Google Contacts Sync Never Completes - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

For a few days now--about three or four--my contacts have refused to sync. I did all the "stand on one head and wait for the full moon" "fixes"--e.g., disable auto-updates, clear data, reboot, clear all caches via twrp--without success. I've also tried Beans and OpenGapps, as well as complete wipes and AEX, DU, and Omni. I've scoured the web for "Google Contacts sync issues" and every variation, but nothing helped.
Thus, I am here.
HELP!?

Try to flash Pixel experience and see if your contacts synced (pixel experience doesn't require gapps, it already includes

Any chance there's another option other than this "nuclear" one; i.e., I'm not really looking to wipe everything again...
Never mind; I bit the bullet and installed PE... contacts sync fine. I'm really not a fan of PE, though, so I'm gonna try using GTR's gapps and pray.

Okay, for any weary traveler who wanders upon this thread, I'll share what I've had to do to get Google Contacts to sync and the steps I took in my journey.
Some basics:
Before flashing any rom I completely wiped--i.e., factory reset, format data, format d-cache/data/system/cache/internal storage--so I could start from scratch.
I used the most recent Beans Gapps (June 2018), Ground Zero Gapps (20180313), and OpenGapps (at the time, 20180810).
I tried every version of OpenGapps; that is, Aroma, Super, Stock, Full, Mini, Micro, Nano, and Pico.
I flashed the latest versions of AEX, AICP, DU, Omni, RR, and Validus.
The only roms which allowed my contacts to sync were RR (with Aroma OpenGapps) and PE, which (of course) needs no gapps flashing.
So...
UPDATE
For the ongoing saga... AEX with Aroma now syncs; however, DU and Omni do not. Through conversations via different tg channels, I believe this may be a Lineage base issue. It appears all directly AOSP-based roms work correctly, but LOS-based do not. I have no idea why that would even matter, but meh.

PA Gapps package FC's acore

AS in the title.
Any GAPPS package I flash on the latest PA crashes the acore service (which is the Play Services, right?).
Apps like Hangouts and G+ I think are the culprit, but even removing those doesn't help. Previously, on vanilla, neither of them would work, so I figured I'd branch out to AOSP to see if this helps, plus, it's nice to use. But no :/
I get this when I dirty flash. If you clear app data and cache for Contacts and Contacts Storage, then reboot, the problem should go away.
I'd come from a complete wipe (moved the zips to a usb stick and installed from a USB-OTG cable)... Everything was gone /system /data. you name it.
Ended up installing AOKP MR1 and the gapps package from march. Works great now.

Google Play Services and Google Play Store issues

Anyone on AOSP based ROMs had issues with Google Play Services and Google Play Store FCing or not downloading? Ive cleared data on boot, rebooted, tried multiple GApp packages, Formatted data, wiped data, re- downloaded ROM and GApps, retried everything, disabled and re-enabled permissions etc etc etc.
Anyways, anyone come across this and get it to eventually work. I'm testing a ROM and cant get it to work no matter how I try.
Its AOSP based 7.1.1, GApps ARM64 January through today Pico thru Stock (Tried a lot all day along).
Its only your phone or Rom's bug ?
What rom you are on .?

I've seen it on some other Lineage ROMs on here and various devices, but everything I've as a fix seen I tried with no success.
Its a test build ROM for AOKP H918. Was hoping to try a few things that others have tried on other AOSP ROM's (RR, CM14, L.OS, etc) that might not have been posted.

"Google Play services has stopped" on 3 different 7.1.1. ROMs (RR, AICP, Lin.)

Hey guys,
coming from a stock 5.0.2 I wanted to install Lineage Nougat. So first I installed TWRP 3.x and then Lineage and gApps.
After the installation I rebooted into the system and the setup wizard started (albeit this also has been crashing sometimes on all 3 roms), letting me go as far as the Google account login, "Checking info..." which crashed with the message "Google Play services has stopped". I can go through the wizard without doing anything, but it's the same in the system.
Can't open Play Store, can't add Google Account.
I've tried 3 roms, Resurrection Remix, Lineage, and AICP. All Android 7.1.1.
I've tried different builds, different builds for gApps, different versions (nano, micro, stock).
Tried the usual clear cache etc. stuff for Google Play that you find online. Tried installing a new Play Services apk from apkmirror.
Nothing works, it's the same thing every time. Recovery, Wipe, Install Rom+gApps, Reboot, Play Services crash.
It doesn't seem to have to do with the ROMs.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
So I found something while looking for answers that seems to be my problem, but I don't really understand what this person did.

Somehow, after many hours spread over the last week, last night I seem to have fixed it.
I had suspected that it was an issue with a corrupt partition, (or permissions, or something!) on the internal storage, as it was only when I tried to download something that the browser crashed, and Play Store would generally only start crashing after a first time browsing with it. Also sometimes from within Recovery I wouldn't be able to wipe data properly (it would complete almost instantly, sometimes not removing a previous ROM...). Sometimes it did seem to work properly though.
I can't pin down exactly what I did that fixed it though. I tried 2 things at once: I manually wiped each of /system, /cache, etc through fastboot in the bootloader, and I also (from adb in recovery) manually did mkdir /data and mkdir /data/media

Can someone help me with this, what exactly did he do? When I go adb reboot-bootloader the phone restarts normally, I'm not going into a fastboot mode. And mkdir says the directory already exists.
Stupid question, are you using TWRP 3.1.0-1 by BlastGator? I remember reading something about the recovery being associated with this issue, I just don't remember where.

YES!
But I think I tried it with 2.8.xx as well, but I'll try again just in case.
Edit: So I tried it, to no avail.
Boot to Rec, Flash TWRP 2.8, Reboot, Wipe, Flash RR and Gapps, Reboot, Google Play Stopped.
Am I missing a step or anything I should try different?
I installed TWRP and root with SRK Tool 2.1, maybe there's something wrong there?
I have exactly same problem with you. I've tried many flashing methods and it went fail and fail again. Please tell me if your problem have been solved. Anyway I'm at CloudyG2 3.3 right now and using TWRP blastgator 3.1.0-1.

When I open the camera app I can see for almost 2-4 seconds then my phone reboot.
How can I fix this?
Thanks.

Here's the safest longest and most trusted method that worked for me. If you have the patience, backup the software, factory reset, clear data cache, download latest nightly and "STOCK GAPPS 7.1" (not pico Gapps) from "Open Gapps" . Now first flash the rom, then the Gapps, you should now have pixel like experience with google camera app which is bugless and reliable. So are most other apps like Google contacts, Google phone. Only downside: stock Gapps is around 800+mb.
I tried a clean flash like you said with stock Gapps and I still have the same problem.

Stuck on 'Just a sec....'

Been trying to flash Android 9 based ROMs to my SM-N900V, always the same result. Tried lineage official, unofficial, as well as a couple others. I have latest TWRP for hltemo. I wipe everything but microSD, format data. Flash ROM, wipe Dalvik, flash gapps, wipe Dalvik then rebooting. Is there some other formatting I should be doing? Am I missing something?
Just tried latest lineage build, latest gapps, no difference. Still stuck on "Just a sec...." I guess I must be the only one with this problem? Thankfully not my primary phone any more.
Someone over on Reddit suggested removing /data/system/app-ops.XML, apparently that worked for them. Not me though ?

you have to be in a proper internet connection(or none at all, both works) during setup since it will prompt you to login with your google account
though alternatively, you can use different gapps packages like bitgapps where it doesnt have the setup wizard included(its optional if you need to backup contacts/messages through google) to bypass those, or find the setup wizard apk from /system/app or /system/priv-app and delete it yourself

Tried deleting the lineage setup wizard (actually I just renamed it). Tried flashing just the ROM with no gapps, that results in a blank screen with only volume buttons / reboot power off available.
Gave up, found an unofficial lineage 17.1 (!) for Note 3 & flashed it. Finally passed "Just a sec...."!!

lineage setup wizard is different to google's, los has their own setup wizard(including los-based roms like crdroid and ressurectionremix), so its likely to break if you remove it, whereas aosp-based roms(e.g. havoc and others) relies on google's own setup wizard
