Wipe Fire OS and install Android from scratch? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've never had an Android device, so I'm probably wording it completely wrong. But I AM in technology, so I can get around and understand pretty quick.
I just bought my son a Fire HD 10 (2017 version) for his birthday. I set it all up for him and put one of his favorite games on it - Vainglory. We noticed that any time there is a decent fight on the screen, it will lag out for 2-3 seconds, and then catch back up real quick. From their website, the Fire HD 10 exceeds all the requirements to run the game smoothly, so I'm wondering if it's all the Amazon bloatware that is causing the lag. First, do you think if I replaced the Fire OS with just stock Android, would it increase performance? Do you think I'll still have these lag issues even if I put stock Android on it? Second, if you think it will help, how do I wipe the Fire OS and install stock Android?

Nobody has any suggestions?

we cannot unlock Bootloader right now, so we cannot install custom ROM on Fire HD 10 right now, one thing you can do is root the device and disable amazon apps to make it runs better

Do you think that will help? Because I'm a button press away from posting this on craigslist. Amazon Fire products are so trash, I don't know why I bought this. An iPad 2 (7 years old) runs the game better than the newest Fire HD 10 (1 year old). Yes, I understand I only paid $150 for it, but I was optimistic about it.
I'll probably just end up spending more and get the newest iPad for $330.

Hello jrossh21 --- I read your original post twice. I realized why nobody responded with the exact solution. Time has passed and you've probably bought your son the perfect tablet for gaming. BUT, I wonder if your wife or son can spot the reason nobody has responded. Ask wife and kid(s) and make sure they read your original post ..... maybe they will have to read your original post two or more times, but I know they just might notice the reason. Anyway, do your best and make sure they read this posting from me so they know this exercise is real. Take a few days and reply to let me know if they get it or not.....we are trying to find out if anyone in your family can spot the reason nobody has responded with the exact solution. Hint: it has to do with your original post...trust me on that.

@KingRoseNot Do you have friends in real life? Read your post and maybe you will understand why I ask. Please tell me what it's like to live a lonely existence without any human contact. I really want to know. You must be a master at alienating yourself from other people. Just read your post and you will see what I mean. No, read it slowly. Maybe then you might be able to possible grasp the subtle intricacies of my question. Probably not, but maybe.

It is very likely that Amazon has learned from their mistakes, and the next generation of KFs won't be as "easy" to crack. The Original KF forums are still just as active as they were before the 2nd gen devices came out, so I don't think there will be any shortage of development for either any time soon.

Yeah, but probably Amazon might be open development now. Most OEMs are now having Unlockable BLs. Hopefully, this is the same case for amazon. But that might not be a good strategy if they want to make money through the HDX. But let's accept it, things like the Amazon Appstore suck.

I have my doubts that they are open to development mainly because of the article posted in the HD 7” general forums, it said amazon was roughly breaking even on their kindle sales with appstore purchases and such. I hate to be pessimistic, but one can hope, personally I am hoping, think I'm going to see what I can find out about that processor.
Edit: hmmm well I looked it up online here, I don't see any mentions of security implementations, and as usual amazon seems to have slightly underclocked the processor, probably to give more battery lifetime or something. I find it interesting how this processor has the WiFi and Bluetooth and even the lte stuff all in one chip, and there is more than one model of the chip, they make models without lte, some with CDMA, and some with no support, so I'm guessing we might be seeing slightly different models across the devices for the lte versions. If this stuff is common, please excuse my ignorance, I'm more familiar with a PC processor than a phone processor. Interesting that this processor says it handles USB 3.0... Anyone find an article with some kinda security function that this processor might have? I couldn't find any on a basic Google search.

Hi guys, I've never used any kindle device before but the price and specs of Kindle Fire HDX got me all excited and I wanna buy it but in one condition and that is if it has Google Play. I hate Amazon Appstore it doesn't have 90% of the apps that Google Play has. What's the point of buying this powerful device if I can't play latest & greatest games and use different apps? I heard that kindle fire hd is rootable and can be converted to android? So I just wanna know if it's possible to could get access to all google play apps and games and play them on this device after it get released?
Thank You

No one is sure, until the device is released. There is Software Spec Sheet line around somewhere but until now, we got wait. We probably will be able to take root and android but that may take some time.

Probably, but it's a too difficult, and really the KF doesn't have the hardware you need for Fire OS. Its like trying to say a 1998 PC(No Upgrades) will be able to run Windows 8. Devs could port of but its too much work and not really worth it.

Fire HD 8 7th Gen 2017 - should I grab one?

Hi,
so I am fairly new (tbh: completely new) to Amazon tablets. I just saw the new tablets announced for June and thought about replacing my old-as-f*ck Nexus 7 with a HD7 or HD8. How is the experience so far - is it likely that you can easily root/remove the ads, put on a custom rom and so on? Will this limit the tablet in any way? Or do I need to leave it stock, otherwise not be able to use Kindle/Prime Video and so on? Thanks!

Most of the times as you can clearly see here on xda it takes a while or maybe even a long time, for the amazon tablets to be root able. I would buy a 6th gen right now, when your not connecting it to the internet it should be possible for you to root it right now (if it has the right software version installed).
If you want to buy a 7th gen then there is the problem that you can't connect it to the internet, because it will automatically upgrade you will have to wait until there is a method to root it before you can normally use your tablet....:crying:
Both the 6th and 7th Gen. Fire HD 8 are near if not identical specs wise, as above if your hoping for root buy the 6th Gen. as you may get lucky and get one with a pre-installed lower software version that's rootable, however you may not, the 7th Gen is very likely to come with 5.3.3 which I don't think is currently rootable.
As for custom ROMs, Amazons tablets are pretty locked down and as such there's little to no custom ROM development going on, not in recent years anyway. Go with something else if you like trying new ROMs otherwise the Fire HD tablets are pretty well made and you can sideload the Google Play Store pretty easily too.
Okay, I cross-referenced 2016 and 2017 and it's basically the same specs. Not sure it would be that much of an upgrade. I'll check what a 2016 HD 8 goes for at ebay.

Is it expected that loading Google Play on the 7th gen will work the same way as it did for the 6th? I don't need root or a custom ROM, but I don't want to be limited to the Amazon app store.
I will say that loading google play has worked so far on the latest HD 8. Used instructions and files linked here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603. Was able to load paid version of a couple apps and they worked fine.

I took my HD 8 (7th Gen) straight out of it's box and followed the instructions. Now someone reported in the other thread their Fire 7 (7th Gen) had issues with the versions linked in the thread. Mine was sitting at Amazon OS 5.3.3.0 out of the box and I didn't update that first. The guy with the Fire 7 stated he was at 5.4.0. One other person with the Fire 7 ran into a similar issue, but used newer versions of the Play Store and Play Services to get it working.
I just checked on my tablet and the Play Store and Play Services on the HD 8 just updated in the last 5 minutes, they are within the same build cycles as the one guy listed as working on his Fire 7.
Google play works
I took my tablet (hd 8 2017) straight out of the box in 5.3.3, follow the instructions in the link from this thread, google play works but location services dont. Factory reset, install google play with the files from the link again, and everything works!! after that, the tablet upgrade itself to 5.4, google play and services still works perfectly fine :victory::victory:. So the method and files in the link works, for me at least, if any problem appears just factory reset the tablet and try again. Sorry for my english.

Yes, Gmail from Google Play work correctly in my HD 8 2017.
so ive just found this site, only a couple days too late by the looks of it. i read (not very carefully) that it would be easy to root a kindle fire hd 8, so i just got one in the mail today (7th generation). i havent connected it to the internet, its got 5.3.3.0 on it, and my goal was to replace the stock OS with regular android. is this not currently an option?
(if not, any suggestions on what i should do/not do with it in the meantime? will connecting it to the internet begin an automatic software update that will render the device even more useless? i thought i read someone post something about that)
Fire HD 8 (2017) here on 8.4.0.0. Google apps sideload just fine. Removed lockscreen ads permanently just by submitting a help ticket.
It's a fabulous tablet for the price. I'm using mine primarily as a retro emulator although I can't find any good compact tablet gamepads (hoping to find a joycon-ish clone).

As far as I know, the difference between the 6th generation and 7th, is pretty much the programming and a few internal tweaks. I am about 90% sure there is nothing different about the physical hardware of the devices. So if you can find an HD 8 that's 6th generation, for real cheap, you can probably swap out the screen. There are several tutorials online if you do Google search, on how to do that. It sounds harder than it actually is. With that said, i am still looking for a cheap HD 7 so I can replace the screen in the one I have tucked away in a drawer.

ROM for Kindle Fire HD 8 2017

Hi,
Any ways I can install a 3rd party fresh ROM on my Kindle Fire HD 8 2017 edition? I am sorry for any confusion but did not find anything myself here.
I would like to know this as well as I just purchased one and while I like Amazon FreeTime for my kids, the lack of a REAL YouTube app makes the tab useless IMO as I'm a YouTube Red account holder and need to be able to save video offline for my son to watch while on the road. Standard Android parental controls are the best as I get to pick and choose what apps a child can use.

Currently there is no root for FireOS 5.3.2.1 or above. Without root, you can't install a custom ROM. When, or if root is found, it will be some time thereafter before a custom ROM might be available.

If YouTube is your only intention, then follow this thread. This will let you install All Google things without any problem.
If you understand things properly, you can also install newer version of those from the sources. Working fine for me. My intention is not to register my tab with Amazon but to lock apps so that my kids to not go anywhere wrong.
I just brought my Fire HD 10 2017 (12/15/17). I have it looking/ running almost like stock android. I have the play store, a few Google apps, an app draw & no adds on my lock screen. All without root. Iam still, however, fighting with getting live wallpaper to work & the lock screen wall paper changed.
Ahhhhh man I got so excited when I saw this thread then what a major let down. Any progress on root for the 7th gen. HD 8? I know you guys figured it out for the 10", but I 'm stuck with an 8" I got for Christmas so I went out and bought a SM-T580 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab A so I can have fun with root, custom ROMs, etc etc. I hope somebody can tell me some good news on the progress of rooting the 2017 7th gen. Kindle Fire HD 8. What about TWRP for it? No chance bc no root access I'd assume but I'm a noob, lolol. Cheers

Hi, this is currently the major thread looking for root. And, I'm really sad to say this, but the odds are very very high that there will not be TWRP available to this device, ever. Not because it's very hard to compile TWRP for MediaTek, but Amazon keeps their bootloaders locked down, forever. It will be impossible to install TWRP until we crack the bootloader, which is one of the hardest things in Android Exploiiting.

New Kindle Fire HD 10 5th Gen and its possibilities

Hello Guys,
I am new here and I just got an old Kindle Fire HD 10 Gift from a friend who said he doesn’t need it anymore.
So I had set it up, put my account to it and found….. It is sooo bloated with all that amazon stuff… It’s ridiculous…. I would say that I do not need like 80% of that stuff and totally miss like google mail, proper YouTube app and a lot more I have not found until now.
So I was looking now for like 3 days, whenever I had the time to search for it, if there is a custom Rom for the Kindle, or maybe root to get Google on the Kindle or how it is to be done to get apps maybe from my phone to the kindle.
Amazon made it really hard for users who are not sucked into the amazon universe to actually enjoy the Kindle, don’t they?
I have a bunch of paid apps in Google, they seem to be all useless now… what really kind of bugs me, because I had hoped to use the kindle as a comic book reader, where I use Comicat on android… no idea if kindle can even open them, but I’ll have to try.
So I would like to ask, are there some ways to root an Kindle Fire HD 10 with Fire OS 5.6.1.0 ? If so, how to do that and are there Custom Roms that would give a more basic Android feel?
I only found mostly some tutorials for 7” and 8”, but rarely for the 10” Tablet and nearly always for other Fire OSes.
So every help would be REALLY appreciated!
Follow this tutorial to get root https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/tut-fire-hd-10-7th-gen-2017-root-box-t3726443
To make it more stock like after you have rooted you can remove apps using root
You can also install google play store + apps from it by following this https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
You can also replace the default launcher with another like Nova but at the moment it uses a hack to get around a limitation even on root (Launcher Hijack)
You can also install xposed and there is modules on that which should give back some of your missing features https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/hd-10-2017-xposed-t3722252
At the moment there is no custom rom but some are in development.

Awesome, thank you very much, I will check everything and hope to have the Kindle a bit more.... Userfriedly, well, MEfriendly.
It would be indeed really cool if there is at least a bit I can do. Otherwise the Kindle would become more like an Videoplayer for my Kids than anything else... this would be a bit o a waste, as the device itself seems pretty nice.
Edit: The first and third Tutorial are for the 7th Gen HD8/10 Tablets, I have the 5th Gen. Wont there be a problem??

I'm not sure whether it works or not on older tablets, but there won't be a problem. Try it, I'm 99% sure that your tablet will be perfectly okay even it failed, because I tried that and failed, but I'm sending this from my tablet.
Good Luck! :good:

Kindle Fire HD 8.9

I would like to jailbreak this Fire and be able to add apps and use it as a dedicated device for a specific purpose. When I attempt to download the apps from the Amazon app page I see a notice that the device is not supported. I know I purchased this device in 2012 or 2013, so I know it is old.
So tell me would it be possible to jailbreak this device and put current Android OS on it and download some specific apps?

Do you have a HD 8.9 or HDX 8.9? They are very different devices with different paths to FireOS freedom.

No worries. You have a 2nd generation Fire HD 8.9 code named "jem". I have the 7 inch mode code named "tate". Both can be unlocked and accommodate a variety of custom ROMs. However, the path is not easy and will take a significant investment on your part to read up on techniques an caveats and then successfully apply them to your device. The following threads should prove helpful:

Alternatively, you can purchase a package that will simplify the process. This is one example:

The site may look childish but the product is the real deal. That said, it is likely the support staff has moved on as 2nd generation devices haven't been sold since 2012. You may not need them but you'd probably want to confirm availability before laying down any coin.
Keep in mind this device is 6+ years old with limited capabilities even with a custom ROM. A $40 phone from WalMart will easily run circles around this pup.
Good luck.
So it would probably be better to purchase a new/newer device for what I want. I mainly want the device to use as a dedicated bible with bible apps. I have a new Kindle Fire 7 inch with a 64 GB micro SD card. But with having 20-50 books , Calibre Companion, Moon+Reader pro and one bible app takes up all memory. This is before adding any additional purchases from the bible app. I have it where apps are suppose to be stored on the SD card but that does not help. I honestly hate getting rid of this Kindle Fire 8.9 since it is still working and holds a charge. I admit that I have side loaded most of the apps I want but I can't get one app to login so my info/notes will sync. This is why I thought about jailbreaking the device to see if I could get a new version of the app installed. Maybe I wold be better off searching for a refurbished iPad or buying a new Kindle Fire 8 or 10 inch. Something to think about.
Thanks so much for the help.

Installing a different Android version on any of the Amazon Fire's requires a custom rom.
Installing a custom rom requires either a unlocked bootloader or root access.
None of the 5th gen or newer have any means of unlocking the bootloader, and only the 7th gen HD 10 has a root method, but no custom roms.

Please do not take my response as being smart/snarky. I honestly do not understand a word you said except I can't jailbreak any Kindle Fire that is 5th generation or newer.
Only reason I want to jail break this one is because I cannot install a couple of apps that I want.

Jailbreak is an iPhone thing, does not apply to Android or in this case FireOS.
If is to just an apps problem, that doesn't necessarily mean you need to do any modifications like root.
The apps just do not install?

Okay I am showing how much I do not know about this stuff.
When I go to the app page at Amazon my device is not supported. The app is free so I have downloaded it and tried to sideload it. Again it will not install. I have found older versions of the app and some will install but they will not allow me to login and sync my info. I can login to the apps website via the device without any problems. The Wi-Fi signal is strong so that is not the problem. On my Kindle Fire purchased in July (used for digital books) the apps installs easily and I am able to log in.
Yes I know it would be easier to just put the app on the newer Kindle but the screen is smaller and some of the older adults at church enjoy seeing/reading all the different versions I pull up on the Bible. I just want to put the app on the larger screen Kindle and make it easier for everyone to see.
