Switching to the dark theme doesn't help your battery life, since the g6 has an lcd screen, and not an amoled screen. You may notice a slight improvement in battery life if you use a white theme on an lcd display, but it's so marginal that you probably won't even notice it. Just choose the theme you like.

Idea: improve battery life with more blacks

Nexus uses AMOLED display where every pixel produces its own brightness. As far as i know, every black pixel is technically an off pixel. So if we used a black-heavy theme, it may significantly reduce display's battery draw. And since display is a major juice sucker, this may improve battery life.
What do you think?
The added contrast certainly would help the display be more visible during the daylight, too. We all know how artists love those bright white and gray gradients that have earned Apple so many UI design awards, but I'd much prefer to extend the lifetime of this gorgeous display as much as possible.
I always have a black wallpaper in order to save as much battery as possible.

Nothing to think, you're right, and personally my theme is close to black.

I'd kill for a flying toaster live wallpaper. Brings back memories.

Thanks for spreading the word, but most of the tech people here were already aware of this.
Another tip: I have Beautiful Widgets' brightness widget on my homescreen (so it only takes 1x1 icon) and tap it often so it goes to near darkness (11%) when I'm going to use it for a while (indoors). Saves quite a bit of battery.
Pretty dumb idea in my opinion.
33 hours, 30% battery left, factory battery, on froyo. If you want better battery life, a black wallpaper isn't going to help.

wow, real mature
anyway, if infact true black color on the nexus ones screen is the off position then it will save battery. The only thing is, is that it must be 100% true black, dark colors wont do because they still require the same power as many other colors. It has to be true #000000

yes yes I've noticed that when I've used the default wallpaper which is fully black with the four colored "X"
I thought this was common knowledge. I use black everywhere I possibly can.

Thank you, good sir!

Brightness at lowest level is still really bright?

I tried setting my Vibrant to the lowest possible brightness level (with auto brightness disabled, of course). It still seems very bright to me compared to the lowest level on every other phone I've used. I realize this phone has a nice screen, etc. but is there no way to make it dimmer in situations where you just don't need that bright of a display and want to save battery?
Edit: I want to clarify, I love the screen's brightness, I'm just mainly asking for battery saving purposes.
I was running a black bg for a while. It would seem to be your best option for both issues. It was said in another thread that black uses the least amount of battery.
Vibe the XDApp
You can get tinted screen protector....The bright vibrant screen is the best thing on this phone.

Yeah, that's not my complaint. No doubt this screen is awesome
What I mean is that I'd actually like to increase battery life further by going even dimmer, if possible.
Then a black background is a good idea, black pixels literally use no battery on an AMOLED screen because the pixels aren't on when they're black, so it's a true black. That's the wonderful thing about these screens, and why the contrast ratio is so ridiculously high. Also why the Kindle app has the color reversal option, making the background black and the text white, and a lot of the UI uses black in places I've seen stock android white or gray. I read a couple chapters of Sherlock Holmes the other day and my battery went down 2%. Awesome screen.
Also the web browser has a separate brightness setting.

**slow reader..jk
maybe one of the genius phone gods could post a mod for a supper dim night mode. hint/nudge :burning eyes:
I would have to agree even on low the brightness of the screen is very high. I didn't realize this until today my friend wouldn't believe me I had brightness on low (his Droid's screen looked like crap compared to mine ).
Thanks for the tip on the black background... I really do need to find out ways to improve battery life on this thing.
I made a similar thread a while ago. For me it's too bright in low light situations. I'd love to see a way to lower the lowest setting.
+1, i'd like to see to an option to go even dimmer.

Same here. The browser is downright blinding in low-light.
Hey I'm not the only one who thinks the phone should have much lower brightness settings. I think I've seen it dim lower than the lowest brightness, but only on auto mode and only for a short time. Or maybe not. But I'm sure it can go lower because it would be weird if it couldn't. I also much rather have dimmer colors than a black vacuous screen for battery savings.
It does go lower. Put the brightness on manual and set it to lowest possible then wait for it to timeout and go to sleep. 5 secs before it goes to sleep the screen goes dimmer. On the G1 the lowest setting was this pre-sleep brightness. On the Vibrant we can't get that level as an option. Fingers crossed a non-samsung rom like CM6 will fix this.

Good observation. Indeed hopefully its fixed in a custom ROM or even by samsung themselves (though i'm not holding my breath on that one).
Alarm Clock Plus
The "dim mode" in Alarm Clock Plus is really dim. It would be nice to have a setting that would allow me to drop the brightness down that much.
yeah, because even on low MY EYES, They BURRRN!
lol
seriously
+1 for supporting this thread!
+1 for lower brightness option.
+1 from me too. This thing lights that whole dang room when my wife is trying to sleep.
Sorry it took so long to reply to this thread. I had to go find my sunglasses.... Seriously though, I read in bed at night and yeah its way too bright.

Save battery with reduced screen size?

Hi!
Does anybody know, if you can actually save energy and battery by using the reduce screen size feature?
I guess u mean to say by adjusting DPI ? Or resolution ? AFAIK no matter what DPI u use the screen is gonna illuminate the same amount of pixels .. U can get better battery life with regards to screen by two ways
1. Black wallpaper/Black themes
2. "Pixel battery saver" an app which works good on amoled displays .
I personally turn off auto brightness , keep it at 50% and use pixel battery saver . I really have a difference of 30 mins to 1 hr of extra battery . cheers

Are you talking about where you swipe from the middle edge to the middle and back, and the whole screen shrinks down? This does cover a large portion of the screen in black, efficetively turning it off, and might also reduce the resolution being put out by the GPU, so definitely a potential for battery savings. Who wants to keep their screen size reduced for a few days to test?
^ Yep, thats exactly what I mean! Any experiences? Theoretically it should have an positive effect, don't you think?
I didn't notice it myself over a short period of time though, I have to admit.

I think theoretically it should work, as it uses an OLED display and more of the screen would be blacked out.
However I'm not sure if anyone who buys a Note 4 would use this mode long enough for it to gain a advantage out of it.
Still sure it would be nice to see some statistics. ^^
Kind regards, Stefan.
I believe to observe an effect, if I watch a YouTube video in small instead of full size.

Why does the Note 4 have better battery life than V20?

I used to have the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I know how well it worked and the awesome battery life. Now we have a phone with a newer CPU, same screen resolution, almost the same battery size, and latest OS but still it doesn't even come close to battery performance. That is head scratching. I have to resort to fat battery packs just to get the same real world battery use. Why LG? What's the excuse?
I'm also coming from the Note 4, I had the phone for over a year and a half. I owned multiple batteries (the beauty of removable batteries), and over time they started to drain very quickly. I think the V20 battery is much better than the Note 4 battery, why not try getting an extra battery if one isn't doing the job for you?
are you on a custom rom?

Well. You are disregarding a very important fact that has a huge impact on battery life. And that is the type of screen technology. Usually phones which use amoled screens have a higher expectancy to drain the battery at a slower rate thanks to the technology allowing them to light up individual pixels only when it's required. On the other hand, the v20 has ips screen which lights up the whole panel regardless of if it is needed or not. But to be honest, both types have pros and cons . One just have to put In a balance what are the most important features and capabilities you want on your phone and decide from there. If you like battery lasting way longer, then go for the note or S series. But you will have to live with the consequences too. For the ips screens, the battery tends to be one of the consequences and the sacrifice of pure black or white white many people claim. However, for me, those 2 things are worthy to be sacrificed for a phone which to be honest is pretty much the only one that has been released on 2016 with removable battery, infra red, tough body, sd card slot, easy fixable, unlocked bootloader, and at least to me, fast, reliable, and fully featured. (some of the recent phones might have some of this features but not all of then together)

No. I did play around with it before but from my experience custom rom battery life is never on par with stock. Most of the time it's worse.
Amoled has better contrast specifically when it comes to blacks, can turn off sections of its screens that produce black which can save battery.
IPS has sharper display, does a better job at producing whites but can't shut off portions of its screen.
Neither is really better than the other, it just depends on which screen you prefer.
Since I like thickening my phone with a battery pack (the thinnest is ridiculous these days I'd rather have a longer lasting battery)
Coming from a Note 3 to the v10 I much preferred the v10 display it's noticeably sharper close up.

Black wallpaper / battery

Given the type of screen the essential phone has, will an all black wallpaper save battery? If not, on this screen does the type of wallpaper impact battery life at all?
given you have the same SOT and everything else is the same you will probably see a small improvement in battery live I believe. It will likely make almost no difference if all other factors that affect battery live are included. I'd say enjoy the screen in all its beauty with wallpapers you like - colorful or not.

It does not have an OLED screen so battery life is unaffected by wallpaper.
Don't use "live" wall paper..
