The Most Stable Pie Roms - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Hello, i would like to ask;
which Pie Based Roms is the most stable? currently im on pixel experience but it has a lot of bugs (audio, front cam) and terrible gaming performance (stuttering, freeze etc) (games like pubg etc)
So which pie based roms is the most stable and have near stock rom performance ?

I am using SyBeria OS 9.0 for 2 weeks now. It's really smooth. I didn't face any lags what so ever. Although, there were few app crashes in the previous version. After an OTA update the app crashes where fixed. I haven't found any major bugs yet. Although there is one bug, the screen cast doesn't work. The phone crashes if tried to connect to a wireless display.
Battery backup is also good. I am a heavy user. The phone easily lasts a full day.
About the camera. I am using the Google Camera v8. And it works flawlessly. The snapdragon camera doesn't work if you wish to flash it.
Also, the google pay app doesn't work. Since its a custom OS and the SELinux is set to permissive.
Features like ambient notification and double tab to wake works fine.
Gaming performance is also very good.
I can play PUBG at HD high with anti aliasing enabled. No lags.
No heating issues as well.

Whats the SOT...and are you using stock kernel?
Charging speed?
---------- Post added at 11:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:16 AM ----------
I am using liquid remix with darkberry kernel...
Battery backup and performance is amazing....
You can also use singh kernel(overclocked both big and little cores) for even better gaming performance

Which Custom ROM are you using and why?

Hi All,
Since acquiring MXP back in Oct 2015, I have stayed away from rooting and flashing custom ROM (something which I did from day one on my Samsung Google Nexus) because I was more or less happy with the out of the box behavior.
But now MXP on Marshmellow has become kind of slow and ofcourse Nougat roadmap is still not clear (whether it will at all come in May).
So now I want to join the wagon.
So it would be immensely helpful if you can mention which custom ROM you are using as daily driver and why sticking to it?
My criteria is primarily smooth performance and decent battery (now it doesnt last 12 hours on full charge).
Thanks in advance
Roy
I tried almost every Nougat rom (Tesla, CM, RR, AOSiP, AOSP Extended) and finally been using AOSP Extended. I feel this is the most stable and smooth one out there. I use Greenify & GlassFish script and easily get over 30-40 hours on a single charge. I don't play any games on my phone, just some web browsing, music, whatsapp etc. It has almost all the customization available too.
Just like you I was sticking to stock
Now after the N delay, tested a few custom roms. From my experience, also in gaming, Aosip with Optimus Kernel and GlassfishCP-Optimus script have the best performance, does not overheat and has near stock battery life.
Instead of Greenify (that's behaving weird and sometimes causing wakelocks) I'd recommend Servicely.
Still not tested but also CypherOS should be worth a test run. It seems like the most stable and lighter rom on paper!
all nougat roms have camera bug,,d camera focus is not so good
using RR M v5.7.4 + coffee kernel v2.2 + xposed +SuperSU v2.79 +SonyMusicSSE ViPER 2505 DolbyAtmos Sony Beats +Busybox 1.26.2 +MusicFX Installer and AudioFX Remover +Moto g4 Camera v6.0.20.6.

Thanks all for your replies - sorry for replying late here.
I have seen Moto G4 Plus camera and I am not too happy with its focus.
Is the same camera app used in Nougat roms as well?
I hope and guess the MXP moto camera app would still work - right?
Thanks again!
i am going to change my stock rom, which custom rom should i choose?
Hello all,
I have been using this ROM with Optimis r20 kernel and latest GlassfishCP script since last 4 days.
This is my first custom ROM in MXP, so I must congratulate the devs who have made this usable as daily driver.
Mostly has been running fine with two odd reboots from Recent screen.
-------------------------------------------- Problem below is fixed ------------------------------
One odd observation-FB is unable to get updates, even within app when in mobile data mode. Works perfectly fine with Wifi. Otherwise mobile data works fine and other social apps work fine in mobile data mode. Any guidance if this makes sense, would help.
--------------------------------------------------- Solution by @manddar --------------------------------
This happened to me as well on almost all ROMs, in my case mms internet access point was setup instead of one which is required for internet, www to be exact for Vodafone India.
Try to switch it and you will be good to go. Alternate method is to remove proxy from access point.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My one of the most important criteria was battery life which has not improved till now. I would still reserve my view on that as it's been only 4 days.
Camera focussing has also been same as before in stock MXP using stock Moto camera app(not g4).
Cheers
Roy.
I primarily use RR as my daily driver. Mainly because it has the most features out of all roms. I like having as much customization options as possible. Battery life is pretty good for me, and the rom is stable and performs quite well.
My second choice would be either AOSP Extended or AOSIP. Both have a lot features as well, and they're very smooth and have excellent battery life.
I don't use any mods or custom kernels.

I don't see such an issue. Maybe you have some hardware issue or a scratched lens. What ROMs did you try?
Any one facing issue with quick charge? It stopped working on my phone
AOSCP because:
-Pixel style;
-Same battery life as stock;
-No bugs whatsoever
I'm on aokp rom since early January and it has been my daily driver ever since. No sudden reboot, no app crashes, everything works fine, bluetooth, gps, moto camera, google camera (I use it only for lens blur effect). maybe someday I'll try the aoscp or the aicp roms.

Game lagging/slow internet

Hi everyone.
These days mostly every C.ROM has game lagging issues.
Whether it's AEX or Tesla.
(I mentioned the name of these two ROMs 'cause these ROMs used to be my favourite ones).
Every ROM lags, some lags high some lags low.
Not only lagging, also there's an internet slow issue.
Which makes it very irritating for a gamer.
(Games such as Clash of Clans, or 8 Ball Pool).
The ROM works fine in daily usage, but at gaming point almost every ROM has issues.
What is causing device to lag while playing games?
Also, why device's internet goes down when playing games or when device is hot?
MIUI ain't has such lagging or internet issues.
(I'm not saying MIUI is best, it's bad at many points such as Memory Management, Notification Management, Heavy UI, Android Updates, Bloated.. But after having so much bad in it, It has stability for no lagging, or internet)
I just wanna ask devs/users, why is it so?
I know, MIUI is stable because of it's kernel, and Xiaomi doesn't release kernel sources.
But when there is no lagging issues in day to day usage, then why is there so much lagging in Games?
Try Mokee 7, no lag in games, i.e. Clash Royale.
Thanks for this post dude...

I'm currently on Miui KitKat Global official (rooted and custom recovery) works like charm.
I tried to use 2 operating system in my phone.
Miui in internal and AOSP Caf 64bit in sd card.
But managing 2 Roms in once is a waste of time.
Deleted sd card and reverted back to normal.

I did it today, flashed Jerrica Kernel for MiUi by Premaca (this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-2/development/kernel-jerrica-v1-1-t3395691). The ROM I've used is: "Version: V8.5.2.0.LHJMIED (MIUI8) - Stable" from official site http://en.miui.com/download-261.html (the developer one takes me to bootlop :/)

Yup bootloop issues have been faced by too many users,
That kernel work's only for older Miui 8 version, miui 8.5etc won't work.
if you're facing lags try one of my favourite trick
Just delete thermal management algorithm that exist on nougat based ROMS, its located at system/etc/thermal-engine.conf. so you will gain no lags when the phone's getting hot. At the cost of more battery drainage but for me that's worth it. Also if you're facing WiFi disconnecting problem try port wifi configuration from MIUI ROM in, system/etc/wifi copy all itu system, and set permission to rw-r-r, make sure you backup the orig file in case you need it. I always that when using nougat based ROM. Now switched to MIUI due to stability. I currently using octopus kernel and double tap 2 wake works like charm on MIUI 8.5.2.0

Which ROM do you recommend for daily use?
Pls describe your experience about your most useable ROM.
Battery, gaming performance, stability, sound quality, other stuffs.
Help each other
(and pls write, which phone you have x720, x722...)
I use Pixel experience ROM at this moment. x722
I like most the interface. It is quite stable and fast rom. The battery is awful like the other Oreo roms. .
Dolby works but there is not too much effect on the sounding.
I dont know why but all of tested 8.1 roms (on my phone) cause random heating at normal use (chrome, youtube etc).
I have tried several roms. here is my experience:
Mokee: for the first times it was like a dream. Fast goood battery, pretty stable. Later it started to go bad. I dont know why.
Lineage: simple rom quite stable battery so-so. Gameing its laggy
Aicp: I had very bad experience. Worst battery draining (about 60% mobile data standby) Donno why.

I got this standby drain alot on aicp so much that I had to put my phone in airplane mode. I've since moved to validus which has amazing battery life . 6+ hours of sot
AOSPExtended is my winning bet. It's extremely fast and configurable without being too much battery hungry. Sound quality is quite good with Dolby/Viper combo, good bass and loud sound, but it distortes a bit at high volume. I haven't used stock EUI nor other roms but Oreo, so I can't compare, but I'm satisfied as it is.
Last update (AEX 5.6) improves battery a lot, I can get over 8h SOT with moderate use (I used to get 7h in AEX 5.5.) Pity seems that it's maintainer has abandoned the project
I have never found a replacement for Turbo2012 EUI Custom Rom 21s v22.
Its by far the most stable and best battery life along with fast fingerprint reading and superior sound and great Camera.
Its over 10 months old and still beats everything else

If you want a the best performance and Android without customization, and no matter the Android's version you should install PARANOID.
The performance simply is of the Nexus but if you want a good ROM with a good perfomance with good battery I recommend you AOISP.

It's not for LEX720, is it?
---------- Post added at 09:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:31 PM ----------
For me, the best I've tested so far for my LEX720 is the Gizrom 1.4. Everything works perfectly. The battery is between 6 and 7 hours a day. If the use is low, it can last up to a day and a half perfectly. Is stable. The games move them without any problem. At the moment everything I've tried in Roms based on LOS has disappointed me quite apart from the simplicity in the interface that I do not like at all. It is much more pleasant to look at the roms based on EUI and it does not reduce any speed. If the comments here do not come out something that I like more, I doubt very much that it changes
I'd chose DOT (by Quavosh). I have very good battery and stable performance. I do not play games in my phone, just web, youtube and Whatsapp/Pinterest/etc.
In my test, AICP its the worst for my X727. Its Duty and battery hungry.
Dot is the best in my opinion. Battery is awesome

Lenovo Z2 plus Best Custom Rom with less heating (40-43°C)And well battery backup

Please any one suggested me which rom (rom + kernel or rom+kernel+cooling mod)i sould flash for better pubg mobile experience with minimum heating issue..and decent battery drain...i flashed many custom rom like pixel experience,r.remix rom, lineage os,droid os,nitrogen os,oxygen os,dot os,pixys os,aex os,aicp rom..and flash ubercool kernel for reduced overheating..but overheating heating issue i can't solved..pls help..how to reduce maximum heating and play pubg smoothly
Msm extended pie. Most of the time temp between 35° to 40°. Best SOT. 5-6 hours. I don't play pubg. So no comment about playing pubg. Sometimes play fifa14. Temp doesn't rise.
ZUI 4 deodexed latest. PUBG tested.
I guess you (OP) haven't searched the forum or paid attention to threads like this, https://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-zuk-z2/how-to/z2-plus-stable-buggy-rom-regular-t3821962
There are many posts already listing setup as per different use cases.
I am using Pixys OS 2.4 (No extra mod, kernel or ROOT) December 2018 releases since last 3/4 months now. Stays well withing ambient temperature of Kolkata while doing most of my use without gaming. PubG heats up the device but then again, I only play PubG indoors so works fine with me.
You can have a look at my review of this ROM here, written almost 4 months ago, still valid since I am with the same setup till now.

There are no perfect ROM with master of all trade. Most of the ROMs are stable enough but being custom, different people likes different ROM based on their requirements, so keep trying to find the suitable and stick with that which full fills your requirements !!
Thanks.

Almost all Q ROMs at the moment for the A1 have everything you want, except for the slow motion. You have to disable Google Voice Match as well too allow other apps to use the microphone so you can't summon the assistant by saying Ok Google. About the TWRP backup, yes, you can go back to your stock Pie ROM with it.
I am currently using DerpFest with Android 10 and I feel it's the best current ROM in terms of updates, features, and stability (only the battery life has gotten a small hit).

I think the Pixel experience Q rom (last version 2020.02.14) is the best ..Battery life avarage 6 hours...Daily use ,game ,social Media ,listen music, watch movie etc..

So if I don't get it wrong, in all the android 10 based roms:
1) does the google assistant not work?
2) slow motion doesn't work?

Slow motion doesn't work, correct, and Google Assistant works but you cannot summon it using 'Ok Google'. You can use other methods of summoning the assistant.

I've used this ROM for a while and I used to get 8-9 hours of SOT on Stock Oreo, 7-8 hours on Stock Pie, and now I only get 5-6 hours on DerpFest. Performance is fine, though. It feels the same as what was on Stock Pie. I haven't tried intensive games on this ROM, but I have tried some 3D applications and performance seemed the same as was on Pie. The phone scores very slightly higher on single core Geekbench, though. The multi-core is the same as on Pie. I'm satisfied on this ROM other than the fact that slow-mo and screen casting do not work at all.
I'm thinking to install Q based rom but i'm using my phone for just playing PUBG Mobile so which Q rom is best in gaming performance
Battery life don't matters

I think all ROMs are equally good, but it's the kernel that matters. You can flash a new kernel and set a different profile for gaming.

Zentom,
