My Shield TV is complaining about limited storage space. I see that it has downloaded the SHIELD Experience Upgrade 7.0 files however I do NOT want to update right now (possibly ever...)
How can I delete the SHIELD Experience Upgrade 7.0 files to free up that space and block them from re-downloading? (at least for now) My Shield TV "just works" and is currently enjoying record breaking WAF - I have no interest is ruining that by trying to upgrade.
Answering my own question. I found the upgrade file in the following folder: /data/data/com.nvidia.ota/files
I then cleared data for the "System upgrade" app so that it would realize the upgrade file was no longer there.
So you need root access for this..? Cos cant find any file/path, what File explorer to use etc. I am trying to delete the Shield Experience 7 Oreo update that I accidentally downloaded, dont want to upgrade now, and its messing up my Android system updates form the Play Store.. cant install them, probably because of space.

I fell into the 6.2.1 trap before I got Google Android Market installed. As a result of a partial market installation, I get periodic errors about the android market that pop up and need to be forced closed. I plan to do a factory reset and return the device to the store then buy a new one with the original OS. I need to know what to do so I can get it working with Android Market OTA.
Since the tablet has only 6+ GB to play with, I don't want to load it with too many hacking type tools or other OS. I am interested in seeing how Titanium Backup works but I don't know if I want to keep the KF permananently rooted. My main goal is to have Android Market available and working wirelessly. I am also trying do decide whether to block the the OTA update from Amazon permanently or just until I get my basic Google apps installed. So my plan is:
Get a new Kindle Fire with old OS
Leave WiFi off
Root with Super One Click
Install Google Android Market
Disable rerouting to Amazon Market
Am I right assuming that once installed, Google Android Market will continue to function once Amazon updates me to the latest version?
I also want to make sure that I have Google Mail and Google Maps and I don't know if 6.2.1 unrooted prevents installing those. I like the ability of the 6.2.1 to get rid of junk on the carousel and the scrolling speed seems a little better now. Of course videos are playable with unrooted KF.
Am I missing any steps or are there other recommendations?
You should be able to install Google maps and Gmail onto a regular 6.2.1 KF without any problems.
I don't think there's a known method to block the update while keeping full online functionality.
The best thing at the moment is to install a premodded 6.2.1 update with root access so you can install the Market Place etc.
In anycase if you return the unit for a new one there could (and probably will) be another update in a few weeks. So far there's been an update every couple of weeks since it came out. Each time you lose root and are back to square one.
I'm waiting for someone more clever than me to find a workaround to get root access back on a 6.2.1...
PS - 6GB is a lot of room for installing apps! I wouldn't worry about running out of room unless you're filling up your KF with downloaded media.
oh and PPS - Amazon updates can easily stop the market place from working. The 6.2.1 update has stopped mine from working (because I had it installed in /system/app which is one of the folders replaced in the last update.)
Got new 6.0 KF - Bootstrapping Catch 22
So I returned the 6.2.1 version and got a new one with 6.0 still installed. Now I find that I have no way of loading any apps with the stock unit. The directories that show up on the device through the USB connection are very limited. I copied the root explorer app to the documents directory but naturally it does not show up.
Without having a file explorer app, I don't know how to proceed. If I turn on and register the Kindle, I am liable to get updated immediately. If I can just get to the Amazon store and get a file explorer app and then quickly turn off wireless I may luck out. Are there any other ways to get an app installed without having an app like root explorer or similar without having to first go to Amazon market?
6.2.1? I'm still on 6.2. What's the deal? Why did i not get the update?
Update - I was able to quickly register and bring in the root explorer app. I then turned off WiFi and found I was still at 6.0. Now to try to root it...
I seem to be unable to delete files which are on an external HDD, using Kodi or FTP. I have tried different FTP clients and all allow me to connect and view the files, yet I cannot physically make any changes to them, including renaming, moving and deleting.
Both KODI (SMPC) or FTP fail to physically delete the file, yet I can go in via Solid Explorer and delete the file that way.
I am in the same boat as you. When I bought my Shield with the 2.1 firmware installed, I did everything to delete files on my external USB hard drive from Kodi and I just couldn't. So I decided to root the Shield and from then I was finally able to do so from Kodi or smpc with ease.
Too bad yesterday I did the 3.1 firmware update because I thought Marshmallow had solved this problem but I was wrong...once again, I can't delete/rename files on my usb drive.
Would be great to get this solved, but have really run out of things to try.
You try the new 3.2 update then root?
Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
I haven't rooted my shield yet thinking that it was a kitkat problem and that it had been solved with the 3.0 firmware..so I have no choice but to root it soon.
The fact is that I don't understand why the shield needs to be rooted to delete files on a simple usb drive...
Update : I now have rooted my ShieldTV but still, I am not able to delete any file on my usb drive or even on my internal SD card. I guess this is a marshmallow limitation but really, it drives me crazy.
So I have sort of solved the issue. I am still dealing with nvidia support, but my solution was to buy an app called X-Plore.
This app has a WiFi sharing option, which allows it to communicate with X-Plore installed on anpther phone.
This has now allowed me to fully delete files on the shield via my phone without it "coming back".
That's the only solution I have found too. Not very convenient though.
I hadn't thought about using another android device to delete files through WiFi and X-Plore.
Thank's for the suggestion.
I have decided to sell the Shield TV. Just a couple of things I couldn't get my head round, and was a pain to use.
So I am going back to my Probox2 Ex+. Which has FTP! Files are deleted via SMPC! SMPC even picks up movies, that the shield TV version didn't, and lastly air mouse control.
So this was an Android issue and not Kodi. Kodi (most apps) can only write / delete in its own folder on an external drive.
It appears to be related to Android 6.0
No app would help including X-Plore or Es File. Android 6 Marshmallow appears to have removed SD CARD ACCESS Intent from Android TV editions so it is impossible to modify any kind of external storage including USB storage devices.
Hi All,
I was very happy to see that root has been achieved for our device but unfortunately not for v5.3.2.1. The root thread says that any attempt to downgrade 5.3.2.1 by sideload will result in a hard brick.
1. Will a factory restore leave me at 5.3.2.1 or will I be downgraded to something that can be worked with?
2. Is there any way to prevent updates on the device itself? I don't want to hear that a root for 5.3.2.1 has become available only to find that I've been silently and automatically upgraded. I'm not really interested in trying to block addresses on the router, unless that's truly the only option.
3. When sideloading apps, what is the correct location for obb files? The two Android/obb folders have empty folders with the names of some working apps I've installed, but no actual obb files in the app subolders. (e.g. obb/appname/appname.obb -there's no appname.obb file. Does the Kindle put the obbs somewhere else)
4. Other than getting the playstore on the device, is there anything else we can do with 5.3.2.1?
My main reason for root is for AdAway. The others don't seem to block ads in apps...
Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately once on the latest, you're always on the latest. The only thing we can really do is install Google Apps and the Play Store. Also unfortunately, I cannot answer any of your other questions. I got my Kindle to put into my dashboard of my truck so not doing much with it other than play music.
Edit: Okay I take that back, I can answer the Update question. The only current way for us unrooted folks to not get updates automatically, is to factory reset, setup Kindle, NEVER OPEN THE UPDATE SETTING!!!! I thought that mine auto updated on it's own, but I found out that my wife was dicking around on it and went in the update section by accident. When she got done and put it to charge, it updated.
Let me start by saying I am a new user (and, trying to be a responsible one...). I have spent several hours reading threads, etc., but I think I'm a little overwhelmed. I'm not totally sure where to start. Hopefully, I can get a little guidance to point me in the right direction. Thanks.
Here's my situation. My Nexus had become unusable, taking up to 30 seconds to respond to a touch. After considerable research, and realizing it was no longer supported, I decided root it and improve performance.
Recently, I added back one of the apps that I had purchased, only to find it was the free (restricted) version. After more searching, I decided to install a modded Google Play Store. It will not transfer to the sys partition. Apparently, because there is too little space there. Apps2Rom is reporting 7.04 MB free space. I have managed to get it to run, but it gives an error message saying "No internet connection", even though I am able to use my browser.
So, I am trying to delete unneeded apps from the sys partition, or move them to the SD partition. How do I know which ones can I safely move or delete? I have installed very few apps since I rooted it. Most of the ones listed came with the root installation. And, can I delete the odex files?
Here is my configuration:
Nexus 7 (2012) Wifi, Grouper.
Android 4.4.4
Kernel 3.1.10
Rooted A few weeks ago, I rooted my Nexus using TWRP.
Tools installed:
SuperSU
Root Explorer
ES File Explorer
Lucky Patcher
Freedom
Apps2Rom
I'd appreciate any leads or guidance. Thanks!
Long-time Shield user and have been used to sideloading apk's with no problem. Recently bought another Shield, and when I began setup a few days ago, the message came up to update to 8.0. After the update, successfully loaded Puffin, but when try to load either "droidadmin" or "filelinked", I get error message stating: "NOT SUPPORTED Download is not supported on this device yet". Need to have a way to download one of these apk's so I can sideload as usual. Any comments or ideas welcomed.
I just do it usual way of downloading apk on pc and transfer it to shield storage and then install it using a file explorer to find it, hate downloading in shield as the ads in any website make it hard, just my 3 cents.

The problem isn't your Shield, the problem is that Puffin TV (Build 7.7.3.30753) and newer do not support downloads anymore.
Use the earlier version of Puffin TV (Build 7.7.2.30719) instead. It works perfect.
Just remember: DO NOT UPDATE TO ANY LATER VERSIONS!!!

ES explorer ? Why in hell would you ever suggest to anyone to use that app ? For one ES explorer is not even available anymore on the play store because it has been banned for click fraud. But even prior to the app disappearing from the play store , ES explorer has been total crap for the past at least 3 years if not more.
The only file manager worth using , is X-plore.
Chill out buddy....
Of course you can use any file manager of your likes.
If "X-plore" is the "only file manager worth using" is debatable.
For my part, I have to disagree with you.
Take care!
