How to reduce battery drain - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, how can I reduce battery drain to get phone to live more ? Right now I have installed AEX-5.7 with Android 8.1.0... it works well but i have to charge my phone for about 2, 3 times per day, if I play with it for about one hour. But the draining is expensive also during deep sleep, as like cpu works at full for all the time.
So which are the best app you tried that work without issues to lower cpu usage and reduce the battery drain ?

Flash a nougat rom and flash lambda kernel
It allows you to downclock and undervolt the cpu which can TREMENDOUSLY reduce heat and battery consumption

Quest for the best battery life.

Day 1:
Flashed Simple and Clean v1.3
2.6.35.7 speedmod test3 k2 kernel
Juice Defender Ultimate in Agressive mode.
Batterylife: 11 hours. Lost most of the life when the phone and I were both asleep during the night. It went down from 100 to 38%...
PS: If anyone wants to give me their set up so I don't have to spend so long on this quest, that would be appreciated...
There are 2 more threads with the same topic, with much more info. Also, we know nothing about how you use your phone, except that you have huge wakelocks. Not really helpful tbh.
care to point out those threads for me?

you could actually use the search function
PS - Ditch Juice Defender it uses up as much battery as it saves, trust me this is fact.
I did. I tried some of the solutions posted in some threads like using speedmod + clean n simple, and also lightning v6.1 and ninphetamine kernel; doesn't work.
I used to have the Galaxy S Vibrant before I got the S2. I swore by Juice Defender. I would get on average 45-60% more battery depending on usage (phone was rooted with OCLF installed). My S2 gets an additional 2-3% more life while running juice defender. Takes more than that to run it. My opinion, remove the app.
I am running sensation 1.9 rom and hardcore speedmod kernel. I work oh average 11 hours a day. Phone isn't used much during that time. Wifi is always on and by the end of my shift, it's at 94% or so.
When I get home, my phone is put through some heavy use. Facebook, youtube, texting galore and internet browsing. I always have 25-30% battery left at the bare minimum written I go to bed at 6-8 hours later.
In my personal opinion, this rom and kernel combination give me the best power (4700 on quadrant), best options (configuration got nearly anything) and best battery life (phone lasts all day with ease). I would recommend this to anyone in a heartbeat.

I'd recommend the Hyperdroid rom. A lot of users (including myself) have hit 5 hours screen on time (most I've seen is 7 hours). Phone can easily last a whole day, just need to check for wakelocks using BBS. 60% overnight is ridiculous lol, you should really be losing 1% every 4-5 at least unless you have loads of people ringing you all night
My setup
Rom: Hyperdroid 2.9.0
Kernal: TWD2.5
UV with voltage control
200mhz - 1200mhz
Sio I/O - Lulzactive governer
Max Screen On Time - 5 Hours 28 Mins
Facebook/Whatsapp Syncing
Read the guide i posted yesterday, its a bit long, but will definately save you battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351663
Also my setup is in my sig - very fast, very slick and above all great battery life (range between 20hrs and 28hrs moderate use)
I read the long thread. It has some points in there I didn't know about.
Will try HyperDroid Rom.
Tried Sensation. Battery life failed for me with that ROM. Will try it againwith speedmod kernel if HyperDroid doesn't work...
btw, what governor is the best for Hyperdroid?
i use
check/leo rom v 3.1.1
siyah kernel 2.2 beta6
ice cream sandwich theme
the kernel is set at smartass v2 governor
1.4ghz - 1300mv
1.2ghz - 1275mv
1ghz - 1150mv
800mhz - 1050mv
500mhz - 950mv
200mhz -900mv
100mhz - 875mv
my sgs2 doesnt like undervolting so them settings should be safe to use on most sgs2 handsets
i then have the following profiles
screen off 100mhz -- 200mhz
charging 100mhz -- 500mhz
in call 100mhz -- 500mhz
battery at 60% set cpu to 100mhz -- 1ghz
battery at 30% set cpu to 100mhz -- 800mhz
battery at 15% set cpu tp 100mhz -- 500mhz
getting excellent battery life with my sgs2
ive also frozen any apps i dont use via titanium and used a start up manager to stop certain programs starting at boot
i used to use juice defender but on the sgs2 it doesnt seem to wrk as well at all
i was getting wakelocks from facebook chat draining my battery so i have installed an app to auto close that when the screen goes off and that has saved me more battery and kept wakelocks down
as other users have said its all about how you use your phone , the settings above might be useless if you have lots of background tasks going on as a screen off profile off 100mhz -- 200mhz may not have enough power to do your background tasks however when my screen is off i want my phone to go to deep sleep and not consume power etc so a very low screen off profile suits my needs as does a low charging profile as i dont use my phone on charge and 500mhz max power suffices my needs for when the phone is charging
same goes for setting a battery % profile i know when my battery is at 15% i wont be playing high end 3d games so it makes sense for me to try and save battery and limit the cpu to 500mhz at that battery percentage but other users may want full power all the way till their battery dies , it all depends on what you want and do with your device
Day whatever:
Used Hyperdroid ROM: Battery Life is AMAZING!
Using their 2.5 TW kernel as well...
The first thing I did was restore all my apps with Titanium Backup, but then I got crappy battery life, so I reflashed the ROM but this time, I didn't restore any apps.
I got amazing battery life!
So it was an APP's fault!
yeah sometimes apps are rogue. Hyperdroid has an awesome kernal though, someones just hit over 8 hours screen on time with stock battery which is amazing. betterbatterystats would show you apps that are causing wakelock problems. I do use some app called gemini just so I can stop apps loading from boot (haven't been bothered to search for autostart apps). Fresh wipe is good sometimes though, fresh and clean is the way to go unless your upgrading from the same line of roms

Battery Saving Apps (4.0.4 Aurora ICS)

Hi there many of you have thought about battery saving apps.
Do they really work?
Are there some apps that instead of saving battery just drain your battery even more?
Do you know any methods that really save battery?
Just post your oppinions about this subject.

Battery saver apps are useless. just turn of data, sync,WiFi, Bluetooth when not in use. decrease screen brightness and screen timeout to 30 seconds. Use 245-806 with ondemand goveror for better battery.

I've read many people saying that using the ondemand governor wouldnt save that much battery because of the continuous search for cpu activity, actually i'm using performance at 1024 and i also have another profile with 806 performance aswell.
I have to test it better in order to see which governor saves more battery.
I think a good set may useful

I used to use 806 on demand, 1024 ondemand and 1200 ondemand... now I'm using 1024 performance, and I dont see any battery difference.. damn thing still drains.
The battery lasts 4/5 days on idle, what more do you want? It's par for the course.
why do you need the phone to stay on idle? for that you could buy a 10$ one =S

Because it's an indicator of battery performance and proves there's nothing wrong with battery life on Aurora, despite what many believe. Having ~1 day of battery life with heavy usage and 4-5 days (or even more) on idle is on par with the battery specs.

Actually we all know that the battery life in aurora its not full optimized. what i mean is what can we do in order to get the best performance without having to spend so much battery life. maybe its not possible but who knows
Fact: ICS produces more traffic than GB. A lot of apps (like browser) use more memory, so background processes die more quickly. You cannot except to get the same kind of battery performance out of an ICS rom and that's the end of it. This has nothing to do with Aurora.
When I dont need to use the phone I put the governor in powersave with a low Mhz and the battery is more safe with little use.
Phone become a little more slow but work.
When I really need to use the phone I change the governor to Smartessv2

will underclock provide realy more battery and reduce heat ?

hy there,
im on latest sokp rom on my g2 (d802)
i want to get more juice from my battery, so I setup my core setings at 1036 mhz max and minimum 300 mhz.
wil this provide me a lot off battery in real life and will it also reduce heat ? even if i watch hd movie or play graphical games
In theory yes it should but not as much as you think cause it will be offset because it will have to keep a higher frequency for a higher period of time. Temperature should be reduced a lot but keep in mind games will lag if they need the extra power

hmm, well after i underclocked i played asphalt 8 for like 20 mins and game performance did not changed significantly. and i feel that the phone is now cooler then before when multitasking stuff.
is there also another way that can realy increase battery life besides underclocking.

you also can try custom governors
Hey there, you may be suffering a placebo effect, it can give you a little extra juice, but in my opinion you get most of your battery with these 4:
1. Reduce timeout to 15sec.
2. Adjust screen brightness to be as low as possible (lux helps with this)
3. Eliminate vibrations of any kind (haptic feedback, notications that make your phone vibrate ex. whatsapp) and so on...
4. Data (Use Wifi if possible, 2g when you are not using your phone and airplane mode in some cases extend your battery for a lot too)
Don't expect to get more than 30 min of extra use changing your kernel configurations. ALTHOUGH if you are a heavy user (let us say, in this case, a heavy gamer) there are some kernel configurations you should check.
Also remember, if a task takes you 30min but only consumes 1 % per 30 min compared to doing the exact same task in 30seconds consuming the same 1% which one is worth it?
Phones hardware is way above the software we have available at this time, underclocking and undervolting is an option and you won't feel the difference but, as I've stated before, those are not the main issues of the battery drain.
I hope I've helped you out!

Only 4 cores are used

Hello,
I have a peculiar problem with my OnePlus Two
The faster A57 cores don't get activated, I have tried using Antutu, played Asphalt 8 And NFS NL for hours.
But the cores just won't get triggered
I'm using A1 CPU tool to monitor the same.
Even CPU Z wouldn't show me any activity on the other 4 cores while Antutu was running.
Any ideas? It's brand new can be returned

I just installed A1 CPU to verify your issue.
It shows cores 0,1,2,3,4 are used at 1344ghz for me as well.
When i check with synapse (i'm on AK kernel) it shows all cores are used.
I guess it's a limitation with A1 CPU tool. Try with other tool that supports such architecure.
I was sceptical on the same but, out of the box I remembered seeing 1777 MHz frequencies.
Thanks a lot
I shall try more tools and get back.
Though I think if you're on a different kernel and had the A1 CPU tool been correct it would be redundant, Because core allocation would be done on kernel level (in my knowledge).

I know that it was already discussed but maybe someone has found a solution.
The problem is that performance of device gradually decreases proportionally to the level of the battery.
For example:
- battery is 90%, Real Racing 3 runs perfectly,
- battery is 45%, some lags appear during gameplay
- battery is 10%, heavily FPS drop, almost impossible to play
Battery saver is turned off, device is cold in all tests.
If I would like to save my battery level - I will turn on battery saver manually,
but I WANT to have good game experience not depending on battery level
This is really crazy.
Tested on stock OOS 2.1.1, with stock kernel, with Boeffla an AK, tested on Exodus ROM - everywhere I can see this weird behaviour.
May be some system files must be edited to overcame this issue?

Hi Jemcik, hi Denhot!
I'm facing the same issues on my new device and it's definately not normal!
With a battery level of 19% I was not able to get the 4 A57 cores online, which results in lower system performance. Have you found a solution?
@Denhot!
Maybe we should rename the thread into: IS OPT PERFORMANCE REALLY DEPENDENT ON BATTERY STATUS AND IS IT A ROM FEATURE OR AN ISSUE!?
I think, one of the kernel devs should be able to answer this question.

It looks like some system configuration files with kernels activation policy have to be edited,
but I haven't found yet which files exactly.

I've never experienced such a function!
CPU power depending on battery voltage!? 62k with full battery, 49k with 20% battery both with same CPU temps!
Hopefully not a general problem on our side with the motherboard Voltage Regulator or something.
Have you been to a kernel thread and asked this question? If not, I will ask this in AK's kernel thread. Maybe he knows more about it!
The 4 high performance cores will only be activated when needed. What app are you using to check the core usage? Every now and then you should see 2 of the high performance cores sometimes coming to life every now and then, with the other 4 power efficent cores being more busy. Use CPU-Z to check.
Due to the way Oxygen OS's stock kernel works, only 2 of the high performance cores will ever be active, alternating between the 4 cores in an attempt to keep the phone cool and not throttle as often. If you want all 4 high performance cores to be active as well as overclocking it back to its original speeds, you'll need to flash a custom kernel.

Hi,
would like to share I don't have a similar experience, with NFS NL or Asphalt, phone was consistent with no lags even when it got unbearable to hold.
I as playing and simultaneously screen mirroring over to a TV.
Going from 65 to 25% over a long course.
I normally won't let my battery fall below 20%.
So the thing about Li-ion/pro is that as you go lower voltage decreases so to provide same power draw current increases.
Basically it would heat up faster.
That can be a reason combined with that their might be inbuilt measures to save battery like you said, nor as an engineer I would recommend you to stress your phone at those levels.
I can't explain the lag at 45%, didn't find it might try real racing 3 later to check.

This is consistent with what I've noticed. The time It didn't, a simple reboot helped solve it and it hasn't occurred since.
Also these tools can't monitor the other cores, if you're rooted why not try synapse as helkat suggested

Thanks man!
I know how the S810 should work!
But I thought the performance issues have only to do with the temps. But now it seems it have also to do with the battery level.
It would be good if someone tries to reproduce the following to verify it:
1. One run Antutu benchmark with fully charged battery and room cool temps.
To be sure the conditions are the same, shut the display off for one or two minutes, than start display again, kill all recent apps and run Antutu test and note the results.
2. Than wait or do something until your battery is down to 20%, shut the display off for the same time, kill recent apps and start Antutu test run again and compare the results.
I've also tried the same after a reboot, with always the same results.
With 100% I get scores between 60 and 66k and with lower capacity (20%) I get only 48 till 50k!
I am not interested about the benchmark results, but I need to know if this only occurs on my side.

So, guys!
I have tested it the last few weeks and it is a fact that the performance in benchmarks is dependent by the battery level.
We have tested it with 3 devices and it is always the same.
But thank God, it seems on the devices perfomance themselves (in apps/ui) this has no effect!
But each one can replicate this behavior very easy!

I have the same issue! When battery level goes lower than 20%, my A57 kernels become offline. I checked this with CPU-Z and PerfMon. And this is the same on stock or custom kernel. Now I am using Boeffla kernel. The most frustrating is that my UI suffer from this. I have lot of lags in simple apps, such as calculator or some messengers.
Same issue here, there are threads in one plus forums.
I think the threashold level is at 40 % ?? They made this to keep the battery up. You can also see faster battery drop till the 40-30% mark then it is harder to kill the battery.
I am also dissapointed in this, maybe we can search the kernel sources ? Or is there a daemon app that triggers this?
I received the phone with 20%-30% battery, started an antutu knowing how powerfull 810 chip is, then boom 45k same as the previos phone i had with 801 chipset...i was like what the fxck....runing antutu again with full battery - 66k.
well i have run benchmark in back ground with few game and apps .. and checked with cpuz max that i have notice was around 50-60% cpu load still 2 off those a57 cores were off using this device for 2-3 days it always turns off 2 cores for me rest 6 is working most of the time :/ Even in battery saver mode .. i am not sure if this is a cpuz issue as i have not rooted my device yet so cant say properly ..
Also i face some freq. benchmark issue like in benchmark it scores around single core - 690 multicore - 2.6K .. and if i restarts device it scores normal - 1.1K and 4.5K .. i have no idea whats wrong with this :/
20% Battery Mark
The drop in performance at 20% Battery is standard behavior of the Rom and Stock Kernel. The Big Cluster (A57) is completly shut down to save Battery. If you dont want this you have to use a custom Kernel which is able to switch this Battery saving strategy off. Boeffla Kernel for example can do that.
Read http://www.anandtech.com/show/9828/the-oneplus-2-review/2.
They "optimized" the soc.....
No they just turned off some cores so there is no heat problem.
So I think this is my first and latest oneplus.
they've hit the mark! What the hell, i think they must be sued for false marketing. Its just like buying a car with 400 hp and those hp are only there when i'm parked or listen to music, if i'm on the highway or on the ridge the car has 100 hp...wtf :|

Calm down lol it's actually good on their part. Shutting down A57 cores on low battery is a good thing because the A53 cores use much lesser battery. If you're out on a trip and have 10% battery, with the A57 cores this will probably drain off within an hour of intermittent usage. When only the A53 cores are active, the battery life will increase greatly.
Companies design phones for average users, not just gamers. If you don't want this feature, root your phone, flash boeffla's kernel and disable the BCL Battery Driver. It's as simple as that

I have never got this much screen on time on the leeco le 2 (SD version) so I just had to share this with somebody... anybody really. Whomever has done better please feel free to share your awesome le 2 battery life with smallEUI, stock,or any other rom (doubtful).
So I just got 8 hours and 30 minutes of sot running smallEUI version 3 with illusion kernel v2.5. (Note: I used v2.5 because v3 uses lazy plug for CPU hot plugging which IMHO has far more battery drain than the stock Qualcomm core control) but I digress...
Anyways, I am a heavy gamer and frequently play real racing 3 for more than 1.5 hours in some days Today I decided to cut back and only played it for 25 minutes. This reduced gaming time enabled me to subject my phone to a more mixed use pattern. When I started I wasn't even looking to break any screen on time records but at around 21% battery remaining, I was at 7 hours SOT so I decided to keep using the phone normally until I ran it down to empty.
Here's some background to this achievement...
First off, I don't run anything on stock settings. I use a slimmed down EUI rom, a custom kernel to boot, and minor tweaks to the build.prop. I have done major tweaks to the custom kernel, use greenify in elevated mode, and block the recommended wakelocks on kernel adiutor app. I have also improved thermal thresholds to minimize throttling. When CPU thermal throttles, it leads to more power consumption because it has to stay on longer and use more CPU cycles to finish tasks that it could have completed much faster with high clock speed at the expense of negligible heating. I looked at the stock smallEUI thermal config and was shocked to find that the CPU starts throttling when it reaches temperatures as low as 38 degrees Celsius. (That's too low). The big cores are allowed to hot plug at a measly 40 degrees and at 42 degrees the system is allowed to turn off three of them. Only CPU 4, which is the first big core that controls the other 3 is exempted from being turned off due to this insanely low threshold. However, it doesn't escape the overall thermal tolerance which is set at 38-70 degrees. At which point, it will be doing just 883MHz before getting completely shut down! We all know (I hope we do) that big cores are generally more efficient at higher clock speed but someone must have missed the memo here. (Big cores are set to throttle down to 998MHz at just 50 degrees! Crazy, right). @iaureeel should look into this.
For monitoring, I use better battery stats xda edition, gsam battery monitor, and kernel adiutor overview page. I don't have WiFi so all data comes through 4G (the signal is usually above average to excellent) -- this phone has better reception than any other I've ever used ??
The usage:
Here's a summary of the notable things I did. You may browse the screenshots to see more.
First off: Games...
I played real racing 3 for around 25 minutes
Tried out a newly downloaded (on this same charge cycle) 3D game called war wings -- Around 20 minutes. Spoiler alert: it's awesome?
Starting with full charge and hammering the battery to about 15%, I can play real racing 3 for 4 hours non-stop.
Others:
I watched some YouTube over 4G for 30 minutes
I used brave to browse the web for just over an hour.
Side note: surface flinger showed up on BBS probably because I speeded up scrolling in build.prop. It shouldn't be this active but the power draw is probably not too significant.
How I did it
Recap of what enabled me to have this sot figure:
1. Optimized custom EUI-based ROM (smallEUI)
2. Custom kernel (heavily customizable and tweaked to kingdom come)
3. Greenify
4. Higher thermal tolerance for the CPU (it doesn't even get hot enough to be uncomfortable even at highest load. The plus for the battery here is that the CPU completes tasks much faster and then goes into a quick race to idle (thanks to a tweak I've added to blu_active governor for big cores)
5. No automatic brightness! I often get by with minimum brightness but when I need more I manually bump it up to 10-25%. 50 % is enough for me to comfortably use the phone outside. And not in direct sunlight because who can compete with the sun? Not any phone's display. THAT'S FOR SURE!
6. Cherry-picked build.prop tweaks
7. No Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and other naughty social apps that put your phone in a wakelock chockhold until its precious juice is depleted.
Conclusion:
I have never been one to hunt screen-on-time records (and wasn't in this case) but today has showed me a side of this phone that I didn't know existed. That's really good battery backup. I didn't think it was this easy but leeco did some clever things too in order to make it possible. First is charging the battery to 4.4 volts which increases charge holding capacity to 110% of the reference design. I don't recommend that you charge to 100% because it will be at the expense of battery life span. (Unless leeco uses a military grade battery like they do in the Coolpad cool 1 dual and LeRee le 3).
Another thing that helps is the inclination of EUI towards power saving. SmallEUI is even better because it saves power without hindering user experience. Notifications come on time and there is no stuttering even on stock everything.
Full disclosure: My phone is brand new(ish) at just one month old.
That's all for now... Check out the screenshots. As they say, the proof is in the pudding ?. There's a limit to the number of files I can attach so I've put the rest in a .zip file
