Android Pie - HTC U11 Guides, News, & Discussion

From twitter @HTC:
We're pleased as pie to confirm updates to Android Pie for the HTC U12+, U11+, U11, and U11 life (Android One). Timeframes for roll-out will be announced in due course.
We can't wait to know what you think of Google's freshest slice of Android! https://t.co/mPJePFegne

Great news!
https://www.xda-developers.com/htc-u11-u11-plus-u11-life-u12-android-pie/

Ok guys, finally I got my notification for the Pie update. I own the free european 64 GB dual-sim variant and I'm in German T-Online network.
I hope this is the fixed update that won't soft-brick the U11...
Any information on that?

Wow this thread is nearly a year old!

Is it me or are there a lot of features of Android Pie missing in the update of HTC?
There is no:
Adaptive Battery
Intuitive Navigation
Digital Wellbeing
Etc.
https://www.android.com/versions/pie-9-0/
Actually the things I noticed up to now are only:
Adaptive Brightness
Do Not Disturb
Redesigned Quick Settings
Volume controls
Security patch level of July 2019
Anything else?

Adaptive battery and digital wellbeing are implemented. You have to use the search box under settings to find them.
Gestures in a device with hardware buttons is useless, in my opinion

Is the GPU updateed on pie or still at old driver??

So far everything is looking and working good. But I'm not yet done with setting up everything after the full wipe and update...
Adaptive battery and digital wellbeing are there, indeed.
Security patch is july 2019.
Quick settings are in new style and dark theme is working (but on quick settings only - I hoped for a complete theming...)

Digital Wellbeing I found using the search (and selecting to see the icon in the app drawer).
But the adaptive battery I cannot find...can you please send me a screenshot or instructions?

Omg! I am backing stock now. I hope this update come for Turkey too

Thanks! I did find this menu, but I see nothing called adaptive battery. Is this the Battery Manager (Gestor de batería on your screen)?
It looks/sounds different than the (description of the) official Android Pie functionality:
https://www.thurrott.com/mobile/android/165432/android-9-pie-feature-focus-adaptive-battery
So I'm not sure if this is the same

Yeah, maybe is not the same... But the description that appears in the menu is very similar... I am not sure.
Thanks for the info.

Seems Italy and Germany got the first waves in Europe this time...
I'm shure you'll get the update soon.
Btw. I searched manually for an update via the settings app and then got the notification...
@ artlost: It is a bit hidden and tricky to find. It is active by default and I had to use the search within the settings menu to finally find it...
In German they call it Akku-Manager. So I guess it might be named different from adaptive battery in you language, too...(if your system language isn't english, of course)
Good luck

Thanks! Well, my system language is English and here it is called "Battery Manager " which obviously is different than "Adaptive Battery".
In the official description it states that it should "Limit battery for apps that you don't use often":
https://www.thurrott.com/mobile/android/165432/android-9-pie-feature-focus-adaptive-battery
But the Battery Manager's description is: "Detect apps drain battery". Which seems like a different functionality.
Whereas the adaptive brightness in HTC U11 Pie is called Automatic brightness, but with a description which mentions ..."You can move the slider manually to help adaptive brightness learn your preferences.". So although it is called differently, it is the adaptive brightness from the official Pie.
Maybe I'm going to deep into this, but I don't understand why HTC just doesn't use the same functionality and call it the same as in the official Pie release.
EDIT
I digged a little bit deeper into this and it seems that it indeed is the Adaptive Battery functionality. If I enter the developer options, I do see the different statuses of the standby apps (ACTIVE, RARE, etc.):
https://android.gadgethacks.com/how...id-pies-new-adaptive-battery-feature-0186920/
Anyway, for me it seems to make more sense just to call it the same as the official release and to make it possible to access the functions directly and not only via the search.

Ok, good to know that.:good:
I find it strange, too, what HTC decided here. But I guess we're lucky to have Pie at all on our device...^^

The recent Apps still showing vertically not horizon way
uncompleted update after all that time !!!!!

How's the battery life on Pie? I'm getting really great screen on time with Oreo, 5+hrs with medium usage, I'm not sure if it's worthwhile to update.

Any feedback for camera and battery life? I hope they're the same they were with Oreo!

Well, initial feedback for the camera and battery life:
Camera App looks the same and in my short test also behaved like I'm used to on Oreo. I didn't try all modes. But taking pictures in Auto and Pro mode works well and they look just as good as on Oreo.
Videos the same.
In addition I use GCam Pixel3 (stable version from Arnova) in difficult light situations which works as it did on Oreo.
It will take some more time to get significant numbers on battery life. But on my first discharge period right after the update I went from 100 % down to 0 % and got quite impressive results.:good:
See attached screenshots...
Note: I had Lacation, Bluetooth and NFC turned OFF, which is standard for my daily use.
I will keep you updated...

Overcharged - battery monitor

Hi guys,
I've released my first Android application on the market. It's a free battery monitor that notifies you when your phone is fully charged and gives you misc information. This is my way of saying thanks to all of the developers and ROM cookers here in this great website.
Hope you like it and please share suggestions to improve it
Change log:
- Customizable notifications
- Auto start at boot time
- Fixed full detection
- Fixed notification
If you like it, you can make a donation, just follow the link in my sign. It will keep me motivated to develop more applications based on what people need
Looks impressive, I was actually looking for something to display the percentage use rather than a green bar. Could this replace the conventional monitor on the right or must it remain an extra notification? The health I think is great too, well done!
Thanks for your input. Hum... I don't have a clue on how could I replace the conventional monitor on the right. If anyone has a clue on how to achieve this, or where can I look for this, please let me know.
Doesn't look possible sadly ... maybe a home screen widget would rock!
Nice application, competes with "Battery Indicator", they both essentially do the same thing but I think this looks more colourful for free.
My only issue is that the % doesn't display other than when it is charged. Fix that and make it skinable and I'm in! Maybe have it appear on the lock screen in a similair manner to the iPhone too .

Hum... on my device the % changes in realtime, whenever the battery decreases (discharging) or increases (charging). About skins... never thought about that. I was looking into getting battery history and estimate how much battery we have left in terms of time.
Updated to v4
What's new:
- Voice notification when full.
- Misc fixes.
Updated to v5
- Fixed force closes that happened when people don't have TTS on their devices.
- Battery and TTS objects are now independent of the interface, reduced the amount of code and optimized the framework.
- Only updates when the battery changes instead of timed checks of battery level, meaning much more battery efficient.
Updated to 5.7
Changes:
- Preview voice alert
- Configuration of Text-To-Speech settings from application
- Icons according to GUI guidelines
- Fixed the detection of full charge
- Uptime since boot of the phone (might change in the future for since charged)
Looks fantastic, nice work

I for one would prefer this ( or at least have it as an option ). This would be helpful since I switch the phone off at night.
Thanks.
seems nice! i'm going to try it. just two things i'd love to see:
a nice battery widget similar to "battery info" (with all extra data and maybe a quick enable/disable overclocked feature) and the ability to disable the status bar notification, at least when not charging, since i don't need it as it replicates the stuff i see in my battery widget.
if you add these two whings i'm going to donate for sure
I love it, one of the first apps i downloaded when i got the Desire.. Donating for sure.
Thanks guys, keep suggestions coming. I've changed the uptime to reflect every time we charge, by reseting the uptime variable to 0 when we plug it in.
I would like to see a battery widget geared for us using the after market high capacity batteries (Battery Left never seems to get it right). I would like the option to give the high and low mV values, and have the app base the percentage of the battery left using those 2 values.
Why we don't have the icon like on the screenshoot in the first post ?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
i have not installed/tried this yet, but i wanted to know, is there a setting, whereby a setting to set the fully charge percentage?
Li-lon battery should not 100% charged, right?
does this shut down after its done charging? Or does it use battery resources?

Feedback Thread: Tell Honor What You Want in Future Software Updates!
How is everyone enjoying their Honor 8? I was curious about what everyone wanted to see in future updates or maybe the next version of the phone.
Some things I'd like to see
Android 7.0
App Drawer
More Theme Options
Power plan scheduler as said by @Droiderr at http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/how-to/power-plan-scheduler-t3482030
App drawer,
Good reflective design aesthetics,
Better RAM Management without closing more recently used apps,
Default VoLTE support and support for all LTE bands in that region.
I would like to see android 7.0 for sure
And I know it may just be me but I would like the phone on just standard android not emui.
My only other gripe is ram management and the way it handles closing recent apps.
To use smart keys for home, back or app switch
1. Better screen calibration by default.
2. Double tap the screen to wake.
3. Extend the functionality of the smart key. Eg. -While the screen is on, tapping on the fingerprint will function as back key. This is usefull for app that use full screen such as browser.
-Tap and hold to turn off the screen. This is a feature that is available on meizu device which is very useful. No need to press, just tap and hold the fingerprint and boom the screen turn off.
4. Performance and smart powerplan shortcut on the shortcuts tab. Might as well add 720p(rog mode) toggle.
5. Better camera interface. The current interface seriously need some redesign! Why the hdr is seperated from auto mode? The pro/manual mode uses ring adjustments which is annoying. Why not a simpler like a straight horizontal line for focus, exposure time,wb,iso adjustment?
6. Fix the damn camera settings! Whenever I open up the pro mode, the auxiliary light always turned on. It doesnt save my setting! Same goes to the image adjustment.
1080p stabilization without losing so much quality of the video. It looks worse than a normal 720p video.. and ability to zoom in the videos with using all the 12mp sensor, not just 'software zoom'
7.0
Better ram management
Better notifications! Quick reply from notification shade, not just in heads up.
Lockscreen improvements, reply from lockscreen
Update themes from theme app. So I don't have to go download the updates themes and put them in theme folder
I would like to see Android 7.0.1 as soon as possible.
Need to be able to change the notification volume independently of the ring volume, just like on my old Galaxy S5. Notifications should be on the volume list with its own slider!
center clock mod.
ambient display and double tap to wake.

I agree with everyone! This is a great phone but EMUI 5.0 update needs to come soon!
Something that hasn't been mentioned is discarding of notifications on the lock screen, e.g. swipe to the right.

Yup. Need to access Notifications and Quick toggles in the notification bar from lock screen like the one in Moto.

Missing toggles in notification bar (Android 7.1.1)?

Hi y'all !
I just bought Nokia 6 last night and notice that there are some toggles missing in the notification bar which are available in my other phone running Android 7.0.
Such as the screenshot toggle, Volume toggle, sound profile toggle and so more, they are obviously not in the "Drag to add tiles". I hope Nokia didn't remove them.
Also, how i can make the battery percentage indicator appear next to the battery icon instead of inside the battery icon?
If you enabled System UI Tuner you can enable battery percentage.
To turn on Sytem UI Tuner, you need to press the little cog symbol in the corner of the toggle window until ut rotates. After that you find the system ui tuner menu in the bottom of the settings menu. And there under status bar you can enable battery percentage. As far as the other tiles are concerned, I don't know uf they are part of the rom.

By the way, the Gallery app is also missing from Nokia 6, Google photo is standard default photo viewing app now?

missing a lot of tiles bother me too, but there are apps out there that can add tiles, so it's not much a big problem.

the more i look at it, the more missing features i find. I just came across a review about this phone on YouTube, strangely enough there are some settings from the video are not available on my phone.

The missing settings i was talking about are at 3:03 and at 3:42 in the video.
Yup no Gallery app in this one. I don't like google fotos either, so I disabled it and installed Quick Pic instead. It's a good app.
Hello! Help with the decision, please!
I bought a Nokia 6 in China, the version was 7.0, and the function updated the update 7.1.1 and tried to install it via Recovery from the SD card, at the last stage received an error message. Now the phone is downloaded only in Recovery, and then the download is not. What can you recommend? How to restore the phone? What is the version of the firmware?
Well, adb sideload works on the phone. But I don't know any place to download Roms or OTA files.

the one in the video is the first release version (TA-1000, china exclusive i think). the launcher app is different from the Taiwan release version(TA-1003).
TA-1003's launcher app is a modified version of launcher3, while TA-1000's looks like it's called launcher+(at 3:08 in the video you linked.)

Android P in depth review (ongoing)

Android P in depth review (updating...)
Hi XDA, this is my opinion on the freshest dev preview of android P
Appearance
The appearance looks smoother and polished. The notifications have rounded corners and the Heads Up notifications appear like they are actually coming from the status bar instead of a rectangle taking up the screen. This is looking more and more similar to IOS, but android's customizability takes the lead. The new settings app looks a lot like the touchwiz settings because of the color coded icons. The clock has shifted to the left because P is made to support "notch" devices (i'll explain why Google is working hard for this feature later). The settings menu is organized more like touchwiz with the colored icons and that is a plus in my book. Overall, I believe this OS has achieved a greater standard when it comes to appearance.
New Features
Since this is only DP1, we are not seeing many new features, but I have seen the screenshot editor, different volume controls, the new settings app, etc. The screenshot editor is a much needed tool for me because I use social media and need to crop my screenshots, now this function can help me do just that. The volume defaults to media rather than ringer. The ring has 3 options, silent, vibrate, or ring. I believe this to be a better standard because I am always adjusting the media volume, but never the ring volume. This switch has kept the average consumer in mind. The new settings app has many battery tweaks! First off, there is a new power saving mode that doesn't tint your nav bar and status bar an ugly red color. This time, the battery saver works by limiting background power usage on applications and has a greater improvement on SOT. On DP2 at Google I/O, there will probably be more features to look for.
SOT/Battery life
The SOT has increased from 6 hrs on DU to 10 hrs on P. This is because P limits the background camera and microphone usage for apps such as Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The new battery saver feature can be turned on at any time and increases the SOT even more! I use the kirisakura harmony kernel for P and it is as good as the stock kernel, with better audio quality.
Tweaks, root, what else?
TWRP 3.2.1-2 works, but the password decryption is still faulty. It still registers what lock setting you're using. Magisk v16.1 has been released on the beta thread and magisk manager is bundled in (it is working and registering this time). Some magisk modules are not working because of P, but that should all be fixed in a few days. The only CK i've seen is Kirisakura harmony.
Overall...
Android P is a great OS for people that like new features and is relatively stable for a new OS. There are some api compatibility notifications, but that is because app devs haven't upgraded to the new api. I will be using this as my DD until official P comes out.
Thanks.

I don't know if anyone will agree with me but my battery life is the same or better as stock for me. I had a couple force closes in the first 5 minutes after my first boot but only 2 since then. Snapchat comes up with a toast message occasionally that says something like "API compatibility error" or something, but the app still works. It has a couple hang ups here and there. I honestly feel like it's DP2 or 3 material. Been running for 24 hours, just my experience though.

Also have been running for 24 hours and battery is on par with stock Oreo. Haven't had any issues with apps, I don't use many though. Bluetooth works but it still said I was connected to my head unit after I turned my car off and was in my house, toggle off and on fixed it. Bluetooth icon doesn't show unless it's connected but it seems to be by design. Seems very stable for a dp1 but I think I might flash back to Oreo if root isn't available soon.

Well you can hate it but iOS is far ahead of android when it comes to the UI.
I personally like the new UI on P.
Bugs so far (fresh image install, 100% unmodified non-rooted) in my few hours of testing. Keep in mind that I paid attention to every little detail:
1. Phone didn't want to wake one time to the point where I thought the phone was off. It took maybe 10-15 seconds of fiddling with the power button to wake it.
- This alone makes me think that an alarm clock could be missed.
2. Randomly goes from silent to ring.
- May be dangerous for some people depending on situation (business meetings, school setting, sleeping).
3. Launcher settings can be seen through the app drawer background.
- Tacky cosmetic mistake.
4. Adaptive brightness appears broken.
I'm sure there are more that I haven't encountered as it was only for a couple of hours. I wouldn't run it as a daily driver if you rely on your phone for things like business, alarm clock, maps, etc.
It's pretty functional for an alpha release but I wouldn't call this stable enough for everyday use unless you're comfortable with the possibility of the phone switching to ring randomly, missing an alarm clock for an important event, or phone not waking to capture a life moment (picture/video).

That's weird I didn't have any of these issues except for the launcher settings icons displaying over the app drawer.
I did however encounter some minor problems:
On the settings icon shortcuts, when I click on "Data usage" I get an error saying "app not installed"
I cannot get the new screenshots editor, when I click on edit right after taking a screenshot it takes mo to the Google photos editor
I have noticed errors related to API compatibility showing on certain apps
Some apps don't seem to work correctly, GSam Battery Monitor for example is showing wrong stats (SOT jumped from 3 to 4h in a couple of minutes)
Other than that everything seems to work in a good and smooth way.
Words with Friends kept FCing
Pros:
1. Beautiful UI
2. Battery life is great (no orange bar for battery saving mode)
3. Notification management! P recognizes the types of notifications you want/ or don't want and gives you a quick option to disable them.
4. No FCs so far (might just be me)
Cons:
1. Launcher settings can be seen through app drawer (dev preview ****)
2. Settings icons are hideous
3. Media volume setting comes up by default when pressing the volume button. (might just be me)
I love so much about P. I can't wait for until it's out of dev preview.

I think I read that now volume keys always default to media volume rather than ring volume. Check one of the feature list posts in xda news to verify.
Review updated, includes more stuff
I've been running Android P for about 3 days now my Pixel XL. I haven't had many issues at all, but my battery seems to drain/die much fast than it did on 8.1.
I may try to re flash P again to see if a fresh install helps in anyway. Especially since everyone seems to be getting much better battery life with P.
I'll update if I see any difference.
So you are getting 10 hours of SoT with this P preview? Seems unreal man!

I'm also getting worse battery life on P, although I did just update from 8.1 with the factory image without wiping. I might just give it a try after wiping but I'd really rather not. I'm using a normal Pixel, non-XL.

Nope that doesn't work. FRP bug in the build. Why do you want screenshots? It is the same UI as Oreo for the most part.

Only thing that turns dark is the pulldown and it doesn't change anything else, not even the apps which support dark mode. You still ha have to manually change those.
For people that want Digitallwellbeing in stock Pie. I can give you the insctruction to get it to work.
1. Sideload Digitalwellbeing apk
2. Go to quick settings and add: Grayscale
3. Long press Grayscale and follow instructions.
4. Give the right permissions.
5. Press the upper left back-button until you get to the main Digitalwellbeing menu.
6. Scroll down and select option: Show icon in the app list.
Sadly the grayscale doesn't seem to work and Wind down doesn't seem to do antything aswell. BUt now you can atleast see how your phone usage ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Add Charging sound
When in QC MODE it doesn't show rapidly
charging
,but it still have quick charging
PD still show rapidly charging
Is it true that they have pulled the update ?
