QUESTIONS about updating the phone for the first time - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

So I recently purchased this phone and still has yet to turn it on (still waiting for the external SD card to arrive so yeah), and anyway I was wondering if I should update this phone and then do a factory reset after the update to let things settle in. Cause that's what I always did when I was messing with custom ROM back on Xiaomi RN4. The question is, is it still necessary to do so here, and will the update sticks on the phone if I factory reset it? Since this is from different brand after all, so I thought it won't hurt to ask it just to make sure it won't be a hassle when I turn the phone and update it later.

Device keeps rebooting itself

Since I got the Samsung Galaxy S 2 it kept rebooting itself every once in a while.
This seemed to happen only after doing something.
For example:
After opening an app.
It even happened once when I got a phone call.
I've reformatted the device the 2nd day I got it (for another reason) and it still happens.
Does this happen to anyone else?
What can I do?
What is the your device?

Galaxy S 2.... Thought it was pretty obvious since I posted in the GS2 thread
I'll update it though
If it still happens after the update I'd return it. Mine have been rock steady since day one, had it for 10 days now.

Not always .
But i would install latest firmware first .
Either via official Kies update or unofficial Odin method .
Or return it to seller .

I had random rebooting after moving apps to SD. Dolphin HD seemed to be the main offender.
I moved all the apps back to phone and then, just for good measure, formatted my internal storage & SD card (after backing them up). All seems happy again now.

Do this and then a hard reset. If it's still rebooting exchange the phone.
No, I didn't need to hard reset but it is worth a try. Mine has now settled down again.
What version of the software are you on? If you still get problems then get it exchanged.
I'm on the 2.3.3 version Kernel 2.6.35.7.
When I go to Setting> About> Software update it says that there are none.
What do you mean by hard reset?
In the Settings> Privacy there is a Factory Data Reset option. Is that what you mean?

The build number is
Gingerbread.XWKDC
Also, in the Kies software it says that this version of the device cannot be upgraded. Why is that?
So should I reformatt the device again? How can I back everything up including my contacts and the way I synced them with facebook etc? Can I also back up widgets?
Edit: When I try to use the Backup option in Kies, it keeps showing 0% and doesn't change.
What can I do?
Also, in the Kies software it says that this version of the device cannot be upgraded. Why is that?
Because their is no update supplied by the phone supplier to Kies .
XWKDC old firmware .
How can I back everything up including my contacts and the way I synced them with facebook etc?
KIES or and back up contacts to Sim Card or Google mail
Can I also back up widgets?
Yes Titanium pro from the market .
A factory reset and wipe all data.
Or return to seller /service centre .
Or use unofficial method and upgrade firmware yourself but that wont fix hardware fault .

Factory reset doesn't wipe the SD card, I believe. Hard reset wipes everything including SD card. Type *2767*3855# on the dial pad to do this

Happened to me, same instances; could be micro SDHC compatibility problem. Seems that the Apacer 16GB micro SDHC I was using was causing the reboot. Formatting the micro SDHC on the phone doesn't help. Popped another Transcend 32GB micro SDHC into it and the rebooting just went away, didn't happen no more.

If XWKDC is old firmware, and Kies won't let me upgrade it, how do I upgrade it?
When you say phone supplier you mean my carrier? Because the SGS2 isn't out yet where I come from. I got it from the UK.
When you say unofficial methods, what does that mean? Does that require rooting?
I'm having a similar problem when i connect to pc with USB, after disconnecting the phone and usb cable the media scanner starts, completes and then phone reboots?
Anyone else experienced this?

So just to make it clear:
I've got an old software version and I need to upgrade it and it might solve my rebooting problem?
I have the same problem. At least 10 reboots a day. Have now removed the sd card and it's run 2 days so far without problems

so will removing my sd card sort it out? Do i have to take it out permanently? i've only just got it

Stock SM-N9005 Restarting 4-5 times a day - need some advice

Hi,
I have been having a ongoing problem with my Galaxy Note 3 N9005 in where after the 5.0 upgrade (stock over air) it has been restarting pretty much 4-5 times during the day, and a number of times while even just sitting on the desk doing nothing.
Since I am still on contract with my supplier in NZ, I took the phone back to get repaired, in which Samsung sent it back to state "Software corruption, reloaded software".
I didn't believe them, but hoped it was correct - but sure enough the same thing happened. So I once again took it back, where they have once again told me the same thing. It is now the third time I have done this, with Samsung saying the same thing!
Now I am at wits end, and have asked for replacement, but I am being told "It is due to your google account being corrupt, and it is causing software corruption....." *sigh*
So now not only is Samsung just not helping, they are blaming my Google accounts for causing the issue. Which btw - I didn't setup the last time, and still it restarted - but they are ignoring that fact!
Anyway - the advice I want to get is has anyone else had the same issue with the Galaxy Note 3 after upgrading? I know there is no way to rollback 5.0 to old version, but did anyone fix the issue by Root and then adding another ROM (I don't want to root this phone, but to be honest I also can't afford right now to replace so I am looking at options)
Right now I am facing a ongoing battle with Samsung and my provider to replace the phone, but they are fighting it a lot and to be honest I have lost my patience so I am thinking to just drop them, root/flash new Rom, and then go to another provider - and probably never buy Samsung again when I can finally upgrade.
(used to love Samsung products but this behavior I have had is certainly making me think twice before I touch them again)
Since they refuse to accept warranty you can try to flash twrp. Then clear everthing(system/caches). Then back to stock with odin. There might be leftover of corrupted files that could cause reboot.
But later they have a better reason not to accept your phone, knox tripped.
And you can actually downgrade to 4.4.2. Just flash firmware of the same csc to be safe.

Do you have memory card installed? if so then scan you memory card for possible viruses.
Actually I have this issue too before.
Even if I left it lying on the table, it can restart by itself.
I tried to update to latest PB1 rom, the update failed, the phone restart while ODIN updating.
So I use Kies recovery and got it working again.
After that, i tried again update to PB1 rom using ODIN. and now no issues at all.
I dont know which one did the trick whether update to PB1 or KIES recovery.

Thanks - but no I don't - these are the first things I did when it started happening.
When it started happening I did factory reset, removing memory card, factory reset again, didn't restore backup from google... etc etc - so the general admin tech stuff.
Because under warranty (2 year contract) I didn't want to do anything more so sent to provider to get dealt with (into my 22 months of 24 months). For the last 4 months it has been to them a number of times for the same thing.
Now each time they send it back they claim "software corrupt" and that there is no hardware issue. So doing a software root and mod change for me is a hope - and probably not a good one - that the Stock 5.0 is the problem on this phone. And only going down this road because I am coming out of the warranty and right now I have a phone I can't really use, and damn Samsung won't support it or fix it (which is really all I want them to do!!) sigh

Thanks for this information, because in fact you are not the first time I have read this but I am not sure what the Kies recovery is - is there some instructions you have because maybe that is what should try, because I have seen other people on Google state this has helped them with restarting, but that was usually after Mod fix. Maybe there is something in the 5.0 update on GN3 that might cause this?

Thanks I didn't think from what I was reading that you could backwards - in fact Samsung have just down right refused, which is all I have asked them to do in the last two times - "Just flash back to the version that was on there last 4.4.2. because that didn't cause any issues!" However, they are stating very firmly that you can not rollback or re-flash back to a previous version.
Is there any instructions which are for the 9005? I have seen for the 900 but the instructions state very clearly you can't use them for 9005.

Just flash the firmware with odin. Factory reset in recovery after it's done. That's it. There are a lots of threads about going down such this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...o-downgrade-lollipop-to-kitkat-t2990262/page2
I suggest you read through before you go further. They are mixed results. Some successful. Some did not. That is why it is better to flash the same csc firmware.
I even able to downgrade my S6 from 6.01 to 5.1.1 without issue but of course it's different phone.

note 4 (N910A) verity error after stock ota update from 5.1.1 to 6.0.1

Hey guys,
I could use your expertise and help.
After updating my stock Note 4 Att variant from 5.1.1. to 6.0.1, I came back to my phone powered off. After turning it back on it freezes at the Att logo screen. Trying to boot into safe mode was a no go so I tried booting into recovery. Everything looked go for a second, I was greeted with an installing updates animation but that quickly was shut down and I got the "dm-verity verification failed..." error.
I tried wiping the cache and doing a factory reset. Talking with att technical support was no help at all. They basically told me if wiping the cache and factory reset didn't work I would have to get the phone replaced and pay a $150 deductible. I'm not paying them another dime when their update bricked my phone
So I'm here heart in hand hoping you guys could help me out. I did root my note 2 back in the day but forgot most of what it entails and was pretty bummed when I found out there was no root for the note 4. So I'm not a total noob but bear with me.
I did try Kies 3 but my phone wont connect. I tried off, on and in recovery still nothing.
Searching online it seems like most of the solutions require root access which this phone doesn't have. It also looks like it needs the stock firmware but most of the links I found here and elsewhere are dead, and sammobile doesn't have them either.
So what should I do? Am I out of options? Should I junk it cause Att sucks? Any sort of direction would be a big help! :highfive:

Make sure samsung kies or samsung usb drivers are installed on your pc.
Download stock marshmallow firmware and flash through odin .this method does not require root.
After flashing dont let the phone boot just go to recovery and wipe cache+wipe data factory reset then reboot.
Wait 10 to 15 minutes.
Stock rom link.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24651430732238073
Extract file and choose AP tab in odin.
Upload firmware file then connct device via usb cable to pc.
Hit start in odin.
You're the man! Not only did you save my phone, you stuck it to Att's money grubbing hands in one fell swoop. People will write songs about you, you'll go down in the history books as the man, the myth, the legend! People will swoon in your presence!
In all seriousness though you're awesome! Thank you!
One last question, will I be able to use the ota updates from here? Not that I would be too comfortable using them after this debacle, just wondering if they should work.

Thanks for the compliment. you just made me feel like i am a Hercules :victory:
If you want my advice dont ever take ota updates.
Just go to www.sammobiles.com/firmwares and grab latest rom for your model and flash in odin as you did.
Latest rom comes with the same security patch update the 1 comes in ota.
I personally do this way all the time.
Hope that helps and have a good day.

Sprint GS7 - No WIFI and "CUSTOM" after last OTA update. KNOX 0x0.

Ok, so this is my wife's phone. After the last OTA update to QE1, she noticed that the WIFI would not turn on. I kinda ignored her for a couple of weeks until she really made a fuss of it. When I finally got around to it I also noticed that "CUSTOM" was present in the phone information area as well as upon bootup. I've searched XDA as well as other sites and tried everything I could think of but nothing has helped. I cannot mess with any WIFI settings because it will not turn on at all so I can't even access the menu. Neither Sprint nor Samsung will touch the phone because they claim I rooted it. I didn't. I have factory reset it numerous times with no luck. I have ODIN'd the software for a full reset and used all older software versions even. Following Sprint's own software updates, no luck. I have used the Samsung SmartSwitch program on the computer to also do a full reset to factory multiple times with no luck. The Samsung rep at the local Best Buy even tried it. The only thing that a full reset helps with is getting rid of the "CUSTOM" notification until you reboot the phone. It doesn't fix WIFI.
Has anyone had experience with this problem? I am getting ready to root it, but I'm not sure if that will even help. Additionally, the phone currently does not have Sprint service, I had to activate her old phone... So, I don't have access to the internet with the phone unless I reactivate it on an account... I looked at a root option, but it requires wifi...
I'm open to suggestions. Please help..
Ok, so no one has any input on how to fix my problem. Is it not possible with the locked bootloader?

After running odin with stock firmware, go into recovery and hard reset the device again . As far as Hard Bricking on Purpose, that would be fraud, something not allowed to be discussed here. Mods please lock this thread.
Thanks for the reply. Sorry about breaking the forum rules, I went ahead and edited my original posting. I've already tried odin with stock firmware and hard resetting the device numerous times with no luck... I'd like to be able to dig deeper into the phone but I'm guessing that won't be possible with the locked boot loader?

Downgrade question - possible upgrade upon restart?

Hey all,
I am very much willing to wipe my phone to do a downgrade.
I have the OP8 Pro, unrooted (never rooted/never unlocked bootloader).
The scenario I see is - I downgrade my phone to 10.15.13 (I have the INAA modell). I'm sure at some point the phone will check for an OTA.
My question - Is it all possible for the phone to upgrade itself if it restarts?
Meaning, is there a time limit that the update is sitting in the queue waiting for the user to press reboot to install? Or can I just somehow figure out a way to silence the system notification of an update pending?
Not sure if that makes sense but my hope is to just go back to 10 and enjoy certain things that just worked out better for me unrooted vs 11 unrooted until some things are ironed out.
Thanks for your time.
No you would need to initialise the upgrade, unless you have automatic updates on.
You would have seen the initial installation begin.
Least that's my experience of it. The update is stored on the phone so you may also be able to delete it.
Turn off automatically download updates.
I downgraded using the special firmware I found (couldn't find official to do it ) and then installed the official EU/UK firmware straight after with no problem
