Mi A1 is lagging after July 2018 Upgrade - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

Mi A1 is lagging after applying July 2018 Patch. I did factory reset and also Service centre performed Factory reset.
System is still lagging. Most of the application opens after 1 minute and errors out as "Close App/Wait" message
I thought applying August 2018 patch may fix the issue. So I applied the August patch and the lagging continues.
I called Mi support who refuse to take the complaint and said the supervisor will call, also could not give me a complaint number.
I waited for 2 days and no calls from Mi India
I tried all possible setup tweaks and still the phone is slow on all apps. (It takes 2 minutes to start the Phne and August patch took 2 hours to apply and I have 100 MBS Airtel FTTH at home)
Any idea?
Note: I am not a Game user and I use 10 apps maximum like Mail/Message/Phone/Whatsapp/Phone/Calculator/Map/Music
I ran the diagostics and all components are workng well and I raun Au tu benchmark and got the results as 81000.
I really appreciate any input....

I have the same problem. I tried to restart, reset, flash may patch, flash nougat... and the app crash continues.

I am thinking of using A1 as a replacement phone and move to NOkia 6.1+

this might be due to flash storage getting bad, but this shouldn't happen this early so either its a qc issue or something terrible as happened while tinkering custom roms/kernels. Did both of you used custom roms?

I just installed the GCam in the stock rom.
Sometimes, when i download something (or while google play updates the apps), the problem appears.

just mention if you used custom roms or not. just ask the service center guys fix it, its a hardware issue

Is it overheating? Check the temps when its lagging.
I've had no problems with lagging from July or August updates. Also no issues with GPS accuracy/speed, charging etc.

No, No Custom ROMS used.
Also the phone does not get heated up
I ran again other performance tools and found the issue in the Internal Storage
PCMark storage rating should 3020+ but my device returns 173
Seq Read rating is 13.64MB and it should be 221MB
Random Read is 0.13MB/s and it should be 10MB/s
Write rating is 14.1 MB/s and it should be 4MB/s
Randm write is 0.06MB/s and it should be 4MB/s

I took my phone to the service centre again and showed them the issue with the internal storage. They said I ran 3rd party tool and they will run BUG report and update me. They called me after 4 hours and said the issue is with the mother board and got it approved by Mi for the replacement. I hope to pick up the phone (with new MB) in a day and check for issues.
Thanks

Zenfone 2,Android 6 official ... reviews and bugs

Hi there
Lets talk about our experience after the MM update.
Me first...the system is smooth...
I think there s battery improvement(little)....maybe I feel wrong.
Three bugs...1.my approximity sensor was not always working properly...after the hard factory reset,I ve not seen that bug any more....2.google messenger does not have the new message notification on its icon....3.chrome address bar is sometimes not reachable(when some page is oper,I cannot click on the address to edit it,I have to make a new tab
Update
Another bug... wile incoming calls, sometimes the phone cannot take data from contacts....it starts with number, after some seconds,it shows the name of the contact
Bug on ZE550ML/Z008
Hi,
I did the update to MM 2 days ago.
First by just updating: very smooth, battery not really improved, even with doze, as my phone had already an excellent battery life in LL (2 days "normal" use) BUT:crying: got 2 freeze, no way to power off except by holding down power button at least 10s.
Then, I did a factory reset from MM and re-installed all my app with titanium backup.
Still smooth BUT 1 freeze again after some hours.:crying::crying:
I already got those freeze when testing the beta. So still not solve
Back to LL for me as it was extraordinary stable for me.
Thanks for feedback guys. I hope you report all of these to Asus to let them the chance to fix those bugs.

The addition of Facebook app let alone the Facebook messenger to a devices System which had/keeps having horrible battery life reviews is crazy. System apps can launch themselves, they will be never "patched" (less downloaded bytes) and God forbid, if a major security issue happens in that application, it will have very bad consequences as users _hate_ updating things.
I am waiting for first meaningful, suitable for daily use Cyanogenmod releases with the MM kernel and I am off to Cyanogenmod. If I buy another device, it will be stock Google Android, will never touch anything which has a BYTE changed from stock Android.
Returned back to stock .184 from AICP using shakalaca's pre-rooted image, then updated to
.194 using full firmware zip that pushed into internal memory, then updated again to MM .134 using the same method, and finally did a factory reset; everything works so far for me. Disabled a lot of junks and no problems.

You could disable startup for these apps thanks to Asus' own auto-start feature. Or, if you hate it, you could disable it at anytime. (I disabled Facebook and Instagram app, but leave Messenger enabled because I've some importance over it)

Is there any advantage on updating to V3?(performance,battery,etc)

Very smooth, none of the slowdowns that I used to get on L from RAM management / memory leak issues. Haven't encountered any bug yet except for being unable to factory reset, which always fails when it goes into recovery and tries to erase user data.

hmmm,i've seen a guy here saying that he did got back to LL from the last MM coz he had some freeze issues, well,i have no idea what the hell u had installed on your phone that coused that, for sure it has to be an app that cause that issue, not the OS itself, many do talk and have no idea of what they r talking about, first of all after u install a new version, make a factory reset, after that, stop doing a recovery from that titan whatever is name and install the apps 1 by 1 and find out the 1 that causes that issue, don't blame the OS coz u don't know what are you doing or using, yes it runs very smooth and faster,i dunno why some do say that they don't see improvements on battery, did u thought that all you have installed on your phone is causing that ? to many apps using internet (facebook, instagram, buzz, games etc) ? all the internet use make battery run down very fast in case u didn't know, another yes,the new firmware comes with lot of bull****s app, like facebook, messenger, that crappy useless manger that claims to kill apps for more memmory (actually it is just a theory claim, not actual thing that it does,i can give an explanation to that),iread and i think a few more that i never used and never will, but yes,u can very easy deactivate them, which i always dowith all i hate, which i really think they should be optinal apps to download from google play, not to come by force preinstalled,i do use the phone pretty much, and just normal on internet, those parts do make battery go down pretty fast, but in standby...2 days easy,in 8 hours (night) standby it only droped the battery down 3%,i doubt it was the case in LL
Feels fine, despite possible OS problems (Android draws most of battery). Anyway, a better experinece.
BTW - Just seen that this is a 32bit MM 6.0.1. How can the system utilize full 4GB of RAM?
Any sensor is working for me. I did a clean installation, flashing last LL firmware. Than I put MM firmware on internal storage.
MM is working fine and smooth. But no one sensor is working.
Another app

Latest suggestions on lag and freezes

I bought the phone from Sprint and used it for Sprint; then now Cricket. Sprint has terrible service here; I roamed for days sometimes traveling for work. I would swear the phone freezes and lags more when you are in that funk area of having no service or poor service.
Most of my freezes are when I'm driving; that's most of my phone use anyway. I've used app killers and memory boosters, and I keep reading that those actually do more harm.
I have an iphone for work and it never freezes; and my best android experience was with a Huawei Honor 8; it had no freeze to speak of.
Is it the phones hardware, how it plays with apps, or does it just need more ram, or are there bad/buggy apps? It's not uncommon for me to use Waze, Uber Driver, Glympse, and an app that either plays audio, or sometimes video like DirecTV. It will almost always freeze.
I've done resets and restores. Wonder if a fresh reset and reinstall of apps would have any good effect?

Do not use any app killers or memory booster. They do more harm then benefit.
If you are on Nougat, update to Oreo Beta 3. Or wait for a few days. Essential will be pushing 8.1 beta soon, hopefully within this week.
I use Waze everyday, and have never had freezes. I'm running OB3.

Thanks for the suggestions,it just seems like beta builds, for someone who uses the phone to make money (where you need 100 reliability), are not the best choice.
I'm not saying Waze is an issue, that's just one of several apps that o have open during the problem times. When I do use the ram boosters they typically indicate they are finding almost 1 gb to free up.

FREE RAM is wasted RAM. As per feedback here and in other forums, Oreo Beta builds have been much more reliable than Nougat builds.
I never ran Nougat, so can't compare unfortunately. But OB2 and OB3 has been rock solid for me.

I would suggest you wait for a few days. Apparently Essential has fixed a lot of bugs in 8.1 beta. They did mention that the may release it within this week. If you don't feel comfortable on Beta, you can go back to Nougat, but you will loose your data.

@cfclay - Today, in order to help combat sluggishness and choppy scrolling, I turned on Force GPU rendering in developer options. It's helped in my opinion. That's usually a setting developers use when testing, but since this is more or less a test build, I figured I'd give it a shot. I also changed my transition animation settings to .5x from 1x. While that won't help smoothness, if you're getting laggy experience it may help speed some things up a bit for you. May be worth a shot and may just give the perception things have improved, but overall I've been very pleased with the performance of the oreo beta 3 release.
@indian84 - where is everyone getting this information that oreo 8.1 beta may come out on friday (I've seen that mentioned in several places) or in the next few days. The only thing I can find is where Essential just said they were skipping 8.0 to jump straight to 8.1. Can you point me to where timeframes have been mentioned? Thanks in advance.
Hey, I sideloaded Essential Phone Oreo Beta 3 (OPM1.170911.254 and I have a dumb question- how can you tell it applied. There were no errors on the computer, but I think there may have been something on the phone that said installation aborted, just barely noticed before I chose to reboot.

So going back to your original issue. Sprint did cause the phone to lag and do weird things. That was a given. I was able to get out and use TMobile. the difference is night and day. I do want to point out that cricket caps it's lte speeds at 8mbits, this is from having cricket before and it would sometimes drop to 3 and 4 is more consistent. I'd check the snrs and the speed you're getting from cricket , in 2018 8mbit cap feels a little low

I'm on the unlimited 2 plan and getting 3 Mbps lol. Still, works beautifully compared to Sprint. I do see your point though. This is my first month to try this service, and I've used about 10gb a week and it works just fine, so I'm sticking to it.

But effing with the GPU does not fix the issue... It's just your rose colored glasses...
Neither performance for the governor... Nor any setting in developer options will fix it...

Yeah, it hasn't fixed anything.
The lag and freezes has nothing to do with being on Sprint versus being on Cricket or any other carrier. I get the random freezes and lags too and it's really frustrating. The phone throttles and unthrottles itself at random times with no rhyme or reason. I'm all stock, not rooted, no beta software and the phone would stutter, lag, freeze while i'm doing something mundane. Also touchscreen issues at times.
I already have (had) my device setup the way i want, so not interested in starting all over just to try/test out beta software. I'll just wait for the official Oreo to drop.
Certain apps seem to really cause problems. I reset my phone and installed most of the apps again. When you connect carplay and use another GPS app like glympse, it can be a complete dumpster fire. Locked up on me twice today

8.1 update rolling out!

So about 1,1 GB update is available for us. What is your opinion on the update? Did it fix all of your issues or brought you way more issues?
The hissing sound is finally gone, I can't see any bug right there (someone faced the uncertified bug, but for me isn't here, maybe try to reboot), I'll see if the battery now isn't draining too much like in May update
If hissing is fixed, can anyone extract necessary audio related files?
Under phone info there is a (prerelease) kernel, dunno why

my phone got snappier after update, but fingerprint scanner got a bit slower.
My phone certainly felt slower after the 8.1 update.
I did not encounter the SMS message bug but some hours after the update I lost WiFi connection altogether (could not enable WiFi, mac address 2:0:0:0... I had no choice but to reflash from stock image. After the reflash I'm still at 8.0, as the reflash phone is not seeing the 8.1 update yet.
FYI I use Magisk and Franco kernel app. When the 8.1 update is available for my phone again I'm going to take more time with backup and checking that there are no compatibility issues.

Wifi MAC address problem ìs not from stock 8.1 but from incompatible kernel (like FK for now).
A pretty decent update in my case. Didn't encounter any bugs or issues so far, only that phone was really slow after first boot but after maybe 10 minutes or so it started working as fast as 8.0.
I like how the colors are now changing according to the dominant color of the wallpaper, but tinting on lockscreen or under notifications in that same color is a little bit weird... but I'll probably get used to it.

Xiaomi pulled the 8.1 update and its no longer available so we should wait until they release a bug-free version of it.
Did this fix the scroll lag?
Xiaomi pulled back the update. Those updated should receive an incremental update to fix bugs.
You had one job, and for how many times Xiaomi is pulling updates after they release is to their devices, in this case, to Mi A1?
Really, we are talking about the Android One device, and only one device that is out there on the market.
And for the love of God, this is 8.1 update, nothing major.
Looking forward what they will do with the 9.0 update and how long we will wait for it.
Luckily, on my dad´s Mi A1, it is still 8.0 and february security patch, I was waiting for this update to install on his phone but this happens. Also I don´t know if it is true about the audio, it is lowered after some updates after may month I think. I don´t know if everyone is affected or not.

I think you have faulty device. Mine is 10 months old and results looks fine.
Do I have defective unit too?
Edit - This is 10 months old device
Here's my results

Similar problem. I wrote about her in another tride. A couple of days ago, somehow it turned out to return the normal values of memory, as I wrote. Now, for the experiment, I install a custom Pie ROM and the speeds are low again ... I will test further and look for a solution.
I remember a long time ago that my original Nexus 7inch started doing the same thing. There was a bug that stopped the NAND being Trimmed. I found a utility to fix it and worked much like a defragger I think. If you have issues, maybe you can do a search for a TRIM app and run it and post the results.

I hope it works for you.. I took a reading then I just ran FStrim three times and then retested. It improved my sustained write times quite a bit. All of my other readings were otherwise fine.

Terrible performance after Galaxy S8 SM-G950U One UI/Pie update

Hi all,
My phone performance is terrible, everything runs slow and lagging since I took the update. Phone performance was very good before. Anyone else experience this and have any ideas to bring performance back to par?
Thanks for any help.
Factory reset or full wipe after updating to a new firmware. Also, do not restore Google apps, just start from a scratch.
I also have serious lag, it feels like a budget phone. I've had this phone since it launched, and installed every update without precaution. This is the first time experiencing these issues.
Frame rate is terrible, especially while scrolling. Delays in pressing buttons or launching apps have grown from milliseconds to sometimes two or three seconds. No other problems(aside from poor design choices). It feels like aggressive power throttling, not memory issues.
As soon as I saw that so much manual power management has been replaced by a "learning" system, I'm skeptical that the usual fixes will do anything for my problems, especially considering there is no other malfunction. Anyone else?

Samsung Galaxy s8 SM-G950W. Yes. Ever since the update, my Samsung is losing files., running slow and unable to use previously used apps. Substranum, fonts etc.
It's Samsung way of saying - "Buy galaxy S10"
I didn't fell any difference at all in performance.

Well, that's what I was waiting to hear. If ppl aren't universally having the issue, then a factory reset may cure the problem. I'll give it a try soon.
Yes i just got bad performance after installing pie (custom rom, so i always factory reset or it wont work) but yeah after 14 days my phone start to slowing down like old smartphone and the apps is not starting correctly (e.g i must start magisk manually or the root wont work (the app cant detect if phone is rooted even when magisk hide is off)).
I try the LightROM and ALEXIS and both have this problem (performance way worse on lightrom). I know this isnt their fault but the samsung fault (maybe because its early relase? Or...).
Note : performance is normal in the first day, but after 14-30 days the phone start to acting weirdly (the apps behave weirdly) dunno why.
Btw i use SM-G950FD
After restarting about 5 times, then manually clearing cache partition, I was able to get smooth performance. Unfortunately, I still have to restart at least once a day to prevent lagging animation. This is with light usage: streaming, facebook, email.
I turned on "reduce animations" in advanced features, and set the animation scales to 1.5 with dev options. This seems to help prolong smooth operation, but I still have to restart daily. Next step is factory reset, I have a lot to backup...
fresh install thru odin and start all over again is really good solution. at the beginning i also experiencing lag
Mine has an issue of having the fingerprint not working after it was changed. I have to do one of the following:
1. Restart and boot via safe mode then if it works, reboot again
2. Restore Settings from synced backup
3. Reset Settings
So much of a hassle.... I am thinking of rooting this soon.

Had the same problem so flashed official firmware (for my carrier, downloaded from sammobile) with Odin. This part can be done without of rooting your phone.
Do this first (back up your data before as clear flash will delete everything), and test after if it works well. If not, root it (https://forum.xda-developers.com/sa...w-to/guide-root-install-twrp-samsung-t3747535) and install adaway from xda labs.
If you root the phone or install TWRP, e-fuse will break and you cannot go back after that. Warranty will be void and the Samsung fit app won't work anymore.
Fortunately, there are workarounds on a rooted phone (https://tinyurl.com/yy37gnwv) so that is not a big deal, at least for me.
Not sure when you root it if wave pay services will work so do some research first.

Has your lag subsided after time? Mine appears after a night's sleep. It never fails: Restart in the morning, smooth scrolling all day. Next morning, laggy, stuttering scrolling until I restart again. I've uninstalled all unused apps and left power mode on high performance. No change. As soon as I wake up, animation lags like a budget phone. Everything else is reliable, just not the animation.
Of course, I don't actually know what's going on, but I'm willing to bet that this new power management system that we can't control is to blame. If I have to go through all the odin, etc steps, I may just roll back to oreo. Pie is prettier, but I want my smooth operation back.

S10e gets similar reception to my A8(2018). When I got the A8 I had a S8 before that, and i don't remember there being any difference in signal. I live in poor signal area, so if a phone had bad signal, I'd probably remember because I owuldn't have any signal at all.
This is really quite unacceptable. I took the OTA update and the lagging began. I've never had an issue with an OTA update. I've never done a factory reset after an OTA update either. Flashing custom ROM is different but this is from Samsung...
Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve daily reboots or a factory reset? I just find that really inconvenient.

Yes, I agree. It's hard to know at whom who to point the finger. Google, Samsung, or both. Regardless, it's very disappointing, and hurts my impression of both companies.
I'm currently allowing the phone to run for 7 days to see if the root method listed above by robyos may be feasible for my tmo s8.
If manually restarting is the only hurdle for you, it can now be set to restart automatically (I guess they anticipated this?) Settings > device care > three dots > auto restart.
It feels like a duct-tape band-aid, but it's there. After my 7 day test, I'll probably give this auto-restart a try. However, I'm concerned about the terribly annoying tmo jingle at each restart.

I'm thinking the problem may be googles not Samsung's...I had a OnePlus 5 for almost 2 years. At some point after the pie update it would stutter while scrolling or during animations intermittently. Even a factory reset didn't fix it. The phone was still fast but it was aesthetically annoying seeing the stuttering.
I drown the phone in the ocean on vacation this month and had to replace it so I got a used s8. I haven't had the same issue with scrolling but I've only had it for a couple weeks so far on a fresh wipe. It had some "normal" Samsung lag that the OnePlus didn't have while opening apps and it doesn't keep nearly as much in memory (4gb vs 8 GB RAM). But I'm still thinking the problem may be with pie itself since people were complaining about stuttering on both Samsung and OnePlus phones.
Hopefully my s8 is not affected and it's only certain ones experience it.

Wow! It's sad to hear an 8gb phone would still have the same issue. I wonder if this has to do with power management. Perhaps it's squeezing a tiny percentage of battery life out of saving some frames. It drives me crazy and gives me a headache. I wish they'd provide a simple switch for whatever this is.
This os feels like they ventured into breaking what works in an endless quest to fix what wasn't broken. Perhaps some team of programmers is celebrating minute improvements, but it's coming at the expense of the consumer, who never signed up to be the guinea pig. Each update seems to remove or break basic reliability and functionality that we paid for. I feel like I paid a premium price to become a software tester.
So reboots don't seem to fix the lag I'm experiencing when opening and closing certain apps. This phone was plenty fast before for me. Other issues are present now too. Auto adaptive display brightness doesn't work as well. I also really think it's sheet that you can't disable GPS and have the battery saving mode anymore! WTF Samsung.
