Hi all,
I do hope I am asking it in the right place (I didn't want to make a new thread at first, but the closest one I found was locked, so...).
I am willing to buy a Xiaomi MI2S phone. I already know it is only be sold in China (that isn't a problem, actually). I am mostly interested in the 32Gb version, it has really awesome specs.
I have been making a lot of research about this phone and, from what I've seen so far, feedback is positive. That is comforting, to me, but on the same page, I am directly addressing towards people who actually own this phone (or at least have tried it), what are its fails ? Is that phone as perfect as it looks ? Are there some serious flaws/inconveniences with it ?
Second, I also know that the device comes with a specific ROm (MIUI, available in both English and Chinese). I am totally fine with that, as I had a previous positive experience with MIUI roms. But I'd also like to know if, actually, it is possible to customize the phone ? I mean bootloader unlock, root ? Are there some custom roms (well I do mean Cyanogen support, or Cyanogen ports) for Xiaomi MI2S ? These aspects remains a bit unclear, and any piece of information would be much appreciated.
Thanks reading.
i'm willing to buy this phone too. When my good old LG O2x wil die (Can happen every minute ) So i also did some research.
In my langauge (Dutch) There is a lot of information about it. there is a topic on tweakers.net with lots of users who own the device. They are all very happy with it. Here you go... Ok, it's dutch.. But with the use of a translator.. I guess you can get some interesting things out of it. If not.. I could translate some pieces of text for you to english. Just PM me. Not the whole forum of course
About the ROM's. For as far as i know.. There are still no roms without MIUI.. But i'm not suprised if there are roms without MIUI. Maybe in china..
That's all i can help you with atm..
Good luck with researching
miui was modify from cm
and no other rom for mi2s now.
Hello,
I know is my first post here, but i own a MI2 (almost same specs as MI2S, last one using krait processor, better camera) since december this year.
So far nothing to complain about:
- with MIUI V5 battery last 2 full days (wi-fi on, push e-mail on, gps on)
- gps accurate about 2-3 meters
- no problem with gsm/3G signal
- display is very sharp, resistant to scratches, maybe some kind of ACG glass (drop it few times on the concrete, last time i forgot it on the top of my car and i go only plastic frame around display deform)
- sometimes it`s shut off by himself (dunno why, maybe i mess around with secondary recovery partition when it was on MIUI V4)
- no laggy at all (over 72 apps instaled)
- overall a good phone, and i like it
- i use it with the native rom and i get via OTA some updates at 2-3 weeks
sorry for my bad english, hope that helps

According to the people i refered to in my previous post..www.ibuygou.com is the best shop for the Xiaomi Mi2S device, when it comes to shipping. Some people in holland say that it takes only 1 day to ship, others complain that it takes more than 3 weeks. It depends on the amount of devices they have in stock.
The prices are great btw, 300 euro / 400 dollar for the 16gb, 350 euro / 450 dollar for the 32gb variant. And max 20 dollars for import
They also have accesoires like back covers, cases, batteries etc.
How fast is the GPS locking on the Mi2S?
This is really the perfect phone, with the exception it doesnt have LTE (does it?)
I had a mi 2
Its the best smartphone in 4.3" formfactor
Fast, stable
Very good camera
Long lasting akku on (gps wlan, edge)
Out of the box fast and stable no need for custom rom
Beside miui there is a stockandroid rom with english and chinese language
Cons
3g akku drain
Thick and high weight in comparison to s3, htc one
Bad support in fact of defect or something
Sometimes bad reception
Sometimes microphone issues ( mayve only my device)

Hi all,
First of all, thanks for the positive feedback.
Well, Ibuygou seems to be a popular (and good) choice as a way to purchase the phone.
I'll consider that. Thanks for the tip.
Well, I still don't have much information about the second part of the question though. I am looking for information in the actual state-of-art on modding the phone : is there some safe ways for bootloader unlock, phone rooting ? Are there custom roms actually for Xiaomi devices, or at least, devs working on that ?
These aspects still remain a bit unclear to me, and i'd like to be enlighten on this.
Thanks in advance.
PS: Well it seems i missed natoleon's answer on that:
miui was modify from cm

There is no developers support due to lack of source code for the kernel as they refuse to follow the GPL laws. Also. Ok real development team has any respect for the MIUI crew as it is well known they take code from others and don't give anything back. For the these reasons this device will not see any development or forums here.
Wayne Tech Nexus
You can find a AOSP for Xiaomi Mi2/Mi2S here. It uses the same kernel though.

It's a spanish forum, but the rom is multilanguage. You can use Google Translator to get an idea of it's said.

I have ordered this Friday Mi2S 16GB because of "crazy discount" on ibuygou: http://www.ibuygou.com/crazy-discount/
I am really looking forward for this phone, I love MIUI
Hi, thanks for your prompt reply....
i heard a rumor that Mi3 is getting launched by august 16th... is that true ? also with full HD & octa core CPU ?
above all it is priced at 320$ !!!
I am very excited & i am kind of lets wait no matter even if the earthquake happens.... what should i do man ???
Hi,
I it's up to you.
The question is, do you want BIG and heavy phone (MI3, 5" screen, fullHD) or relatively small but still veeery fast (Mi2S, 4,3" screen, 720p).
Both phones are so fast that rest of parameters doesn't matter, you don't feel the difference....
I am very happy that MI2S have only 4,3" screen, not 4,5" or bigger because I want "compact" but fast phone with 2GB ram.
So I don't care about MI3.

Since I don't think I can re-phrase myself in a better way, I'll just quote myself from a different topic:

The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced that the problem is the ROM devs themselves - seems like most rush ahead and as soon as a new Android version pops out - scrap bug-fixing what they made so you can have a fully stable version and move straight to a new one, bringing all the old bugs along with a ton of new ones.
I have to be honest, after some replies and PMs I decided to use dual-boot and try some other stuff...and I'm convinced the ROMs that can be classified as "stable" are less than 5...total. All others seem to have some type of issue that can screw over a person's daily life in one way or another.
Am I the only one that feels this way?

I would really like to see what you guys think on the subject: should developers slow down [maybe skip a version] to provide a genuinely stable ROM, or leap ahead for the new version and patch it out to a "usable" degree?
Most ROM developers are pretty much unpaid volunteers.
They should do whatever they want.
If you do the ROM, you get to choose.
It all shakes out one way or another.
^^^^^
Exactly. What a presumptuous thread. Also, why do you even need a 2nd thread to pose this question given your ongoing thread about not dissimilar issues ?

I already know that...but here's the thing - noone makes a ROM him himself/herself only. Most people make a ROM and share it for others to use, so while the final decision is ALWAYS up to the individual dev, it's still good to know what the community prefers (or at least it would've mattered to me if I was a dev).
If we go with the logic that community opinion doesn't matter at all, we might aswell get rid of all topics that are not bug reporting or guides.

Because it has little to do with the other thread?
"Share your first experience with custom ROMs" - "Do you think custom ROMs are being made and moved on from too fast?"...see the difference?
AFTER A BIG BANG a STABLE EARTH WAS FORMED.. If u want a pure stable ROM u have to progress. So its better we leave the DEVs work on it. Moreover its free be happy... We are not supposed to judge them what they focus on...

OK, sure.
But I don't like the statement that "the problem is the ROM devs". It's criticism, and I think criticism is better directed at parties that are doing it for commercial purposes where I/we are paying customers, such as Google or the phone OEMs, or even CM Inc and MIUI Inc.
For popular phones there are a variety of ROMs. Some are more stable (often stock based) and many are more bleeding edge.
Even Google is more bleeding edge with AOSP on Nexus devices. How many times have we heard of longstanding AOSP Nexus bugs, such as BT issues ?
People slam the phone OEMs and carriers for taking so long to provide updates. Yet those bleeding edge updates, even from Google are often very buggy.
I'm happy to have a variety of choices. Let the chips fall where they may. Unless I've contributed financially to a ROM dev, I'm not generally going to ask him/her to follow any wishes I have about stability or leading edge features. (I've made a few exceptions where a popular ROM has nasty bugs that impact the users of my commercial apps.)
I have 20 phones to do testing and development of my apps. I go into these XDA forums and look for the most popular ROMs. Sometimes I want the latest to do KitKat testing, sometimes I want the most popular, and sometimes I want something stable (often stock based, as it turns out, or based on CM10.2 for example.)
i think first they should progress a bit then make that much part stable and move son

I think people are misinterpreting my words...I'm not saying devs are terrible, bad at their work or anything like that, I'm sharing a thought on why I think most ROMs are not stable enough for everyday use and made a poll to see if others think this too, or simply put "a topic where people can show preference", I never once said "you should listen to me" or "do it how I say because it's better". While I personally don't have any use for custom ROMs in my daily life, I'm always happy to see more and more people making ROMs, stable or not.
However, I will say one thing and back it up forever - "it's not commercial" is not a valid reason not to criticize something. Any forum or work (coding, art etc.) is fully subject to criticism. So to people telling me "you cant criticize developers because they do it for free" - yes I can (not to mention it's my real life job)...it's called "having a point of view", if you agree or don't agree - that's up to you.
In short - this is a topic to see points of view on this, NOT to force anyone into changing his/her way of work. So stop treating it like one. It's how forums work - you open a topic to discus something.
P.S. yeah, now after re-reading it, I might've picked wrong words when I said "the problem are the devs"..."problem" in particular doesn't seem like an appropriate word for it...I apologize if I offended any dev with it.
Devs should continue to do whatever the hell they want to do however the hell they want to do it & ignore people like you.
Opinions & arseholes.
In my opinion, in order for rom makers to gain loyal users, they should prioritize stability while making progresses.

I'm using the Samsung stock ROM (Spain region) since my job requires me to do so, but I really like MIUI for its awesome stability and customization (though I have a feeling they'll never update the S2 to 4.2 or higher)...but I also like CyanogenMod 10.1 (the stable build) for the slight performance increase (and I would've probably kept it if it wasn't for the unfixable MHL and other Samsung closed source things that don't work).
I'm also keeping an eye on Omni and I plan to give it another try once it reaches a more stable stage since it fixes some graphics issues on the S2 GT-i9100.

Hey folks!
So I decided to create an overview thread on current custom and stock ROMs for our beloved Mate 8 in order to give users like me a better decision basis on what to flash / try out next
Your input is appreciated! Tell the community about your experiences with any ROMs uve tried thus far, be it custom or stock! Especially facts about battery life, performance, overall system fluidity, bugs and functionality are important here. Also dont forget to include your hardware and software base in each case
For an easier overview I´ve also created a poll including current custom ROMs as well as the latest stock firmware iterations as of April 16th, 2016.
Enjoy!
The question in itself is wrong
care to elaborate?

For knowing wich is best, we need to try them all. And no one try them all. So we probably juste vote what rom we have right now on our phone.
Fonctionnality, its you to decide what is usefull or not for you.
It also depends on features. Some people like more things in the KangVIP based roms and some like something stock. Some people feel like the International roms are better or faster and some feel like the Chinese ones are. You need to try them all for yourselves and see which one you like best. I put a lot of time into my roms as does Ephemera and everyone else. We want there to be a choice instead of just one custom rom or none. Plus you can find out this info by visiting the respective thread for each rom and reading through the posts.
Thank you for creating this poll. I will be receiving my L29 mate 8 in the mail soon and I would love to know which of these roms support Esperanto as a system wide language, basically my phone is all in Esperanto as my Linux computer is. This phone looks amazing and i cant wait to get it

of course theres always going to be different opinions and different focus on different features also, i never said that voting for a specific rom automatically makes all other roms bad! thats why this thread is for, so users can elaborate on their experience and tell the community what they prefer.

same here, neither i nor anyone else expected every user to have tried every single rom before giving his or her opinion here. if it were such a perfect world then the size of xda would shrink to 1% of its current size due to users being well informed and actually using the search function properly before posting or opening up new threads
again, this is just meant to be an opportunity to discuss and compare different roms, nothing more, nothing less and it goes without saying that any dev's contribution is appreciated here, the more the merrier!
cheers

I think I tried them all, I am on al10 and I am currently on L29 stock C185B180. In my opinion it's the best ROM thus far, it's not the best in term of battery life (still decent) but everything is working flawlessly. Themes apply correctly, and I no longer have issues with notifications. Thanks for the poll!
Hmm. "Ephemenal" Mate 8 sounds pretty nice . @ajsmsg78 is completely right here, there is no perfect ROM since every person prefers something over the other. In our mate 8's case these ROMs are here to give a choice since they are all stock based but have different modifications. Everyone enjoys their cup of coffee a certain way but its still the same coffee, one cup is filled with sugar, one with creamer, one with both, and the last with nothing; you drink the cup of Joe you enjoy best.

I wanted to get this device too and searched a lots about it... No custom rom...so that made me to choose the Honor 8
Anybody ?
That phone is still young, and it's not a Google phone nor a very famous phone as are Samsung phones. So it will take time to get CM on it, as it took time to get CM on Zenfone 2 (and the Zenfone 2 is Intel based, not Qualcom, wich was a big issue !).
Asus is really not capable to make a good Android based system, and it's quiet annoying to use it. But be patient, I'm pretty sure CM and others will come as soon as possible

This appears to be the main hub for info in this topic, and I am interested as well, so if anyone finds a good ROM for this phone, please post about it here
this was today conversation ,,,the results of what you read is just a sorry and have a nice weekend
We are sorry that you seem to be unsatisfied with the speed of us rolling out updates. The reason for that is, that we want to make sure that our update is flawless. Releasing updates too quickly always carries the risk that the update itself makes problems. Please give us time to do our update properly before deciding to avoid ELEPHONE in the future. We are sure the waiting will be worth it.
Have a nice weekend

since you are the service time ,i must say that i have a bug with the keyboards ,on letter p and l sometimes when i press them its closes the keyboard

Dear ......, have you tried with other keyboards? I can recommend to you the SwiftKey or the Gboard keyboard. Those are great keyboards.

seriously you are the servise of the elephone and you dont know that the gboard is the default ?tried the swift and the apachi keyboard ,all the same on p and l ,,,and telling cuistomer to try another keyboard is not a solution sorry ,,,
why dont you provide the source ,so some developers like xda can make a custom rom ,tha is fully fuctional ?
-Elephone Service
Dear
Yes, we are the service of ELEPHONE. We are sorry you still face the problem with the keyboard. Of course we want to help you out as fast as possible. Therefore we recommended those keyboards to rule out other reasons that might cause the problem beforehand. If you're still facing issues, please perform a factory reset on your phone. Please backup all your data first so you don't loose anything. Factory reset is a safe procedure when you have everything backed up, including the 2FA applications you might have stored on your phone, photos, contacts and everything else. If you need any further assistence, please contact [email protected]. Please understand, that we cannot give assistance on how to install custom ROMs, as they are third party software. They can brick your phone and we don't bear responsibility for that.
Again, we are sorry we couldn't resolve your problem

hahah what ever ,,,i said just provide the source , so the cm make a custom rom for this rom ,if i brick it ,you should be the last one to blame ,i had over 50 phones in the past ,and all had custom roms ,and they were working perfect ,i just can understand why is so big deal to provide the source ,so a cyanomod gcould be build ,instead of leaving so many customers with a faulty rom ,and with no update ,,,there are a lot of custom rom builder that they can fix the issues in one week ,,just give the source ,,thats nice to get 230 euros from a customer and say to him that we are sorry that we cant solve the issue you have with one of our devices ?but thank you for the 230 euros ,,hahahha,
and its not only me facing problems
a lot of customers of s8
and its all software build problems
Just want to know about Elephone S8 4G
Are you using this? if yes then could suggest that one for me? as I want to try out a different smartphone, not so notable one but equally good.
im the one in a milion mate ,for me doesnt worth to pay the 2k screen ,and not have others, but you should ask others to
@nasios In my opinion you're quite rude to whoever was helping you. It's not their job, and is definitely not a guarantee, that they (or any other device manufacturer) will provide their sources. As far as the updates go, their answer sounded pretty darn reasonable. Why get an update ASAP fixing a few bugs, but in the long run giving you even more new ones, instead of waiting for a stable update that actually fixes the issues..? Personally I wouldn't suggest anyone base their choice off of your comment(s).
*I was told this phone will not receive Android 8.0 Oreo, but within the next week it will receive an update fixing known bugs.

I'd be more prompt to take you seriously if you reported actual issues and day to day use performance rather than petty complaints over lack of support over something almost no company would support (custom roms).. Not here for a fight, no need to get upset over my response. But rather, give some explanation and user experience for me. Maybe mine will be better, maybe not. I know what I paid for is all, I'm not expecting it to work with my carrier, I'm aware of the bugged camera, and I'm aware of their lack of support. Anything you'd like to add to it that's legitimate given the price? Thanks

i sold ele ,bought something else ,no bugs ,(cause if you google it ,a lot of people have bugs with s8 )everything is better ,even the camera ,no keyboards issues with the same programs)the only one is i dont have the screen of elephone which i dont care ..
i guess me and many other users that report bugs and expect from tha company that gave 220 to get it ,are same as me ,,
and i paid less fot the other one ...and im happy ,and i dont care rather if a custom rom will come out ...
my user experience advice since you have prompt the other not to follow is sell the elephone and never again buy elephone ,,,

Thank you for going into a bit of detail about the issues you had. I'll keep those specifically in mind as I use mine, if they're present and unbearable I'll refund it, otherwise I'll keep it. I'm more after the screen and specs, the build looks lovely and I feel there's a lot of work arounds to many issues. Again, thanks.
