app scaling feature - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

hi XDA,
we want to know by any chance there is a way to do "app scaling" option in this system? cus we know this phone is gaming purpose, but you see, many android games or apps still dosnt support 18:9 ratio, or "blackbars" on the side when we use in landscape mode, or maybe you can tell us how to make it fill the screen without blackbars?
thanks XDA

(Q) DPI settings throwing apps scalling out

Recently changed my dpi to 200 and unticked compatability in spare tools. Question is the apps that dont automatically scale is there a way to manually make them fit the screen? Cant live without my full screen papertoss but dont want to go back to the ugly large 240 dpi
I'd bump this because I can't find the answer anywhere, maybe my search terms suck.
I noticed the same annoying thing.
BUMP, for an answer...

Im confused ... I use 200 DPI and all my apps do rescale perfectly full screen after spare parts compatibility un-check and a reboot. Even paper toss... Only thing i noticed with papertoss was that I had to uninstall it and download it again from the market...

Some apps are simply developed with 240 dpi in mind. Typically, it appears that they use Android APIs to draw bitmaps unscaled. Even though the Spare Parts setting allows them to "see" the higher logical resolution, the bitmaps are not scaled correctly.
Most of these apps can still be used (or played). There's not much to do except making the app developers aware of this problem.
Here are some apps with issues:
- Abduction
- GOTO lock screen
- Hyperactive Ninja
- Hello Kids
- Tower Bloxx
- Mini Shot Basketball

[Q] 200dpi to 240dpi when you start a app/game

Many people like a 200dpi UI for android.
Some NAND builds even have 200dpi by default.
The only problem with it is that some apps and games are sqauled totally wrong with 200dpi.
They are build for an screen with 240dpi. Thats why im back on 240dpi but i dont really want to.
So how to solve that?
Thought something out and maybe its possible or maybe not but wanna ask you guys.
What if we can make a program that will put the screen back to 240dpi when you start an app or game, automaticly.
In the program you can select what apps/games need it and when you start it up the program changes from 200dpi to 240dpi.
Now i learned that you must restart your device to let the change work.
So what if the program also remembers your PIN-Code and enters it automaticly and start up the app/game.
And when you close the app/game the program changes back to 200dpi.
Something like that. Is it even possible to make a program like this or something?
I searched the forums but couldnt found a real good solution for this problem so maybe this is a solution if someone makes this program
This is actually a pretty good idea, I love a lower density and it's a shame some apps don't scale well.
Unfortunately, for obvious security reasons no app has access to your SIM input. Can't read it, can't input it. I think it should be possible to make the lcd density change go in effect without a real reboot though, just no clue how...
Well exactly, maybe a reboot isnt needed but they dont know how yet . Gope some devs will see this

Wanna a 270º Rotation for all apps

Hello XDA,
I have a problem, and its bothering me every day.
After installing my first ROM, the Bionix V, a small part of my vibrant screen got broken. Is a 0,3 cm from bottom?
I can handle fine almost every app, but in some that use this part I can do nothing.
Now I using the 1.3.1 Bionix Rom ( very good ROM )
So I tried to buy new Touch Screen, but is too expensive now ( is close to 300 dolars in my country). So I will w8 a little bit to get cheap.
Until then, I need to use some cheat to use the program that use that small LCD part. It’s a Rotation tool.
The problem is, some app doesn’t turn Left or Right, and even I command the app in the rotation tool. I tried to use a lot of rotations tools, but some app (Games is the majority) don't turn.
So I just ask if there’s a way to cracked some part of the android to unlock the ability to turn every app to every side I want (the called 270º).
I wanna to play a lot of games that use that tinny part of the LCD but can't do nothing....
Can u help me guys?
PS: Sorry the bad English....
Cyanogen mod allows you to do that as default for every app.
The rom is worth flashing, especially in your case

How?
I unchecked every rotation except 270, but apps can still overide. Angry birds, for instance, still loads at 90.

If you have other display settings or an app that modifies system settings, they might interfere with it.....LauncherPro rotation settings used to conflict with my system settings...just an example, but not sure if that would be why =/...I'll mess around with my settings and see why it would do that.
I run launcher pro, but even when I switched to ADW, angry birds still insists on 90 degree.
This is worth looking at, coding might be different..

[BOUNTY] DPI Spoofing tool for individual Tablet & Phone Apps

I created a bounty thread for this tool in the i717 Galaxy Note General forums but wanted to make it know to the n7000 users too as it should work on all Galaxy Note models (And hopefully many other phones).
The Goal: A tool to spoof DPI at a per-app level to enable use of both Tablet and Phone apps without changing the default system DPI
Please keeping pledging in the original thread...

Thanks
Why would you want to use an app not designed for a certain dpi to work in a crippled way ??
It would be much wiser to find a way to change the dpi 'on the fly' as you can do in windows for example. Maybe Google will make it possible one day, as we can already run apps in 'window mode' in ICS

You're looking at it the wrong way around.
Telling apps like Gmail, YouTube and tablet specific Apps you have a Tablet DPI enables UI layouts specifically designed for tablet viewing, they are not crippled, they are enhanced.
The Note's display resolution makes it a perfectly capable mini tablet that can run UI layouts designed for tablets. Samsung insist the Note is a phone and have gimped the system by removing tablet support despite the device having a 1280x800 screen.
Some may prefer using tablet mode, others may say it's too small, this tool is for the former rather than the latter.
I have attached pics of the awesome tablet views of Gmail, Youtube and BeyondPod running on my Note.
yes but it makes no sense to run them in tablet ui if you are set on a dpi of 320 even in 1280x800...

In Android DPI is an arbritrary measurement, dont get it mixed up with PPI, all you have to do is tell the App you are at 200 DPI and it will display that way
If that were true, then there would be no need to reboot when changing dpi, it could be done on application level which is, as far as i know, not possible.
However I could be mistaking, i will catch up on it....
As I see it now you would just only get your Gmail in tablet UI, displaying only half of it's content because the rest will fall beside the screen.
I think its a great idea +1
Gmail tablet UI is awesome.

Don't get me wrong, i think it is a great idea as well.
But i doubt it is actually possible in the current android architecture
I don't care about UI differences. I want the stupid apps to install from the market.
So, far, they all look the same even when they're "incompatible". Typical lame crap.
It is done in the Asus Padfone, so it can't be impossible.
And how do you cope when the apps try scaling to the different LCD Density and half of the display is off the side of the screen, or things are bunched up in the corner of the display?
Wow, this is extremely needed thing! I realy like Tablet Mode on my Note, but can't use it because of many FCs. Sometimes I prefer Tablet Mode (Opera Mobile, Apex Launcher, File managers, Aquamail, Youtube official app and others), and sometimes standart "Phone" mode (Phone apps, S Memo, some small script apps, some games and others). Don't listen to those fools who say that this program is not needed.
This is exactly what I'm longing to see but I don't think it's possible for now as it's rather an OS related issue then just a software issue. I belive Asus padfone works only in low tablet dpi too. Apps only open in tablet mode . You can't change resolution on the fly
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
The problem is not changing the resolution on the fly,
but changing the dpi on the fly, keeping the same resolution
Totaly agree. I'd love to use those apps in tablet mode with spoofed DPI:
- Poeple
- Calendar
- Mail
- Music
- Calculator
- Settings
But the rest ? I really prefer phone UI for messaging, lockscreen, homescreen and the keyboard cause tablet keyboard is a nightmare to use.
There are some mods to force Settings.apk to work in tablet mode while in phone ui - but that's just wrong cause everything is ugly-huge and not readable. Would be great to force those apps to work AND display like in 180-200dpi while the phone ( and the rest ) works in 320dpi.
But is that even possible ?
That's it!
That is exactly waht I want for the Note!

Forcing immersive-mode apps to NOT run in immersive mode?

OK, so it seems to be a common thing here where people are wanting to HIDE the navigation buttons as much as possible, but I'm the other way around - I want them on my screen at all times unless there's an actually good reason to hide them.
Some apps, like MX Player Pro, have an option to hide or show the navigation bar - status bar gets hidden by default, as the phone would be in landscape mode for watching videos.
Others do not. Thinking about apps like Netflix, Vudu and such... and the fact that the S8's screen is wider than 16:9, I really don't see a good reason to disable the navigation buttons, except for them possibly being distracting (which they aren't, not to me)
My understanding is that even using the adb commands found in other threads on XDA, you can set it to hide the navigation bar and/or status bar for any apps you want, but NOT the reverse. I tried opening Super Mario Run (that's another one that uses immersive mode, and I'm not quite sure WHY), opening adb shell while it was going, and no matter what command I ran the bar would not show back up. It's like apps can overwrite the system-wide immersive mode preset.
Is there ANY way to do this short of editing the .apk files to remove immersive mode from their manifests so they can't attempt to enter it? The obvious problem with doing that is that any time there's a Play Store update I'd have to redo the modification, and reinstall it from scratch because of .apk signatures.
Based on how MX Player works, and how some apps start immersive and then go back to normal (Pokémon GO seems to use immersive mode for the Niantic logo, but then returns to normal right after that), I'm assuming it's an option inside the app that can be toggled on and off, much like full-screen videos on a PC. But like how web browsers ask if you want to allow a site to use fullscreen, I wish I could do the same to my apps.

Did you find the way?
I'm looking for this too but preferably a shell command to use in tasker on a per app basis

No
But given what I've read, and from experimentation, it looks like it's impossible to do this without having root.
I'm not sure *why* but unless someone can prove otherwise, it seems that the System UI can't override apps - even user-installed apps! Sorta weird if you ask me...
What I was trying to do instead was decompile the .apk and remove the function that puts the app in immersive mode. Problem is, I don't understand the smali language at all... my trials just resulted in failures to compile the app again. Bah. If anyone knows about Android app development and actually somewhat understands smali, let me know...

Ok I'll let you know. As for the knowledge I'm a beginner too... I'm trying to learn a bit about what can be done using Tasker but I haven't found anything. As you said it seems impossible to force the bars to stay visible if the app hides it. When I was on KitKat there was an Xposed module called app settings that allowed just that, among other things, but I'm on Nougat now and Xposed is not available so... We'll keep looking
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S8+ using XDA Labs
That's what I mean - you need root to do it (Xposed obviously requires root), and I don't really understand why since in theory a user app from the Play Store shouldn't be able to overwrite system settings. If it was a matter of getting the built-in camera to not be immersive or something, that's another story.
The most you can do with Tasker, really, is mess with secure_settings. I've tried this extensively, and all you can do is set the SYSTEM DEFAULT to immersive on or off - changing it to on makes it so apps not normally in immersive become immersive, but changing it to off does nothing because, well, the default is off anyway...

Hello,
I have root and I also cannot disable immersive mode. I haven't found any xposed module that allow this and App Settings prevent fulscreen also doesn't change anything. Do you know any other solution with root access?
Thanks in advance!

Sadly, no I don't. I've still never found a solution for this, with or without root. And more and more app developers are updating their apps to support the screen ratio... Super Mario Run is now locked to "fullscreen" mode, you can't put it back into windowed compatibility mode anymore, and it takes up 100% of the screen with no room for the navbar anyway.
