Hello everyone - I attempted to root my phone today ended up bricking it. Originally I was unable to boot into recovery, I was getting a boot loop with a red message - only official binaries are allowed to be flashed. I tried flashing twrp but no luck. I tried flashing original firmware back to my phone using Odin which was failing every time. I have also tried the restarting the phone method and then quickly going back into download mode to proceed with Odin which also isn't working. Currently - I can only go into download mode and if I restart it just brings me to a giant message and exclamation mark that says - "An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software." (i have never used smart switch before). At this point - I'm not sure how to proceed - any help is appreciated. Thank you

I would try using smart switch method first to restore your phone. Link below is a start

Odin errors can range. Without knowing what error Odin is telling you it's a bit hard to say.
try latest firmware with july patches...it will work use odin 3.13.1 or prince comsy odin

As long as you can enter download mode you just need the latest firmware which I was able to find on Sammobile.com. I was using some older versions which was why I couldn't get out of being bricked. Thanks to Khawarjaved on this thread who pointed out the major change in the newer firmware.

Hello all:
I foolishly tried to root my note 3 and now all i have is the screen telling me that upgrade issues were encountered and to use software repair, and the little text on top says knox warranty void.
Is this the end of my phone or is there hope for me.

Yeah try to use the Verizon Repair assistant on your pc. Another one to try is Kies 3 which you can download to your pc and run.
Pull the battery and then put in back in and hold down power+home+volume down. Once in custom screen press volume up.
If you can do this your okay.
You can use Verizon Repair assistant, Kies 3 or the latest version of Odin and download the tar file for the version you were on.

You can hook your phone into your pc and run Odin. If you go to that thread up above it got the info and links for all you need.
Your not screwed at all. Just takes some time to download the files to your pc.
What version were you on before trying to root?
Also what we're you using to root?
---------- Post added at 08:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:46 AM ----------
Also sometime it takes hooking up to different usb ports on your pc to get it to install drivers

Here's another thread to help get you back up and running. Download Odin on your pc then which ever version you were on. Being MI9,MJ7,or MJE. Download and extract the tar and place in Odin and run. Those threads explain everything great. Read up on those. Good luck bud

You stuff was awesome, however, it is not that the programs do not work, it is the fact that my pc, under no circumstances will recognize my phone when plugged into these programs, or even recognize it as a device after the drivers are in. The note literally has to be up and running for it to be recognized.
Thanks

From the looks of your photo your warranty is still good. You are stuck in download (odin) mode. The Knox warranty void line shows 0x0 witch is still good. When the line says 0x1 your warranty is toast. I have the identical screen when I enter download mode and my phone is bone stock. I haven't tried root yet because Verizon has allowed disabling and stopping most of the bloat apps. Also I do not want to trip Knox. Have you tried holding down the power button until it reboots? As for the note having to be fully powered up to be recognized is not so. When you enter download mode is when you connect your usb. I would try a different usb port or a standard usb 2.0 Motorola cable if you have one. Either way your warranty is not toast.

Your advice is truly appreciated, but i think my computer hates my note. I have tried every port, all the drivers are on the machine, and I still do not get recognized. When the phone was working, it had no problem getting recognized, now, all of a sudden....poof
Yea same screen most of us have or had. You need to install ODIN connect to PC and run ODIN it should tell you if it reads it when "ID:COM" shows "0:[COM4]" or any other number. If it does show "0:[COM4]" you are good flash a stock image of the version you were on before attempting root (MI9, MJ7, or MJE).

Below are the screens I get, I tried flashing the delavega root before, and of course got the error shown. I am now downloading the stock tar file, mje, and try to flash it with odin when done downloading.
Is odin showing the com box the correct way, or should it be another color and say something else?
Thanks.

How about entering recovery mode (home+vol up+ power on) and clearing cache and or factory reset. Clearing cache worked on my old S3 with a similar issue.

I am very happy that I was able to flash the factory version back to the note. You have all helped me very much, I truly appreciate it, and I hope to contribute to the site as well.

Awesome, I'm glad you worked it out...Merry Christmas
I just bought a Galaxy S4 running 4.2.2 out of the box and I had it 1 day and was getting persistent notifications about a new software update. I went into apps and hit stop the updater and thought that would solve it, i didn't think i had to freeze the app. Then about 2 hours ago screen flashes your phone will update itself in 30 seconds !out of nowhere! so i tried hitting the back button and turned it on and off and i couldn't stop it. Now i am seeing a installation screen when the phone is on and a progress bar...I dont understand. I never hit continue and I never saw a large download happen at all, i dont know if it happened in the background while i was downloading apps or not? This is the screen i get.....
I don't want to lose the ability to root and I want to keep as many options open as possible for flashing custom ROMs. I'm embarrassed to ask but i do not know what to do. Can anyone help me?

It IMMEDIATELY goes to that install screen even though it says "booting into recovery" just before. Is there a combo with the power button and volume keys i can use to abort and get back to recovery maybe?

Okay first I tried to boot into recovery and got this screen...
than i tried the up button and got this screen....
but nothing happened after 10 mins, so i went back to recovery and this time at the "triangle screen" i hit down to retart the phone. The galaxy s4 title screen came up and then nothing happened. After a while i tried to reboot again...again title screen and then nothing. So after a while i tried recovery again and now i cannot get recovery to boot. I am in over my head, I am sorry for this. Do you know how i should proceed?
I am aftaid i have soft bricked the phone or something...
all i can get is the "Galaxy S4" then the screen goes black and will not come back on
managed to get back into recovery and hit "factory reset" and it was not succesful.

As you can go to download mode (one with the Green android symbol) you are ok.
Just download your firmware from sammobile.com. Make sure you download correct version. In your case try downloading 4.2.2 version.
Use Odin 3.07. That's the version I use to flash 4.2.2 MG1 on my phone.
Unzip the downloaded firmware file with 7zip. Run odin as admin. Put firmware file in PDA slot. MAKE SURE REPARTITION IS UNCHECKED. Click on start. After flashing is done your phone will restart.

From the screenshot in the OP, your phone actually started to update. If the bootloader got updated, then you will have to flash the firmware that matches the bootloader version or above.
Get into recovery and the bootloader version will be mentioned on the 2nd line.

I am assuming you have a ATT S4. If not, this information would be incorrect.
The update would have been to kitkat. If so, the bootloader version would end with NB1. The jelly bean version ends with MK2. If you are still on 4.2.2, then it would end with MF3 (or maybe, the version line may not even be displayed).
The download mode is entered by pressing volume down + home while powering up and then pressing the volume up when the screen is displayed.
The recovery mode is entered by pressing volume up + home while powering up.

You need to go to download mod. If you can not go to recovery mode to check the Boot loader version then first try to install 4.2.2 firmware. If you Boot loader is already upgraded then 4.2.2 flashing will fail in odin.

Okay, first off thank you all for the continued patience. I can go to download mode and recovery mode. How do i check the boot loader version in recovery mode? I have the standard options in blue then below in yellow i have the following above a android with a explimation point that says no command:
#MANUAL MODE#
--Appling Multi-csc...
Applied the csc-code : ATT
Succesfully applied multi-csc.
and thats it.
I've never seen BL version in download mod. I have I337M Canadian version though.Since you already downloaded 4.2.2 firmware try installing it.
The newer recovery has the version right on top 2nd line below the Android Recovery Version line. If you don't see, then maybe you still have the old one. Try flashing the stock 4.2.2 firmware.

I just tried the firmware 4.2.2 update. Tried it twice. In red lettering in download mode the phone said:
SW REV. CHECK FAIL : fused : 2 :Binary :1
I also took this picture of the Odin screen:
I am not sure what to try now. I am not sure if it matters that i cant turn the phone on so I cant check USB Debugging. I did install drivers from the Samsung website. I am hoping that this code means more to someone than it does to me...
Thank you for the continued patience
Obviously right from the start it doesen't even start writing so does that mean it IS the bootloader? One member suggested that from earlier picture the phone had started to install the kit kat update when i pulled the battery. I then went into recovery and the phone stopped trying to update but it also started boot looping.

You've blown a couple of Q-fuses. You need to ODIN MK2 or NB1. More than likely NB1. There is a thread in the general section that explains how to partially revert back to MK2 from NB1 that will allow you to install and use safestrap recovery. I suggest you put your phone down a do a few days worth of reading in the General and Q&A sections before you do anything else. Good luck.
Hey guys. Having an issue with my S4, i337m on Rogers in canada. I unlocked it using the downgrade/ region lock away method. Went to flash stock 4.4.2 NE1 firmware and it keeps saying FAIL right off the go. I cannot successfully flash stock. But I am soft bricked since it starts and fails 2 seconds in. Could i get some help!
soft brick
I am also soft bricked, but not of rogers. I don't mean to blow up your thread.
- I have ran this same process on 4 SGH-i337 and for some reason this one is being a b!tch.
- I am pretty sure it's because I took the OWA update for 4.4.2 - showing "Write protected" and stuck on the firmware upgrade encountered an issue.
- Kies is no help. This is a new phone I just received, was working OWA boot locked my ass.
- Not sure if I was on NB1 or what cause I don't remember (probably)
- Tried running muniz_ri steps on I337UCUFNB1_I337ATTFNB1_505595_REV06 and all I get is failed - thinking due to the write protection
- Found some threat for .pit but thats not taking.
- Any suggestions or versions of Odin I should be trying? Was using: Odin+3.09 which i have ran this on a few SGH i337 with no issues before.
--------------
So I was able to use the Download JFLTE_USA_ATT_16G.pit via ODIN v3.07 and that seem to fix the part issue.

Hello butthurtlocker,
What have you tried, what version of Odin?
- Provide as much detail as you can....
- Have you tried any other Stock roms?
- Are you able to get back into the Download section?
- Have you tried to do a cache wipe? (Hold VOL ^ and Power)?

I am just downloading NI2 firmware, and will try and report once ive tried. I can get into download mode yes! And I have tried a cache wipe/ factory reset. Just redownloaded a Odin 3.09, have been trying it on 3.09 that i downloaded like 1 year ago, so maybe refreshing with reinstall will help I appreciate the reply!
If you are getting A NAND WRITE ERROR in Odin just change the cable.
Hi all,
So i just got a new S5 in the mail today and right away i got set to rooting it. I downgraded to NCG build, installed busybox, superuser, and safestrap recovery, and began flashing a new rom in rom slot one, separate from the stock slot. My error came when i flashed a rom and kernel and firmware for a BOG5 build, and i didnt odin the tar file for BOG5, which puts me here, with a phone that powers on (what i mean is the screen turns on and can enter DL mode), is recognized in device manager as a samsung composite device, but is not read by ODIN (its like the com port isnt even there), and cannot boot into safe strap as it instantly gets hung up at "Samsung Galaxy S5, Powered by android".
Please, help me.
I have no idea how you can get into download mode and not have it work. If the download mode screen is there, it's working (?)

BTW, you can't use ROM slots with Lollipop.

My guess is that you do not have the required samsung USB drivers installed. You can't just install ODIN, you have to also install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038555
The com port doesnt even show up on odin. I tried both 3.10 and 3.09. It sucks! And thats good to know, probably contributed to the reason it fails to boot. I definitely have the correct drivers because odin worked for me to downgrade to NCG.
try downloading flashfire and flashing it that way maybe?
I cant use flashfire because i cant boot my phone up to open the app
I cant use flashfire because i cant boot my phone to download/install let alone run the app.
hmmm did you try turning it off and on?
A bunch of times. The only way to do it is pulling the battery.
If it's booting to download mode, then it _is_ working. Are you sure you have odin set up properly?
Yeah, positive. It's worked for me right up until I misflashed this rom. Now it isn't even being detected by odin.
Are you opening Odin and then connecting the USB to the phone when it is in DL mode? Seen issues when having it all connected and then opening ODIN.. just a random idea..
S8 with stock ROM crashed, now have "dm-verity verification failed". Please help.
I'm trying to flash the latest update to try and fix this through Odin, but no luck. Just keeps failing.

what version of Odin do you have and what firmware are you trying to flash? Odin version is critical and you have to be flashing a firmware with at least the same or newer bootloader than what was previously on the phone

the thing with samsung devices is that if you can get to Odin mode, they re likely easily fixable. Make sure you have the latest version of Odin, sometimes youll even need a modified version of Odin depending on what youre trying to do. Use the factory cable or another that you know to have good data throughput, battery at a minimum 50%, a firmware version that is compatible with your phone (which is commonly based on the version of Android you last flashed because you cannot go backwards on bootloader revisions). I always keep several version of Odin on my computers at all times just in case. Also hang on to the firmwares youve flashed in case you need to reflash them

I'm using Odin 3.13.3 (but also tried 3.0.7 and 3.10)
and trying to flash the latest official samsung update (8/1), but have also tried the last two.
The phone gets to the blue download mode, appears in odin as [0:COM4], but whatever I try to flash to it, it says:
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
Not sure what else to do.

try a new cable. i know it sounds dumb, but its a common culprit. I used to use an old blackberry cable that was excellent for data throughput.
diff cable and/or diff usb port
hell, ive even had to go to a different computer in some instances. but if you can get to download mode, youre still in good shape
oh, how full is the battery?
