Hi,
my Nexus 4 is stuck in a boot loop since 2 days. I found it turned off and assumed it crashed (has done that once or twice before), but after turning it on it's gets stuck on the boot up screen. I've tried restarting it numerous times, left it on the boot screen for hours - nothing.
I can access the recovery mode and according to most things I've found while searching the internet for a solution a "wipe data/factory reset" would hopefully do the trick, but the thing is... I haven't backed up my device in ages. (Stupid, I know.) I'm travelling and took a lot of pictures that I would hate to loose.
Is there any way to save them? I don't care for app data or anything else.
I wouldn't mind rooting it (was thinking about doing that anyway), but I'm pretty much a n00b when it comes to Android, haven't done more with it than simply using it.
I have read up quite a bit about rooting in the last two days (here on the forum and everywhere else) but I'm still not sure how exactly to do it, since all methods seem to require unlocking the bootloader and therefore deleting my photos (or just don't give much in the way of explanation).
I'm using a mac, but if necessary I also have Windows installed. I have installed Adb and fastboot following this guide.
The phone is not rooted, I don't have developer options or USB debugging enabled and it's running on 4.4.4.
I would be really grateful for help.
If you can boot into the bootloader you can install a custom recovery, I'd recommend twrp. Then booting into the custom recovery you could use adb to pull files off your device . But your bootloader needs to be unlocked. If it isn't I'm afraid you won't be able to get your photos

bootloop issue
A.
Try to go into safe mode and backup your data.
Boot into Safe Mode:
1. Press/Hold Power button until power menu shows up
2. Tap/Hold Power off option
3. Choose OK to reboot in safe mode
B.
For bootloop problem:
Boot into Stock Recovery
1. Power+VolUp while booting to enter recovery
2. You can release buttons after you see Google on screen
(Note: Must be this sequence Press/Hold Power, THEN Press/Release VolUp, release Power)
3. Android fallen down screen - VolUp to toggle recovery menu
Now wipe Cache & Dalvik Cache in recovery and reboot the phone.
C.
If the (Option B) does not solved then try to flash the stock rom with the below given mentioned steps.
First download any stock rom and also the related usb drivers. Install the drivers into the PC.
Boot into the bootloader.
Open (fastboot.exe) Cmd prompt as admin. Put the stock rom into that particular folder.
fastboot flash bootloader filename.img
reboot the phone and return back to the bootloader.
Then, we will flash all other partitions.
fastboot flash radio filename.img
Again reboot the phone and go back into the bootloader
fastboot flash boot filename.
fastboot flash recovery filename.img
fastboot flash userdata filename.img
fastboot flash system filename.img
If you want to relock the bootloader of your device after flashing the device, put the device back in fastboot mode. Then type in the following command in the Terminal or Command Window you had opened earlier -:
fastboot oem lock
This will re-lock the bootloader of your Nexus device, restoring your warranty and putting the device back to complete stock.
I hope this helps you out.
Thank you, but is there a way to boot into safe mode if the phone isn't turned on? I can not get to the power menu since I can't turn the phone on...
I can only access the recovery menu.
Data backup
Alternate method you can do is that you have to download a software by name 'DROID EXPLORER' - (try to google it) you will find this software from the internet. Then install the software on your PC or Laptop. Once you open the software it will take some time to download the sdk files from the internet then install the windows sdk files also.
Later you go into the recovery mode with the usb cable connected to your PC. Then open the Droid Explorer software you will see your phone connected picture. Now double click and open it go to sdcard and copy all your pictures and other files to your system.
Finally, Once you backed up all your files now you can reflash with the proper rom from the recovery mode. From directly inserting the rom.zip file into the sdcard and run the custom rom after you wipe the partitions properly in recovery.
Note: Before wiping the partitions always unmount the system, data, cache and then wipe it.
I am using moto x style and unlocked bootloader with 'Windroid Universal Android Toolkit' v2.5 but cannot flash TWRP and root this apl. Today I tried flash TWRP and then root but after showing 'Congratulation' pop up,my phone stucked on 'No command' page. I tried twice and same result. Later i check there is either no TWRP or root by SuperSU. And i see youtube video and and read many XDA forum and comments and most of the users says the phone stuck on M logo page when reboot after the root process. And all says its a issue with Marshmallow. And most of the xda posts and youtube video are made during 5.1.1 so there is no problem in that video during flash TWRP and root. So i need a seamless process to flash TWRP and root on Marshmallow so that it doesnot stuck on M logo. And I dont want to downgrade to L for root. And unluckily if it stuck M logo thwn what to do to go back to home screen?Thank you.

It's in my signature... There are multiple links to what your looking for and other threads, if you are on computer they should be immediately below the message, if you're in the XDA app you have to look in the user profile (don't think it's possible in Tapatalk though).

My build no is 24.49-18-4. So is this process suitable for this build no? And still i dont flash TWRP. I tried with "Windroid Universal Android Toolkit app" to flash TWRP. though it showed a 'Successful' pop up but it didn't. Can I go with any old process to flash TWRP or u have a new process?

Step 1 - Stop using toolkits! They rarely work right on modern Android devices. With the Moto the only safe, reliable way to root is manually.
I don't know what the 'old way' is to flash TWRP your referring to here... I recommend one time booting twrp with "fastboot boot twrp.img" command (replace twrp.img with your actual twrp image file) then perform a backup to the SD card or USB OTG device and put it away for safe keeping. Then flash twrp either with twrp you have booted, or manually with "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img"
The rooting method I linked before is valid for all Marshmallow builds, if you have Lollipop or Nougat you need to find a different method.

On your device, go into Settings -> About and find the Build Number and tap on it 7 times to enable developer settings. Press back and go into Developer Options and enable USB debugging. From your computer, open a command prompt and type:
adb reboot bootloader
You should now be in fastboot mode.
Download the correct image file and copy the file into the same folder as your adb and fastboot binaries. Rename the image to twrp.img and type:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot reboot
Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install.
I am saying about this official method which is on twrp.me site. And after typing 'fastboot reboot' what I have to do to go home page? Sorry to ask u so many things. Actually I am totally new in this thing and very much worry after facing issues 2-3 times. And thank u very much for fast reply.
One more ques, I have unlocked bootloader with that "Windroid Universal Android Toolkit". Now in fastboot it shows 'bootloader unlocked, code 3' is that ok? As u say toolkit doesnot work on modern devices.

So Moto is a tad different... After you flash recovery, do not reboot with fastboot, instead use the Vol Dn key select Recovery and press Power to start it. When the splash screen comes up, allow changes to system, then I the TWRP main menu select Reboot - Recovery, the device will start TWRP again and it should be "locked" in. From there perform the rooting.

That mean after typing fastboot flash recovery twrp.img press enter and then i can plug off the usb keeping my device on fastboot then changes to recovery and do the rest?
Btw suppose if i dont want to root it at that time, then what i do? I mean just after flash recovery how to go to home screen without rooting?
And when i want to perform root process later, after installing SuperSU zip if I press power button and vol down then may I go to twrp recovery or ph stock recovery?

I will definately do so. I also want to use CM14.1 but i want to do so step by step. Actually after facing issues 2-3 times i am little bit worry now. That is true. So hesitate to perform both at a single time.

You don't need to root if your going CM, flash TWRP, backup, and flash CM. You don't need to over complicate it.
If you boot (not flash) TWRP and backup then get a copy to safe place there is little risk of anything going wrong.

Ok. But is there any regular chance of going wrong during flash TWRP or flash CM? I backed up all internal important data to external sd card and when I perform these process I just remove that sd from phone.
You pls tell me how to go to home screen after flashing TWRP?
And if I need to root it later then also what to do then? I mean if then I press power and vol minus then will I get TWRP recovery to root it or it will be redirectred to phone custom recovery?

There is always a chance of something going wrong, no one can guarantee everything will be fine. We have had people do everything perfectly but something happens and it's bricked... It's rare but does happen.
After you flash TWRP in the bootloader, press Vol Dn until it says Recovery and press power to start it, after several seconds you will get a screen that will ask if it can write to system, select yes, the next screen will be the TWRP home screen.
Once you flash TWRP, your stock recovery is gone, but you access it the same way... Power off, press and hold PWR+Vol Dn and in the bootloader menu select Recovery and press power.

Your last two are redundant, either flash or boot, you don't have to do both, but each has a purpose... Flash is permanent, boot is transient and will disappear on a reboot.
Boot TWRP first, the first time it will not take you to the main page initially but show you a notification page asking if you want allow it to make changes to the system or keep it read-only, this time only do not allow changes... Then the main screen of TWRP will be displayed and you should do a full backup of all partitions to the SD card.
Flash will just write the recovery partition, it doesn't start anything, you select recovery from the fastboot menu to start it.

So after "fastboot boot twrp.img" i have to allow to make changes and have to do a nandroid backup. After that will I get option to "Reboot?"
And later when I went to recovery I will get twrp page instead of stock recovery? 1st I think I should flash cm13 then root then upgrade to 14.1 bcz still a feel little worry to root it on stock rom.

No, almost every part of what your saying is wrong...
Boot twrp and do not allow changes first time and backup. This will give a clean backup to restore from if things go badly.
After this is complete, in TWRP go to Reboot menu and select Bootloader, flash TWRP, do not reboot but use the bootloader menu to start TWRP. This time allow it to make changes to system. At the main menu if twrp go to Reboot - Recovery the device will restart and TWRP will load automatically, this step will lock in twrp so the stock OS doesn't replace it.
You only need to root stock rom, you don't need to root CM roms as they are already rooted (there are a few roms that are not pre-rooted but they are rare and none of the ones your talking about). As far as CM 13 vs 14.1 I can't really help you but from I've read both are stable enough for a daily driver device.

Did fastboot gave some error message, also did you only test to go to recovery straight from fastboot, because that is other recovery which can't be changed.

1. Booloader unlocking only affects to what you can flash in fastboot, it doesn't affect stock recovery funtionality.
I asked about factory reset option, because I wanted to make sure you aren't booting to "recovery2/eRecovery". (It doesn't have factory reset option)
2. Avoid using kingoroot and other oneclick root apps if it is possible.
3. Your firmware version doesn't matter.
4. Bootloader unlocking can't cause crash. Locked bootloader could cause crash if system is modified(I think), but you would still be able to get recovery.
One way to make sure you boot to normal recovery is to connect your phone to pc --> open command line --> type "adb reboot recovery". This won't take you to erecovery
I can't do any better help with the current information.
After you successfully flash the recovery with fastboot (always use the latest!) You need to do these things in order (and fast) in order to but to TWRP. If you don't it will boot to stock recovery and you have to fastboot flash again.
You must
a) write fastboot reboot in the console but don't pass Enter!!
b) hold VOLUME UP
c) (still holding VOL UP) presss Enter and remove the USB cable immediately once it says your device is booting now.
Keep holding VOL UP until you boot to TWRP. Allow modifications.
For root you will flash Magisk (you know, normal zip), which a) is open source, so no sneaky stuff and b) can hide root from apps as a bonus. You can always get the zip here: http://tiny.cc/latestmagisk
Important: If you have other root solutions install them for example SuperSU has an uninstall option. Then flash Magisk

The recovery you go from fastboot is eRecovery. You can't boot to stock or TWRP recovery directly from fastboot. If you choose shutdown from eRecovery then you can just go to TWRP with normal way (power + VOL UP). Going to eRecovery doesn't undo TWRP installation. (This also means you can do force update even with TWRP installed, I think, not 100% sure)

I just wanted to point out that you don't need to re-flash if you happen to only press vol up in fastboot.
I recently got a huawei Nexus 6p. I had it with TWRP and rooted. The battery in these as you know the batteries are not the best. I had been told to try a hard factory reset. I then was able to wipe using TWRP and then lost the recovery. I was able to flash a stock version of the android 8.1.0, however, Now when I try to boot in recovery mode I get nothing but an android guy and say's something like no command found. I haven't been able to root it again or flash TWRP. My goal is to root and flash nethunter. Is there any way of fixing the recovery or flashing a new one.
Once you are on the screen with the little green guy laying down, hold the power button and tap volume up. That should take you into recovery.
Boot into Download mode, (voldown + power) then flash normally with fastboot.
https://dl.twrp.me/angler/twrp-3.2.3-0-angler.img.html
Download image to desktop, open command prompt, and type "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-angler.img" without quotations. You need device drivers and android sdk tools. Bootloader needs to be unlocked as well.
I've seen alot of guys here who are encountering problems while flashing custom roms.Make sure you have backed up all your data before starting the procedure.
This method is also valid for those who are coming straight from the Stock rom.
Prerequisites :
•Unlocked Bootloader
•ADB and Fastboot Files
•Desired Custom Rom
•Copypartitions file
•TWRP image
•TWRP installer - Download and move it to Internal Storage
•A USB C-Type Cable and some Brain.
•Magisk [Optional]
•Fresh Gapps ARM64 (I'd recommend Mini)
Installation :
#1. Back up all your data or simply move everything to your PC.
#2.Boot your phone into Bootloader Mode [Power button + Volume Down] or Enable Debugging mode,And run this Command ''adb devices''- To ensure that the device is connected, then ''adb reboot bootloader''.
#3.Move the ''twrp.img'' file to the ''adb" folder of your PC.
#4.You'll see 3-4 files along with twrp.img file you just copied there[adb folder], Simply Click Shift+Right Click anywhere in that blank space, then click on Open Powershell Window here or Open Command Prompt Window.
#5.Attach your phone to the PC,you'll hear a sound, yet run this Command "fastboot devices" to ensure that the device is connected properly [Device ID will appear]
#6.Now you're supposed to temporarily boot TWRP in order to permanently flash the Custom Recovery. So to do this ,Run this Command while the device is connected to the PC in fastboot mode > "fastboot boot twrp.img '' [After Typing fastboot boot, simply drag twrp.img file into the PowerShell or Command prompt window to Complete the Command ''fastboot boot twrp.img'',it may look like ''fastboot boot C://adb/twrp.img''.
#7.After Booting Temporarily into TWRP,Swipe for Modifications,Locate and install TWRPinstaller.zip, this will permanently install TWRP as your Recovery.
#8.After installing TWRP,Return to the home screen of TWRP and Reboot into Recovery from there.[Permanently Flashing incase you don't need hassles with computer flashing]
#9.After booting again into TWRP,Click on Wipe>Format User Data>Type Yes>Go to Home screen Reboot into Recovery.
#10.After booting again into TWRP,Click on Wipe>Advanced Wipe> [Tick on Dalvik/Art Cache,Cache, System,Data] > Wipe it off.
#11.Go back to the Home Screen of the TWRP,Reboot into Recovery.
#12.Now Push copypartitions.zip file to your phone from your PC,then flash it via TWRP,then again,Reboot your phone to Recovery.
#13.Now Push the Desired Custom rom you would want to install on your G7 river from the PC> Install it> After the Installation Finishes,Reboot your phone to the Bootloader mode from TWRP [As the the Recovery will be replaced by the Custom Rom's Recovery, hence, TWRP will be removed].

Errors and Fixes:
#1.If you encounter any problem while flashing zips from the internal storage, simply move all the zips to the MicroSD or USB OTG and flash it from there.
#2.If your TWRP isn't reading the internal storage properly or isn't responding well, simply reboot your phone again to the Bootloader mode, again boot twrp.img and try again, this should do the thing.

Simplify and Clarify
Thanks @deathcruizer for the your procedure. It rescued me in a jam. The critical items for me that you noted were that the Custom ROM replaced TWRP with its own Recovery and that a Factory Reset was required.
I wanted to simplify and clarify your key points for those already setup with fastboot and familiar with TWRP. Generic filenames mentioned should be replaced by the actual full name; eg, twrp-3.3.1-2-river.img.
1. Backup partitions in TWRP just in case for a restore. And Data will be needed later.
2. Move all zip files needed (ROM, Gapps, copy-partitions, twrp-installer, Magisk, etc.) to internal storage or USB OTG. Move twrp.img on PC to a convenient location for fastboot.
3. Enter fastboot boot twrp.img to temporarily use TWRP.
4. Flash copy-partitions.zip, reboot, and flash custom ROM.zip.
5. In TWRP, choose Reboot to the Bootloader mode, not Recovery. TWRP has been removed and replaced by the custom ROM's Recovery.
6. Enter fastboot boot twrp.img to temporarily use TWRP again. Install Gapps.zip, wipe caches, and then Power Off.
7. Manually Power On to the Custom ROM. Accept its Factory Data Reset option.
8. Boot into Bootloader Mode, enter fastboot boot twrp.img again, and use this temporary TWRP to install TWRP permanently using twrp-installer.zip.
9. Reboot and begin a minimum setup of the Custom ROM.
10. Reboot to TWRP and restore the Data partition.
11. G7 River is back with its apps, desktop layout, settings, icons, etc., on the new Custom ROM.
Hey guys, your tutorial is great and very informative. I do however have a recurring problem with installing any custom rom. No matter which one I choose, I have no LTE and occasionally the phone randomly reboot if I unplug my phone. Has anyone encountered this? I've followed all applicable steps for properly installing a custom rom, and am pretty use to it as I've always flashed roms on as many phones as I could. Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
What model phone, to be clear?
Moto g7, xt19621. I tried to flash lineage again today to no avail. Twrp then copy. Zip. Reboot. Lineage. Wipe dalvic. Reboot. Previously tried wiping system and starting from scratch. Copy. Zip and start from scratch. Clean flash. Dirty flash. I've been able to get it to work properly maybe 2 or three times since having the phone and trying different roms. Basically always having to revert back to stock after a multitude of attempts. I've never had this much trouble flashing with a phone.

Do I need to flash stock to the 9eiginal firmware or something? I tried the stock room from August 2019, and kind 9f same issues. Device kinda bugged out.
If you're going to do a full article, always be sure to check and double check your process before sharing. The A/B slots on this device CAN cause mucho mucho errors if the user is unfamiliar or does not alternate correctly (TWRP can select boot slot, yes, but doesnt always work the right way), they can end up with a bricked device. I am excited to see a full guide be posted but for other people's sake, I recommend maybe clarifying the A/B details. I, personally, have yet to find a good A/B tutorial, and how they work during installs, online but if there is one and someone wants to share the link I'd sure appreciate it! Thanks and goodluck!

back up phone if you have third party backup application
(not absolutely necessary BUT, I always remove my security and google account before going into fastboot)
reboot to fastboot or power off phone and boot to fastboot by holding down the volume down+power
"fastboot set_active b"
"fastboot boot (drag your twrp img file from it's location to the command window) so that it reads sort of like "fastboot boot c:\path-to-twrp.img"
1. now install copy-partitions.zip
2. "Format, Advanced", type "yes" then back to TWRP main screen
3. install ROM of your choice (if installing Lineage, skip step 4)
4. install twrp-installer.zip (make sure you're using the zip format, not img)
5. "adb reboot bootloader"
"fastboot set_active a" (because when you installed the ROM, the device installed it to the inactive slot, in this instance that slot would be "a"
ADV: you may get a message indicating you're already on slot a, which is fine. 9 out of 10 times the device changes slot automatically after you reboot
post-ROM-install
6. from TWRP home choose "Advanced, ADB Sideload", check the two boxes and"adb sideload c:\path-to-gapps" (you'll need ARM64 gapps for this device)
7. IF you want magisk, from TWRP home choose "Advanced, ADB Sideload", check the two boxes and "adb sideload c:\path-to-magisk.zip"
8. "adb reboot bootloader"
9. "fastboot -w"
10. For whatever reason, magisk never stays on my device but I just install the apk and install it from the app.
Hope this doesn't annoy anyone and proves helpful.
@clinton I am definitely going to try this particular method. Setting B as active first is the one thing I have not done. I would like to point out that I am about to do fastboot boot twrp.img , however when installing the provided zip, my phone makes a weird noise on every screen tap. Like odd feedback from the speaker. If I use just lineage recovery that installs from the rom, it doesn't do that. Another thing that happens now - every lineage install goes fine until first boot. As soon as I sign on to WiFi and it tries to activate the radio, device just shuts down. Has anyone had this happen to them?
I am still experiencing the same issues. flashed back to original firmware and had no LTE. didn't resolve when flashing a custom rom. Flashed to latest stock rom and everything went through properly (LTE, no random reboot after unplugging), attempted rigmarole for flashing custom rom, same issues. x over signal bar and reboot as soon as I unplug the device. I have basically given up at this point, going to have a go at it again when stock android 10 update happens Thank you, guys, for all the help and tutorials. Big hugs, take care
