It was suggested that we start a thread specifically for the apps that run well on the Android port to the HTC Touch/Vogue. I personally own an (Sprint=CDMA) HTC Touch Diamond, but upon seeing the maturity level of Android running on the Touch, I immediately went to eBay and picked up the Touch handset...and I am glad I did. The only reason I boot back to winmo is for work calendar (Lotus), Skype (iSkoot kinda sucks), and Podcasts (hopefully we getting DoggCatcher soon).I've found that battery life with Togga on to be about 8-10 hours which I can live with it, but it's a pain to keep toggling if you really need to conserve (but it could be worse )I plan on posting more battery data soon, but need a few more days of collection. Hopefully we can find a more permanent way of managing the data connection with balance for battery life.

The apps I have found to run well on my CDMA with dzo/f00bar's (much respect) latest files:
-Scoreboard - I'm not that big of a sports fan, but this app is slick!
-aLastFM - Just got permission to post the link from the developer. Thanks Oleg!!
-Stocker - Simple but effective stock app, but no graphs. If someone could find a better one...
-Weather - Simple, but effective. Multiple Cities, current and forecast, with menu link to detailed outlook including radar from Undergroud Weather.
-AnyCut -Great for making shortcuts to just about any screen in the OS, especially useful for Battery and Sounds&Display
-TextEasy - for sending a text to multiple contacts, until someone can get a hold of ChomperSMS or K9SMS (K9Mail I have not gotten to work either, we need a better mail app, the native client doesn't even recognize URLS, wtf?!)
-OIFileManager - It's the only one I've tried, so can't comment on the others, but there are several out there. UPDATE: I tried out Astro and Glance. I liked Astro, but after a day it stopped working for me and gives me a force quit. I prefer Glance over OI FileManager, it's on 4shared I believe.
-OIFlashlight - amazing how handy this comes in
-OINewsReader - No frills RSS aggregator
-ShopSavvy - Did you say "We'll match any price"?...but be fast with your fingers, camera is not fine enough to capture the barcode

The Meebo app is well worth a look - look for it on 4shared.com. Lets you IM on just about any IM network (Yahoo, MSN, AIM etc). IMs appear in the notification bar while you are in any other program. Great stuff.
I believe im the only person hosting the meebo.apk at the moment.

i installed and signed into my MSN account, however, just a white screen shows up. No list of contacts, etc. No menu options other than to add another account or sign off. Not exactly useful (at least this version). Is anyone using this successfully?
EDIT: I received a chat, and that gave me a buddy online, maybe no one on my list was signed on at the time I first checked.
Also, it doesnt remember your username and password, which is annoying because it randomly closed on me after tapping the notification in the bar during a chat session today. I'll keep looking for a better app or updated version.

What about an updated version of Shopsavvy. Mine keeps saying there is a new version, but of course we can't update off the marketplace.
I'm looking for the Locale application. Even though we don't have GPS running, Locale still alows profile switching based on time and days of the week, which would be useful for office vs. non-office settings. If someone could post this I would appreciate it!

If they are in the AndroidApps folder then they should be installed already. I found that sometimes icons don't show up to launch the program, however. This is where AnyCut comes in handy. Use AnyCut to search in "Activities" to find your app. If you are not seeing it in this list then you may have to "manually" install the app. Open a file browser such as OI File Manager or Glance and navigate to your AndroidApps folder. Click on the .apk file and it should launch teh app installer.

There's been a couple apps I liked that didn't fit our screen plus having to reinstall android files often I lose all my saved info so it doesn't work out for me. Sprint needs to hurry up with an HTC Android phone.
Maybe a stupid question, not sure... Why can't someone extract the android market application from the G1 to be used on other phones? Seems a bit odd of Google to limit the market to only a specific phone.
There is a discussion about the marketplace on the big long forum. The marketplace is not open source. They're talking about the commands and encryption and such for it. I'd think it's not open because they plan on having pay for apps but I could be wrong

I noticed this also. i resolved by changing my time zone in settings. Only problem is that this then modifies your "synced" time with your carrier, it adjusts + or - according to your time zone, so you have to comensate...each time you boot. Not by any means an elegant solution, but if you need realtime scores this is the answer. Probably better off sticking with NHL.com

I tried the "Ebay.apk" from 4Shared, but it doesn't display properly. The tabs extend all the way to the bottom of the other screen which is a common problem for us vogue port users.
Let me start off by saying I am not a developer. And Im not too familiar with Linux either. Just goes to show that this isnt too difficult
To get ubuntu on the Atrix please go here first:

Follow the steps. Must have CMW installed, rooted etc.
I was unsuccessful with webtop2sd. You might have good results with it, but for me it didnt.
Once you flash this cmw file, reboot you phone and enter into webtop (if you need the HDMI hack, you will find that on XDA). You will now see 3 new icons. Leafpad, Lxterminal, and a penguin. Click on the penguin, and you it will say found image. Click ok.
If your unfamiluar with linux, this will look french to you. Once it launches (the first time after reboot will take some time, be patient). Hit enter, enter again and scroll down to Shells, then hit enter on Bash. Now this is where the fun begins.
Enter synaptic. If that doesnt work you might need to install it. apt-get install synaptic. After thats opened search for gnome-panel, right click and select "mark for installation". Hit apply and go for a coffee. This will take a long time, and make sure your on wifi. This is a huge download.

Im working on getting usb-to-ethernet dongle working.I can see it, just cant get access to it.
Almost all of the pre-installed applications with gnome work. EXCEPT sound. This is driving me nuts. I am unable to find a sound driver (gstreamer) that works. If anyone here figures it out let me know. And if anyone out there have programs that work let me know. I can always add it to the list. Im very green to Linux, and just playing around at this point. Im no developer, and most of your questions can be answered on XDA forums.
I have the same setup, and you can add openoffice.org and geany packages to the "functional" list. I use openoffice's writer every day and have found no missing functions. Geany is working, but does not build and compile, so it's basically a color-coded text editor (still useful for note-taking my language classes). I did NOT use synaptic to get these. I simply used the bash script (in the same manner you described for your synaptic install) to apt-get install openoffice.org and geany respectively. Nice thread,

My sound through the Webtop is functional, yes. I'm not sure if you were talking about gnome-specific apps (I wouldn't know, because I'm not using gnome panel), but anything through mobile view or iceweasel (not including flash) plays stereo through the Webtop. I didn't do anything special to get it working, it always just has. I hope you figure out your problem.

With epiphany did you encounter a problem where it uses xulrunner-1.9.2 instead of xulrunner-1.9 and fails to start the gecko engine? The epiphany version that is available through synaptic after fixing apt-get dependencies and sources uses xul1.9 once and works right then uses xul1.9.2 every time after that and fails. Epiphany lists both xul versions as deps so i, unsuccessfully, tried to lock xul1.9 and install a fake xul1.9.2. Any help would be awesome.
I did manage to make Webtop2SD work after I created a 4 GB partition on my ExtSD through Webtop2sd partitioning tool.

I know it's a bit late for commenting lol. And probably my post may be off-topic. But was your issue the <no sound coming from HDTV via HDMI> one?
I also had this issue in webtop going on for like 3 months (like flashing and reflashing webtop to no end), until I stumbled upon this Motorola forum:

Basically, if you switch display resolution to anything other than 1280x720, sound will not redirect to HDTV. And as for me, after switching to 1280x720, I had to reboot my Atrix in order to finally have sound . No need to find for drivers.
My sound would work within the Webtop apps from Motorola. But if I wanted to use a Linux MP3 player, watch a video etc there would be no sound. Kept getting a gstreamer error.

Try to reflash the webtop and then the mod again. There is a thread in the developers area I believe called webtop mod v1 or something like that. When I get the chance I will try to dig it up. Driving in a snowstorm at the moment slightly hinders my searchability haha. Good ol Ontario I tell ya
quick question: are these persistent? can I make a desktop icon for these or do I have to apt-get them everytime?

You dont have to apt-get everytime. The installed applications are on either the phones hard drive or the SD card. Only thing you will have to do is start the gnome panel every session, which is easy enough.

Yeah after tinkering with them for enough time I figured that out!
only question is how do I figure out where they are located on my phone? I can't find a DEBIAN folder anywhere on my device (sd or sd-ext) my webtopmod folder is on my internal storage btw

If you use webtopmod's debian chroot (the white shell) they'll be in the linuxdisk file, as it's actualy a filesystem in itself. You won't be able to 'directly' access them. I recommend switching to webtop2SD. I didnt' want to, but everything is native that way and most things run better anyways, I installed xfce4 and got rid of that stupid awn dock at the bottom and put in a little bar. Now it feels like linux!

I installed chromium, and it's running smoother than firefox ever did. Haven't really had a reason to install anything else, but i think i'm gonna get fxce4 because the current dock at the bottom annoys me

^yeah after using it exclusively for the past day or so it's quite capable but I can also see the limitations of debian through chroot. I'd ideally like to get rid of the webtop all together and just have kde or gnome (i'm not picky, xcfe4 would work for me too)
but I'm assuming if I do webtop2sd I can have ubuntu with gnome installed no problem?
I went through the process of putting all of my gnuSTEP icons on the webtop and it's very much like my current gnuSTEP machine (supremely capable btw when using a debian core) I haven't run into any real problems using the chroot method, save for not being able to put shortcuts on the AWN bar and the occasional, but when I get my lapdock in the mail and start exclusively using this when I'm out and about I'll look into doing webtop2sd. I need to get a bigger sd card too, I have a 16 but I'd rather have a 32 external only for webtop and the 10 or so internal for android I don't listen to music on my android (I own a zune) so 10 should be plenty to just have apps and android

Did you use the jaunty hack to get chromium working?
I successfully installed chromium but every page loads for a second and then crashes. I didn't really look into the chromium hack (I don't think I use jaunty for anything and synaptic/apt-get can get all the repositories I need) but it seemed intensive especially to get flash.
I've found that while firefox has FANTASTIC flash support (like, really good and speedy, no chops) I just end up using konqueror for regular internet tasks. I can't seem to get it to install flash (I don't know how to install .deb packages) but it's speedy for other things and makes an excellent file manager
If you could get chromium without 2.3.5 i'd get it... but 2.3.5 offers what appear to be no benefits at all, correct?
Just kinda scared to have to rebuild from a bricked phone.

Hi all, recently bought one of these nice little devices myself. This is how I got on, not all that's supposed to work actually does.
Rooting with Touchnnoter 2.1.31 was easy enough and I soon found SearchMarket to access Android Market. What does work: Kindle, QuickPic, AdAway, DropBox, GoodNews
So I could be reading books and news, but I'd like to have a bit more, namely web access!
- ReadItLater/Pocket is shown as purchased in Market, but can't be installed
- Stock browser shows starting page as Error404, directly opening another page works first time only, but links or scrolling don't. Plus it often crashes.
- pre-installed Opera Mini didn't work, so I uninstalled and reinstalled:
a) only clicking "accept" REALLY fast allowed me to open it at all, otherwise it'd crash
b) spiegel.de and BBCNews always crash, even with images turned off I only briefly see the page layout
- Opera Mini Next doesn't open,
- Opera Mobile and Evernote are supposed to work, but don't appear on SearchMarket
- Dolphin Browser often crashes as well, plus no add-ons can be found
Any ideas why this is happening?
Plus: can anybody tell me how to access the external sdcard? I tried several file managers, activated root access etc. but have never been able to access /mnt/ or external_sd or emmc. So I haven't been able to sideload any apk either.

I use Opera Mobile, I found the apk somewhere (not on Market).
The SD card appears as /sdcard in the system (i.e. shell or ADB).
It is the second device mounted on the USB (i.e. desktop).
If you are writing an application you need the permission android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE.
There's also Instafetch as an alternative clipper.
Regards market errors, it's nice to do adb installs anyway, just a matter of getting hold of the .apk, possibly from AppBrain. OperaMobile (not to be mistaken with the lighter streaming OperaMini) works well for me. Perhaps there's a apk direct from Opera available.
It sounds like you have a problem with market. Perhaps adblock could be interfering? As I say, check out alternative ways to install in the interim.
The last couple versions of opera mini don't work but luckily I backed up my apps via airdroid and have a version that works. Readitlater/Pocket does not work because their recent updates have dropped android 2.1 support. Have you tried es file explorer? In ES you tap the home icon on the toolbar and select Phone the sdcard should then appear as a folder

I see both Opera Mobile and Evernote through SearchMarket.
Try to see if you can find Opera Mobile directly from Market (not SearchMarket)
Market -> App -> Communication -> Top Free
Opera Mobile is on the second page.
Alternatively you could go to Google Play on your desktop/laptop
and see if the Nook shows up on the devices (its called Phone).
Then install them on the website for the device, and a few seconds later you will see them install on the nook.

Browsing and installing from the webstore is definitely way faster than on the Nook.
Also, I use another app called Quick Search Widget. Launch it as an app or from the widget. It can search the Market, and also doubles as a Google/wikipedia/... search widget.

SD card: my bad, as "sdcard" was available. But as I recently formatted this drawer on my SGS (wanting to format the external sdcard, but wiping the OS...) I was extra cautious. Settled.
I downloaded adb and installed apks, great! I still don't get it how to do this on the Nook itself. There's something in NookColorTools about the app having to be in /system/apps/ or else it won't work...
And I'm quite proud to have figured out why Market didn't work! There was something wrong with the content filter: although set to "all", a lot of apps were blocked. Having switched to "mature", I'm in business with Evernote and trying out Instafetch.
BTW: @Schneicw, you're the best! The working OperaMini.apk was the best birthday present (couple of days early)! You wouldn't happen to have an old ReadItLater.apk lying around as well?!?
Next, I'll give the ebooklauncher a shot. Fingers crossed!

You probably do not have install of Non-Market apps enabled.
Bring up NookColor Tools, and you will see check box with "Allow Non Market Apps". This might be checked (but still not working).
So you need to uncheck this box and recheck it.
Also try out remote install of apps from the google play website play.google.com/store/apps from a laptop (you need to login with the same account as on your nook), I find that really convenient...

I've got my Nook Simple Touch rooted with latest Touchnooter. The thing is, I don't want to use the Android Market at all. I want to install the F-Droid repository instead, as it has nothing but Free Software Apps, and has satisfied all my needs on my Droid phone, and I would prefer to keep as much of my data away from google as I can.
I have the FDroid.apk file. But I can't understand how to install it. I have the box (about allowing install of outside apps) in NookColor Tools checked. But I don't know how to get to the file on the SD card to start installing it.
What is this I've been hearing about installing with adb? Does that mean you can't just go to a file manager, select the apk, and begin installing? Because that is essentially how F-Droid installs its apps. Just does it all on its own, you just click "Install". But if that method doesn't work on the NST. Than F-Droid won't work

P.S. also the stock browser doesn't really work right. just goes to a black screen after a couple different web pages. And Opera (the one installed by Touchnooter) won't open at all. Just flashes the screen once, then stays on the home screen.
We really need a custom made CyanogenMod Rom!!! I get the feeling it would solve alot of our issues.

You should be able to connect the nook to your Windows machine and copy the .apk onto the sdcard.
For browser Opera Mobile works for me.
TouchNooter also has the Amazon Market, which you could use.

well as a first note, I would like to say I have no Windows machines at all. I am 100% Linux
But I already have the apk file on my SD card. Its just I have no idea how to get to the file to install it. I thought that the app "Super Manager" was a file explorer/manager of some sort. But it does the same thing as Opera, I click on the icon in the App drawer, and the screen just flashes once or twice. Then returns the the home screen. No thing saying that it has crashed or anything.
So that is where I'm stuck.
Also, as a side note, I wish to use the F-Droid repository, because I want to use nothing but Open Source (Also known as Freedom Based) Software. Including markets. It's the number one reason why I use nothing but Linux on my machines. Linux is also faster than Mac or Windows, but won't get into that can of worms right now. hahaha.
You could write your own file explorer Jk
adb install seems to be the way for you.
Google "ADB download install", there should be a ton of links.
However now you will have software created by google installed/running on
your linux machine. (ha ha).

Lol Well I have next to zero programming knowledge. But when I find the the best open source file explorer I'm definitely gonna throw the dev more than a few bucks for his hard work.
I'll look into adb installing for now. Just really hope and pray we get a Cyanogen or some other real Rom ported to NST soon. I think would solve all our issues with a totally different rom on it.
P.S. yes, having proprietary google software is gonna bug the crap outta me!! lol

First of all, thanks for great set of resources! I was rooted an up and running with market in no time.
I am planning to use the Nook as a home automation controller, where the interface is presented through a webpage. For that, I am going to have it mounted and constantly powered-up.
So, my question is - how can I disable screensaver to have the Nook show the browser 24/7?
Also, is there any simple way to show contexts of the browser window without the navigation buttons? (If not, no worries - I can put something together quickly in PhoneGap or similar).

Hi, I am quite interested in your project and was wondering how you got on with this.
Basically I am looking to have a calendar + weather page up constantly on in my rooted Nook Simple Touch. I have managed to get rid of the screensaver but it still goes into sleep mode after a while. Also would like to get some direction on how I could do my own PHP based page because most of the calendar apps out there dont seem to report weather

Getting the image on the nook is a different story. I tried using crond to wget or curl the image from the server to the screensaver folder so I could have other info graphics rotated throughout the day. I was unable to get the image via wget and unable to get cron working. Any suggestions... (besides having a browser open 247)

Hi, kudos for the progress so far.
I take it you couldn't just use another device to FTP the file to the nook every so often?
I was hoping to do a very similar thing with my spare NST but unfortunately my coding skills are not up to that level. You mention that you were trying to populate the screensaver folder with the image to be displayed, would there be any way to automatically make the NST wake up every few hours to refresh this image (assuming you can get the image there in the first place)?
I think that the better way to do this all is to write an app.
The app could use either an ImageView or a WebView.
You could easily make this work directly without a proxy or a server.
You wouldn't have to play around with screen timeout/wakeup,
This is going to be hard wired powered?

The more I think about this, the nook simple touch might have to be charging.
I've done something very similar with my nook showing a custom weather listing in a fullscreen Dolphin browser. Though I have a problem with it not running for more than a day or so before the browser stops refreshing anymore. Have you experienced this? I'm currently looking into some way to kill/restart the browser on schedule perhaps.
Also, how did you get the browser in landscape mode? I can't find that anywhere.

Another way to set orientation is if you have an application that only does landscape.
Switch to the landscape app, home out of that, go to the application that does both.
It should stay in landscape mode.
I have an assortment of apps, some portrait only, some landscape only, some both orientations.
By jumping briefly to a landscape only or portrait only app you can set the orientation for subsequent apps.

I've got a web server running on my NAS serving a custom page for me. The browser launches fullscreen on boot up via some auto start app. After 5 min, the page redirects to an all black page for a second, then an all white page for a second (to clean up the display), then back to the original page with any new information on it.
This works well except for two issues.
1. On boot up, there's no way to avoid the first lock screen. After unlocked, it doesn't come back, but it's always there on startup. This wouldn't really be an issue except...
2. The browser stops loading the page after a while. I can hit refresh and it goes through the motions, but the page isn't updated. It can take a couple of days for this to happen. Restarting the nook solves this. I confirmed that the page is still served normally to other devices (not a web server problem). I would just have the device auto restart at 3am or something, but then the lock screen would always be there.
Do you guys have any ideas about how to correct this or at least work around it?
I can't even try other browsers because this is the only one I've found that displays full screen.

I wonder if there's a way to have a cron job kill and relaunch the browser every once in a while to get past the freezing issue you'd mentioned. Or just have the cron job kill the browser every once in a while and relaunch it, pointed at a new information display page.
Even better would be if there was way to bypass the need for a web browser and interact directly with the e-ink screen buffer as can be done on rooted kindle devices. (I can't post a link, but google search "Tools Eink Framebuffer Update Trigger" to find the kindle framebuffer commands)
Yeah, I worked directly with the screen output on my kobo, which worked well, but it was more of a pain to make changes. That might be because I'm more familiar with php and css than python and screen blit-ing. Having android to work with makes it much easier to expand functionality by just downloading an app and using my fingers, instead compiling software and ssh-ing in for everything.
Speaking of which, it looks like my problem is solved. I installed tasker and set it to kill the browser at 3am and start the browser at 3:01am. Thanks all.
What about google play apps for weather? Most of the apps I have used so far have had contrast issues since they are designed for color screens. Does anybody know of good apps that display the current weather info and forcast data in an eink friendly color scheme?

Apologies for the resurrection, but for those looking for a digital low power / e-ink info display this might just do it.
This app will do the trick if a static jpg of a web page updated at an interval will do (set to output a jpeg in the custom screensaver folder on rooted nook)
Electricsign android app: (search electricsign on the play store - I can't post a URL here yet).
Leave the WiFi on and set the screensaver timeout.
The source code is on github also (google.it ).
I can never find the app because I always think it's called electricsheep.

I had high hopes (very high!) that I could get tasker to run on the ouya, unfortunately I have not had any luck as of yet.
Maps was installed, as was a few files that needed to be manually installed in /system, but unfortunately neither seemed to work.
Has anybody had any luck? Please let me know if you did, I had big plans for this little system and tasker was a key piece to it.

Well, apparently I'm batting 1000 tonight on threads.
A reboot allowed instillation of the tasker trial version.
It looks like everything works, or as much as you would expect for the ouya. I did two test tasks. First was just a screen popup, which obviously worked great. The other was a reboot to test root access, and this also worked perfect (say hello to automated weekly reboots!).
Now, to see if autoremote can be made to work, and then on to autovoice or utter! and the inherently difficult prospect that will be.

A few issues with tasker itself, such as I can't download from Google play, it won't recognize my original order #, i can't find 'my' .apk, basically can't get my purchased version working and am stuck on the 7 day trial version. As for functionality it works great.
Current main task is to start XBMC if Autoremote received a certain message, as well as sending a message when xbmc is open and a different one when it closes.
On my tablet when I fire up the Yatse app, Tasker checks to see if XBMC is running, if not it displays a popup asking if I want to start xbmc. If I say yes it sends a command through autoremote which is what triggers tasker to start xbmc.
OK, a few things I have found.
Originally I could not download Tasker through the Play Store as the Ouya showed up as 'incompatible', however after a Play Store crash that removed it from my system, and subsequent reinstall, I can now download it from Google Play. I don't know why this was, but when I first did the play store mod I didn't have busybox installed, I did for the reinstall. I don't need the play version however as I was able to get the 'Trial' version validated, which is good as the direct download has added functionality (that I will never use). To validate the trial version you need to find the 15 digit order number (not the 16 digit Google provides in the email). This is best accomplished by using the 'Contact Crafty Apps' link in the email, and then finding Tasker, the 15 digit order number should then be visible. This only works if you bought Tasker before March 2013 though, otherwise you will need the Play store version (thanks Google :/)
To get Tasker to run you need to be Rooted and move two Google files to the proper location on the Ouya. Tasker will not run without the Google maps framework and oddly enough installing Google maps doesn't install the full framework. You can get these files by flashing the gapps package with CWM, or just install the two files themselves. To get the files unzip the gapps package, I think in the 'framework' folder. You need to move com.Google.android.maps.XML to /system/etc/permissions, and move com.Google.android.maps.jar to /system/framework. This WILL require you to remount /system as writeable. ES File Explorer worked for me (download an old version, 3.0.4 maybe, as the newest Play store version crashes), it was the only free root access file manager to work for me. Remount /system back to the way it was. BTW, I did all of this without adb, it was all done on the system itself with some help from dropbox (unzipped on my nexus, it was easier).
Tasker itself works great and I currently have it sending messages through autoremote to update variables on my other devices, this triggers a popup that asks if I want to start XBMC when I start my XBMC remote app (only if XBMC isn't running). If I select yes then it sends an Autoremote message that triggers a Tasker profile that starts XBMC. I also have Utter! setup to trigger the 'Start XBMC' Auto remote message on my Nexus
My next two tasks will be for an automatic nightly reboot, and a task that sends the Ouya into sleep mode when I start my alarm clock app on my nexus. I'm still trying to think of good ideas to implement. I hope to get a microphone working to use voice commands directly on the Ouya, and my dream is for an IR blaster to work so the Ouya could turn on my TV with voice commands (old TV)

When i try to open the scene or even create a new one Tasker closes and goes back to the Make Menu. Have you seen a similar thing with the version you have been using ?

Sadly, other than getting it running initially I have done nothing more with Tasked on my ouya.
Your trying to make a scene in tasked? Scenes are really only for overlays and custom menus (drastic oversimplification I know). I fail to see the need for the complication of a scene just for mounting and unmounting. Perhaps you could change the tasker task to a simple popup menu (which now that I think about it may be a scene...). Popups worked for me, but that's all I can say about it.
Sorry, I'm not here much anymore as my ouya just runs xbmc now. I will try and check in more often.
