Does anybody know a good way to change the wifi country code? I was traveling in Europe recently, and I stayed in a hotel where all of the wifi channels were in European bands not used in the US. I'm looking for a way to change my US Mediapad to accept European wifi channels. I've seen some apk's around that are supposed to do this, but they're all pretty old. It should be possible to do it by modifying a system file.

I live in southern africa where its still going to be some time before the G1 is launched.
It would be possible for me to order the US G1 from ebay but I am concerned about the network band because firstly I want to know that the phone will at least work on the regular 2G network (1800 in my country) for the usual phone calls and then of course I want to be able use 3G for Internet access. I don't know the 3G frequency in my country but the service has been available for over a year already.
Is it a software restriction which can be resolved by updating the firmware at a later stage or is there actually different hardware for the model being released in the US and those being released in other countries like the UK?
Thanks!
Take a look here to find the UMTS frequency that your carrier uses (of course, call to double check):

It hasn't exactly been confirmed yet, but the G1 is supposed to support both 1700+2100 (UMTS IV) and 2100 (UMTS I) networks. Since African carriers are all using 2100, you should have no problems getting a 3G signal without having to worry about hardware/software compatability. You should also confirm that your carrier will provide the approrpiate connection settings in case you need to set it up manually.
The G1 also comes with quad-band GSM/EDGE, so you will certainly be able to receive 2G signals.
However, keep in mind that the first batch of G1s will be locked to T-mobile. You will need to make sure that you get a carrier-unlocked device in order to use your carrier's SIM.

Thanks, that makes me feel more comfortable with ordering a G1 from the US.
I was just concerned because I read somewhere that the US version does not work in AUS so there obviously are problems in some countries with the bands. The UK version will apparently work in Aus.
Again, I want to emphasize that you need to make sure you have an unlocked version. When you first turn on the phone, you are required to log into gmail (or create a new account) over a 2G/3G network. If you are unable to login (because the phone has not been unlocked to work on your carrier's 2G/3G), you will not be able to use the G1 for anything other than emergency calls. You won't even be able to enable WiFi to handle the login.

If at all possible, I would advise waiting at least until some other folks have tried bringing the G1 to other networks so that you know what exactly you will have to do to get one working on your carrier.
Thanks again, I will definitely ensure that I do not purchase a network locked G1.
Although I bought my Galaxy S through Optus it looks to me that Wi-Fi is not properly set to work on channels 12 to 13. It would accept any channel between 1-11 but not beyond. Is there a setting where I could change that, or do I need to call Optus to change it?
Channels 12 - 14 are banned from private use in North America, so they may be disabled on the phone beacuse of its ability to create a mobile wifi hotspot?
Annoying for those of us outside the US, but seen it happen on other devices and can't see a solution other than changing the channel on the router, unless someone more techy can come up with a hack?
Managed to find the file that specify teh country code for the wireless net
nvram_net.txt
But I could not change it as it is a read only. Anyone has an idea if the Country code = EU can be change to JPN so we can get the 13th channel?
Nice to see a new version of GSF, wbaw.
I'm with T-Mobile UK and GSF r3 constantly reports the network operator as "T-Mobile" when roaming (to Orange in the UK or to any other operator when out of the country).
SIMs from other operators work fine and show the correct name of the network operator to which I am currently connected.
I was getting this same problem with all previous versions of GSF too, so it isn't something new in r3.
PS. I would have posted this in the main GSF thread but I'm still too new on xda to post there.
It's probably to do with the RIL files, I used the versions from the Finnish Saunalahti rom.
If I use a different version of those files then it causes a more serious problem for people using MVNO networks (virtual network operators that rent their services from a real network) - then it'll always tell them they're roaming even when they're on their home network, so it makes the options to restrict roaming useless.
So it's a 'can't fix / wont fix' bug I'm afraid.
Unfortunately there is no available source code for the parts of the rom that control that behaviour. It's a bug that only ZTE could fix properly (don't hold your breath).
OK. Thanks for the reply and the explanation.
A workaround is to install Phono - this correctly shows the actual Network Operator you are connected to (but it does mean consuming some resources with another application running/installed).
I guess that Phono somehow bypasses the RIL restriction?
Does it cause any real problem other than not showing the correct network name?

Most of the time it doesn't, but I was visiting Cyprus recently, and in several places (e.g. in the capital, Nicosia) you regularly pick up a signal from network operators in northern Cyprus who are not regulated by the EU roaming price caps.
When connected to operators in the south T-Mobile charges 36p to make a call, 11p to receive, sending a text is 10p, and 3G data is 20p/MB. But when you are connected to an operator from the north, it is charged as if you were outside of the EU: making and receiving a call is £1.50, sending a text is 40p, and 3G data is charged at £7.50/MB. Because the network operator is always shown as "T-Mobile" it isn't easy to know to whom you are connected and how much you will be charged.
Roaming close to the border in Cyprus is a fairly extreme case, I admit, but, nevertheless, it is an example of when it matters (financially) to know to whom you are connected. I don't have similar experiences elsewhere to report but this could also be a problem at other EU borders (e.g. Geneva).
KonstaT (developer of Swedish Snow), wondered whether there was any correlation between the operator getprop values reported by the phone and the operator name reported by GSF and the other ROMS based on GSF or using the Saunalahti RIL files. We didn't come to any conclusions but you may find the posts interesting:

Hello ,
I bought a SM900F from UK a while ago and it was unlocked. I was capable of using 4G network there easily with no problems, but recently I have come to Dubai and am not able to hop on the 4G network . I have checked all the settings and made sure I had the 4G sim/ 4G data bundle and so on , but still same problem.
As per Wiki : Etisalat United Arab Emirates 1800 3 FDD September 2011 [500]
Etisalat United Arab Emirates 2600 7 FDD September 2011 [520]
My operator provides 4G on 1800 and 2600 Frequencies which are supported by SM900F. Just to clarify , this unit had never been locked .
So now im sitting here confused on what I need to do to get my 4G working , Im always connected to H and H+ .
Thanks in Advance ,
Nylem
Try to ask operator to give you his APN settings!
Settings - more networks - mobile networks - ap
Thanks for the reply ,
I have done that but still no hope

Your phone should support those LTE bands.
Confirm that the band /frequency information isn't outdated.
Are you in an area where the carrier doesn't have LTE coverage?
Open a support ticket to investigate if the carrier has provisioned your account /SIM correctly for LTE.
Look at the various online forums and find out if others are getting LTE in your location.
Set what the LTE signal strength is in the S5 service menu.
Set a preference for LTE in the service menu.
Possibly you are getting 4G, bit the onscreen icon is just incorrect?
Try updating or changing your 900F modem.

Thanks for the swift response mate ,
1) Band/Frequency are all compatible with the phone
2) The whole city is LTE covered ( specially mine that I live in the center ) .
3) Already working on a ticket with the carrier , but they say problem is from my side
1) I set the LTE Signal , Lost all connection
2) I put bearer as LTE , Lost all connection
3) Could be a possibility
Can you kindly forward me or show me the path to where I can change my 900F modem to a more international one , Thanks a bunch !

Something is probably misconfigured or misprovisioned. But regardless, the issue will only be solved by paying attention to details and a process of elimination (of the possible causes).
The most productive single thing that you could do at this point would be to borrow a known working LTE SIM from a neighbour and see if works in your handset. Whatever the result, it would narrow down the possible culprits.
Also, don't assume that the frequencies are correct. Confirm with the carrier that they haven't changed or added new LTE bands.
Make the effort to find out what forums your carriers' customers usually frequent and look at recent posts there for seredipitious insights that you won't find elsewhere.
Don't dismiss the icon idea out of hand. Are your speeds indicative of an LTE connection?
You don't need a more "international" modem. Just a more current 900F one. Or less commonly, an alternate or older modem if your current one has a bug. Do a forum search for threads about changing modems. There are a lot of them. Don't fixate on this - it's one of the least likely possibilities.
Also consider updating to Android 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 which is said to address some connectivity bugs.

I don't know if anybody has noticed it or not but India region code is not present in the list of region codes in advanced wifi settings. This is preventing me from connecting to company wifi network. Is there any way to fix it?

It never bothered me to connect the wifi network. Check if your company wifi is 5 ghz band. If it is then that's the problem. Because Yureka doesn't support 5 GHz wifi band.
