[HELP] Moisture on USB C port without water - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Very annoying, someone on reddit suggested it could be a security update that arrived recently, but for the past 10 days my S8 has not allowed me to charge properly (only if I plug in while rebooting), which is a hassle. This started when the closest to wetting the S8 I did was running a bit and mildly sweating on my pants and maybe up to the phone that was in my pocket.
The phone has since dried completely but the notification is still there, not sure if it's my own problem or a software bug that could have affected others. I'll also try rinsing completely to see if it helps, but since it wasn't wet the first place I have doubts.
Any insights?

Same issue, maybe we need to clean the usb port with Isopropyl alcohol, saw a youtube video showing how the notification dissapeared

Focus charging sound notification

My Focus all of sudden started continuously playing the notification sound that is played when we connect the charger. Even after restart its still there. I took out the battery and when booted the phone started playin the charger connected notification sound.

I have the same problem. Called Samsung and trouble shot the problem with no success. Called AT&T Warranty Support Technical Service and spent a half hour with no success. Was told by AT&T TS:
. Known MS WP7 issue
. MS is working on it
. Will be fixed in upcoming update
. Probably caused by a virus while web browsing (laughed at that one)
. They have seen many complaints about this issue
One guy on YouTube actually had his mini USB plug and connector melt. This issue also does not let your screen shut off. I found that you need to experiment with the unplug sequence when unplugging from PC and charger. Mine does it rarely anymore, if I can remember how I did this I will post.
Theres a hack in the registry that will lower the sound , Im sure you might be able to turn it off from there as well

I also have this problem. I tried replacing the battery, soft & hard resetting. nothing changed. I have tried multiple ways to disconnect and connect the phone to the charger and that doesn't do the trick also. the battery charging indication and beep are constantly playing, so the screen cannot be locked and the battery drains.
After doing a soft reset the phone doesn't stay off, it inmediately comes back on again. The same happens when I remove the batt. The only way for it to stay off is if I remove the battery and wait a while, like a minute and something. I reinsert the battery and the phone stays off.
I looked in MSFT forums and all over the internet and the amount of information is quite limited. No solution has been posted (at least none that I have found).
Also, I cannot exchange the phone 'cause I bought it unlocked over the Internet.
If anyone has any info I am sure that all the affected people will really appreciate it.
Oh. Good to know that I am not alone on this issue. I had searched the net and didnt see anyone with this issue.. I hope this gets solved in the coming update. Cause my Focus all of a sudden at anytime starts doing this. Its embarrassing when this happens in the elevator and public places and especially when you are the only one in ur friends havin a WP7 and others a Android or iPhone.
It so wierd that for any issue the TechSupport people say that 'this issue will be solved in the update'.. I hope it does!!
Hey found this forum while searching for people with this problem - so hey.
My phone (which I bought on eBay) started doing this a couple of nights ago, I eventually got to stop by doing the following (think I read this elsewhere on the net, but don't recall where):
Plug phone into charger (and charger into wall socket).
Unplug the charger from the wall socket.
Unplug the charger from the phone
Plug the charger back into the phone and out again.
Amazingly that worked for me and 3 days later I'm still ok. I've no idea if I just got lucky, or whether that sequence actually does something. Be interested to hear from others.

Hardware issue, not software
Hi all, according to an ATT rep "this is caused by a manufacturing problem where the micro-usb power/sync connector is not always reliably soldered to the PCB". I tend to believe this because none of the software solutions seem to work (rebooting, putting it back to the previous version, etc).
Go to the ATT support forum and seach Samsung. There are a few threads about this issue. I was trying to post the links but I guess since I'm new here, they dont let me.
if it is a hardware defect (which it does seem to be) i'd contact samsung and they should have you send it in for repair/replacement regardless of if you bought it from ebay or CL or whatever, all the phones should still be under 1 year old, and as such, under warranty.
mine did the same thing i had it in my front pocket and it started to rain kinda got the top a little wet... and had the charging port open.... it started dong the charging sound after about an hour.... everthing i did didn;t work.... come to find out i had a piece of lint in the charging port and when it got wet i shorted out...... got the lint out and has been fine.... been three months now and still working great....
It definately has to do with the USB port shorting, i read somewhere that separating the flap inside the micro USB from the wall, it seems if some kind of debris inside the port can short, or also the flap seems to bend if you plug the cable the wrong way.
In mi case it seems the flap was bent, what i did was carefully separate the little flap from the wall, and it worked, the first time it did not work, but i inserted an old simcard in there and left it for a couple hours, it seems it was enough to fix this

"Moisture detected" Bug Causing Charging & VR Issues

So I've had my phone for just over 2 weeks meaning unfortunately, I can't go into Verizon for a quick exchange. So I'm not sure if this is a hardware bug that I should be worried about in the future, but ever since I was playing with my gear VR a few days ago my phone randomly enters VR mode. The display goes max brightness, screen goes all black, little "x" on the corner pops up. Another issue I'm facing is it sometimes gives the moisture detected error and doesn't let me charge my phone normally. Luckily I have a wireless charger, and I was able to get the fast charger to work when I got home. I also put it in some rice for the last two hours before going to work.
My main issue is, I haven't actually gotten the phone wet and this problem started a few days ago when I first setup my gear VR. If it somehow got wet could it stay wet for almost 3 days before giving me the "moisture detected" popup?
Oddly, I had exactly the same problem with mine, it hadn't been wet recently, but started flicking between Fast Charge, Cable Charge and refusing to charge at all with a Moisture Detected warning. Only wireless charging would work. I didn't try plugging into GearVR but I did try to connect the phone to my PC via USB and that didn't work either. This started about 9 days ago, got progressively worse.
I'm not sure what has fixed it (fingers crossed) but I tried two things the morning before it sorted itself out. I blew a hairdryer into the usb port on the cool setting for a few minutes, not enough to heat the phone up but I thought it was worth a try to get rid of any moisture that might have gotten in there. I also reset my Google advertising ID, as I'd been having problems with dodgy "virus warning" adware popups in Chrome and the stock Samsung browsers, even after a factory reset and a Malwarebytes scan. The popups stopped, at roughly the same time the USB charging started working again. I'm not saying it's linked, it might just be a coincidence that the moisture sensor started working at the same time I reset my ad ID, I don't know enough about malware to know if it could mess with the phone's moisture lock software. Possibly the hairdryer has dried some moisture or blown out some residue but it didn't start working until several hours after I tried that, but only a few minutes after the ID reset. Might be worth shot trying both?
NB occasionally when I plugged the charger int he screen would go black with a little white 'x' in the lower corner which switched sides a few times before the moisture warning popped up. That sounds similar to your issue with VR.
I had this issue as well. I used a set of tweezers to slightly push up on the plastic piece that holds the contacts inside the charge port and also lightly scraped the contacts with the tweezers to remove and possible corrosion on them. it seemed to work for me. I would caution anybody who is willing to try this to be very gentle and careful while trying this. this is just what worked for me
Had the same problem with brand new galaxy S8. Turned out to be the car charger. No problem on home charger. Had a spare car charger and problem went away.

Phone Doesn't Recognize Battery(?) Dead.

I have exhausted all of the options I know to do, so I have come to you for other opinions.
My 4 month old Nexus 6P (on Marshmallow) has seemingly died. Yesterday it went from about 50-60% battery life, then the next time I checked it it was off and would not turn back on.
What can it do? On AC Power:
Shows Charging screen (white battery on black)
Will boot as far as 4 Google dots screen, vibrate, then bootloop (usually just goes as far as Google Screen)
Can access & navigate bootloader screen
Can run TWRP (unencrypt drive, and full touch screen capabilities)
TWRP initially says battery 50% then changes to 0% (does the same thing with battery removed)
Immediately turns off when unplugged
Powered from USB port:
red blinking led
Originally I thought it could have been due to being in my pocket during a bit of rain and it happened to get moist. (Moist, as in less water in/on it than my morning shower gets on it.) So I immediately place it in a sealed bag of silica gel for about 15 hours and tested it in the morning with the same results.
Today, having to switched to an old iPhone 5, I grew desperate. I have:
Taken the phone apart (without breaking the rear glass panel - one good thing) and pulled the battery.
Saw no obvious signs of liquid anywhere
Tested battery with multi-meter (reads 4volts)
Unplugged all ribbon cables, cleaned contacts with isopropyl
Cleaned top of mobo, doughter board, any open contacts.
Blow dried all the alcohol/water away
Battery in or out, my results have not changed since yesterday when it all first began. After reading about others with the 6P having mobo and battery issues I believe the rain is simply a red herring. I have ordered a new battery which will be in next week. I have not ruled the motherboard as not the problem yet, but just seems strange to have TWRP work seemingly without issues if that was it. Otherwise I have no options. I bought it at BestBuy, and I am of course rooted, so cannot send it in to Huawei (unless i can re-lock boot loader and hide signs of opening?)
I can not stand this iPhone, any ideas I will gladly attempt. Let me know If I have left out any information.

Edited to make clarifications.
Water Damage(?)
For anyone curious or following, I removed the motherboard and components completely and did see signs of water. There was some corrosion around the front facing cameras and around the CPU (it appears water got in from sim card tray). Soaking the entire board in alcohol did not fix the issue. I have bought a new motherboard which hopefully will do the trick.
I'll update when its all said and done if forum is still open.

Problem with charging - moisture detected in the USB port.

As in the title. Right now I'm experiencing an issue with the 'moisture detected' notification. So long story short I'm on vacation right now in Vietnam (very humid) and yesterday I took my phone to the swimming pool in order to take a few pictures since it is IP68 waterproof. So all was good, wiped the phone clean and it was working perfectly (camera, fingerprint, screen etc.) until I've tried plugging it in. Then it showed the moisture detected notification so I've cleaned the port using cotton wipes, soft toilet paper and tried blowing into the port. It worked and phone did manage to charge to 100% overnight. But today the issue came once again. Tried using small toothpick wrapped in toilet paper in order to properly clean the area around charging port but it didn't manage to fix the problem. I'm honestly out of ideas and best thing for me would be to fix it without having to claim warranty since as I said I'm outside of my country right now. Do any of you guys have any idea how to fix it or encountered the same issue before?
EDIT: Right now my phone is sitting at 9% and I'm running out of ideas on what to do. I've also tried putting it vertically in rice in order to get rid of any moisture from the usb port but it didn't do ****.
Make sure you don't get other debris in the port (rice). If you have a small brush use that. Rubbing alcohol and a pressed qtip can also work. Good luck

I don't have access to a rubbing alcohol and I've tried using qtip as well as small brush to clean the port. The port itself looks clean and I can't observe any signs of moisture.

No phone is waterproof BUT water resistant.
Its meant for accidental drops into water, splashes, rain etc. Not for a day of underwater filming and pictures.
Big lesson learnt here.
Try doing a factory reset, however, with 9% battery, this is a dangerous game.
Did you actually immerse your phone in the swimming pool?
Depending on which model you have, you could also try wireless charging
I think the port is perfectly dry, it must be the software that triggers a time counter with this message, to prevent the user from creating a short circuit.
Wait a few more hours / days and the message should disappear.
As said above, it is not Waterproof but water resistant, it implies such disturbances after a stay in the water

This is a somewhat common problem with the G6. Mine shows this error about once a month and I've never had water near my phone. It is some sort of hardware problem that has nothing to do with water. Try powering down and back up with it plugged into the charger, it may take a few times but that clears it on my unit. You can also try going into developer options and changing the usb port settings to charge only.
Try this
I may have found a temp solution to bypass the LG G6 moisture charge block.
1.Power the phone off completely.
2.Start in Recovery Mode ( Power on by holding Volume Down and Power buttons)
3.Clear Cache.
4.Before the phone reboots hold the buttons to return to Recovery Mode.
5.Select Power Off
6.Have the usb cord connected to a running computer.
7. Plug the cord into the phone while holding Volume Up and Power Buttons to go to Download Mode.
8. Reboot the phone by holding the Recovery Mode Buttons.
9. The phone should boot being nice to the usb cord and should be charging.
10. you may have to repeat these steps to charge the phone in the future, Im able to unhook it from the computer and connect it to a wall charger and it still work fine for at least one charge.
I also got this problem. But until now i think it solve. What i did is, first i use earbuds to clean the inner but it still show the warning.. Then i put vertically in rice for 30 minutes.. And it still show the warning. Lastly i used isopropyl alcohol pad to clean the insert of usb using toothpick. And the warning not showing off until now and i can charge the phone regularly...

Which would be fine, but the notification wakes the screen up so I'm losing battery throughout the day like crazy...
I solve the problem with this: go to settings-general-apps-right upper corner dots-show system-app lg system server- storage- clear cache and confirm. Thats are all.
Happens to me a lot when I'm working outside in the rain and the phone is in my pocket. What I do and it works everytime for me, I use a hair dryer on high aimed into the port holding the phone port side down so any water will drip out. Do it for about 30 secs and plug your phone it, it should work.

I got the same exact problem, first the humidity sensor error, and then the battery icon the continuously changes to charging and not.
I've solved the first with alcohol and toothtpic, but not the second one.
When I restart it, it doesn't do it for a while, and then it comes back.
I already did:
- night in rice
- toothpick and Water with alcohol
- poured alcohol in the port and then cleaned it
- WD40
Any further solutions from the Pro member?
It does charge when off, but the the battery icon starts changing back and forward....

I agree with what they say. The water residues that can not come out due to the pressure difference will come out with new water. Put pure (bottled) water in a bowl and let it stand for 5-10 minutes, quickly remove it from the water (vertical) and dry it. Tap water can cause scale formation. If the first attempt fails, try again and try to shake the phone in the towel.
Try to put your phone without sim card slot for a night in rice or moisture balls and try the haïr dryer
Had the same problem for few weeks, finally it disappeared, i guess dried off. in a mean time, try to shut down the phone unplugged, start again and plug the power in when LG logo appears on the screen. worked for me, try different timing until it works. Needs to be plugged in before phone finished boot
Best and easy way to resolve Moisture detected check USB port
I just had this issue about 15 mins back. Was worried on how to resolve it and hence searched for solution on XDA.
I also tried to take a towel with threads tied open on the ends rolled the treads end and pushed into the charging port and cleaned it for few seconds and it worked. I now dont see that error anymore.

I have it too. why the **** does LG have the right to do this , basiclly killing the phone for moisture , it's not that high a volatage. mine is from wearing in my coat and sweating . this will be my last LG ever , anyone know other phones that refuse to charge so i can avoid buying that brand there goes 700.00 dollars down the drain . first cell phone to do this in 30 years since the first brick fucing pissed as this phone is new . any way to r00t it and disable this ?

Moisture detected / auto power on override?

So I am at the beach for the week and started getting the moisture detected nag at night. I cant find any way so far to over ride this. Yesterday I was able to charge the phone by plugging the charger in and turning the phone off. I wake up this morning and have gotten the error again. Now I am down to 10% and the phone keeps turning itself back on everytime I turn it off while charging. I have tried leaving it plugged in and plugging it in while off. I have turned dev options on and off along with changing it to MTP mode and using the PC. I have tried a normal charger and a dumb charger.
So someone at LG seems to think they know better than I do. How do I turn this feature off? I know there has got to be a way to make your phone stay off? What if the thing dies now, the hotel catches on fire, and we all burn alive because my phone is dead and cant cant call for help? (actually I dont know that the phone would help to much then kind of like the kids that tried to text 911 during the Va Tech school shooting instead of fighting back or running away) There should be an extremely high liability in not allowing someone to charge their phone.
No I have not taken the phone in the water. Besides it is supposed to be ip68. I was going to try and pick up the buy one get one V30 deal. At this point after the gps fiasco with my old G5 and now this I want no parts of another LG. I dont even want a smart phone but a dumb phone. In fact I want a retarded phone that all you have to do is hit 10 numbers to make a simple phone call.

Hello , yesterday i had my first "fake positive" moisture detection. In my case i used pendrive made of metal which was cold to touch. When i warmed it to room temperature it worked just fine. Maybe your cable connector is too cold?

Thanks. I have tried multiples. Yes it is probably a little more humid here but it shouldnt be enough to trigger the sensor. Afterall last summer I rolled with the thing in my pocket and was sweating all over it. Also, the night I got it I spent one of the nights in one of the courts in richmond looking for someone at a running pace and in ripstop 50/50 nylon without throwing the error. I am thinking my phone might be not quite right. I wish there was an override.
So I found out what it does when it dies finally. It charges to 5% then cuts back on and dies again. I am all about technology but only when it works.
-update.
Went out to swim and before I left I took the rubber case off and jammed the whole phone into one of the vents on the PTAC and cranked it up to 11. I got back and now at least it is showing it is charging and not cutting back on while doing so. Once I get it to 100% we will repeat the process. It is very moist here but I dont see having everyone with a LG or Samsung phone not being able to use them. Yes I am staying in a resort in a first world country not in a shack in off the coast of Lebanon or something.
Try this. exact same thing happened to me.
My LG G6 all of a sudden stopped charging, it said moisture detected and USB port, charging blocked. And then my phone died. I asked my phone provider what to do, they said to call LG. LG said it's because I haven't updated the phone, but my phone was dead. So if your phone has enough battery power to do an update, do it right away. What I did was took it to the store where I bought my phone, charged it wirelessly enough so I can do an update. And that's it , my phone worked fine after. Hope this works for you

Replace 930 with your G6 model number. Mine was 873 and I turned it off. I'll have to test it later to see if I still get the message. Alternatively, what other thing worked for me was switching around the usb type c end that goes in the phone to the smooth side facing up. The connected side always sets off the message
There appears to be a continuity sensor at the rear of the port. If you look to the left and right of the wafer connector in the back of the jack, you'll see two little contacts. My guess is that these create a circuit when damp or covered with any type of slightly conductive dust to trigger a cutoff on the charge port. I had this issue starting at 2am last night (hadn't been outside since 7pm that evening, phone in pocket) throughout today. I tried just cleaning out the port with a microfiber cloth, that didn't seem to do it. So ultimately I ended up shutting the phone off, getting a cotton swab damp with 90% isopropyl alcohol, swabbing the connector until the entire thing was damp, and blowing it out with air duster. Then I used a flat toothpick to clean off any remaining debris and dust inside the ports. No error since, been about 30 minutes. May not solve for you, but this isn't necessarily just water related, definitely seems to be triggered by dust and debris covering the contacts at the rear of the jack.
Edit at 2230 EST: Going on 6 hours now with no further issues.

How did you get it inside, I'm thinking I did a poor job cleaning the port but a needle barely fits.
Here's my post:
"The message appeared randomly while charging one night. It was nowhere near water for several months and I work in an office.
What I've tried:
- Drying with a hairdryer (not even a temporary fix)
- Force stopping LG system and LG server processes. I even disabled them with package disabler!
- Disabled the moisture sensor in secret menu. Warning still shows up! Even if I try to turn of the phone and charge it.
- Cleaned the USB C socket with a hairpin and cloth
- Cleaned under running water, swapped with alcohol and dried again (getting desperate)
It does however charge if I plug unplug it in like 5 times. Really annoying!
It does this regardless of charging cable, I tried with 5 cables at home and work.
I read somewhere that the pins were causing a short, but the pins are inside the cable right?
What else can I try?"

Funny, I just tried this and still get the error. You'd think disabling it would remove the damn notification/it from working....
After all the **** I did, I found my problem and solution.
It was because of my charging cable that had bent pins, yet oddly enough the moisture detected error persisted with other cables.
Thru away that cable, then reset the phone cache and soft reboot (volume down + power)

Used trimmed down tooth pick and nail vanish remover - gently cleaned and my wife hair dryer on low ...and Voila" back in business ! Thanks for basic idea !

Replace 930 with your G6 model number. Mine was 873 and I turned it off. I'll have to test it later to see if I still get the message. Alternatively, what other thing worked for me was switching around the usb type c end that goes in the phone to the smooth side facing up. The connected side always sets off the message

This Doesn't work on Sprint/Boost Phones. I have tried all the 'hidden menu' codes I can find but none lead to the SVC menu..
