Just wondering. I have a Touch Pro, and have been pretty dissapointed by it's overall graphics performance. I'm not talking about 3d graphics either, I'm talking about watching videos, and other apps that have animated 2d graphics like games, web browsing, etc.
The 2d rendering of the TP is pretty pathetic given the cost and specs of the device. Especially in landscape mode... I don't know why, but performance drops extremely when rotating the display into Landscape. On apps that allow me to measure framerate, I see something like a 30% decrease in frames drawn in landscape.
Now, I haven't seen any such complaints on the X1, and I see them going on ebay for ~$600, and have seen used Touch Pro's get bid up to roughly $400, so I figure, if I can pay $200 for a nicer device with the kind of graphics performance that this generation of devices should be capable of, this might be something worth considering.
So what's the word... does the Xperia suffer from the same bad performance?
i feel it suffers from the same problem as touch pro, like the rest of the msm7xxx devices
the 3d acceleration is there, and video playback is quite smooth when converted using the program from the sticky
opera zooming and scrolling is somewhat faster than touch pro, and gps is definitely way better, but when it comes to gaming there is still a bit of lag comparing to some older models sadly (bejeweled 2 and quartz 2, you feel the jerkiness is there, but not enough to be lagging, emulation is just pathetic)
the panel selection is slow as heck, but i dont use it anyways, so i remapped the button to screen rotation
i dont see much slowdown when touch pro is in landscape mode from before, and right now not from x1 either, so cant help you there
coming from touch pro, im definitely happier with x1, but not quite as happy as with my old and busted dell axim x51...
Dell Axim X51v is definitely a very nice device. Friend of mine ordered one after I recommended it to him, and man it is nice. There are still NEW ones for sale on Ebay!! I have considered more than once, going back to a 'dumb phone', and getting one of those for my WinMo addiction, but that just seems so backwards when I think about it.
As far as the Touch Pro and the landscape issues... for anyone who 'doesn't see it', try running any app that lets you display frame rate, or any app that will benchmark 2d graphics drawing in both portrait and landscape.
Perfect example, use SK Tools benchmark, run the bitmap drawing portion, in portrait first, then in landscape. I have found that in landscape the phone scores consistently about 30% lower (less bitmaps drawn), and also, while it draws smoothly in portrait, in landscape you can see visible diagonal tearing (like Vsync has stopped working) as it draws the bitmaps.
I see this in browsing (tearing in opera mobile, much jerkier scrolling), in videos (visible tearing on anything resembling a moving scene), gaming (tearing and jerky frame rate), whereas in portrait these apps are more or less butter smooth.
I am frankly shocked that so many people claim that 'mine doesn't have this issue' when it's been on several Touch Pro's I have seen with my own eyes running various roms, and once I tell people where to look, they all come back and post how they see it.
If the Xperia doesn't have this issue, I will buy one in heartbeat while I can still get a decent price for the Pro!
I don't have issues with video playback.

Um... dude... yes, you do. I saw several pauses/stutters in the video playback on the Xperia, to the point that the videos on the two devices became more and more out of sync the longer you watch the vid. They were almost spot on at the beginning. Also, even in the relatively low quality Youtube vid, you can see some tearing here or there on quick moving scenes. Overall it's not bad and probably 90% of people wouldn't care or notice.
I will say that your vid played better than what I currently get watching vids on TCPMP on my touch pro though.

sharp eyes. I'm probably that 90% that won't tell the difference (even after you tell me)
zenkins what app are you using to play that movie?
coreplayer
For those who don't know, HTC has opted to not pay for the accelerated drivers for the X1. The same can be said for the Touch Pro and the Touch HD. HTC has a long history of doing this at least as far back as the Kaiser which. Even the president of the company acknowledged the issue and promised to make the drivers available. To this date, the drivers are still not available and HTC has been either non-responsive on the issue or customers have been advised to either live with it or upgrade to a newer, more expensive device which STILL does not have the proper drivers. Unless HTC gets its house in order as pertaining to these video drivers, this is the last product of theirs I will be purchasing. By the way, there have been a number of threads concerning this issue in both the X1 forums and forums for the other devices I've mentioned. Anyone who does not see the issue is either not looking hard enough or the standards are so low as pertaining to video quality that they truly don't care, but at this price premium it's really hard to justify.
Call me crazy but I was hoping that since the x1 was commissioned by Sony, that maybe they opted to pay for the drivers that htc does not. I understand that htc made the device.
Alright guys I am an Arc owner but not sure if I should have got a play I am very impressed with the arc. Im a fan of games and emulators I've got the n64oid which is great but touch screen controls take a lot away from the experience. Also for the screen the Arc's screen is vibrant I've heard that the Play's screen is dim is it dim when the brightness up full? I find the Arc to have a nice smooth interface how is the play for smoothness.
Does anyone have the two phones that could do a comparison?
All replies appreciated.
Cheers
Well i dont have an arc so i cannot comment. But i bought the xperia play for the emulators. Ive played emulators on touch screen phones and after 5 mins i was pulling my hair out lol. But with the fully mapable controls the emulators are great to play. I was unsure about the arc or the play too. But i decided to get the game controller over the better camera + hdmi output and i am not dissapointed with my choice
The screen is fine for me. Its on 100% brightness and looks great. Only problem is the light sensor but hopefully a future update will solve this. Been in the sun today and not had any problems with screen. I think the arcs screen will be better due to the bravia engine or w/e it is called.
The interface on the play is smooth as well not noticed any lag and i have got menus full of games and apps
there isnt a great deal between full and 0 brightness on the Play. only thing I will say is its a no go if used in bright areas out doors. 1/2 the time I can only just make it out if full sun light.
It's not the best but def not the worse display I've had on a handset.
Generally I have no problem with the screen brightness at all.
Normal phone usage and gaming provide a visually pleasing experience.
However, there are two minor gripes that I do have.
1. The brightness of the screen seems ok in sunlight, but the colours can look a little messed up.
2. The screen does look a little dark when viewing movies, and even though I use mvideo player & set the brightness to maximum it still looks dimmer than any other time.
OK Thanks for you reply's do you think when the reviewers commented on the dim screen this was without the screen at its maximum brightness and how is the default brightness setting, also how does it fell in the hand is on chunky? My speakers on my Arc aren't the best especially compared to my previous Nokia 5800 which had much better sound hows the play heard good and bad? What about the browser does it lag and does the device take adequate photos and videos? I know I've went off topic with my thread but saves me from making more threads.
The play is actually supposed to have the best speakers there are, I can't compare it well but the sound is suprisingly good for a phone (and I'm one of those guys that spends hundreds of dollars on audio).
other than the auto-brightness issue, the screen is fine. and you will love the emulators with the buttons, I am playing FPSE everyday^^ (MGS, FF[VII,VIII..],GT, resident evil 1,2,3)

i'll chime in here and say that i have owned nearly 10 android devices last year alone, as well as going though various nokia phones and i can say that the play definitely has the best speakers of any phone i have ever owned, and thats ALOT of phones
in case your wondering why i have gone though so many phones, its because i was looking for the best phone for emulators, usually a phone with a slide out qwerty keyboard, none were good enough untill the play showed up
A interview of the engineers behind the xperia zu posted on sony's blog..
What experience does “X-Reality for mobile” offer?
Kosaka: ”X-Reality for mobile” incorporates the knowhow of the super resolution technology “X-Reality,” in Sony’s BRAVIA TVs, into mobile devices.
X-Reality™ for mobile analyzes each image and reproduces lacking pixels to optimize quality for the sharpest videos. It analyzes elements depending on the scene and adjusts them based on pattern, outline and colour composition. It strengthens subtle patterns and accurately portrays their detailed feel, as well as reinforces bold outlines. It also enhances colour composition, vividly reproducing hard-to-display natural colours
You mean “X-Reality for mobile” can recreate the data that was once there?
Kosaka: ”X-Reality for mobile” is based on the “X-Reality,” incorporated into Sony’s BRAVIA TVs. However, it is unrealistic to use the exact same video processing chip found LCD TVs in a smartphone for various reasons such as power consumption. The distance that users view smartphones at also differs significantly from LCD TVs. This is why we developed and incorporated a super resolution processing technology, unique to Sony, that is ideal for smartphones including our new Xperia Z Ultra.
The super resolution processing of “X-Reality for mobile” analyzes videos one frame at a time, estimating and complementing any lost information. At the same time, it combines suitable video processes for each frame and applies them. Such video process patterns are stored in a database, and the most suitable pattern is selected for each various scene from the database and applied, thereby reproducing video quality infinitely closer to the original.
The super resolution technology, which estimates any lost information from videos and restores it by combining various processes, can be said to be a fruit of Sony’s video technologies. Each and every one of the process patterns stored in the database has been created by an internal development team in Sony, operating on high-performance workstations. By storing complex super resolution processing in a database, “X-Reality for mobile” enables you to enjoy high-quality video reproduction real-time that would otherwise take a few days.
With the adoption of the high-performance Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 quad-core processor for its CPU and graphic chip, Xperia Z Ultra has made it possible to perform super resolution processing that had been difficult to do thus far.

if sony wants the z to have it the z will have it
its all a question if sony wants
That's true - if sony wants to, they will give it. But there are some facts to be said - the Xperia ZU that is now launching hasn't got the X-reality onboard but will get it with an software update. So for this part is seems that the X-reality is software dependent. Which is a plus in considering that Xperia Z might get it as an software update as well.
Secondly, with the Honami leak of apps I tried a mod with X-reality on my Xperia Z - and you could really see that it worked cuz if you quickly zoomed in on a photo you saw the image getting sharper one area at a time. So as far as I'm conserned - S4 pro chip has no trouble handling X-reality. And I didn't notice any more battery drain than otherwise..
So yes, in my view it's only really a question of if sony wants to give it to Xperia Z.

i agree that it worked but it only worked in images it didnt work at all in videos..theres some super resolution technology used by x-reality for videos which improves the quality besides the normal color sharpness etc stuff

Can you really say that you can see superresolution in videos? I don't think so. But from what I can tell, video looked super awesome with X-reality for me. I saw difference between on/off X-reality. Was it just BME2 behind or was it super resoultion? I don't think that anyone can tell that just by viewing a video because it's not the same as in pictures to see it happening before you.
If I was a Sony executive of anykind, I'd vote for to give Xperia Z/ZL/ZR X-reality even if had to be limited in it's functions just to keep the software among 2013 devices equal (and to stop the hype in media/XDA )

This is what i took out of the article , it clearly states its only "super resolution processing" and that cpus before werent capablepreviously, yeah sure the s800 is 30-40% more powerful, but that still leaves the fact that the s4 is still half capable of processing it, its just whether now they want to implement it in ONLY their new phone, so it looks like a new feature specific to that range is anybodies clue. but thats how i see it , interpretations may differ

Who's faking anything? Dont be a douchebag. Like I said - how can anyone tell if it's doing super resolution in a video or not? The difference that I mentioned previosly was to the overal video and I even said dont know if it was just BME or if it was X-reality.
Besides - 1080p in a 5inch display - who needs super-resolution? If you got a crappy video to watch it's still gonna look crappy.

I bought the Verizon g2 a couple days ago and have noticed some serious lag. This thing is a beast and I don't think it should be experiencing some of the things I'm experiencing. The first thing I noticed was that the screen is unbelievably sensitive so much so that I'll have my thumb hovered over the on screen buttons on the bottom and it will register that I've pressed them without touching the screen. It shouldn't bother as much a it does but it doesn't happen all the time which I find odd.
The second gripe I have is with the serious lag I've experienced. The home screen lags terribly, when opening apps it lags, and when using apps it lags. It randomly stops music playback after a song has finished. And knock on only works half the time, if that.
The last gripe is that video playback looks horrendous... I've used YouTube and Netflix with HD video and it looks like its playing 480p. It's such low quality and actually stutters when the camera is panning around. I have VERY fast Verizon FIOS internet that can handle 1080p video playback at all times. I know it is not the internet connection so it must be the phone. Are these problems that others have experienced or should I be looking to replace it with another phone? If this is to be expecting with this phone should I just return it for the HTC One? any discussion/ help/ advice is greatly appreciated!

I've seen none of these issues whatsoever except the home screen "lag." I've got the Verizon version. the home screen lag i describe is launcher redraw. search youtube for my video "LG g2 launcher redraw" and I'm sure you'll find it. the remedy? I use nova launcher prime now and don't even bother with the stock g2 launcher. works much better and looks just like KitKat.
my video playback looks great. YouTube is known for only showing 720p and never 1080. there are modded youtube apps for 1080, though.

Yeah I thought the home screen lag wasn't a big deal and was pretty normal but the video truly is terrible. My brother has an iphone 4 and it looks MUCH better than what I get on the G2. I'm pretty convinced I just got a bad unit because I'm also experiencing an annoying buzzing sound during phone calls. It's like a high pitched, low volume hissing that is on for a few seconds, cuts out, then comes back on for another few seconds. I've researched quite a bit on this phone and the HTC One and this seems to be a pretty common bug for the G2. I'm going to return this unit for another one and hope that most (if not all) of these bugs are gone, but if they aren't I'm going to have to go with the HTC One or the S4. Thanks for the reply though.

Quick follow up after returning my phone and getting another. So far it's working perfectly. Tested the call quality and no high pitched tone so that's good. Absolutely no lag so far. This phone's awesome!

I've frequently notice that the stuttering effect while recording panning the camera 180 degree slowly.... I've sent the phone in for servicing and they claim to had change the mother board. Tested a few more display set at Samsung stores and it's the same although it's less frequent.
Is this a common problem or Samsung manufacturer issue? Can some help and do some testing and see if it's the same.... The stuttering effect is quite obvious and and it's not due to camera shake.
My device is using Sony sensor...im wondering if it's due to that or a faulty OIS
