Issue with screen turning on and relocking randomly...going crazy with this! - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Out of a sudden my Axon 7 G version started turning off the screen without warning or order to do so and when it is off it will randomly turn the screen on. Tested the sensors and they are ok, even did a factory reset. It works well for about ten minutes after a reboot then it goes into this madness making the phone unusable. I think it is software (B10, 7.1.1 Mi Favor 4.2) because when it does that it shows a previous lock screen image . turnin ZTE locker on or off does nothing to help....please help me. Before i kill this phone against a wall.

This doesn't sound like a software issue to me as you have done all relevant checks but more hardware related.
This reminds me of a very similar issue I had with my Galaxy S4 which turned out to be caused by a dirty USB port. Try cleaning it gently with some cotton buds and if you have access to it, isopropyl alcohol.
I believe this behaviour can also be caused by water (even a small amount) getting inside a device but I expect you would know if it had got wet.

it could very well be the button flex. i had one of my Axon 7 get stuck in FTM mode everytime it powered on, regardless of my button presses. come to find out the button flex had failed and the down button sensor was stuck. this is the part. jerryrigeverything on youtube has a great disassembly video. if you still have warranty, you can RMA, but if you take it apart, RMA will cost ya $80. that was for two button flex, btw.

My Axon A2017G would randomly unlock and load YouTube ...or start making calls at random ..
I turned off screen locker ...and changed to swipe pattern to unlock also disabled Mipop and Mi assistant this seem to solve it for me ..
I'm now running Oreo on my Axon with no problems so far
I hope this helps

[Q] Nexus 4 hardware issues

Hi,
After being a long time lurker and benifiting hugely from the XDA community, I've ran into a problem with my Nexus 4 that has led me to create this thread (after having found nothing through searches).
I recently dropped my phone into a pond (clean pure water). I plucked it out quickly, dried it off, removed my SIM and left it to sit in some rice for 48h.
I pulled it out, and it worked just fine. However, as often happens with water damage, I am now, several days later, experiencing some frustrating issues.
When the screen switches off (screen timeout, lock button, proximity sensor during a phone call) I am unable to wake it. The screen is still responsive to touch, as I can unlock the screen and then hit the volume buttons and hear a sound, or if music is playing it will continue to play for example, so the phone isn't off. When in the right light, I can actually see the screen, but it's very very very dim (unusable).
I am rooted + CWM + custom roms / kernels.
What I have tried :
- Changing roms (AOKP, CM)
- Kernels (Franco, stock, CM) to no avail, as well as doing a factory data reset from CWM.
- More rice
- Software stuff, like disabling lock screen, setting brightness to max, using volume to unlock.
What I haven't tried:
Doing a full reset with a factory image (as I'm currently on holidays)
Opening the phone and playing around.
Has anyone experienced similar issues? Any help would be appreciated. Is this just a send back to Google situation?
Many thanks,

Your backlight has became faulty. Presumably the circuitry that tells it to turn on when out of standby is damaged, I'd suggest sending it to google as this will be very hard to fix at home without good knowledge of circuitry and good practice with a soldering iron.

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I was curious as to whether it was a hardware issue or not, seeing as the backlight did work for a few days, and that the backlight does work when I switch the phone on.
I guess this is a send back to Google then... Although I have no idea how much they charge for repairs.
Cheers,

The phone is reworking now... from time to time. In the past 3 weeks it's gone totally back to 100% functionnality 3 times, for about 48h total. It seems totally disjointed from what i'm doing (driving, or in a club).
When the phone works properly, the Screen shows up in my battery consumption stats normally ; I have noticed when the backlight is not working (so I'm unable to wake the phone) that the "Screen" does not show up in the battery consumption stats. What could this mean? I'm still tossing up about sending the phone to Google or just selling it for parts and buying a new Nexus. If the phone is sometimes working, does this mean it should be a quick (and cheap) fix? Or will the whole motherboard have to go?
Thanks again

Dead Lumia 520, screen is damaged, help needed.

I have obtained a water damaged Lumia 520. I opened it up and dried it while also clearing any oxidation from the various contact points. The phone displayed the bolt+gear icon on screen but the screen kept flashing and fading. I figured the phone needed the firmware to be reflashed so I downloaded the software recovery tool and it detected the phone and flashed the firmware without error. Then the phone actually worked albeit with a black screen, I could hear the little noises and stuff so it was working under the black screen. I figured that maybe the screen could be salvaged by cleaning the contacts and letting it dry up completely, but after I put the phone together it wouldn't work anymore at all, it basically turns on for a few seconds and turns itself off. The software recovery finds it and I can reflash the firmware but it still doesn't work. I tried checking all the internal connectors but now there doesn't seem to be any way to make it work even with the dead screen.
Is there something I need to touch on screen to make it work? I never had a Windows Phone so I don't really know and I can't see the screen. And do you geniuses know what might be wrong with it and how can I tell if it's just the LCD that has been killed by the water or if the motherboad might be FUBAR as well? What could be causing it to turn off after a few seconds? The battery is definitely not dead as I left it to charge for a long time.
Actually I just managed to "fix" it. The screen comes on after I cleaned the contacts and messed with it a bit, it just looks really bad and it's full of line but I can see what's on screen and use the phone. My issue now is that the bolt+gear icon appears at every reboot and doesn't go away. The only way I have to boot the phone normally is to hold camera and volume down after I reboot it. What does this mean? Other than that the phone seems to be working perfectly once it actually boots.
I just managed to bring it back to life completely. Screen contacts were water damaged but I managed to get them working again and now the screen is perfect. It kept getting stuck on the bolt+gear icon after every reboot because the volume+ button was stuck but I managed to unstuck it and now the phone is perfect. So yeah if you have a flashing screen after water damage check the contacts, if your phone doesn't boot and keeps getting stuck on that icon try to unstuck the volume+ button.

V20 Black Screen

Woke up this morning and started using my phone, noticed that the screen became unresponsive for a few seconds at a time and then I saw some gray horizontal lines.
Did a battery pull and restarted the phone, however, the screen is completely black and I can still hear the boot sound.
It requires a pin to start completely and I can feel the vibration when I touch the location of the back button (the only navigation key available on the pin screen).
Since this started happening I have tried restarting several times and I have seen the "LG splash screen" once, it freezes, the boot sound plays and the screen goes black once again.
The phone is unrooted and has never been modified any at all. It is the US996 variant.
Has anyone ever faced this issue? Could it be the display itself and maybe a replacement LCD will fix the issuse?
UPDATE
Got past the pin screen and think the phone has fully booted, fingerprint scanner works, I can touch the navigation keys and get feedback and I am still getting notifications.
However, the main screen is still blank and the second screen shows the time surrounded by static surrounded. I have attached a photo.
Sounds like a hardware issue.

Had to send it in to LG to have it repaired
Oddly enough once it was returned the problem reoccured a few weeks later after using an aukey quick charge3.0 charger that I had. Which was when it happened the first time but I didn't make the connection until the second time around
I got rid of the phone though
No more LGs for me, I haven't had much luck with them
Throw that charger seems like or the cable or the charger itself gone bad ,one charger killed 2 of my phones not diferent brands

Oneplus 5 Black screen after replacement

My OP5 screen had a small crack so I decided to repair it. After following the tutorial on youtube step by step the phone powers up fine. But as soon as the screen goes to sleep, it get stuck in black, although it feels like responsive (Ican hear the clicks and vibrates and all) but it wont wake up

Could you wake up the screen? Maybe it's a connection problem or related to the proximity sensor?
Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I have exactly the same problem, but it happens only with Android 9.0. Oreo seems to be working OK, but as soon as I upgrade to official 9.0, the screen won't wake up from sleep. The backlight turns on, but the screen stays black. The phone works OK as long as I use it, but if I press the power button or let it to enter "standby mode", it will stay that way (off). I suppose it has something to do with the replacement screen, but since it works with 8.0, I wish there was a workaround to get the LCD to work with Pie too.
Same problem here. Replaced display too.
I've had a similar issue with a different device before (ZTE nubia Z7 mini). I replaced the screen and it would work correctly, but when I booted TWRP, I would get a black screen. I figured that because the replacement screen was not an OEM one, it may have something to do with LCD drivers in the recovery. I used the old cracked screen with the device opened up to navigate in the TWRP recovery, and I flashed an newer/different recovery. Voila, the new recovery worked with my replacement screen. Based on this experience, it may just be an LCD driver compatibility issue with the replacement screen, causing the screen to just go into forever sleep mode. The driver may need to be changed or tweaked in the Pie version for your replacement screen to work with it. Just a thought, not fully certain.

You're probably right about the driver issue. My OP5 has no problems whatsoever with Android 8.1, but 9.0 won't work no matter what I do after waking up the device. The backlight turns on and and off for a few times after which nothing happens. The phone is still working normally, but it's in "blind mode" (music will continue playing, volume buttons work...but they're kind of slow and laggy) Too bad that the latest update (9.01) didn't fix this issue either. I really wouldn't hold my breath getting this issue fixed anytime soon (officially) as it seems to be a cheap 3rd party screen problem.
edit: I tried the custom recovery (20181227) and the same thing happens there. Once screen goes off, it won't come back on.
Edit 2: gave up on the replacement screen and ordered an oem lcd. Lets see how it goes.

Do keep us updated if changing the display again fixes this issue. Would be interesting if someone had a fix for 3rd party displays but as of now it seems that's highly unlikely

Sure.
Got the new OEM amoled screen today. It's brighter, more responsive and doesn't get stuck (black screen) with Android Pie. Problem solved. Price was 3 x higher than the cheap 3rd party screens, but definitely worth it (around 80 euros). All screen gestures work as well.
Bought it on Witrigs (https://www.witrigs.com/oem-lcd-screen-assembly-for-oneplus-5-midnight-black). it came really well packed and arrived fast (7-10 days to Finland). I highly recommend this screen and Witrigs to everyone
Also changed the screen from a friend and have this strange behavior, that the screen won't turn on .. only when I reboot or double press the power button so it launches the camera - the delay tho is about 7s, which is insane! you guys think this is the screen problem, or did I damage something and if yes, what? I repaired about 100 phones in total already ..

Sounds a lot like my OP5 with cheap 3rd party screens which would hardly work at all with Android Pie. If your friend's phone is running on Pie, try downgrading it to Oreo and see if that helps. My phone worked moderately with Oreo but not at all with Pie (wake and touch issues). Currently my OP5 is running Android Pie perfectly with the screen that I bought on Witrigs.

Bizarre, have you tried the usual factory reset / rom reflash? If you confirm that its not a software related issue, then it probably is just the screen if its not an OEM part. Can't see what else would be the issue here unless there was other kind of damage before the repair maybe
Like @sbasil mentioned, it could just be due to the non-OEM screen being incompatible with Pie drivers.
Thank you for saving my phone

Mine not working with lineage base rom but is good with last pie 9.0.8. Did you try it?
Have this issue too
My OP5 has its original AMOLED screen. Running OS 9.0.8. This started happening after the most recent update. At least I never noticed it before.
I ran *#808# diagnostics, thinking maybe it's the proximity sensor, or the fingerprint scanner, but everything passed.
Also while locked, ambient display works. It's just getting the Home screen to appear after waking the phone that's become agonizing. And it does wake, the touch screen is responsive, it's just completely blind.
I mean consider this: I can take a screen shot, a screen shot, while the screen is in ambient display and the screen shot is of the home screen.
Pressing the power button or home button or notification slider repeatedly sometimes coaxes it to appear, but the only sure way to get the Home screen back is to restart the phone.
I had a black screen issue after changing the screen to an OEM AMOLED one, and after tearing my hair out for a couple of hours, I discovered that turning off " night mode" fixed the problem instantly
Same happened to me... cracked screen, purchased 'OEM screen' installed. Some apps work, some just black screen.
Driver issue? Running Pie 9x. Anyone had success with this by dropping back to Oreo? Would it do anything different to flash the Pie Firmware?
I repair/upgrade OnePlus 3/3T/5/5T phones to donate to families in need at the local family shelter. Some of them have lost or had to sell their phones just to get food and such. Now they need one to arrange job interviews and housing, things of that nature. So anyways, all that to say this.... I have replaced a LOT of displays, and all of them were the 'cheap' ebay variety. Each and every time I would replace the display, the phone would act just as described in this thread.
After long hours of reading, searching, and experimenting, I have found the ultimate and final solution to this problem. The answer to this issue is simple, but was not so simple to find. Whenever anyone does a screen replacement, and the screen is not the high-priced OEM variety, their phone will almost always have extreme difficulty in waking. The fix, and it has worked for me 100% of the time, is to flash a custom kernel. For the OP5/5T the kernel I use that always works is the Affinity kernel. Just flash and forget. The phone will always wake up after you flash that kernel.
However, don't forget, that what also happens with these lower priced replacement screens is that you can no longer double-tap to wake. I still haven't found a solution for that problem, but it always happens each time I replace a screen. The kernel won't help with that. But it does fix the 'won't wake up' problem.
Try it for yourself and see. You will be happy you did!

I'm not clear about what you are asking. What exactly are you calling FW?? Some people mean radio and camera firmware. Some people mean the custom rom that gets flashed. What do you mean?

Split-Screen - Squeeze/Connector Reattach - Does Not Fix

Display is only showing the left side of the screen. Right side of the display looks like static. You've all seen this before on the forum. Touch still works on the entire screen.
The squeeze fix never worked. Tapping on the device or any other physical manipulation has never fixed this issue at any time. No changes, not even a flicker.
This issue persists even during boot, during recovery and fastboot. Persists after factory resets and even bootstack changes. I have not attempted a full reset to stock as under the circumstances it seemed like it'd be ineffective.
Opened phone. Ribbon cable was secured. Popped it off, reseated it. Didn't work. Reseated it again no go. Applied a strip of electric tape to the sponge pressing on the Connector in case it wasnt applying proper pressure. No good.
Here is what did, strangely, improve the situation.
Played a video on it one day just to listen to it. While doing so, spun the phone around absent mindedly on its axis like a figet spinner. At some point the problem had gone away. Cycling rotations seemed to have fixed it. Then when the screen went off, it came back when I turned it back on.
From this point forward whenever I reboot the device the screen was fixed and remained fixed until the display is turned off. If I cycle the display the issue returns. A reboot fixes this until the display goes black even once. If I leave it on for hours it never returns.
---Wtf.
Autorotation doesn't seem to fix the issue anymore. For a short time, it seemed as if I could turn off the screen by other means and it would come back on without issue as long as I didn't touch the power button. This is no longer the case and this only lasted a day.
----
So tldr
• Screen has half screen issue (right side)
• Ribbon secured. (Phone currently open for testing)
• Rotation fixed issue. For a shirt time shutting off display by using shortcuts and coming back on with fingerprint had the phone working with no issue until I'd push the power button to turn off the display. This would have the issue return.
• After one day this no longer works and issue returns whenever the display turns off regardless of mechanism.
• Rebooting the device fixes the screen, and remains fixed until such a time when the screen turns off either manually or idle. Upon powering on the display hte issue returns and goes away on reboot.
• Soft reboots do not fix the issue for some reason.
• If I go into recovery with the screen fixed, and power off the display and power it back on the half - screen issue returns. This isn't a ROM issue.
• I am rooted. On an old 8.1.0 AEX ROM I have been using since last year. I stopped updating or messing with my phone as I found the zen in stability. No issues the entire time, until now.
•At the end of my rope.
Thank you. Hope this is clear enough. Really appreciate the help.

did you do anything to the phone before? Battery change for example?
I suspect your screen flex cable is bad, but since you could recover from it by turning it off and doing some voodoo magic, it kind of sounds like software... maybe just try one of the new device-specific Pie ROMs
But yeah, wtf
Actually thinking about it, it's probably the screne controller. It should have an off state and maybe a low power mode (for always on display). Of course a screen swap on the Axon makes little sense at this point.
