zip file to C:\ProgramData\LMSA\Download\RomFiles, and once completed it will automatically extract the ZIP. (If you want the full ZIP image for any reason, you must copy it to a different location before the extraction completes, LSMA deletes the zip once the extraction finishes. Just have the window open until the download completes, as soon as the ZIP file appears copy it to another folder, it will not interfere with extraction.)
Retrieve the boot.img from the download folder
HOW TO UPGRADE TO NEW OTA, PRESERVING ROOT & DATA:
Now you can try following the Magisk instructions since our device has an A/B partition layout, but I wasn't able to get it to work, usually the upgrade fails validating the current image so I have an alternate set of steps that did work for me. Backup your data just in case though.
You'll need to wait until it shows up here)
Download the update, but don't install it yet. The program will download a zip file to C:\ProgramData\LMSA\Download\RomFiles, and once completed it will automatically extract the ZIP.
Retrieve the boot.img from the download folder and copy it to your phone
Patch the boot.img in Magisk Manager per the steps above
Now proceed with installing the update in LSMA (It will say it's going to erase your data, but it does not).
Your phone will reboot to the bootloader and LSMA will flash the update
Once the update is finished and your phone reboots for the final time, close LSMA.
Reboot to the bootloader again:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Flash boot:
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
Reboot:
Code:
fastboot reboot
Upon reboot, you're now updated, and root & data is preserved.

First, you need to download LSMA, Moto/Lenovo's software for managing and recovering phones

Upon reboot, you're now updated, and root & data is preserved.

for those who try to install security patch...
I recommend you do the following in case you wish to keep your root and others in the phone.
as usual, back it up in case...
connect to the lenovo software (above) and download the security patch (you can do it thru the rescue step as the program will prompt "no new software" if you try to check "upgrade software".
once the security patch download is complete, keep a copy of the boot.img and load it on the phone to do usual magisk thing.
but be patient...
keep this new magisk edited boot elsewhere and reflash the original boot to your phone so that the error message in making the patch update disappears.
once you reverted to the original boot (it goes without saying the usual fastboot reboot), make the OTA security patch update.
you will find that the root is gone but the phone (everything).
now is the time to flash the magisk edited boot (the new boot from the update patch) to your phone and voilaaaaa!
your root is back + the security patch applied.

Hey, I found that using root on the latest security patch makes the WiFi stop working. Like the switch won't even turn on, and it can't scan for new networks. I know that it's not a hardware problem, because I reverted to the March security update and WiFi works. Is anyone else having the no WiFi issue on the latest security patch while using root?
