S5 (SM-G901F) boot loop - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I'm experiencing a weird problem with my Galaxy S5 (SM-G901F, kccat6).
The device is boot looping in the "Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by android" screen.
When I turn it on it is about 7 seconds in this screen, turns off, vibrates and turns back on again and continues to loops in this state.
I've already tried flashing the stock rom (odin says pass, went to stock recovery and did a "factory reset"), installed TWRP and reformatted the partitions and tried to install LineageOS (device reboots in the flashing process). I'm not able to flash LineageOS, TWRP gives me sometimes the error "Failed to mount /system (Invalid argument)", I've tried mounting the partition with the "mount" option in TWRP and that seems to work but I get the same problem again.
I've copied the TWRP log file from /tmp/recovery.log: https://pastebin.com/7FX6TtEe
From what I can see the issue seems to be that /system is "Mount_Read_Only", althought I didn't say "keep system read-only" on the first start of TWRP. I've already tried reflashing TWRP a few times.
I'd grateful for any help

The only thing I can suggest is flashing the firmware & include the pit file

Thanks for the answer.
It helped me a bit. When I flash the stock firmware and pit file with odin the device boots up to the "SAMSUNG" screen (blue notification LED and pulsing samsung logo) but then hangs there and doesn't continue. After a while it resets and boots up to this stage and continues to boot loop.
When I enter the stock recovery and perform a "factory reset" and try to boot up the device it's back to the previous stage where it loops in the "Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by android" screen.
Any ideas?

Did you select reparation with pit file?
Make sure it's the correct pit file else you could hard brick the device

I'm using a SM-G901F DBT (germany), so I got the latest DBT firmware from sammobile: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G901F/DBT/
and the right pit file from sammobile: https://www.sammobile.com/forum/threads/30119-galaxy-S5-G900-and-variants-pit-files
my Odin settings: https://imgur.com/a/TfQ9p52
After flashing I get stuck on the "SAMSUNG" screen when booting the device up, when I pull out the battery, boot to the stock recovery and perform a "factory reset" as many people recommend and reboot, it returns to the inital state where it's looping in the "Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by android" screen.
Thanks for helping me

Try with this pit file - it works for the German ee varient so could work for you

I've tried it with this pit file, but the device just keeps power cycling in the "Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by android" screen. It doesn't even reach the "SAMSUNG" screen. With the pit file from sammobile it does reach the "SAMSUNG" screen but gets stuck then. :/

Try something a bit different - the pit files available may only work with older versions of Android for that device
Try this firmware (if you don't have a premium account Google it - I'm sure you can find it somewhere)
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G901F/BAL/download/G901FXXU1BOC4/45987/
With this pit
https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3795955&d=1467017826
If it works you can try flashing the correct firmware without the pit
It's probably just a case of trying different things out

I don't have a sammobile premium membership so I got the firmware from: https://simunlockremote.com/galaxy-s-series-firmware/ (G901FXXU1BOC4_G901FBAL1BOC1_BAL).
When I try to flash the firmware with the pit file you recommended me I get the error "SECURE CHECK FAIL : PIT" on my device in the download mode and Odin says fail.
Currently I'm downloading the german version of the 5.0.2 firmware (G901FXXU1BPA2) and I'll try that with the the pit file from sammobile. The download will take quite a while because it's heavily throttled.

After endless hours of fiddling around with various firmwares I have it working now.
I've used:
- firmware: DTM Germany 4.4.4 (PDA: G901FXXU1ANI5 CSC: G901FDTM1AOA1)
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G901F/DTM/download/G901FXXU1ANI5/44676/
- pit: SM-G901F DTM (KCCAT6_EUR_OPEN_HIDDEN200M.pit)
https://www.sammobile.com/forum/threads/30119-galaxy-S5-G900-and-variants-pit-files
It boots up into android 4.4.4. But when I perform a firmware upgrade with Samsung Kies to 6.0.1 it goes goes back to boot looping. When I try to flash LineageOS or restore a backup in TWRP the device reboots itself while installing in TWRP and starts to boot loop again.

swap a new battery in. eliminate the easiest causes first.

You could be right. I've tried running Antutu Benchmark on the device while it's on battery. It basically crashes instant and the phone reboots. I've tried it while the device is plugged into an outlet with the standard charger and it doesn't crash/randomly reboot.
Never thought somethink like that could cause that, but you've potentially proved me wrong
I'm going to order a replacement battery. Thanks!

I'm completly lost right now.
I bought a new battery but that doesn't seem to solve my problem.
I can flash the 4.4 DTM with PIT and the device boots up. It's super slow and lags, but for the most part it works.
With boot loop I mean the device is stuck in the "Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by android" screen and reboots after some time and gets stuck there again.
Kies: upgrade 4.4 to 6.0.1 => boot loop
Odin: flash 4.4, boot up, flash 6.0.1 => boot loop
Odin: flash 4.4, boot up, flash 6.0.1, flash TWRP, install LOS from TWRP (twrp-3.2.3-0-kccat6) => device restarts while flashing or boot loop
Odin: flash 4.4, boot up, flash 6.0.1 bootloader and modem, flash TWRP, install LOS from TWRP => boot loop
At some point I somehow got it to boot up into LOS 15.1 but in the setup process everything crashed and the device wasn't usable at all. After that the device rebooted itself and got stuck in the LOS boot animation. Another time a achived the same, but after it rebooted itself it got stuck in the "Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by android" screen again.
I appreciate any help thanks

You can try formatting every partition in twrp
Goto wipe
Advance wipe
Format the following
System - data - cache - art/delvik cache - internal storage
Go back & select wipe again but choose option on right hand side (not advanced wipe)
Reboot to recovery
Install from sd card or re-copy rom zips etc back to internal storage
With Linageos are you flashing gapps too?
For lineageos 15.1 use mind the gapps (arm)

I followed your instructions but I'm still stuck. Before I've only installed LOS 15.1, without gapps and nothing else. I've also tried it with the gapps you recommended but that also doesn't work.
I've discovered something weird: I followed this guide to extract the modem and bootloader from the stock firmware: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70452245&postcount=2
4.4 bootloader + modem (DTM): I can flash LOS in TWRP without a problem (but doesn't boot up, boot loop)
6.0.1 bootloader + modem (DTM): TWRP reboots while flashing
6.0.1 bootloader + modem (DBT): TWRP reboots while flashing
From what I understand from the install instruction for LOS 15.1, the newer bootloader CQJ1 from the original 6.0.1 firmware is required.

Unfortunately I'm not able to do a OTA update. The device downloads an update to android 5, reboots, boots to recovery mode, installs the update, reboots and starts boot looping in the "Samsung Galaxy S5 powered by android" screen. After watching that for about 10 minutes I pull out the battery and try to boot to the stock recovery mode. The device then shows the screen "installing system update 25%". It never goes over 25%. At some point the device reboots itself and continues to boot loop. :\

[FIX?] Stuck on bootloop

Hi all,
I have a UK N910F 32GB Snapdragon Note 4, with a custom Lollipop rom that I've been using with no problems for a few months (http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/snapdragon-dev/rom-bob4-devbase-multi-csc-safe-bloat-t3033881). Yesterday the weirdness began - my Note 4 froze randomly in normal use and rebooted. It was then fine for around 5 hours, then froze again, and when it restarted it would continue to freeze on start-up. At that stage I could still boot into recovery (Clockwork Manager custom recovery), so I tried clearing cache and dalvik, which changed nothing. But now I am unable to do even that - it just gets stuck in bootloop and won't even go into recovery.
When I turn it on, it will stay on the Samsung splashscreen for 10 seconds, then reboot and vibrate twice, then go back onto splashscreen, reboots, etc. I need to remove the battery to stop this. The only thing I am able to do is boot into download mode, where the phone works with Odin fine, and I am able to flash successfully with Odin.
So far I have tried reflashing a stock UK 5.0.1 ROM - it initially gave me the ext4 error but I then got the N910F pit file and repartitioned - Odin flashing completed fine, then still got stuck on splashscreen with "Recovery booting...."). I have also tried to flash CWM and TWRP, which both flash fine, but then the phone still won't boot into recovery - I get:
#1 Battery in
#2 power on
#3 vibrate
#4 screen on RECOVERY BOOTING
Recovery is NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
Set Warranty Bit : recovery
and doesn't boot into recovery. I'm pretty sure I'm using the correct TWRP and CWM versions.
I've spent all day trawling XDA and the wider web with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I'm hoping it is a softbrick but cannot work out how to get it back. I don't care about losing any data at this stage, just keen to bring my Note 4 back to life!
TL;DR: phone will stay on bootloop when powered on - not caused by failed software install, just started happening randomly. Cannot boot into recovery. Download mode works and can flash with Odin, but all attempted flashes so far haven't helped even when Odin succeeds in flashing.

Have you tried flashing your variants cf-root file with auto reboot unchecked, let it Pass, remove USB abd battery, wait 30 seconds and reboot? Sounds weird.. i know, but for a while that put many users on 5.0.1 softbricks back to their previous working ROM.
I've just done that, it flashed successfully, I took battery and cable out and then rebooted after 30 seconds - it is now booting onto Samsung bootscreen, says:
RECOVERY BOOTING
Recovery is NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
Set Warranty Bit : recovery
Then reboots itself, same thing happens, reboots itself - back to a bootloop, but with the above written.
What's the fix for the above? Does it mean the recovery installed is wrong for the Android Rom version I have?
Thanks for your help so far, much appreciated.

If you can still boot into the download mode and want to boot into the system as normal, using Samsung's Smart Switch tool will work. Search Google for "Samsung Smart Switch" no quotes, install the program then after finished installing, in the application, click MORE at the Smart Switch window, then click Emergency software recovery and initialization, then follow on-screen steps.

Just tried that, same issue. When it boots after installation, it says "Recovery booting..." in top left corner, then goes into bootloop. Thanks for the tip though.
Any other ideas out on the grapevine? Or is it time for a return?
I'm having the same issue. Tried stock ANK4, BOB4 and BOC3. Only bootloops and can't reach recovery mode.
Than I tried TWRP 2.8.7.0 and "philz_touch_6.59.0-trlte" but they don't work either.
Don't know what to do now. Never had this issue before on any Samsung device
EDIT: Tried Samsung Smart Switch and it dowloaded PDA: OC3 / CSC: OB6 / PHONE: OC3 (DTM). But my Note bootloops furthermore
Saw 2 other guys with the same Problem and no solution here.
And I found this. This could be the same issue we are facing:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030
Hope there is a dev that can make this for our 910F
Hi all
This is now also happening to me...
Have Odind back to stock and it works for about 4 hours,
Then issue starts...
Reboots randomly
Then reboots to blank screen... No recovery

Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F No Recovery Mode always restart Brick

Hello,
I´ve got a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S5
The History:
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900f from Ebay with a Software Problem. The seller said, he try to flash a Custom Room like Cyanogenmod, he don´t know which)
The flash failed (i don´t know why). Now the S5 have a brick.
I tried so much, but i can´t repair it, pls help me.
The Problem is:
I can not start the Recovery Menü to flash a new Custom room. Always i tried to start the Menü, there is just a text "recovery Booting", then the phone restarts after round about 10 sec.
So even if i tried to start the S5 normally without recovery Menü, it´s just the Samsung Galaxy S5 Logo power by Android, then the phone restarts all the time.
The only thing i can do is start the download mode.
Things i tried:
- Firmware installation about Kies (pass, but still the Same Problem)
-Firmware Installation about Odin (pass, but still the same Problem)
- CF-Autoroot flashing (pass) then i tried to flash a recovery like PhilZ but then when i tried to open the recovery it`s "Recovery is not seandroid enforcing" Set Warranty bit
I tried so many firmwares but still the same Problem. Now it is installed Lollipop 5.0 G900FXXU1BOI3_G900FDBT1BOI1_G900FXXU1BOI3_HOME
There is no chance to repair it over ADB oder Fastboot, cause USB-debugging is disabled
Maybe you can help me and help me to stop spend all my time for this phone, cause im interested to know how i can repair it.

.
I tried to install twrp 2.7.0.0-klte with odin. It´s pass, but when i tried to boot into Recovery he said "recovery is not seandroid enforce" Set Warranty bit: recovery
Pls help me i´ve got no idea more
Try this hold on (power volume up and home) then do not release until recovery mode boot

With some of the newer LP based firmwares, twrp 2.8.7.0 klte is the only version that works.....
Other than that, you might find it necessary to odin back to KitKat (flashing a pit file too) and try 'towelrooting' your device.......
BE WARNED.......If you *do* flash a pit file, make sure it's the CORRECT pit for your device.....In some cases, flashing the wrong pit will permanently kill a device.
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
So i had try it.
1.)hold on ( volume up and home) then do not release until recovery mode boot
--> The phone always restart no recovery is possible
2.) I try to install on LP the TWRP 2.8.7.0 Still the Same error "recovery is not seandroid enforce" Set Warranty bit: recovery
Before i root the device with CF-Autoroot and it´s pass
3.) I downgrade to 4.4.2 with a full package of Firmware with CSC,BL,AP,CP and a pit file.
The downgrade pass, when the phone starts it says recovery booting in blue script, then the phone restarts. I can´t intstall towelroot, cause the system is not booting, so i´d tried to install CF-Autoroot (pass) and then also the TWRP 2.7.0.0 pass but not booting and then 2.8.0.0.
But still the same "recovery is not seandroid enforce" Set Warranty bit: recovery
If you got a pass on your KK flash, you have a stock recovery......
Have you tried booting into that recovery and wiping cache and factory resetting? It is necessary to do this when downgrading......
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
Yes it was a KK stock recovery.
I tried to boot in this recovery, but when the phone starts it says recovery booting in blue script, then the phone restarts after a few seconds.
It´s not possible to wipe cache or make a factory reset, cause the recovery is not booting. That´s my problem. Also when i have flash the stock firmware i tried to go into the recovery but when the phone starts it says recovery booting in blue script, then the phone restarts after a few seconds. ( 4.4.2 and 5.0)
I´can´t flash a custom rom cause the recovery is not booting. I´ve no idea
Are you attempting the 3 button combination from powered off to get into recovery?........
@'detection' does the OP's situation sound familiar?.....
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
Very familiar -
https://dl.twrp.me/klte/
Flash TWRP 2.8.7.0 .TAR (Do not unzip) with ODIN 3.10.7 - in Download mode (Volume Down & Home & Power)
It will say "recovery is not seandroid enforce" Set Warranty bit" at the top when you boot into recovery, give it a few seconds and you should see the TWRP blue splash screen, and then recovery should load up
Then flash a custom ROM from TWRP
--
If that all still fails, try flashing the PIT file for the G900F along with a Stock ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2721101&d=1399024091
Extract this one so it is .PIT, and add it to ODINs PIT section
If that still fails, try flashing just the PIT file with ODIN, and then the TWRP 2.8.7.0 with ODIN and see if you can get in that way
Or PIT and TWRP together
Try a combination until you get back in
Also try different versions of TWRP from 3.07 up to 3.10.7

It sounds familiar because it's happened to many other people recently too, although TWRP usually fixes it
Follow my instructions above
No chance guys,
i´d tried to install all TWRP which i found once in 5.0 and also i tried to install on 4.4.2. But always the same mistake. (recovery is not se.....)
Now i´ve tried to install CWM-Recovery and now there is no mistake like upside. Now in blue "recovery booting" and in yellow set warranty bit: recovery
But the recovery is not booting, the phone always make a restart. I´d also tried to install the recovery without auto-reboot in odin. But no help.
I don´t understand, cause when i flash a Stock Firmware, the recovery menu ,in my opinion, it have to start, but it doesn´t. Maybe i have anexpensive paper weight now
I search the internet to install a Custom room over Odin, but i don´t find any results, so i think it is not possible.
Do you have more ideas? Pls help. Thanks
I have the exact same problem, some are calling it the Black Screen of Death (with the blue led flicker). This is what happened to me:
0) had TWRP + latest 12.1 Cyanogenmod
1) installed the alpha 13 Cyanogenmod, which worked, more-or-less...
2) lost access to TWRP recovery, did not lose access to download
3) tried every single type of black magic from XDA (Kies, pit files, bootloader files, etc)
4) now it turns on, the LED turns blue and slowly, slowly flickers, but the screen is blank. At some point it plays the Samsung boot sound
Any help will be enormously appreciated.

Ithink you should try re instal original firmware using odin and get ur warranty back then fix it on samsung
I found a trick that seems to help slightly, until an actual solution is published. During a misbehave episode, assuming that something shows up (which is not always the case):
1) press <power + home + vol-down> until the download thing shows up
2) press <up-arrow> so that it actually gets into download mode
3) press <power> until the screen turns off and immediately release (otherwise it will try to reboot); this makes it stay off
4) let it "rest" for a certain period of time (could be 5 minutes or more)
5) back to normal
Did u root your device vai CF auto root? Did it work?

Galaxy s5 Sprint G900P - Soft bricked? Cycles on recovery mode, download mode works

Model: SM-G900P
I've tried every kind of rom flashing here, re-partitioning, recovery images, etc.
I really just want to get to the stock recovery mode with out the auto boot loop.
Please help.
What else do you need to know?
Try flashing TWRP 2.8.7.0 with ODIN, and boot into TWRP recovery
If you can get into TWRP, you have a very powerful recovery with a lot more options than stock, to try and get things working again before going back to 100% stock - if that's what you're aiming for

The flash seem to work via ODIN. See image below.
But it is still stuck in a boot loop for normal booting or for recovery mode.
Am I using Odin incorrectly??

A lot of newer S5s do the same thing (Except they usually boot back into stock recovery, but as yours isn't working, same thing)
Follow this guide (Using the correct version TWRP for your model S5)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64961009&postcount=2
You can ignore steps that are not relevant to flashing TWRP, or follow them all for a rooted phone (Apart from reactivation lock as you can't boot yet)

I followed these steps:
"3) boot into download mode.
4) Odin flash TWRP 2.8.7.0 (specifically this version).
5) DO NOT allow phone to boot, (uncheck auto reboot in odin and if necessary remove the battery as soon as the TWRP flash has completed) then.....
6) boot directly into recovery. (Vol +, Power & Home button combination)"
Although, they were not very specific....
To flash with odin, I used the AP button and did not let it auto reboot. Removed battery immediately. tried to reboot in recovery and saw the same issue.
I think I need all files.
BL
AP
CP
CSC
and possibly to re-partition with a PIT file
You say in the first post you have already repartitioned?
PIT file is for repartitioning
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2799613&d=1402839135
Extract to .pit, add to PIT section in ODIN, add ROM to AP section, flash both together
You can try older versions of ODIN for TWRP to, some people have success with version starting 3.07 > 3.10.7
I was able to do the PIT and the TWRP at the same time.
Although, my phone said "SECURE CHECK FAIL : pit" on the screen, it seemed to do everything.
But upon reboot to try to get to Recovery (power, home, Vol+), it no longer waits and reboots/recycles. It fails with a message that says "Could not do normal boot." and send me to Download mode.....
If I try to boot normally, I still get the boot loop....
I just used the PIT file I used last time and it's back to where I was when I started this post.
Endless reboot cycle...
Maybe the bootloader needs to be flashed?
Ok. My issue with the failing pit (and any other failures from Odin) was a combination of using a bad version of Odin or a bad version of the tar or pit files.
I am able to flash the latest stock rom g900p OK4 just fine.
I can flash twrp just fine as well.
But the boot loop cycle still remains.
I believe I know exactly what I need here and it's the stock OK4 boot loader.
Here's an Odin flashable OK4 bootloader for the G900P. https://mega.nz/#!9ItUDZ7C

Bootloader file was exactly what I was asking for. Thanks.
However, it did not solve the problem.
Boot loop cycle going on still after stock BL, Ap, PIT all flashed....
Any other suggestions ???? Please. From anyone?
I'm sorry to write in this old topic, but I want to know if you solved your problem, as I'm having the same trouble. Everytime I turn on the phone it stucks on bootloop, and after 5 to 10 cycles it starts. When trying to enter to Recovery it stucks on bootloop and never enters. I've tried with TWRP or Philz CWM but it just doesn't enter to recovery :'(

G900F stuck in Odin mode

Hi, I hope that someone can help me revive my S5. I was on resurrectionremix rom but decided to see what pure N5 rom was like. I asked up my rom then done the normal procedures & installed the N5 rom which booted up fine, after playing around with it for a Shor while I decided that I prefer resurrectionremix so I booted into twrp recovery, factory wiped as i have done many times in the past, when it had finished I rebooted but I stead of booting into life I was confronted with 'Downloading,... Do not turn off target' see attached picture & now I am unable to boot up. I have removed the battery and sim for 5 mins but nothing. If this has been posted before please could you direct me to it. Thankyou in advance
Did you restore your backup?
Flash TWRP again
Yes, tried flashing twrp recovery with Odin but still goes to the same. Trying to download the stock firmware from Samsonite but it keeps failing

Use samfirm tool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647
Just enter SM-G900F and BTU in the top left panels, and tick automatic for the rest
Then check the "Automatically decrypt" on the right, and hit download
When you flash TWRP with ODIN, flash TWRP 3.0.0.0, and uncheck "Auto reboot" in ODIN
Once it completes the flash, disconnect USB and pull the battery to power off, then replace battery and immediately boot into recovery with Volume Up & Home & Power
Thanks for your help, appreciated

Buy a jig to go on the download mode isn't too much expensive and then flash your stock rom using odin
I already flashed with stock ROM via Odin and it goes in download mode but same problem. I want to hard reset device but doesn't go into recovery mode.....help
Last option would be to extract the pit-file from the 4-file csc package and load it toghether with 4-file firmware in odin, tick re-partition and hope for the best.
If that won't work I'm afraid that your nand is damaged beyound repair, or some other partition is corrupt.
